I’d say 8 is good for RE4… it’s great and I’d give it a 9, but I’m okay with it getting an 8.

sealava416d ago

EDGE gave Final Fantasy X a 6/10 at its time ... soo yeah.

CosmicTurtle416d ago

It was 20 years ago. The game did okay, move on.

Ricdog416d ago (Edited 416d ago )

Again, all these scores are irrelevant and falling for false nostalgia. While the overall remake is decent and updated for modern hardware (not that well actually), the game is an overall a failure to the real fans. Not to mention all modern reviews praising RE4 as a legendary game (which it is) are dishonest in saying it was universally loved!

TRUTH: RE4 was actually divisive amongst the true RE fans upon realize. Despite being a awesome game in its own right (gameplay wise), many fans rightly predicted it would help degrade the franchise into mediocre action for future titles...which came true. So RE4's legacy does hold some blame for the future miss that happened.

I can only speak for ps5 for what I have, although my complaints are true across other platforms from what I can see. Anyway, despite the new controls Leon's movement is worse than in the original. His actual movement control is clunky with a noticeable input lag (he runs past the input of the control stick). For a game that really works best with player positioning, this is terrible. Even worse is the unforgiveable amount of cut content: no U3 boss, Assignment Ada/Separate Ways game modes are gone, no laser sights for proper aiming (except pistol upgrades), separate paths section of main story is removed, missing weapons ("flame gernades, PRL") with no alternatives provided, missing costumes (no non DLC unlockable Leon Ganster suite). Not only did they charge modern full prices for a Remake, but technically released it with less content than the original (payed DLC excuse is a disgrace)!

fsfsxii416d ago

There is a case for the missing ada chapters, the original GC version launched without them, and its coming as DLC so no biggie. Yeah you could argue that they could've included it, but game development is lengthy and not an easy task.
oh no they cut out the flame grenade, not quite a loss as compared to the loss of U3, that one i'm pissed about.
"true RE fans" lmao touch grass bro

Ricdog414d ago

Don't swallow the modern gravy train, its unjustified retroactive praise. I said true RE fans in reference to back in the day, its been like 18 years since then. I get that a chunk of the modern RE fanbase wasn't around then. Doesn't change the fact that RE4 was mixed received from the community upon release. Its constant releases upon every new console generation since then have given the false impression that is was always beloved.

Your right about Separate Ways not being in the GC version, although it became standard with every single release since

NRGuitarist415d ago

My biggest gripe is with the controls (general movement/running/turning), which I too am finding exceptionally clunky and sluggish when in the heat of combat, especialy compared to the other recent remakes of RE2 and RE3. ACG also noted the "stiff" control present. This has caused me some frustration during certain encounters. I've come straight from the Dead Space Remake which, to me, had much tighter and more responsive control overall, and I'm really noticing it in RE4.

I'm a huge RE fan and have been since day one, but for me RE4 was always my least preferred (other than 6 - yuck) as it got a little whacky beyond the village and I somewhat lost interest with the goofiness of it all. The remake is generally really good, and the increased intensity of the firefights has really engaged me, but the control is something I hope they can tighten up a bit.

Regarding cut content, DLC should be addressing some of those points which I'm personally okay with. It isn't a case like RE3 where vast portions were reduced or cut completely and never added. I actually really like the changes to level design and pacing so far - this is where I find remakes often succeed or fail - so the odd cut boss encounter won't upset me so long as the other changes outweigh that (which they have done for me, so far!).

Long comment to say I'm just finding the control too sluggish at the moment 😂 Oh, and I still don't like the implementation of rain in its current state (especially how it horribly bounces off Leon's head and shoulders 😂). Otherwise, enjoying it!

Ricdog414d ago (Edited 414d ago )

Funny, since the OG versions I always said that Dead Space was a sci-fi RE4 with better controls. And even with these remakes, it still holds true lol. But yea I hope this is something they can tweak and patch because the movement just isn't up to the task given the new quicker enemy behavior. They made the combat engagements faster, but without better fluidity in movement...the gameplay feels uneven.

Yea I mean the cut content isn't unexpected, but it still feels dirty that Capcom is gonna paywall stuff that we all know is unoriginal. The other game modes, especially Separate Ways, are obvious things they could have included in the game (guarantee they probably already have it finished) but they're obviously gonna milk it for more cash as DLC.

I agree that the overall remake is fine. Visually looks great and its really nice to see the change in the level designs, enemy behavior, etc... But this game has been getting 10/10s sometimes which it obviously doesn't deserve. There are clear technical issues (instability in consoles), control input lag (xbox I hear is especially bad), RE Engine is already showing its age (this game ain't pushing no graphical boundaries), and already mentioned cut content. Its a great, and needed, update to a classic. But it arguably isn't even the 'definitive' RE4 experience. On pure value, I might still say the HD Project is the superior experience.

If you're wanting more PSVR 2 support, you should probably buy all of these games.

Speak with your wallet!

Profchaos58d ago

Bit rich to have to buy games you don't want because you want Sony to support the expensive headset they sold us which cost as much as the console it runs on beyond paying third partys to support it.
Seriously in terms of first party we have horizon on day 1 and a gt 7 vr mode.

They seemingly have made little effort to support it beyond paying Capcom to make re games in VR or a second party studio to make firewall which was mismanaged.

I'm a day 1 psvr2 user and the only thing I'm excited for right now is PC support.

I commented recently this bespoke VR game development model we have right now clearly doesn't work

crazyCoconuts58d ago

On the one hand I feel like there's been plenty of smaller non-AAA games to play and occupy me as a supplement to my flat screen gaming.
But I agree that Sony has done nothing to elevate this beyond the niche it's in and into the mainstream where it would be economical to create AAA games for it.

Babadook758d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Most of these games are worth owning for most people; I own all but 2 of them in fact. So I agree with kevco33. I think you're crazy if you downplay this list quite frankly. Sony can't keep funding software if people don't buy any of it, the ball is squarely in OUR court.

Sony has spent a lot on 3rd party stuff this gen like RE.

phoenixwing58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

Saving up for the headset is my first hurdle. Let alone buying games I don't want lol

mudakoshaka58d ago

People downvoting you for not having enough finances...what a world we live in, haha

phoenixwing58d ago (Edited 58d ago )

@mudako
They feel affronted at the very thought that I don't plunk down 500 immediately lol I have a little over 900 games in my backlog I've been buying games instead of hardware ever since I got my PC and ps5. I just don't know if vr is really for me honestly. Every time I have a couple hundred allocated to video games it makes more sense to buy a bunch of flat games instead of vr ones

mudakoshaka58d ago

I have 9 out of these 10 games. I try to buy all the VR games I like to support the advancement of VR!

TheEroica57d ago (Edited 57d ago )

I spoke with my wallet after watching the first headset get weak support. Easy pass until Sony earns my money. Feel bad for those who parted with 500 bucks, falling for the hype that Sony was actually gonna support this thing.

I own 7 of these titles off the list, lol.

NotoriousWhiz58d ago

I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding onto my psvr 2. I enjoy what it has currently, but it seems unlikely to get anything else. Might be better off just waiting for something with more support if that ever comes.

Profchaos58d ago

As a fellow psvr2 owner the question seemingly comes down to do you own a PC.

I think I'm all in I have a habit to hold onto my systems anyhow I still have my psvr1 to hell I still have my NES.

But while it's still worth something yeah you could sell it and if Sony turns the ship around you should be able to buy another one for less than you soldmit for I feel like we won't see any fix for the headset for the next 2 years rumours show that Sony has no current first party VR games in active development after they closed London studios

The whole psvr2 situation has left me feeling a little burnt on PlayStation as a whole to be honest. The first psvr felt experimental but it was supported far more than this superior headset

MIDGETonSTILTS1758d ago

GT7 surprised me, because I hate racing games, but i poured 100 hours into it way too quickly.

I’m looking forward to the Metro VR game this year, and I hope that WW2 dogfighter game releases eventually.

talocaca58d ago

I have most of them 😅

Waiting for a sale on Synapse and Arizona Sunshine 2.....also Metro coming this year looks great.
