Killzone 2 looks even better than what's shown in that video. The video isn't doing the game justice. I have the game and playing it on my Sammy HD TV is beyond UNBELIEVABLE. this gen for a time, was nearly in danger of becomming remembered for the generation of the unreal3 engine. lots of lazy devs have used this instead of investing time and money into their own engines. i just hope epic make something more notable next time....especially from the obscene amount of royaltie payments they have recieved from all the studios that have used it.

it's already reached it's pinnacle for the current hardware configurations imo, and i would like to see it being fazed out from future productions. gears1 was almost the max of what the unreal3 engine could achieve. they optimised it so much, there was nothing more they could squeeze out of it for the second. apart from a broader colour pallete.

I hope you are being sarcastic. From a business stand point, Gears of War series is far more profitable. They have released two games in the time that Killzone 2 was made. I agree that Killzone 2's engine is amazing...but you can't expect to release one game every five years. Lets hope that GG releases Killzone 3 in a year and a half now that their engine is established. Or better yet, license the tech over to other Sony studios.

Well, Uengine 3 is a multi platform engine, and is indeed heavily used on the 360.

However, ID has developed the tech5 engine, and is currently developing Quake 5, Doom4 and RAGE on it.

If all goes well, then the Tech5 engine will be the new main engine for 360 games, cause i can easily see the Tech5 engine outdo the Unreal engine.

um...foxgod...I don't know what you have been reading about tech engine 5...but its not exactly the 360's best friend right now...

the new engine uses an expanded system of Carmack's patented 'megatextures'...a system that spools in MASSIVE texture data in real time...

the PS3 is a perfect candidate for this, as confirmed by Carmack...the immensely capable CPU is a beast at the parallel code needed to do this streaming in real time...and Blu Ray allows for this massive texture data to be stored uncompressed on the disc...not having to unpack texture data into memory saves valuable processing power and memory bandwidth...as nothing it wasted for that process...

PC is also good for this, but he mentioned to expect a huge installation if you wanted the best performance on a game like Rage...while a PC has nearly infinite resources in terms of memory compared to a console...the option to have the texture banks compressed onto your HDD, for less installation space, will still be available...as having 4gigs of ram will allow more room for unpacking and 'storing' the textures in memory for longer periods of time...

then the 360...which has less memory bandwidth than the PS3 already (not less physical memory, lower bandwidth)...does not have a standard HDD...and DOES NOT have a media format capable of this megatexture stuff...this was 100% confirmed to 'hold back' the first game to use tech engine 5...which is Rage...and he also confirmed that 'hero shots' between the two consoles would be similar (most likely a gun model or something centered on screen that you are looking at the most)...but texture detail everywhere else would be marginally worse than the PS3 and PC versions of the title...

thats not fanboy bs...that is just taking exactly what he said and posting it here...maybe the differences won't be large (like the differences in textures between the two consoles for most multiplatform games)...maybe they will...as this is the same tech used in killzone 2...and one look at the ground in killzone 2 shows just how much better the textures are than ANY other console game...

but because of the engine being designed from the ground up with massive media space at the core...its not the best candidate to take over UE3 on the 360...my guess is MS will use UE3 as much as possible for the remainder of this generation...you can still get great results out of it on the 360 (and pS3) as gears 2 and UT3 easily prove...we haven't seen much of tech engine 5 yet, and its still unknown just how advanced it is compared to competition...

I don't know where you're reading from. Carmack has said repeatedly that the PS3's memory architecture isn't very good for megatextures. He's estimated that it takes the designers and developers twice as long to complete the content for the PS3 because they have to deal with split memory as well as lower streaming times from the disk (important to megatextures), which is 9mb/s on the PS3 and 15 mb/s on the 360.

The only issue he has with the 360 is disc size, but moreso, the added royalties that M$ wants per disc.

Actually Fox I would say that Gears2 has moments that go beyond anything I've seen in KZ2 yet. Not saying it's superior to KZ but honestly this is nothing more than a hype fest and people claiming what's better. Sure KZ2 for a fps looks great but with so much blandness it takes away from it's real factor in my eyes. Also I want to see the game 1st hand to see how stable it is. When watching vids I've noticed things like debris disapearing and little stuff that shouldn't be there. It's as if this engine is pushing the PS3 to it's limit's while GEars 2 which looks equal and better to me at times isn't even nudging the 360. 1st of all...what is with the 'if gears 2 was a fps'?...what does that have to do with anything...a third person perspective, by definition, leaves the camera further away from the environment...which DOES allow room for corner cutting...textures don't need to be as sharp, as you can't get the camera up against them...you are not 'as close' to the environment...

2nd...Gears 2 was a fps at one point...Epic just called it UT3 instead...and sped everything up...so yeah, it plays a lot faster...the visuals are the same though...

but there are countless mods for UT3 that slow it down, put it in third person, add a shaky cam and sprint mutator...and it truely looks like Gears 2...there is no way to argue that...textures are almost identical...blood and gore effects...identical...same spastic lighting...and same amount of bloom and background blur...

I am not saying Gears 2 doesn't look great...but I am absolutely confused at people saying that Gears 2 holds with killzone 2 from a tech perspective...you are confusing tech with art...if you think its bland...that is art...nothing more...yeah, lots of dark environments, lots of concrete...little color in areas...thats all decisions they made in terms of art direction...

but in terms of animation (what happens to an enemy when you empty a clip into him)...in terms of lighting (that same enemy having a real time shadow casted behind him from your muzzle flash)...the 200+ real lights on screen at any given moment...the uncompressed HD textures streamed off the disc in real time (one look at the ground in killzone 2 puts any texture debates about the PS3 to rest...nothing comes close to that)...these are areas that you simply can't argue with...these are areas superior to ANY game to date on a console (some of which trash crysis, the muzzle flare and hit response animation for example)...

if you don't want it to be better than Gears 2 tech wise for whatever reason...ok fine...but don't try to say its just fanboy hype making killzone 2 out to be something its not...there is simply zero argument that UE3 can compete with killzone 2's engine on a tech level...they ARE like night and day...Gears 2 looks great still, even more impressive that its using an engine that was more or less completed in 2006...but saying if UE3 made an fps that 'looked like gears 2, it would destroy killzone 2'...is simply wrong...

I'm sure al;l of that is true but I'm not entirely convinced how much of an effect the differences would actually be. The major thing that I had heard was that due to Microsofts rules and the use of DVD discs, Rage would look a lot worse on Xbox because they couldn't pack enough data on 2 discs. Microsoft charges huge royalties for games that go over 2 discs and as such Carmack and co can't really afford to put the 360 version on 3 or more discs to achieve the same level of quality that would appear on all the other platforms.

It's also key to note that Rage as a game is not designed to be a graphical showcase game, that's what Doom 4 is for. That is to say that Rage, in my opinion, isn't exactly pushing what they're capable of doing with id tech 5

Show me a clip of how many charaters are on screen at once in Gears. Seriously. If you can't have more then 10 online at once and KZ2 has what 32/ 36/ something like that... It's huge. Now when i say show me how many bad guys are on screen at once I don't mean in the background moving like an animation that can't be shot. I mean 30-40 guys rushing you that you have to shoot down and if even one gets to you your dead type thing... You don';t get that Gears can't handle it plain and simple and thats tech where are KZ2 you have all that with explosions and animations and everything all at once. Even more proof of the PS3 power is MAG. 256 players online at once all firing bullets in different directions, all calculated realtime and everything.... From a tech standpoint Gears 2 does not compare to KZ2 or a slew of other games on the PS3. Tell me any game on the 360 and I can tell you one of a similar genre that stomps it on the PS3 and as of next year when they are all released the argument is over and done.

In the picture at the top neither looks particularily good for some reason. But I prefer the look of Gears 2 there, it's actually more colourful.

From all the screens I've seen including the pic posted at the top, Guerilla still can't seem to get eyes to look right. It was a problem with Killzone 1 and I assumed they would have sorted it.

It might just be me but they just don't look natural but I've seen the eyes Crystal Dynamic made for the latest Tomb Raider, the amount of detail in crazy.(in an otherwise unimpressive game)

Eyes make characters seem lifelike though, the eyes in Halo 3 didn't look right either and it's probably the reason I didn't like Keyes, she looked freaky!

Gears1&2 and the K2 demo. K2 looks great, however, please lets hope the released game gets better than the demo. Cmon, lets all shoot the exploding red barrels to take down the bridge, Protect me by shooting the gas canisters while i open a door. It's gotta be better than that. Sure Mirrors Edge has better lighting on the main character's hands, and Street Fighter 4 has a teeny bit more anti-aliasing. But the average person can't tell the difference when playing these games on their television. I almost thought the SFIV Aliasing articles were fake until i pressed my eyeball up against my HDTV.

Its really weird but I just noticed in 2 different gamestops in my area of new york city does not have a single Killzone 2 ad in thier stores.

There is no mention of killzone 2 even in thier coming soon sign behind the register. there is no boxes to pre-order or anything either.

Two different genres of gaming. Each is using graphical power in different places. Third person vs. first person is apples to oranges.

The only FPS on 360 I know that is first party exlusive is Halo. Since Halo looks like garbage, then yes Killzone 2 wins.

If we are going to compare third person shooters on both consoles, then I guess Socom Vs Gears 2 that Gears 2 wins by a landslide.

Here's a good question though, since when did a game LOOKING better determine if it was a better product to result in more fun. If they rereleased the original Golden Eye for the N64 on marketplace and PSN to download, along with online play. I would assume a lot of people would enjoy it. Outdated graphics don't mean squat, because fun is fun no matter what it looks like to someone else.

After watching the gameanyone.com walkthough of EXCESSIVEMOTIONBLURZONE 2 (kidding..but true) it is clear that this is really one beautiful game. But this game does NOTHING to take away from Gears 1 or 2's graphical feast. Killzone 2 is like a gorgeous woman who gets all dressed up to go out to dinner and ends up eating in a Burger King. Facts: She is still gorgeous..But she is still only eating fast food. Epic put their money where there mouth was and released two amazing game experiences in the same time period it took to bring Killzone 2 to the market. You can have one thousand articles that prove G2 doesn't look as good as K2. But, the truth will come out that Killzone 2's single player campaign doesn't even come close to surpassing the what Gears brought to the table. Show me a Co-op Killzone 2 and then turn on the same T.V. and compare. Until then PS3 gamers should just buy K2 and enjoy it for what it is. But don't throw stones at inceredibly successful titles like Gears and Halo..when your doing it from a glass house.

Look I'm not going to bash K2 for what it does. You would have to be a blind fanboy to not compliment K2 as a graphical monster. And you are absolutely right, seeing is not the same as playing. But after seeing WHAT you will be playing, I just saved $560 dollars. PS3 fans have been bashing the hell out of Gears 2 and Halo 3 for weeks and weeks based only on the potential of this game. But, like I said after seeing what this game has to offer, I believe that people will realize what games like Gears, Call of duty, and Halo ACTUALLY accomplished.

After everyone plays this game, I want someone to compare anything in K2's campaign to the first time you fought the beserker (Gears 1), the first time you used the chainsaw in both Gears, Finding out what happened to Dom's wifey, fighting any of those ridiculously huge bosses, and of course riding the Brumack. These are classic moments in an epic game that unlike K2 can be experienced with a friend in co-op. As for the multiplayer? Now that may be where K2 shines. And since the took Call of Duty's level up system it should be something of great replay value. But I salute Gears 2 for for the addicting as hell Horde mode. Either way, It's good to see PS3 getting a big title, but K2 ain't enough to make me get the system yet.

Finally, someone that ain't scared to express their honest opinion. KZ2 is too dark for my taste, story too shalow, and gameplay a complete turn off! Gears 2's character animation blows everything else out the water. By the way, it takes resources to render characters in 3rd person more than 1st, just ask the devs.

I don't know about you, but I've played the Killzon 2 Demo, and it's not a blury game, playing Crysis on all High settings on 1680 x 1050 resolution is Blurry, everywhere you turn there's blur effects, but hey, those are REAL motion blur, not the cheap ones that COD4 uses. and you're just watching a game from a website, it is a total useless "fact", play the demo on a 52" LCD HDTV like I did and then compare that to the video on the site. From what I saw, it wasn't as blurry as Crysis. Although Killzone 2's textures and Crysis's textures are almost equal in detail, Crysis 1 ups it though but still, it's pretty damn close.

and dude, if you're just watching what you might (and might never will) play, IT IS NOT THE SAME AS ACTUALLY PLAYING IT.

#1 Its mostly an indoor environment
#2 Yea the Hive looked good but the amount of screen tearing in this stage was horrendous, and putting this side by side would have made Gears of War2 look like sh!t.
#3 The crash sequences was the main reason I choose that scene in Gears of War 2

Gears 2 just seems to be sooooo much fun, and then apart from that...I enjoy Halo 3 and COD 4. If you are trying to tell me that the difference between Doom/Wolfenstein(I don't know about Halflife, cause I have not played it) is the same as the difference between Halo 3/COD4/GEars2 in comparison to KZ 2...then something is seriously wrong...and the rest of my post will probably be over your head. You say KZ2 took 4 years to make, well most of that time was spent building the actual engine. Also the building of the engine is what took up most of the budget.

Now Gears, technically has been in development since 2003/2004, when the UE2 engine was released, as I reckon work on the next engine would have already started (UE4 is already being worked on). Gears had a lower budget as all the had to do was make a few tweaks to the engine, and design the game. I'm sure that if you add on the budget for the development of the UE3 engine, onto the Gears budget, it will come out as being close to Killzone 2's budget.

Its just small things like this that many people forget.

GOW2 is an awesome looking game, its serious eye candy all the way through, but at the end of the day its just the Unreal engine running at is best..

One thing KZ2 will totally hold over GOW2 is the physics engine.

KillZone 2 is a special experience...for the masses that have not played or seen KZ2 LIVE in action...you really do not know what you are talking about...

It's hard to put KillZone 2 into words if you have not seen this game in action....But I have to say KillZone 2 on my 32" HD CRT 1080i DVI-HDMI connection...playing in 6.1 digital surround sound...has the be one of the best looking games I have had the chance to experience(Demo) and I hate to take anything away from MGS4, Uncharted and Gears...But until GOW3,Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain...KillZone 2 will be hail King for years to come...

Also static images prove nothing because there are post processing effects that can only be appreciated while Killzone 2 is in motion. The truth of the matters is believe what you see and play Killzone 2 for yourself. And instead of posting biased pictures try using facts! Here one for you. Not one time during the entire Killzone 2 demo did the game drop frames or show any screen tearing even during the most intense scene. EDIT: I saw the video now. I think both games defintely have areas in which they both look strong. Texture work on the environment is evidently better in Gears, as is the character detail, and Gears is sharper on the whole. Sharpness gets a really hit in this video. Gears looks much better than in this video. And the video only shows the effects and lighting in both games.

Judging from the videos I have seen, the big complain I have with Gears is the heavy depth-of-field used to hide the background. You really cannot see that far into the distance.

Gears looks great, but to me it's very obvious there is much more stuff happening in Killzone 2. More moving/flying objects, more effects (smoke, particles, lighting), bigger draw-distance.

My biggest complain about Killzone 2 is the "uncanny vally". The soldiers still have that doll-face. Lifeless eyes staring during gameplay. Of course in the cut-scenes the facial-expressions is life-like. But during gameplay it breaks apart. The hellgasts are easy, because their face are always covered.

I thought I was the only one that noticed that, but yes Gears has some of, if not, THE best character animation and lifelike visuals I've seen in a game character.

That's nothing though, pop in Gears for PC pump up the resolutions. Mindblowing! Only two games blew my mind this gen and it was Gears 1 for 360 and Gears for PC.

When it comes down to the nittey gritty it's how the game plays not how it looks I'm still playing PS1, Dreamcast, and old PC games such as Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall, I will say I like appearance but its becoming sort of like a crutch for gaming now in days in the hopes of developers making the most realistic looking game ever, their taking away aspects that I grew up with in old fashion gaming such as the NES and Genesis just playing the game and having fun, no matter what console of preference you choose. I chose the PS3 not because it was suppose to be superior to the 360 I chose it because I knew there would be games I greatly enjoy like MGS 4, KZ 2, GOW 3, DMC 4, and FF 13 while I also discovered new titles I grew attached such as Uncharted and LBP

Actually I thought this vid showed how great Gears2 looked, the charachter models easily hold their own, but when it comes to the environment effects and lighting the edge definitely goes to KZ2. KZ2 is impressive, I just think some over-state how impressive compared to Gears2, but I understand thats par for the course and fans and gamers have every right to be excited. Nice comparison vid.

However, I think that Gears looks pretty damn good also. This coming from a Ps3 owner. Gears is probably the game I would buy immediately should I get a 360.

Awesome comparison! Both games look great but the physics engine in Killzone 2 is just unbeatable. You can’t deny it, KZ2’s environment really looks fantastic, and in my opinion it rivals Crisis’s physics engine. When have you ever seen volumetric smoke swirl like that in real-time app? Personally i think K2's tech is better from particles to lighting.Gears2 is hardly a slouch in this respect but you have to give win to K2

Texture quality is another thing as no matter how much fancy gfx is being thrown around, textures are not as insanely detailed as they are for the most in Gears

Framerate is hit and miss with Gears compared to K2

In graphics yes i would say for just sheer polish K2 does a better job

Gameplay is something different altogether of course.Gears gun play scenarios are more layered and varied an a to b experience - K2 tends to use the basic idea with not a lot if any in the way of layering

I was disappointed in Gears2 but it's best bits are simply wonderful to play.Horde is of course worth buying the game for.

In terms of gameplay, i'm only seeing a strong showing from K2's multiplayer.For overall graphics quality however K2 is more consistent but from all the walkthrough videos iv'e seen, nothing so far is as staggering the later underground sections of Gears2 - first time this gen iv'e been blown away by sheer scale in a game

Personally i think the graphic style of K2 is very good but it's very dull and makes yearn to see even a bit of colour

I would like to see guerrilla´s engine do something a little bit different to see how flexible it is. I guess we´ll have to see the full game to see how much variation KZ2 shows. As far as all the screenshots and vids goes, it is pretty constant (palette-wise) which can be a decision made by the dev, but which I personaly find a little tedious (visually)

Anyways, this game will hopefully be a blast to play and a joy to the eyes, no doubts about it. I´m just being picky here and trying to find the flaws (it´s easy to speak of the virtues, images speak for themselves)

However I never imagined that there was such a big difference from Gears of War 2 to KZ2 in terms of technology until I saw this video. It seems that after comparing the two I can't say that GeoW2 uses HDR while KZ2. Hell, maybe GeoW2 does but compared to KZ2 it doesn't look like it does, and the funny thing is that KZ2 might not be using HDR as the game is using deferred rendering. All in all Killzone 2 blows GeOW2 out of the water in terms of almost everything from a technical stand point, except maybe in character models.

Ok .... Ive been relying on Lens Of Truth in past for honest and decent comparison between two gaming consoles. This recent comparison between GeOW2 and Killzone has not only raised a doubt but tarnished lens of truth comparison credibility.

1. CHARACTER:
--------------
First of all the comparer, in the very first shot is comparing characters with lighting and shadow detail in two different environment.
-Gears of War 2: Dom is in a Hospital facility where everything is evely lit.

-Killzone 2: Showing character detail in the outside open world.
Result - Ofcourse there will be complete lighting detail difference between two environments (closed and open).

2. Atmospheric
---------------
-Gears of War 2: For the love of God, can't u see ... Gears of War 2 is having complete window roof and side wall. How the F light will show penetration (ray of light) effect when there is nothin holding it back.

-Killzone 2: 100% impressive .... but ... but ... consider this Sun can only sunshine at one place, it cannot sunshine simultaneously at 360 degree. The reason I said that ... the way ray of light coming through crack open roof ... it seems that Sun source has been placed on the left side of the game. But when the character moves left and right ... the way light enters right in the middle of the screen shows that they have placed one to many light source for sun and positioned at wrong places resulting in fake atmospheric setting. Sun can only shine and create angle of dynamic lighting at one place but not 360 degree around.

3. Bullet Effect
----------------
Gears of War 2: Well Cliffy B. couldve been bit attentive to this part as this game is all about gunning around enemies. So yeah bullet impact and effect at different surfaces should have been impressive, though improved from first Gears of War but not the level where it can astonish game players.

Killzone 2: Well what can I say ... hats off to GG ... they really made impressive bullet effect on different surfaces.

4. Grenade Effects and Explosion effect.

Gears of War 2: Well both of em are equal in their explosion animation cause each of em are designed differently so there is nothing much to discuss about. Both are equally good and impressive.

5. Ingame cinematic:

Killzone 2 is brilliant but wrong/too many placement of light source and getting unnecessary glare and is seriously what turns me off when playing this game. And just one more thing Muzzle fire effect is not impressive at all when compared with Gears of War 2. When firing bullets with Gears of War 2 ... u do get the feeling that uve got a massive powerfull gun and trying to bring enemies down.

Last thing ... when bullet fired in Killzone 2 ... it seems that flashlight is being turned on and off ... they should have allocated different color scheme to fire flash effect on surrounding.

Rest everything is beautifully designed and rendered. Good Luck to both.

KZ2 does look better. I really REALLY like GeoW2 looks also. So it´s not an abyss of difference between both. I will say a pretty fair difference given time and effort put into making KZ2 the graphic flagship for PS3 and the fact that it is built on a brand new Engine made specially for both the console and the game. On a 10 point scale (technically speaking, take apart your personal art style likings) , being Crysis at max detail a 10...
I would say KZ2 is a 9,5 and GeoW2 an 8,5...
