Activision CEO says Amazon Luna has the most game streaming customers

Activision-Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick believes Amazon Luna is the largest cloud gaming service in the world by virtue of 200m Amazon Prime subscribers.

The person who wrote this article Derek Strickland is a complete insult to the craft of journalism because he has blindly copied a PR statement from Activision's CEO who obviously has a horse in the race, and provided no real context - nor did he do any FACT-CHECKING.

Strickland wrote: "Since Prime has over 200 million subscribers as of 2022, it could be technically correct to say Luna is the largest cloud gaming provider by virtue of its convertible Prime subscriber base."

Amazon Prime may well have 200 million subscribers but it is dishonest to assume they all use the Amazon Luna cloud gaming service because clearly Prime video streaming is the core feature that people use and it's readily available on multiple hardware devices via an app. Besides all that Luna is not even available in all countries that have Prime! It's only available in the US, UK, Canada and Germany.

Shit articles like Dereck Strickland's should be taken down.

rippermcrip373d ago

Maybe they updated the article, but the article most certainly does provide a lot of context and explains what you said and more.

343_Guilty_Spark373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

Well the CMA uses all GamePass and Gold subscriptions for determining how many cloud gaming customers Xbox has even if only 1-10% actually even use Xcloud.

VenomUK373d ago

@rippermcrip. The original story has since been updated. The author said he deleted a tweet for the story. He says: "Hey all, I decided to delete the Luna tweet (should have done it earlier!) because not all Amazon Prime subscribers have access to Luna. Turns out there's tons of countries and regions where Luna is not available. Apologies for the mix-up."
https://twitter.com/DeekeTw...

The article was updated and badly. Instead of correcting the incorrect information, the incorrect information was left in and then the correct information was added. The unchallenged claim is "Since Prime has over 200 million subscribers as of 2022, it could be technically correct to say Luna is the largest cloud gaming provider by virtue of its convertible Prime subscriber base."

It's only further down the article that you get the section that begins "More context is needed, though. Luna is not available in all countries, so it's not proper to say all Prime subscribers are also Luna users..."This was added later.

The correct way to fix the story is add context to the incorrect claim made by TweakTown.

Lol, I'm a Prime subscriber and didn't even know about Luna. I mean, I've heard the name, but never looked into it. I had no idea it was included w Prime membership.

*checks* can't use it in my country

How many people actually know it's included w their Prime and use the service? I'm guessing many others don't even know it exists, despite being subscribed to Prime.

EvertonFC373d ago

Didn't even know Amazon Luna was a thing lol, can't say I've ever seen it on my prime.

Amazon is not the one trying to buy Activision, so the regulators do not care, plus, having 200 million Amazon Prime Subscribers and saying that equates to your cloud gaming service user base is very reaching.

At this point you can say Netflix which is starting to release crap games is the biggest of them all.

EvertonFC373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

The new valiants heart wasn't crap on Netflix, ONLY game I've ever played on a mobile though.

Vits373d ago

Well, technically speaking Amazon's Luna has the potential to be the largest streaming service. But I doubt it is right now, given the limited availability.

ChronoJoe373d ago

It's problem is that it doesn't have much leverage over the industries games. So it will be hard for amazon to gain a foothold without making many acquisitions. They need better content, a similar problem to Microsoft but much more severe in Amazon's case, they're a long way off.

porkChop373d ago

That's technically true but Amazon doesn't even advertise Luna. No one knows it exists.

Double_O_Revan373d ago

I recently saw a banner ad on the home screen of my Fire TV and thought to myself "omg I completely forgot that existed."

EvertonFC373d ago

I didn't and I've had prime for 2 years lol

ModsDoBetter373d ago

Tried it out now that it released here in the UK.
Very laggy despite a high speed fibre connection.

CrimsonWing69373d ago

I’ve ran into no lag on my end. I’m in the US though. I don’t have fiber, but my download speed is 400 mb/s.

What games were lagging for you? I’d like to see if I run into this since none of the games I played had any lag or latency issues.

ModsDoBetter373d ago

Fortnite & Resi 2.

Streaming won’t compete with fully installed games for a long time imo.

I was an early adopter of Stadia and that was pretty bad too. Like the fps wasn’t too inconsistent but the resolution would drop like a bomb so often.

CrimsonWing69373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

@olMyerslo

Interesting.

I played Control and there were 0 input lag, frame dips, stuttering, or any issues I could see. I was really impressed with it.

I literally couldn’t have told you the difference between playing a fully installed game or streaming. Then again,I don’t know your situation, like if multiple people on your network are using bandwidth, your signal strength, etc.

I didn’t know Resident Evil 2 was on there. I’ll check that out and see if I run into any issues.

343_Guilty_Spark373d ago

UK has notoriously poor Internet speeds.

ModsDoBetter373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

Does it?

That’s news to me as the UK is currently sitting 34th out of 220 countries surveyed for average country-wide internet speeds in 2022.

“Notoriously poor” would imply this is something talked about but I have never heard any complaints relating to our speeds compared with other countries.

My current speed is 1Gbps, for example.

CantThinkOfAUsername373d ago

Speed isn't the metric that matters in data streaming. Latency, Jitter and Packet Loss are. Once you meet the minimum bandwidth ('speed') requirements, the others become the playing factors (no pun intended).

There's also server-side ('cloud') issues that would provide a terrible user experience.

Microsoft's quest for short-term $$$ is doing long-term damage to Windows, Surface, Xbox, and beyond

Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's plans to increase every department's margins.

"The plan to move Xbox games to other platforms is codenamed "Latitude" internally, and I know there's debate and unease at Microsoft about whether or not this is a good idea. More upcoming Microsoft-owned games slated for PlayStation are already being developed. At least for now, they're potentially obvious games you'd most likely expect. And yes, while it's true Microsoft is a prolific publisher on PlayStation already, it has typically revolved around specific franchises like Minecraft. From what I've heard, Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation, and it all revolves around Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood's mandate to increase every department's margins. "

Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware.

"Yeah, they are going to kill Xbox hardware."

It's for the best.

Quit stringing along xbox fans and screwing over PlayStation owners.

crazyCoconuts13h ago

Take good care of those Xboxes if you have 'em ...

outsider162412h ago

An Xbox game on a Playstation. Never in my years of gaming did i ever thought this was gonna happen.

jznrpg8h ago

It is dying anyway so doesn’t make much of a difference

VersusDMC8h ago

No way can they get rid of the hardware as probably 90% of game pass subscribers are hardware users.

Highly doubtful those users will move to PC or Cloud to subscribe there and the competition (Sony and Nin) will never have gamepass on their system.

If they want to keep the current subscribers, they need to keep releasing new hardware.

i think it will kill off the xbox brand. windows will be fine.

but there is and would be a chance that xbox might be killed off in the future. if they fail to make the money they put in. imo.

S2Killinit16h ago

They wont kill it, but they will go fully PC while keeping xbox as a brand, and go multiplatform for the most part. They will also work tirelessly to diminish console gaming’s importance.

PRIMORDUS13h ago

It would be best if Xbox goes the way of Sega, just make and publish games. I know I myself will not support them at all with buying games from them, you all can. 🙃

ChasterMies12h ago

The Xbox brand will live for the games. I don’t expect Microsoft to entirely drop out of gaming hardware. They make Surface tablets and laptops. They’ll make Xbox branded hardware for those that want it.

"Microsoft is pushing for no "red line" for what games could come to PlayStation"

Forza and Starfield next?

Skuletor17h ago

Starfield would be no surprise and there's the rumor that it will come to Playstation after the Shattered Space DLC, Forza (along with Halo and Gears of War) I find less likely but I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually end up on PlayStation too, especially if Xbox give up on hardware and go the Sega route.

shinoff218317h ago

Not to worried about forza. I'd rather see others like what inxile and obsidian are working on. Starfield sounds like it needs more time in the oven so let it cook first imo. If starfield and it's a small if does release on ps it'll be in the fall around the time for dlc or right at the dlc and come packaged with it.

In the words of Phil Spencer when he was talking about Nintendo last year

“It's just taking a long time for Microsoft to see that their future exists off of their own hardware"

S2Killinit16h ago

Yup. MS are a cancer to console gaming.

Aloymetal16h ago

100%!!
I wonder what happened to that dude that was always here posting those court articles with cartoons about MS spending all those billions in studios. He suddenly disappeared, I guess he doesn't like bad news when the green brand is in trouble. No new articles from him as of late...

PRIMORDUS13h ago

Yup, and it's only going to keep spreading.
