Game Focus: Rygar: The Battle Of Argus Review

Game Focus writes: "Admit it, when you first hear the word port, you likely cringe and expect the absolute worst, right? Tecmo knows it, and they've come to make port not such a dirty word with Rygar: Battle of Argus. Essentially what you're going to find here is a port of the original series reboot found on the PS2 around 6 years ago. The question is, can the game truly stand the test of time and change the perception of ports for the Wii?"

Pros

+ Controls nicely. Barely any waggle in main story.
+ Orchestral music is fantastic.
+ Some excellent boss battles.
+ Highly destructible environments.
+ Diskarmor is fun to use...

Cons

-...but incredibly slow.
- Animation is really stiff.
- No widescreen support.
- Hitting switches to access areas is really boring and tedious.
- Voice-acting is vomit-inducing.
- Bad camera.
- Price tag is too high for a port of a 6 year old PS2 game.

We need more of this franchise.

ApocalypseShadow1456d ago

Was a pretty cool game back then. And for those that didn't play it, the PS2 game was a pretty cool update of the franchise. Still got that one.

Could see a 2D update made like Bionic Commando got from Capcom.

"Could see a 2D update made like Bionic Commando got from Capcom."

This.
I have Bionic Commando Rearmed on both PSN and Steam. Would be nice to see Rygar get the same treatment. Or even like the recent Strider reboot.

I remember renting this and finishing it in one day. Thoroughly engrossing. Would like to see a follow up to this.

A follow up would be great!

I rented this and was glued to it until I beat it. This was the first metroidvania type game but unfortunately was forgotten. I'm glad someone's giving it the attention it deserves.

tieryas3963d ago

hey Bangoskank, yes, I loved this and was so happy to play through it again. Thanks for checking it out

Beating that game when I was like 10 remains one of my greatest gaming accomplishments.

tieryas3963d ago

ha ha, yeah, I remember beating it very fondly too. It was so tough because you had to do it in one sitting!

XtraTrstrL3963d ago

Well it wasn't forgotten, in 2002 they made a 3D PS2 Rygar: The Legendary Adventure. I owned this original one though, and it was a very cool metroidvania game. It was weird, how it'd be a top-down game in certain areas, then go to the sidescrolling in others. The music was always very memorable. They need to make another sequel, but in this same metroidvania style. If I remember correctly the PS2 game was just level based. This was a great game overall.

Rygar for the ps2 wasn't very good. I remember getting very excited because I loved the nes game but the ps2 game didn't come close to meeting my lofty expectations. Actually, I was so disappointed that I played it for about 10 minutes and put it down for good. I meant that the nes game was forgotten, not the franchise. It really isn't regarded as the classic it should have been. I like to make believe rygar ps2 never existed.
