Demise of the PS2 has been greatly exaggerated

In 2008, a year the PS2 was supposed to fade away, Sony saw releases such as LEGO Batman, SmackDown vs. Raw 2009, James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Need for Speed: Undercover that were also released on next-gen systems. These titles prove that the PS2 is still seen as viable when it comes to making a prophet for publishers...

2009 is still an unknown for they system as the release schedule is not nearly as kind, to be expected, but with Ar tonelico 2: Melody of Metafalica, Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle, Tomb Raider: Underworld and Naruto Shippuden : Ultimate Ninja 4 of note there are a few good titles hitting the system. Ultimate Ninja 4 should be great as it is the first Shippuden title here in the states of any gaming form, quite nice for us Otaku.

There is and never will be anything like the ps2 console again, its the best console ever made.

Nihilism5539d ago

some xbot pu$$y disagreed, but i agree completely...ps2 was the best console ever, the best library of games of any console, and the best library there ever will be, gamecube fame was shortlived...or never lived at all, and ever so with the wii....o owned one...and got rid of it, but my ps2 lives on

ChampIDC5539d ago

I don't like to say anything is the best personally, but it definitely is one heck of a good console. The console itself isn't really anything that special, but the variety of games for it is just incredible. It's living proof that a console doesn't need to be the most powerful to be awesome, as it had the lowest specs of all last gen consoles.

HDDVD_for_the_win5539d ago

Yeah, PS3 software library is unmatchedn, it just dominates.

On the hardware side though, the Dreamcast was already more powerful and it was out even before the PS2 (I have both, I know what I'm talking about).

I'm amazed by the quality of the latest PS2 games, like Persona 4...

Gue15538d ago (Edited 5538d ago )

not exactly the best console because the Xbox and GameCube were better. They had better hardware plus the Xbox had better online than the PS2.

The PS2 had the best software, not the best hardware.

pain777pas5538d ago

The system sold 131K last month. It just won't die and truth be told I have a 60gig PS3 with Suidoken 5 in it so go figure.

Im still would rather play PS2 games more than anything.

Sibs5539d ago

Hehehe... he said prophet instead of profit...

Snake Raiser5539d ago

Well of course, what did you think he meant?

Picnic5539d ago (Edited 5539d ago )

I think that in this article they probably mean a 'profit for publishers', not a 'prophet for publishers'.

I say that the demise of the PS2 in terms of selling games is overdue. To me, the PS2 become synomonous with being a soulless machine (ironic for a console with an 'Emotion Engine') pumping out loads of games with only a relative few true greats. Compare that to the more limited but richer library on the Dreamcast or Gamecube.

Like the Wii now, the sales of the PS2 are in inverse proportion to how good the technology of the console is. The PS2 has a much less powerful engine than the Gamecube or Xbox. It was a bit more powerful than a Dreamcast but do its own original games look as timeless, fun and inspired as Sega's such as Ecco the dolphin, Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure? Of course not. Sega has more soul and spirit than even Nintendo (Nintendo is more conservative really- one thing Sony did right is that Crash Team Racing is better than any Mario Kart game).

Now that Sony have swung to the other extreme and offer the most powerful console on the market (I even owned a PS3 for a very short time) Sony should deserve some praise for not relying on those who don't care about the tech specs so much. But like the need to buy a multi tap on the PS2 to play 4 players games (an inexcusable thing considering that the earlier N64 and Dreamcast had 4 ports), Sony find ways to extract money from even those laying out large money for the PS3- this 'future proof' box which is supposed to have everything you need doesn't come with an HDMI lead!

The PS2 has nothing on the Gamecube's Metroid Prime or the Resident Evil remake. People should have been getting the Gamecube when it was selling for dirt cheap instead of continuing to prop up the PS2 with more praise than it ever deserved.

PS2 fans can rarely even say what is so great about their machine other than the number of games- but not the number of great games you can't get anywhere else.

Whoa, slowdown Jabroni. Metal gear, ff series, tekken series, dmc series, Gta series,Gow series, tales series, suikoden series, Jak, ratchet, Racconous.......The list is too long. So many hidden gems too. The PS2 is the greatest system with 2 generations worth of games it plays PS1 games and was a DVD player. You are without a shadow of a doubt Picnic a Jabroni.

Too dated in my book. The AI is way too unpredictable to be acceptable today. It's definitely a game of its time.

Jingsing4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Agreed with those sentiments. The quality of the CPU controlled characters make or break a stealth game and they are pretty poor in all the Splinter Cell games by today's standard. This is what led me to playing Spies vs Mercs all the time in later games just to get a better stealth experience from a real person. Arguably Sony are making better stealth games albeit not Tom Clancy stuff.

TheProfessional3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

You should stick with fortnite or one of the countless bloodborne style games then. What a joke.

rlow14d ago

I had a good time with the game. It is a product of its time. But when it came out it was a must have game for a lot of people. I wish Ubisoft would make another game in the series or at least a reboot.

vgvill3d ago

They are making a remake, I think. I loved the original game when it was released, but I tried to play it again in recent years and just couldn't get on with it. The same with the older Hitman games.

PrecursorOrb3d ago

Yeah chaos theory still holds up though I gotta say. If you’re a fan of the series I highly suggest you go back to that one. Ubi has said they are remaking sc for “modern audiences”. I don’t have a lot of faith for the future of that company

Chocoburger3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Due to the lack of modern stealth games, and me constantly playing the MGS series, I've been looking for alternative stealth games to play, and went back and re-played the SC series recently. I wouldn't call SC1 or SC:PT masterpieces, there are AI issues, they're very much trial-and-error games, and that can lead to a lot of frustration. I also found the stories in this series to be boring, uninteresting, and just sloppily told. Cinematics are also of poor quality for both in-game scenes and CG cut-scenes, the soundtrack didn't leave any impression on me either.

Chaos Theory is better, but there was still a lot of room for improvement, and Double Agent (old gen ver.) was a sloppy mess that ended up a regression from CT. But still, at least they tried back then, these days Ubi-junk doesn't even try to make good games!

Kudos for putting Kill.Switch and Chao Legion on the list. I love those games and agree they're underrated. Kill.Switch is one of my fav shooters on the PS2.
