CyberConnect2 will close its Montreal studio in July

Developer CyberConnect2 confirmed the incoming closure of its satellite office in Montreal, Canada. At the end of July, it'll be shutting down its only other office beyond the main one stationed in Fukuoka, Japan.

The Montreal office opened in 2016, 20 years after the developer was originally founded. Its statement noted that the second office "led CyberConnect2 on a creative journey in the development of tools and cutting-edge techniques used in creating games."

No mention was made in the developer's statement about if it will offer any severance or transitional help to those about to be laid off.

Atari has acquired Intellivision. The company announced today that it had acquired its long-time rival, ending one of the original console rivalries, dating back to the 1970s.

Wow.... two of my earliest gaming platforms. All they need is Coleco to round things out.

This is like Nintendo buying SEGA.

OtterX1h ago

YES! Colecovision was my start! I came to know Mario there in Donkey Kong before the NES was even a thing. :)

Good piece of history here.

edit: I wanted to read it but the cookies pop up is stopping me.

badboyz093h ago

This was just before my time. I do remember my mom's friend having one all dusty in her apartment back in the day.

People forget that console wars are part of the history of this industry. The console wars were started by competitive companies all the way back then and continued through Sega vs Nintendo, Jaguar/3DO/NeonGeo, and PlayStation vs Nintendo and Xbox.

These companies are across oceans and competing for the same business. These companies created the console wars, not crazy fanboys.

anast47m ago

Console wars are fun. It's fun to be a fanboy too. I don't get what's wrong with any of this as entertainment.

Young kid school yard banter was fun. 30-40+ year olds still doing it is just disturbing. Many my age (50+) grew out of that a long time ago. We may still have our preferences, but we also embrace a more central position because there is a lot to enjoy on a wide range of genres and systems.

You'll understand one day and then things will forever change.

jznrpg2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

I had both. Snafu on Intellivision was addicting as hell. Also had Colecovision which had Time Pilot. Combat was probably my favorite Atari game and both Atari and Intellivision had similar games like Pitfall and Jungle Hunt. It’s been so long I don’t really remember which game I liked bettter out of those but I did play my Intellivision a bit more than Atari though I’m not sure why besides Snafu. That was 40+ years ago damn I’m old lol

Dagexon59m ago

Ahh you're making me all nostalgic! Not old enough to have played these on original hardware but my first console was a bootleg console from Costco that had a bunch of intellivision and atari games. Then had a lot of fun with intellivision and atari collections on ps1 and 2.
Snafu was one of my favourite games and me and my partner still occasionally play it to this day

Helldivers 2 studio hires new CEO, but Pilestedt isn’t going anywhere

Pilestedt writes: "Hey everyone,

Big update, I've decided to hire @ShamsJorjani as the new CEO of @ArrowheadGS ! We go way back and I wouldn't trust the business in any other hands than his. (...and he comes with an impressive resume and love for games)

But what about me and my involvement in @Helldivers2 ? Well, I'm glad you asked! I am taking the role of Chief Creative Officer, which means I will spend MORE time with the team and 100% of my focus on the games and community!"

Ambitious dream but sorry you don't make good RPGs. Just online co-op shooters.

ThinkThink1d ago

Not yet, but they can grow. Sounds like that's the plan. They have a new CEO this week as well. I can see they pushing helldivers 2 to other consoles, Mac and even high end mobile devices. The game could become a global force and sony can rack up their MAUs.

Eonjay1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Sure for Helldivers. Surprised Sony doesn't put Helldivers 1 on mobile.... but in reality, I think Arrowhead is talking about creating original IPs that they own. What I question is how they will do this (while remaining multiplatform) without expanding. For HD2, Sony contributed a lot. If they do this by themselves, they are going to hire more people (which isn't a bad thing as long as its sustainable). I love that they are trying to 'stay small' but even when looking at HD2, you get the feeling that they were woefully underprepared to deal with the success they had. Even to today, it takes too long to get bugs addressed.

Another story said that players had stopped playing because of lack of new content. We have know about the new factions since launch but one doubts that they have the internal resources to get new content added at the pace they need to. If they are looking for the kind of success they claim, they need to invest in the resources that will allow them to attract and keep as many players as possible.

SimpleDad13h ago

The new CEO Shams is gonna burn this game to the ground. It was good while it lasted.
Now the real nickel-and-dime will begin.

Just wait and see.

Huey_My_D_Long59m ago

lol I feel like this comment went over my head.
What are the down votes for?

shinoff218312h ago(Edited 12h ago)

You ain't wrong. Lostpotato. I'd rather see an rpg then another shooter. Shame though cause it'd probably be an online rpg ugghhh

XiNatsuDragnel1d 1h ago

Ambitious hopefully y'all can achieve it

Palitera17h ago

They could start by putting any kind of story into their games and ditching the BS of "but we have a game master to direct your irrelevant actions".

shaenoide1d ago

Being the new Blizzard in neither a compliment or a good thing.

thorstein23h ago

When the Blizzard symbol appeared on a title, it used to mean quality. Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft...I think that's what they're referring to.

S2Killinit21h ago

Yeah I remember those days as well.

Skuletor20h ago

"Don't you guys have phones?"

CrimsonWing6923h ago

Not if those games are going to be GaaS.

-Foxtrot4h ago

Maybe if they grow they can split their teams in two

One does games like Helldivers and the other a single player driven RPG game

CrimsonWing694h ago(Edited 4h ago)

We’ll see. With the massive success of Helldivers 2 and the continual flops of things like FF7 Rebirth and a GaaS game like Concord right around the corner and seeing people’s comments on hype for that game leads me to believe we’re f*cked.

Helldivers 2 proved GaaS is a better gamble than traditional games right now and with Jim Ryan already setting the wheels in motion for a GaaS initiative all we can do is wait and see.
