10 ways to rationalise pre-ordering a PS3

"The keynote presentation from Sony's Phil Harrison had a lot to do with it: he announced two separate PS3 virtual worlds – PlayStation Home and LittleBigPlanet – and showed demos of some key new games.

Of course, this won't make a jot of difference to your views if you're a hardcore Xbox 360 or Wii fanboy. But for the floating voters who've yet to decide on a next-gen console – or who've got a Wii and are wondering whether to become a two-console household – Harrison's keynote has spurred some serious pondering on whether to pre-order a PS3.

If you're in that situation, here's ten ways to rationalise shelling out £425 –

You have lots of money, and you are not intelligent enough to know what to do with it.

Blind and Dumb Lemmings, Sony Loves You.

True Gamer6295d ago

Same thing could be said about you.

Blind and Dumb Lemmings, Microsoft Loves You.

There are Sony trolls but there are also Microsoft trolls.

Bathyj6295d ago (Edited 6295d ago )

We're intelligent enough to know anyone who hates a console because of some silly schoolboy crush on another console is going to miss alot of good games. Admit it, every console has good games, even Wii, eventually. If hate is denying you the chance to play them, then I feel sorry for you.

I'm sorry, but if you only care about one machine you shouldn't call yourself a gamer.

As for the article, those are good reasons but I dont really have to "Rationalise" getting a PS3. Everyone's making out like its like getting a morgage or donating a kidney. A couple hundred bucks extra is not a big deal and if it is you're in the wrong hobby. Stamps, marbles or baseball cards might be more up your alley. We spend thousands of dollars a year on games and worry about $100 or $200 for the console itself. Kinda backward thinking. How about the fact Sony titles are $AU100 while X360 are $AU120. Thats like getting a free game for every 5 I buy. Does an Xbot ever bring that up when discussing price. I'm also a movie nut and BR is looking good to me. People keep saying only about 10% of people have HDTV's but that number is rising. 90% of TV's sold today are HD and I bet out of all the gamers here the number is probably close to 50% or more. If you dont have one yet I bet you've been thinking about it. And its not just for PS3 (common misconception. "Wah I have to buy an HDTV now to get the most from it."). Well of course you do. The same is true for Xbox. Who wants a lousy 480i CRT when you have a next gen console. The Boss is giving me dirty looks, I better get back to work.

9 more sleeps to go. Only 7 if I stay up all weekend.

Tut6295d ago

Says the person who sports an avatar of an Erudite from Everquest. Wait, who runs that game again?

Hypocrisy is a wonderful thing. /sarcasm off

*Answer to above question: SCEA (a.k.a. Sony)

CyberSentinel6295d ago

If you know your EQ history, Sony did not make EQ, They bought it from Verant Interactive. Speaking of avatars, with a name like "Tut" (famous male figure in history)and an avatar of a women, which is it? Are you a man or a woman? Do you even know what you are?

Tut6294d ago

That was the saddest comeback I have ever heard. Perhaps I should put a ripped male figure to accent my "manliness" right? I am very sure of what I am.

If you know anything about your history Verant Interactive was not purchased by Sony, it was the games portion of Sony until it decided to split divisions with PC MMORPG's and console games. It was called a few other things before that like SISA, but Verant has always been an internal part of SOE, never another entity NOT owned by it. Even so it doesn't change the fact that SONY is the sole owner and operator of that game, so it still makes you a hypocrite.

Get your facts straight before you decide to try and look cool.

CyberSentinel6291d ago

Veriant Interactive was no longer a part of 989 when they developed EQ.
Your logic makes as much sense as someone hating on Microsoft because they made/make Halo. Microsoft Bought Bungie, just like Sony Bought EQ.
Don't believe me? Look it up.

Enough to buy an awesome PS3

As a movie buff as well as gamer, the Blu-ray player alone is enough of a selling point for me. Add in Sony's vast library (of released AND upcoming games) and I'm sold :)

#11 should really be #1. Playstation name. You know they are in the long haul and will show why they have been in the buisness long enough to launch 3 consoles.

I'd rather them focus on a rpg. Shooters can wait

just_looken10h ago

We have alot of rpg's but only cod for a AAA first person shooter unless you toss in xdefient but that is still fixing 2yr old beta issues.

We need more AAA fps games then rpg's

shinoff21838h ago

Yea right. Theirs so many shooters on the market.

just_looken5h ago

@shin

Name 3 AAA fps games coming out this year

Crows907h ago

There's tons of RPG in the market too...what's your point exactly.

Ironmike7h ago

No more rpg for a while would love a new resistance though

DarXyde6h ago

Agree on preferring RPGs though at this exact moment, it would be great to see more horror games. Another reason why Japan Studio closing is just tragic. Loved Siren.

just_looken5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Fuck jim ryan japan studio did so much and helped alot with ports/localization

If they were around bloodborn would be possible like how they helped with demon souls ps4 finial fantasy port.

Horror games would be nice but the jim ryan axe job helped alot in killing playstation dev numbers/freedom and increased regulation with the new censorship crap.

Inverno10h ago

I honestly don't think we'll be seeing these anytime soon, if ever. Insomniac is officially on Marvel duty since it seems that all they're working on based off the leaks, and Horizon is more of what the casuals want these days. And I now I'll get a bunch of disagrees, but keep in mind that Resistance last got a game on the PS3 (2011) and Killzone was a launch title for the PS4 (2013). 10 years is a long time to make a game, if had any interest they would've done it by now, add InFamous to that list.

just_looken9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

Your right except the dates killzone mercenary was on ps vita 2013 same with resistance burning skies back in 2012

Good-Smurf7h ago

Both of those games are either made by smaller B team or completely different developer.
Killzone Mercenary developed by Guerilla Cambridge which is now defunct.
Resistamce Burning Skies wasn't made by Insomniac but by Nihilistic Software also defunct after the failure of CoD Black Ops Declassified.

just_looken5h ago

@good i know i never said they were

I mentioned them as they were the last games under that ip well killzone was last on ps4 but still even though they are different devs they led to the lose of the ip.

I highly doubt they made up for there budget cost even killzone on ps4 had low sales for such a large ip at the time.

shinoff21838h ago

Infamous should atleast get remastered. I'd be cool with that

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH9h ago

Resistance 3 turned me off to the series but I’d love a reboot. KillZone I think can stay dead. Give me a new Resistance like 1or 2 and I’ll be happy.

JEECE8h ago

Except Resistance 1 and 3 were far more similar, 2 was the outlier. 3 was a great return to form after 2 changed so many things from the first game.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH7h ago

I didn’t like 3 and I didn’t find it similar to the first game.

Moegooner8h ago

2 was the best resistance game.

Huey_My_D_Long9h ago

I honestly never cared or liked killzone. Huge resistance fan though. I remember so many nights playing melee only on USS Lexington, and I like the alt history vibe.

P_Bomb9h ago

I’ve been barking up that tree for years. 😢

Keep barking, boy! Keep barking! Never give up hope. ;)

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow27d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo18226d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie26d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Hereandthere25d ago

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

ApocalypseShadow25d ago

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere25d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow25d ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

OtterX26d ago

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney24d ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno26d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno26d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

25d ago
fsfsxii25d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno25d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville78d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi78d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein78d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos78d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein78d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

Number1TailzFan78d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long78d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos79d ago (Edited 79d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts78d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername78d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai78d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.
