Oblivion PS3 Downgraded. Xbox 360 upgraded? Wii errr... Never.

An article over at Joystiq.com suggest so

-- "When we learned that the PS3 version of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion would not feature the majority of downloadable content found on the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game, it was a blow to fans of horse armor everywhere. This weeks episode of The 1UP Show (02/02) provides the follow-up hook as Managing Editor Garnett Lee relays a juicy bit of info from Bethesda. As it turns out, it's due to a memory limitation with the Playstation 3 itself."

I want to hear the spin on this one please?

Maddens Raiders6286d ago

From the IGN interview with Oblivion VP of Marketing, Peter Hines 8/2/07:

--"In fact, the other reason why the downloadable content for the PS3 version of the game isn't included isn't solely because of the technical limitations of the system. Instead, it's because the designers haven't actually tested the PlayStation Network Store and the mechanisms for delivering content to systems. Considering that the development team has been spending a large amount of time making sure that the game transitions over to the PS3 well without the numerous bugs or glitches that plagued the PC and 360 versions of the game, working on the store was definitely a low priority on their list when it came to dedicating additional resources to that feature. But it is being worked on, and it will be coming at a later date."

--.."So what about the shaders or optimizations? Rumors were released stating that everything in the PS3 version of the game would migrate over to the 360 or the PC, which kicked off a screaming match on boards about which version was ultimately better. According to Hines, the shader functionality that would re-render the low-res textures would inevitably make its way to the 360 build and PC in future updates. However, certain optimizations that take advantage of the system's hardware will remain exclusive to the PS3 version of the game."

Now spin that. What else? =]

techie6287d ago

Apparently. It's all about learning how to use the memory. At the moment it's not as easy as all that.

TheMART6287d ago (Edited 6287d ago )

Hahaha how great is this AGAIN

Man we had to hear DJ, Jin, Juevani, , PS3fan and all those other PS fanboys crying about:

COD3
FNR3

all the version would be better looking when the PS3 arrived. I've seen multiple articles before they were released, hyping up the games and then they came out and...

The 360 version looked better always!

Once more, the Oblivion stuff... We already heard that the new shader, drawing distance etc. would be implemented by a downloadable patch for PC/360 and now... We learn that once more, the 360 hardware choice is more optimal for gaming.

Like a real gamer always had known already. So DJ what will be your twist story AGAIN?

"it just so happens that the new shader techniques applied to the PS3 will also be worked into the 360 version of the game. And thus, they are equals once more. "

OMG

" As it turns out, it's due to a memory limitation with the Playstation 3 itself.

Bethesda simply could not find a way to load every piece of downloadable content without affecting the performance of the game. Considering that the Xbox 360 can pull off this feat without a hitch, it looks like the $1 billion dollar gamble has paid off again for Microsoft."

If one has bought the PS3 I bet they're really are looking into selling that overhyped videoplayer and buy the real next gen system with premium online service, the 360

@ DJ (below)

you're getting really funny now. I just quoted Managing Editor Garnett Lee from Bethesda. Raist nor FX know better then him I guess, right?

It's just proven over and over again that you and those other brainwashed Sony fanboys always twist and lie.

I heard you also with Gears before it came out. "It'll never live up to the hype", "It will be a mediocore game in the end", "they won't make the graphics shown" blablabla

And then it came out, it hit about 9.5 average scores and what? You are all quiet. I bet when Oblivion comes out and looks worse then the 360 version you'll be quiet also. I am enjoying every moment when reality and the truth got you guys pwned big time

DJ6287d ago

I think it's time for you to retire from these BS posts. Must be hard dealing with all that denial everyday.

THAMMER16287d ago

We know you know all about denil. I mean just read your own post history. You an not really avaid me. So you should get a 360 so we can play Halo 3. I know you wan to. J/K LOLOLOLOLOLOL um no I'm for real.

Thugbot1876286d ago

Man this is funny we can look back at the post where they said it would have better graphics than the 360 and what you guys were saying. Then there was the whole PS3 is way better than the 360. Well what it looks like here is PS3 not living up to the hype once again.

MoonDust6287d ago

"Oblivion sucks anyways", "they are too lazy to unlock the real power of the PS3.", "this site is paid by MSFT.", "This doesn't prove anything".

Raist6287d ago

"The PS3 version of Oblivion isn't a simple port of the game either, although players who have picked up the 360 version will be very familiar with the control scheme. For one thing, the PS3 version has been optimized to take advantage of the Cell processor and hardware that the system offers. As a result, the game runs a lot faster than the 360 build. Entering dungeons or buildings results in a load of 3-5 seconds, compared to the 7-10 seconds or longer for the 360 version of the game. Similarly, the amount of framerate drops or hitches that cropped up in the wilderness as you accessed a new area on the 360 have been substantially reduced on the PS3 version. There is a plan to completely eradicate these issues as the game nears release, as well as fixing a number of bugs that were present in the other builds. Kiss the item duplication glitch goodbye.

The visual presentation of Oblivion has also been significantly enhanced. While it was a beautiful title on the 360, far off environmental details often displayed low resolution textures. This has been fixed with new shaders dedicated to rendering the foreground cleanly with sharper details, so rocky landscapes now have craggy appearances instead of smooth, non-distinct surfaces. While there is still a fair amount of pop-in that occurs (which can't be helped due to the size of the world), the draw distance is farther than the 360 version. As a result, screens from the PS3 version should approach those from high end PCs running Oblivion, which is an impressive feat."

The ps3 is more powerful and their to lazy to (here's the good part) fully utilize the power of the ps3 cell processor and RSX combo. LOL!!!!

It's underpowered for gaming, way underpowered!!! The truth is thrown, shoved even in there faces, on an almost daily basis but fools like this guy and so many others will continue to listen to songs played by a false DJ.

The ps3 isn't, and wasn't designed by sony or the trio team for gaming, but instead to fully utilize the cell to carry out multiple tasks at one time. (dont get excited now) Multiple small tasks such as spead sheets etc...but for gaming it's a hinderance and not a help. This "TRUTH" you keep hearing is said by those that would most profit so cut the MS ownes them BS, it does in the fact that the Xbox 360 is the gaming king and sony is a sinking ship, once thought to be a battle ship but was just a passenger ship all along.

You can love your ps3 and play some great games on it but it's not going to EVER be the king of gaming this time round due to it's limitations. Take it or leave it.

A $600 dollar system that cant display armor on a horse.

bluhefner6287d ago

How the hell is the PS3 underpowered when it can run the Havok 4.5 engine which is 5-10 faster then Havok 4.0 (which is the one Bungie is using for Halo 3). U make no sense.

MoonDust6287d ago

Show me where it says Bungie is using that engine.

bluhefner6287d ago

http://ps3.qj.net/Showing-o...

At the bottom of the article it states Havok 4.0 is being used for Halo 3 and Sonic series, its old.

http://ps3.qj.net/Havok-4-5...

And heres a link to where it says PS3 can run Havok 4.5.

The Snake6287d ago

Ok now for a link that says the 360 can't run Havok 4.5 please. Just because Halo uses an older version doesn't mean the platform can't handle the newer version.

JasonPC360PS3Wii6285d ago

“How the hell is the PS3 underpowered when it can run the Havok 4.5 engine which is 5-10 faster then Havok 4.0”

Just because the PS3 can run Havok 4.5 doesn’t mean it will play games right.
My computer will run Vista and DX10 but won’t play Crysis. Why? Because of some of the same hardware limitations TheMart had pointed out in comment #3.

“(which is the one Bungie is using for Halo 3). U make no sense.”

That makes no sense, Havok 4.5 is new they have been working on Halo 3 for about three years (there was no 4.5 then Jan. 23, 2007)

http://ps3.qj.net/Havok-4-5...
“And heres a link to where it says PS3 can run Havok 4.5”

What are you trying to say the 360 cant and the PS3 can or what?

“San Francisco, Calif., Jan. 23, 2007 – Havok announces today the official release of Havok 4.5, the latest update to its modular suite of artist tools and run-time technology. Fully optimized for Sony PLAYSTATION®3, as well as Microsoft Xbox360 and Nintendo Wii, Havok 4.5 dramatically accelerates the development of cross-platform, cutting edge electronic games, meeting the needs of the world’s top developers and producers.” http://www.havok.com/conten...

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot8d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator7d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin8d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai8d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis0077d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer7d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer7d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.
