Insomniac Interview, Part II

Yesterday PS3Blog.net kicked off their Insomniac interview with Part I and some great questions about Resistance: Fall of Man. Today they continue those questions, plus they have some questions about the PS3 in general that you may find fascinating.

What an amazing interview. He informed us so much about the ps3 etc...something Phil would never say. Good stuff, he should speak more.

Watapata6264d ago

I think the entire interview, both part 1 and part 2 were great to hear. PS3blog.net had some good questions for Insomniac.

What you said about Phil, I wish more people over at Sony would actually talk about the technical side of things every now and then as opposed to just saying "oh, thats not really a problem"

TheExecutive6264d ago

i agree with both of you... this was a good interview and I wish that SOny would talk more about why they did what they did with the hardware. I found the RAM comment interesting. I always wondered why they did that. ANy other insights?

techie6264d ago

Yes i have another insight.

HS Army AI is done on one SPU and parses through the whole army with on board SPU RAM...it doesn't need the main ram at all. That's 2400 seperate AI for the army..all of which can attack you or be blown up.

Pretty amazing aye? Spu's often don't even need to touch main ram.

achira6264d ago

very interesting! its is clear that ps3 memory system will be better in the long run, and thats nice!

brianodom6264d ago

8. The PS3 has 256MB of fast video RAM and 256MB of normal RAM. But I’ve heard that all memory can be used either by the Cell or the GPU anyway. Is this split an issue? Does it hinder or help? Would a unified memory architecture have been better? Do you have any clarifying comments about that?

Al Hastings, Chief Technology Officer: In practice, the split memory architecture hasn’t caused us many problems. The GPU can access main RAM at high speed and with very few restrictions. And while there are some restrictions when you want the CPU or SPUs to access video RAM at high speed, so far they’ve been easy enough to work with.

For the PS3, I think the split memory architecture was the right way to go. It allows the Cell and the GPU to both do heavy work on their local buses without contending with each other. It should really pay dividends a few years down the road in the PS3’s lifecycle when everyone’s code has gotten more efficient and bus bandwidth emerges as a one of the most important resources.

finally got what i've been looking for...insomniac is really in the groove, can't wait for resistance 2

VirtualGamer6264d ago (Edited 6264d ago )

I agree Sony really needs to have more of this kind of information from developers on what the PS3 is like to work with and what its capable of. That said I am still sure you will have people who will deny and counter until till they are blue in the face. Ultimately it will be the games that will win over the hearts and minds not the details! :)

Premonition6264d ago

I never knew that info deepbrown, thats pretty neat, imagine the bigger games later down the lines, I mean games that havent even been named yet :)I cant wait.

It’s Time for Sony to Bring Back Killzone and Resistance

Sony is in the middle of an FPS crisis, but bringing back two much-loved PlayStation shooters could easily be the solution.

I'd rather them focus on a rpg. Shooters can wait

just_looken1h ago

We have alot of rpg's but only cod for a AAA first person shooter unless you toss in xdefient but that is still fixing 2yr old beta issues.

We need more AAA fps games then rpg's

Inverno59m ago

I honestly don't think we'll be seeing these anytime soon, if ever. Insomniac is officially on Marvel duty since it seems that all they're working on based off the leaks, and Horizon is more of what the casuals want these days. And I now I'll get a bunch of disagrees, but keep in mind that Resistance last got a game on the PS3 (2011) and Killzone was a launch title for the PS4 (2013). 10 years is a long time to make a game, if had any interest they would've done it by now, add InFamous to that list.

just_looken31m ago(Edited 20m ago)

Your right except the dates killzone mercenary was on ps vita 2013 same with resistance burning skies back in 2012

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH36m ago

Resistance 3 turned me off to the series but I’d love a reboot. KillZone I think can stay dead. Give me a new Resistance like 1or 2 and I’ll be happy.

Huey_My_D_Long27m ago

I honestly never cared or liked killzone. Huge resistance fan though. I remember so many nights playing melee only on USS Lexington, and I like the alt history vibe.

P_Bomb24m ago

I’ve been barking up that tree for years. 😢

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro89d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7289d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_89d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga89d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2389d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200089d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin89d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole89d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix89d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198989d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

Michiel198989d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon764d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 764d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris766d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy09766d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty764d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb765d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey602765d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop765d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv72764d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya765d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.
