Duke Nukem Developer 3D Realms Shuts Down

A very reliable source with inside knowledge of Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms today told Shacknews that the company has been shut down.
The closure came about as a result of funding issues, our source explained, with the shut down said to affect both 3D Realms and the recently resurrected Apogee name.

Phone calls and e-mails to various 3D Realms veterans have thus far gone unanswered, with publishing partner Take-Two likewise unavailable for comment.

3D Realms was founded in 1987 by Scott Miller and George Broussard. The company had infamously been working on Duke Nukem Forever over the past 13 years.

Duke Nukem Forever it seems will remain a myth passed down from generation to generation forever. :(

cupogoodness5483d ago

I don't know, If this is true I'm pretty sure it'll be picked up by someone, if it's anywhere near a finished product that is.

DNF and its history have just garnered so much attention, I can't imagine some big name publisher wouldn't see it as a cash cow waiting to happen.

qface645483d ago (Edited 5483d ago )

oh well
come on seriously now people who cares!
i mean they have been working on a single duke nukem game for the past 13 years what did they put out besides prey that was worth it?
why miss a company that barely did anything?
i mean there were no guarantees duke nukem forever was ever coming out in the first place or that it was actually being made

SullyDrake5483d ago

Rockstar should pick these guys up and finish Duke Nukem Forever, we all know Rockstar knows how to make a terrific and mature action game.

Jamegohanssj55483d ago

They realized that after 13 years there was just no reason to even carry on. LMAO. Too Human 2.

one of the greatest mysterys in gaming history.

very very sad :(

SinnedNogara5482d ago

Something tells me that 3D Realms was shut down because they haven't released a "Amazing" game since 1997. They lost money.

FOXDIE5482d ago

its about time they shut down!

Tito Jackson5482d ago

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO!

:(

And I was actually looking FORWARD to this game.

50CALheadshot5482d ago

dumpster material, in todays age of gaming

TheDude2dot05482d ago

More like Duke Nukem NEVER!!! Hur hur hur!

thesummerofgeorge5482d ago

Saying "when it's ready" as a release date for a decade to loyal fans is obnoxious. Can't take your fans for granted in a competitive industry.

This is the milestone the reached 15 days ago .
the game will take forever to be released hahahahaha.
Too bad i was hoping to play it before 2020, but now even that release date is so surreal

Cajun Chicken5483d ago

NO! DAMMIT! I WANTED TO PLAY THIS GAME! PLEASE DON'T LET THIS BE TRUE!!!

KingDizzi5483d ago

It has to be noted that Shacknews posted this article, I only see them post these "rumours" when they know it is happening and have confirmation.

Sangria5483d ago

See this:
http://www.gamasutra.com/ph...
"News of the closure was first reported by Shacknews, with Gamasutra obtaining separate confirmation. Sources told Gamasutra the studio will be fully shut down by the end of the week."

And Gamasutra are not that kind of site full of pranksters.

God damn Megadeth Duke Nukem anthem is the best.

Snookies12598d ago

It is pretty amazing, I remember being so hyped that they covered the Duke theme back when it happened haha. I still quite enjoyed Forever though personally.

"so wrong yet so right"

Only a few will know what Im talking about lol :D

Wow, that advanced lighting makes a huge difference to the visuals. I get that Gearbox tried to slap everything together and release a finished product. But it seems like they cut out a lot of content that would have made the experience more enjoyable. That's a shame.

Number1TailzFan640d ago

Nerfed due to consoles.. and not the first time it has happened.

-Foxtrot640d ago

Kind of amazing the difference a lighting engine makes

Number1TailzFan640d ago

Same, the AI could be pretty dumb but the bosses were fun. I thought the levels (mostly) got better later in the game too.

XiNatsuDragnel640d ago

Devs nerf a game man best quote I've ever heard.
