Bethesda confirms Fallout 3 DLC for PS3, two more DLC releases planned for all three platforms

Bethesda announced today that the previously exclusive downloadable content for the Xbox 360 version of Fallout 3 will be coming to the PlayStation 3. Bethesda has been working on implementing it for a while and are looking forward to bringing it to PS3 gamers via the PlayStation Network. Operation: Anchorage will be released for PS3 in June, followed by the release of The Pitt and Broken Steel 4-6 weeks apart. Release dates will be forthcoming.

In addition, a new update will be released for PS3 that will allow users to download and play the new DLC. The release date for that update will be announced at a later date.

I don't see why DLC is such a big fukin deal now. Personally i blame microsoft. Since they started hyping up GTA4 DLC to be the best thing since sliced bread, it seems people have fallen for it. Its now like exclusive DLC is a substitute for an exclusive game.

I have no interest in AND exclusive DLC. I only buy DLC for games i LOVED anyway and GTA4 wasn't one of them and i STILL haven't played fallout and if i did it would be on 360 anyway cus PS3 graphics are crap apparently.

I would consider purchasing GTA4 DLC if it was released as a separate game for the PSN...a 3-4GB download that didn't require a disk to play would be cool

You need to realize that "PS3 owners" are not a singular, identical group, just like 360 owners are not all the same. Sure, it looks like many above are saying they won't buy it, but you apparently glossed over the ones who said they will. Are the couple dozen gamers here representing every PS3 owner? It's not all black and white, all or nothing, that's the problem with fanboys, they're extremists, fanatics. The shades of gray in this world go over your head, and as far as gaming, that means you have love and hate for the hobby, and you miss out on a lot.

Secondly, regarding the ones that are avoiding the DLC, can you not empathize with their anger about the DLC at all? I'm reading above a lot of frustration over the whole thing, and they're entitled to feel that way after the timing of things playing out like this. You have to admit, just because it's "exclusive DLC" they have a right to be spiteful or frustrated over not getting to enjoy their purchase as much as some other gamers can, you can't take that away from them, they can feel cheated if they want. Maybe they're just boycotting the game and Bethesda, instead of going around on dozens of websites bashing it by giving it reviews of 1 out of 10 all over the place to seek vengeance.

I've played the 360 version (for many hours at that) and while it does look clean with the 4xAA, it's a bit overblown once I tried out the PS3 version.

Yes, there are jaggies, and yes there isn't anti-aliasing. But it's not really that bad, because it makes the rest of the game look sharper. And the bump-mapping makes the game look more 3dimensional.

This isn't a spin, because if it was up to me, I'd take the 360 version for the anti-aliasing and the generally smoother frame rate.

Although both versions suffers from the ridiculous amount of glitches.

C'mon...seriously. Need I enter a debate about the quality of the game that we're discussing? Fallout 3 was critically acclaimed. Mirror's Edge was a new IP that did okay with the critics but did not sell well. Fallout 3 made by a group that know how to make an RPG and have shown it in the past. Mirrors Edge was not only a new IP but an attempt to have a first person parquor type game (or however you spell it).

It's Summer 2009. Not too many left that care who haven't got it for the 360. Still there are those who bought the game and may want to play it.

Still I'm saying - 360 or PS3 - exclusive DLC sucks, even time exclusives. It is a publisher/developer saying we don't care about giving you the most complete, best product we can offer.

It is the effin' next gen, I want complete games that promise to take advantage of what this gen is all about (on-line, DLC, not just graphics). I don't want the game I buy to be an afterthought for a publisher when I can get better quality elsewhere.

Timed exclusives are 'okay' for me as long they are within three months. Six months is pushing it to me. Fallout 3 DLC will be eight months.

I just feel that publishers/developers are screwing themselves to get a quick buck. It is like the story of Mohammed Ali and Don King. Don literally showed Ali the money, in bills right in front of his face. It was guaranteed money, but it wasn't as much as he should expect. And not nearly as much Don King was making.

In the long run I am afraid it will hurt some publishers and their games. This doesn't hurt Sony and Microsoft, so it not about being a butt-hurt fanboy. At least for me that is.

But for those that don't, let me explain. Look at how a game sells on Ebay 6 months after its release. I use Ebay as the example here because it is the true definition of what the market price is for your item as an auction goes for what the market will bear.

So anyway, a six month used game on Ebay is what...like 20 to 30 bucks less than it was at launch? Now suppose that someone tried to sell a six month old game on Ebay, even if it were brand new, for full price. They'd be spending ebay fees for nothing. there are exceptions. Games that were made in limited edition or games that are selling like gangbusters six months later will go for close to full retail price. MLB09 the show is, for example, still selling for almost 50 bucks on Ebay and while it hasn't been anywhere near six months enough time has passed that one would expect the price to be around 39.99 for the game. But I digress.

My point is that an old game doesn't get full retail price more times than not. Therefore, you can't charge full price for DLC that was available however many months ago and expect people to: A) jump for joy and B) spend that money.

Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Modern Warfare 2 etc etc all deserve my money.

Bethesda made a deal for exclusivity and now expects my dollars after getting MS' dollars to keep the game exclusive? F that. I'll cop the game used off Ebay for the market price and the DLC will be purchased if I had the extra cash and it's for a reasonable price. Competition from games that are new, original, and exclusive is just too tempting a purchase compared to content for a game that's relatively old.

P.S...I love how you jumped from your "360 owners didn't complain about Mirrors Edge" to 360 owners not getting a price drop. 360 owners not complaining about Mirrors Edge exclusive DLC is like, hypothetically speaking, Kane and Lynch had exclusive DLC for PS3 and 360 owners didn't complain. Get Operation Anchorage first because the Gauss Rifle really helps in taking out some of the harder enemies in Broken Steel. Don't bother with The Pitt unless you're a completion fan...it's just OK.

Releasing DLC exclusively for the 360 wouldn't have bothered me if it wasn't for the inexcusable level 20 cap. IMO, Bethesda made the prickish decision to sacrifice player enjoyment in order to ensure sales of their DLC.

The game I played was *incomplete*. A fundamental component of any RPG is character development, and yet I was capped at level 20 with about a third of the main quest completed. If it wasn't for DLC, there is no way the level would have been capped at 20, so I'm calling foul.

My money's going to developers who know how to treat their customers. (Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Criterion...)

Not saying you're wrong, but Microsoft is wrong. Bethesda was talking about DLC from a year before release and has a history with this generation of consoles of providing DLC post-release.

- Blurry screen in every time a friend logged on.

- I couldn't see my character on the character customization screen – I want a new haircut, dammit!

- During the Thieves Guild quests, the fence in the Imperial City just wasn't there.

- Got screwed by the vampire cure bug in Oblivion: GOTY edition and had to go out and rent the regular edition to fix it. There's no patch and there never will be – thanks, Bethesda, real great.

Well, this is interesting. It has become apparent that very few 3rd party games or DLC are ever truly exclusive to one platform. I kept telling people when this generation was just getting started that they shouldn't count on ANY 3rd party games staying exclusive to one console, and that prediction continues to be born out.

Given that I am often a year behind on the games I play (except for my most anticipated games) it often turns out that a so-called 360 exclusive ends up coming out on the PS3 before I ever even get the chance to play it on the 360. Ninja Gaiden 2 Sigma is an example.

I love my 360 and I think MS has accomplished some really great things this generation, but I think they would be doing so much better if they actually invested in more first-party developed games. There are relatively few good games that can ONLY be played on the 360. They need to stop wasting money on trying to get timed exclusivity on games and DLC and instead invest that money towards the creation of new game experiences that wouldn't otherwise be created by other developers. This is Microsoft's biggest weakness in my opinion, aside from the 360's reliability issues.

Microsoft will market it that way. Unfortunately for them it's not true. In terms of the cash made Nintendo win, in terms of technology Sony win, not quite sure what Microsoft brought to the world with the 360 that was brand new other than online gaming but I've always had my PC for that.

Personally it depends what way you look at it. The Wii may have made loads of money but the games look like something made 10 years ago. The 360 had reliability issues sure, many of my friends have slowly dropped from the 360 and picked up a PS3, they almost announced their purchase as if it was a weight of their shoulders (like making the switch was something to be guilty about).

In my eyes the PC should rule the gaming world because I love strategy games and that's their home, but in the console world the PS3 has brought the most to the table since it's introduction and still hasn't reached it's limit to this day, not even Killzone 2 managed to do that. The 360 came out at least a year before the PS3 so based on the fact that technology advances (lol) the PS3 has more up-to-date hardware than the 360, although that is all but established now.

I guess it depends what you want out of gaming, personally I want games so I'm not interested how much money Nintendo made or how many consoles Microsoft or Sony sold I just want something good to play. The thought of forking out for a new console puts me right off Microsoft tbh, they've got Windows 7 to push out first...

LOVED waking up to this. Fallout 3 on PS3 is my favorite game this gen, and yes i have LBP, MGS4, COD4, GTA4 etc, and they're fantastic games, but THIS is the one game that kept me entertained and immersed during those dark winter nights. over 150 hours of exploration and fun combat for me in that game. NOTHING can beat that.

and as for other PS3 fans dissing Bethesda... you should remember they released also one of the best games this, Oblivion, as one of the first and few superior console ports on PS3. even when there was a lot smaller install base than now... Bethesda went an extra mile for us, and delivered a stellar multiplatform game on PS3, when other devs were going the easy route and just released unpolished PS3 versions... (F.E.A.R, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, The Orange Box... need i say more?)

yes, i am huge Bethesda fanboy. i will follow them to whatever platform they choose to develop on, and im REALLY glad that they're on board with the PS3. otherwise i would have to upgrade my PC or buy a whole other console.

Pleasing us isn't second it's the first rule really. Otherwise you have no customers to sell to in the first place. It doesn't matter if it's a development studio or a publisher they'll both look to put out something that appeals to the audience.

You wouldn't expect an FPS dev studio to go to EA and say, "Well this is kinda like COD4 really, a few bits are different, just put it out there and rake it in". I don't think they'd work for 3 or so years to just push something out because it's the trend, if they do they're not very good dev studios imo.

Making money is their primary goal but the first aim is to find out what the target audience wants and give it to them. I've wanted a freeroam superhero game for a while, so what happens... they develop Infamous and Prototype for release a few months apart. I'm happy.

It's a first person RPG much in the same vein as the elder scroll games (Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Arena) it's a great game if you're into that sort of thing.

V.A.T.S. is pretty much essential in a lot of places, you can play the game as a first person shooter but you'll find it takes a ton more ammo to bring down an enemy. Besides, there's something really satisfying about watching someone who is trying to kill you have their head exploded in gory slow motion.

MS is so full of sh1t. They claim exclusive this, exclusive that, and it pretty much always isn’t exclusive. How come there isn’t some sort of lawsuit against them for this? It is such BS and false advertising. I won’t be getting the DLC, as I didn’t really enjoy Fallout 3 all that much, but it just so lame that they keep beating their chest about exclusive DLC and games that aren’t truly exclusive. I hate timed exclusives, especially when the company isn’t up front about it, for any system.

I cannot believe the sour attitude of some of the PS3 fanboys. Fallout 3 is my favorite game ever (just above Mass Effect). I own a PS3 and 360 and like every game that comes out for both systems, I bought the 360 version. I loved the game even before I knew DLC was coming out and then one day the first DLC showed up on Live and only then did I look further into the game and see 3 DLCs announced total at that time for the 360 and GFW. So when they thought that the DLC was 360 exclusive, the fanboys were angry. Now that it has been announced that it is coming out for PS3 the same people are saying "too late." Sounds like people just like to complain.

Be thankful you are getting the DLC. Don't be bitter.

I absolutely addored Fallout 3, I put over 100 hours into the game and eventually recieved the Platinum trophy. I must have been very lucky as the game crashed on me maybe 3 times in those 100 hours, very little data lost and nothing that was game breaking or really spoilt the experience.

For me it would have been game of the year if MGS4 hadn't come out but it's definitely my 2nd favourite game of last year. I was extremely disapointed that the PS3 wouldn't be getting the DLC (the one and only DLC I've been gutted about) This is superb news! I will be buying this day 1 even if I'm in the middle of something else (Bionic Commando, Sacred2, Infamous, Prototype to name a few games on my upcoming wishlist)

Bring it on! I can't wait to finally get my hands on that sweet looking stealth suit!
