Still can't believe how cheap Square sold off these developers with IP's...

If I was a Square shareholder, I would severely pissed.

Magic_Spatula615d ago

It's all being used to fund their NFT crap anyway. It's not like they needed billions to do it.

VersusDMC615d ago

They bought eidos for 121 million in 2009 and that included hitman.

https://www.wsj.com/article...

So i don't know where this narrative that they sold it for a low price comes from. People are overestimating the value of Crystal Dynamics and the rest of the Eidos IP. 300 million was probably the best offer they got.

-Foxtrot615d ago

I just really hope this knocks their plan to merge the old classic Tomb Raider timeline to the new reboot, they wanted a unified timeline and I still can't see how they would do that unless it was in a horrible forced manner, they are two completely different universes.

Hopefully that was Square Enix's idea and they can move onto a new trilogy, maybe go back to the original timeline or softboot it. However that leaked story info about Lara looking after a group of new Tomb Raiders and feeling lonely was just awful.

1Victor616d ago

Nice congrats to them and good luck they’re going to need it

Fishy Fingers616d ago

They just were by the Embracer Group, thats why 'they' have control over the franchises.

PapaBop616d ago

I'm surprised Sony didn't buy them. Tomb Raider and Soul Reaver were two of the most iconic PS1 games back in the day.

neutralgamer1992616d ago

Papa

According to the rumors Sony had square enix sell their western developers

shinoff2183616d ago

Papbop tonb raider and soul reaver werent the two most iconic. They were well known especially tomb raider. Soul reaver wasnt as well known but i remember it being a good game. You could also pick it up at alot of places on the super cheap.

Loktai615d ago

@papa
Tonb raider was on saturn and pc not any kind of exclusive and legacy of kain was very playstation at the time but soul reaver was also on other stuff but yeah I get you I guess. Tomb raider was better on saturn if you compare launch hardware. The rev c graphics chip the psx got shortly after improved banding in textures and made tomb raider equal or better on playstation, but prior to that it was better on saturn, tiny tiny bit.

You better do something great with, the last iteration of Tomb Raider wasn't all that great.

ClayRules2012616d ago (Edited 616d ago )

I agree. While I enjoyed the first game, I didn’t much enjoy Rise or Shadow of the Tomb Raider much at all, and I was very excited for both games.

I hope they do some great and really improve on the writing and cast really likable characters (apart from Lara) in the story, her friend Jonah, I couldn’t stand him.

616d ago
zsquaresoff616d ago

Jonah was more of an annoyance than an ally.

ClayRules2012616d ago

@againx28
I’m glad you personally enjoyed Rise, and it was money well spent!

@zsquareoff
Yes, an annoyance, and just someone who I couldn’t careless if he’d been killed off, that was how much I disliked his presence in the games.

StarkR3ality616d ago

They were all really good games tbh...

ClayRules2012616d ago

I disagree. I’m glad you got your money’s worth and had a good time with the games still!

thesoftware730616d ago

Indeed, the gameplay and graphics were excellent.

The story was the weakest part, while still being good tho.

-Foxtrot615d ago

Good games

Shit Tomb Raider games

thesoftware730616d ago

I love all 3 Tomb Raider games. Each one was better than the last IMO.

I know people didn't like Shadow but it was fantastic.

ChasterMies616d ago

The last 2 iterations of Tomb Raider weren’t all that great.

BISHOP-BRASIL615d ago (Edited 615d ago )

I can't fault 'em, they were decent modern games, they weren't the best tomb raider games, but those were classics, nostalgia obviously plays a big role in how we rate 'em, in fact, I doubt a straight remake would fare any better, if not worst, than the modern trilogy. They were clunky platformers with some of the worst shooting to ever grace Playstation, the story only seemed better because of nostalgia too, it was all over the place, from wacky dinos to all serious spy shit.

*edited because my sausage fingers hate smartphones.

Sgt_Slaughter616d ago

Hopefully this means they have a bright future.

Since Embracer Group also opened up an entire division dedicated to game preservation, maybe we'll see Tomb Raider I, II. and III remastered or remade for the current generation

I'm really curious to see what he's going to do. It seems like a GTA-style game, but I wonder how it'll differentiate itself.

Goodguy015h ago(Edited 5h ago)

A new studio making a AAA game. Yea, that'll go well. I still think new studios should only make small games for a few years to build up teamwork and trust within.

shinoff21834h ago

That's a good point but if they have the talent it may not be needed

Mr_cheese2h ago

And the industry experience like this guy clearly does

anast2h ago

If it weren't one of the founder's of one of the most prolific open-world game studios, I would agree.

Hypercharge Unboxed Dev Saddened By Claims It'll Be 'Dead' Without Xbox Game Pass

One of the big Xbox releases heading our way in May 2024 is the long-awaited Hypercharge Unboxed, which is finally bringing its "first and third-person shooter action figure game" to Xbox consoles on Friday, May 31st.

Sadly, ahead of launch, the game's official Twitter (or "X") account has been highlighting the "trolls" who are claiming that because it's not launching on Game Pass, Hypercharge Unboxed is already set up for failure on Xbox.

It's horrible what people will say, but the truth might be harsh. There is a good chance it might not do well on Xbox if it's not on GamePass. There is a strong possibility that is the case. We'll see.

When it launches on Playstation in the future you can rest assured it will sell much better. The devs have confirmed it's coming to Playstation in the future.

"It is built in the Unreal Engine 4. The game was released on the Nintendo eShop on January 31, 2020 and on Steam on April 27, 2020. The development of Hypercharge: Unboxed for the Xbox platform was officially announced on July 16, 2022, with the developers also confirming future support for the PlayStation."

ZeekQuattro1d 8h ago

I remember having this on my radar years ago for the Switch but never pulled the trigger on it. Crazy it's still not on PlayStation yet.

northpaws23h ago

And that's the problem of GamePass.

JEECE23h ago

Unfortunately once people are conditioned to expect to get something as part of a subscription they already pay for, they are unlikely to buy it a la carte. Some games, including this one, now look like "Gamepass Games" to a huge chunk of the Xbox audience. Maybe this game will buck that trend, and I wish them luck, but I'd imagine they'll have a rough go trying to sell this game on Xbox.

shinoff218322h ago

Hopefully their game not selling on Xbox doesn't stop them from bringing it to ps. I can't imagine why a developer would go Xbox first if their not on gamepass. Good luck to them though.

JEECE22h ago

Yeah I can't figure that out either. I mean I understand why you go there first if you get a Gamepass payday, but if you are just trying to sell copies it doesn't make sense. Fewer users overall, and a smaller percentage of those users are willing to buy indie games a la carte.

Jingsing21h ago

Yeah, I can't understand it either unless there is some deep routed fan-boyism from the developer, which isn't very clever if you are trying to make a living. Fatshark is a perfect example of a developer sending their games to die on Xbox and they kept doing it.

Jingsing21h ago

British guy saying Xbox is his dream console doesn't really sit right does it. 5 generations of PlayStation in the UK and you haven't figured out what console is going to make you the most money. That is the mistake you've made.

JEECE11h ago

I wonder how old he is and when he got into gaming. For a certain segment of gamers, it can be difficult to overstate how influential the Xbox 360 was.

Jingsing7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Fair, but by the end part of the 360 it was a pretty much a damp squid and then they've had two terrible generations of consoles after the 360 and still sticking with Microsoft and calling it your dream console at this point is for the birds. His game launched on Switch first now Xbox. It seems he has some preference for all platforms before PlayStation regardless of financial outcome. That isn't to say they won't do a PlayStation release. Also the UK was pretty much instrumental in launching PlayStation from a software perspective.

Epic Games Faces $1.2 Million Fine Over "Unfair Practices," Plans to Fight Back

It might be cheaper to simply pay the fine. Fighting said fine could cost millions due to court and lawyer fees. Fortnite generates well over a 100 million in each month, so Epic has plenty of cash.

franwex1d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

But if they did pay it, then they are basically admitting that they did something they weren’t supposed to be doing. If they fight it, they may win and continue to have a sense of urgency for their micro transactions thus making more money long term.

Goodguy011d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Meaning more suits to follow from others if they don't fight as well.

Not a fan of Epic nor fortnite and their micro transactions. But the game is heavily supported and is free to play, all store items are completely cosmetic.

1d 6h ago
Furesis1d 3h ago

I'd fight back too. These are kinda meaningless reasons to fine someone like really for THAT. It's like they just wanted to make money or something.

Sephiroushin17h ago

There is a law for something, but even if its stupid follow it because if you break it you pay for it; if they knew they cant place a “buy now” in NL then just dont do it!
