Latest figures: PSN members vs Xbox Live users

E3 is heralded as the biggest gaming event of the year, attended by journalists from all around the gaming globe, with publishers saving their latest and greatest announcements for the prestigious expo. But the event also carries with it a not so subtle underbelly. No, we're not talking about corporate espionage, suspicious charges to escort services on company credit cards or bare skin fistfights beneath the expo stage. We're referring to the epic cockfight that underlies every new announcement of every game.

Games are branded with a specific camp in mind, be it in Spiderman font, green lettering or recently grey-ified typeface. Hell, even multiplatform titles are showcased on one system or another in an attempt to bolster the poorly veiled grudge match that occurs weekly across the internet channels and more openly at the bigger gaming events. Whenever an opportunity rears its head, someone takes a shot across someone else's bow. And then of course, there's the numbers and figures that get conveniently released around about the time of a major expo.

Good god, first lets talk about the site, the fact that you have 15 pages with 2 lines on each one is borderline criminal and you have a ad that pops up 5 seconds in, blocking what little text their is.

And PSN includes PsP accounts, and people with forum accounts on Playstation.com

socomnick5451d ago

Not to mention most people have 3 or more accounts for all the content specific downloads. I personally have 4 psn accounts.

360 man5451d ago

i really do believe all of that could have been done on 2 pages

its a cheap way to get more page hits i say

FamilyGuy5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

im somewhat afraid to post in this topic, given the members who've posted so far...

Anyways, Socomnick, yeah right. It's annoying and unneeded to begin with to have more than one account, unless you REALLY want things only offered in other countries. I have only one account and was annoyed by setting up a cousins so why would anyone do that 4 times?

There are DEFINITELY people with more than one account but the same is true for 360 owners. It's ONLY $30-$50 a year and spoiled kids NEVER want to share their accounts. What's $30 if it keeps the kids from arguing about such things like "You deleted some of my friends!" "You deleted my saves!" ALL YEAR.

Mention of the psp is pointless, at least until the Go is released. the only psp users with PSN accounts are the psp owners with PS3s, it's as simple as that. I've had my psp since launch and never signed on to PSN through it. I'd say about %2 of PSP owners, without ps3s, have created accounts and the rest are from dual account PS3 owners.

You guys make me laugh, but in a bad way.

Speaking of which, I know SEVERAL people that don't even have a silver membership and have NEVER signed their 360s online. I recently updated my girls cousins to the NEX so that he could play avi files cuz they required an online update, then i still had to update it for a few different media types.

Anyways, yeah, no wifi outta box makes 360 a hassle to sign online with for semi-casual gamers. That's the bottom line to that.

I have 4 psn accounts and my younger brother has 3

Microsoft Xbox 3605451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

I have 15 XBL Gold accounts.

thereapersson5451d ago

One of the worst game sites on the internet. How their garbage gets approved around here is beyond me...

SuperM5451d ago

I can guarantee you that most PS3 owners only have 1 PSN accounts. Its only the most hardcore audience that would get several accounts. Id concider myself one of those hardcore and i only got my second account yesterday.

table5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

I have 10 PSN accounts /sarcasm

What are you xbox fanboys so insecure about? It's not like these numbers really matter.

On another note, this site is a disgrace.

skip2mylou5451d ago

i really do have 3 accounts U.S/Asia/ and EU if u wanna check then here u go FadedDeath216745/Prettykillaz/ fdsqwer EU i didnt really care cause i never play games with it just grab content off of the EU PSN

Megatron085451d ago

While I'd say probaly around 6-8million of those accounts are on the ps3. given the number of people that have like 3-5 accounts I say there is probably only about 2-3 million total playing online on the ps3. While cause the XBL account are only for the 360 there is accually 20 million online. A few are silver accounts but I guess around 15 million are gold. I've personally seen over 4 million people on Halo alone.

stewgart like hell the number doesnt matter having 15 million to play with vs 2-3 million. With 15m people you can find someone to play with online on almost any game even the older ones.

table5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

talking out your ass megatron. Most of the normal people(i.e. not people on here) with a ps3 will have just 1 account(like me). All my friends with an xbox have gone through multiple free trial accounts. Also microsoft are not clear on how they count gold accounts like when you renew it and change your ID. You can twist it and spin it all you like but at the end of the day the numbers of xbox live and psn online accounts will both be proportionate to the units sold.

notpill5451d ago

Totally agreed.
what a horrible site!
with all that 15 pages articles...wtf?? I saw a page with two lines and.. jump..another one with just two lines of text.

DelbertGrady5451d ago

PSN numbers include PSP, PS3 and PC.

yippie1234y5451d ago

i got 1 account on each system (360 and ps3).

i got both systems cause i had nothing to play when i my xbox got the red ring.

then my membership expired during the process. at this point i really gave ps3 a chance and enjoyed the free online. When gears 2 came out i was back on xbl. I guess the point im trying to make is each system has its good and bad this war over which system is better is so dumb.

what is the point do you think one day the other side will say "you were right im gonna go buy that system now" just enjoy what you got and stop acting like 4th graders.

i want to read news not these bs comments

Arkham5451d ago

"PSN numbers include PS3, PSP, and PC..."

And XBL numbers include original Xbox owners...

Thugbot1875451d ago

Not sure how a site like that got approved. Next time DMason save us the trouble don't post the site or post the full story here so we don't have to go there.

IdleLeeSiuLung5451d ago (Edited 5451d ago )

The fact that you have more accounts than PS3s sold is telling. Sony adopted the approach of:

- allowing signup online without a PS3
- merging their website accounts with PSN
- PSP, PS3 and PC are all included in that figure
- early in the PS3's life (before Trophies were released) there where less likely to stick to one username due to no investment
- I believe Sony releases members, not active members (although that is loosely if at all defined)
- allows accounts in different countries

So yeah, the PSN accounts will have many duplicates. Personally, I just witnessed my brothers friends many whom had changed their username even after collecting Trophies.

The Xbox 360 will have duplicates as well due to multiple trial accounts and some on different countries (but I believe this is patched up?), but there is probably also a bunch of people that share one account due to the cost. Furthermore at least 50% of the number they released are Gold customers.

Really a better measure is to look at games that sell about even relative to the competitors user base. Then extrapolate how many online gamers are on each platform to get an idea of relative size.

On another note, I thought there were reports of PSN had 30 million accounts already?

edgeofblade5451d ago

Of all the useless, fanboy-baiting, bad-science numbers that we put up with today, PSN and XBL accounts are the worst. Neither companies' figures are useful for anything.

iamtehpwn5451d ago

I hate you
DO NOT PUT 1 SENTENCE, and then make someone click through 15 pages.

what an ass >_<

maxcer5451d ago

"Good god, first lets talk about the site, the fact that you have 15 pages with 2 lines..."

that's as far as i got and you made me lol, bubbles. i didn't even try to go through the rest of that mess. hell, there is more text on the N4G story than the actual article

EpicGamerSwordsman5450d ago

Its Completely Opposite When it comes to PSN Subscribers,There are over 14 Millions PSN Subsribers. Why would people make 10 Accounts when PSN is free, only ppl on xbox LIVE do that because some users don't have money to buy 1 year subscritions & want to experience online Multiplayer the way it was meant to be, FREE. xbox LIVE has about 17 million people, thats really impressive but how many of those are fake made acc's with the same person using 'em? ?, honestly im no fanboy of any console, i have an xbl account with a yr of gold but you're making psn sound like a joke with only a few ppl playing. & Basically its only necessary to make multiple PSN accounts with the same person using them is for regional purposes, Killzone 2 demo launched in the UK PS Store as a regular demo the same day it was launched for gamestops ripoff voucher for pre-ordering it.

skip2mylou5451d ago

you are so dam stupid NetFlex doesnt work outside of the states people use the cheap bootleg where you see them for $5 which i have actually done

MovieScouse0075451d ago

Netflix is useless IN the USA!

Syronicus5451d ago

Use it through the PlayOn app I bought for 40 bucks. You can download PlayOn to your PC and play all of your instant watch Netflix movies right on your PS3 and for those without Xbox Live, you can use it on your 360 as well. No need to pay an extra 50 bucks a year to see your Netflix videos on your 360, just a one time fee of 40 bucks.

http://www.themediamall.com...

This makes the whole, "Xbox 360 has Netflix" argument a moot point.

KingKionic 5451d ago

Netflix is integrated into xbox live. It`s a great addition to the xbox live service.

onanie5451d ago

The fact is, PlayOn actually makes the point moot.

IdleLeeSiuLung5451d ago

PlayON is a good workaround, but requires your PC to be on and might for some have a complicated setup. Furthermore, when Netflix decides to upgrade or change their service, will PlayOn work then?

It is a good alternative, but not a replacement. On the other hand, I didn't see too much good stuff on netflix streaming anyhow. Anyone care to point out anything good?

socomnick

If SONY counts them. Hey it's the numbers game again, ok i'm willing if you are.

M$ states 30million consoles sold.

How many are replacements. How many people have bought a second one because of the first being broken, or sometimes dodgy.

I know many have a backup 360.

Have they really sold 30mil. na, don't be silly.

That 33% was going on for quite some time.

After that it was down to 15%

And even now it borders around 5-10%

Around 3000 xbox360 per store were being sent back to M$. $10million dollars worth from EB aus.

And you think M$ are really at 30million.

If the real numbers came out, you'd know the real sales numbers are about 24million.

jib5451d ago

"How many are replacements. How many people have bought a second one because of the first being broken, or sometimes dodgy."

UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED THQ Xbox 360 ------ 679.6K
UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED THQ PS3 ----------- 334.4K

with multiplatform numbers almost always happening on a monthly basis like that ^^^, i would answer your question with a 'not a lot of people'

-MD-5451d ago

Yes they sold 30 million the warranty just recently ended during the first 3 years people were getting refurbished consoles not brand new ones.

prunchess5451d ago

UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED THQ Xbox 360 ------ 679.6K
UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED THQ PS3 ----------- 334.4K

I think that says more about the 360 owner than the 360 install base. There is a far better range of games available for the PS3 also. Couple that with the PS3 having a more mature user base....

xg-ei8ht is right. jib - How many people do you think had to go out and buy another 360 due to the failure rate it has?

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 5451d ago
Omega45451d ago

The fact that there are more PSN memberships then PS3's sold speaks volumes.

Syronicus5451d ago

Considering that the PSP is part of that user base. Granted, not nearly as many as with the PS3 but it's cool that they have their online service available for both the console and PSP.

IMHO these numbers are great for developers since they can see just how big the user base is for a particular online service. At this point in the game, both Xbox live and PSN are attractive services for the developers looking to sell something on.

Immortal Kaim5451d ago

I'm sorry, I have never seen such a blatant grab for website hits in all my life... 15 pages with about 2-3 lines of text on each, this could have been condensed into 1-2 pages easily.

Nice work Gameplayer, you have officially turned me off your website. Anyone from the site care to give an explanation for this practice, cause it is quite frankly disgraceful.

prunchess5451d ago

I give it a miss. It's a garbage site that constantly posts flame-bait articles.

Price Reductions Available Now on the Digital Xbox 360 Store - Closing July 29, 2024

Xbox 360 launched 18 years ago and was a generation-defining console that invited many people to jump into gaming for the first time and connect with friends around the world. We’re thrilled people continue playing their favorite Xbox 360 games on Xbox 360, or on newer consoles via Backward Compatibility for supported titles.

"we believe in game preservation"

Remember the media reaction when PlayStation wanted to shut down the PS3 store (but then kept it open)... where is that reaction here?

CrimsonWing6943m ago

What are you asking? Like, if people got pissed at Sony for that? Because they did. We also got pissed at Nintendo when they did it.

You’re getting a chance to buy what you want before they close it. Moving forward digital stores should work like Steam. It’s just in this beginning they made it platform specific and closed off. A hindsight in their part and it sucks, but what is the percentage of people buying anything off these stores and what is the cost to keep the servers up?

I get it and yes making strives so this isn’t the case every gen we go into is absolutely a must. I mean PSN on PS3 is so convoluted to buy anything since you can’t use a credit card. Vita store is gone. It’s going to go away eventually.

Einhander197221m ago

"What are you asking? Like, if people got pissed at Sony for that? Because they did. We also got pissed at Nintendo when they did it."

My point is when PlayStation did this every website under the sun was writing articles talking about how "anti-consumer" it was yet I haven't seen anything like that happening when it's xbox doing it, in fact mostly what I see is praise from media when xbox makes obviously false claims about game preservation while they close down their store and xblig and push for digital only consoles streaming and subscriptions.

What I am asking is for everyone to be criticized or praised equally.

I mean look at the way the PS5 Slim's detachable disk drive was reported, it was super critical. Even though in reality they made it easier for people who initially buy a digital only console to move to physical, it was actually a step away from digital only. But did it get reported like that at all... no.

And you can still buy stuff on PlayStation you just need to add money to your account on the website or a PS4/5.

Tacoboto12m ago

That reaction isn't here because you can still play Xbox 360 discs of supported BC titles on Series and Xbox One, and you can still buy BC titles on the current Xbox Store.

It still sucks losing access to non-BC titles but don't act like it's the same situation. Let me know when PS5 actually supports my PS3 library.

Einhander19723m ago(Edited 0m ago)

How are you going to play those discs on your Series S (which 75% of xbox owners have) or your adorably all digital Series X?

And keep in mind that BC on xbox is an extremely limited selection of games, it's less than 25% of retail releases, and way less than the entire catalogue.

It's not a solution for the future, this isn't how "game preservation" looks, it's the fake PR that makes it that much worse.

1Victor1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

RIP Xbox 360 digital store and all its games.
It really grinds my gears that they are waiting till 10 days before closing to give the best discounts and the list as of now is 100 or less titles from the massive 360 library

Phoenix761h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I should have enough points by the weekend to get £25 credit off MS, (hardly ever spend money on xb1), might look at a few of these.

DivineHand12559m ago

The Xbox 360 store was one of the only advantages the Xbox Series consoles had over the PS5. When I got my series X, I spent more playing Xbox 360 games vs current-gen Xbox games since that was the golden era for Xbox and several titles had enhancements such as 4k resolution and fps boost.

Closing this store will now only benefit the competition.

VersusDMC21m ago

The xbox360 store is closing on the xbox 360.

Xbox 360 games are unaffected on the xbox one and series consoles.
