5 RPGs in internal development at Sony

Shuhei Yoshida has admitted in an interview with Famitsu magazine that Sony has 5 RPGs in first party development. VGTilt has a rough translation of the interview on their website and quotes Yoshida as saying that Sony are "also working with 3rd party to ensure we have those kinds of games coming in from their studios as well."

This will provide welcome news for an RPG starved Playstation fan in Japan. With White Knight Chronicles, a third party development, kicking off on Christmas Day, could the RPG glut fans have waited for be arriving in 2009?

If they told us earlier, gamers would probably be putting too much pressure on these developers to release it faster. Quality takes time and patient. And those who lacks patient will complain and whine about how slow these developers are and taint their image. If the developers rush and put the game out faster, the quality is lower and gamers will whine. It's more of a lose/lose situation if the public knows too early.

Ever since FF13 was announced for the 360, I have immediately stated on these forums how Sony should immediately secure resources (both internally and externally) to develop Triple A rpgs for the PS3 platform because they can no longer trust Square "traitors" Enix...

so i'll be glad to see if Sony reached out to Konami and paid the cash to have them penny up a next gen exclusive Suikoden 6, I'm curious to see what are the 4-5 other 1st party RPGs that are in dev for the PS3. because it's been 2 years and the only rPGs that have hit the system is

Beyond the Beyond...hah, damn that game sucked so bad. I remember buying it because it was the first real RPG released on the ps1 (Arc the Lad came out around the same time, but only in Japan). The only thing that was cool about the game was the mini-dragon that followed you around and when I happened to stumble upon Merlin in a cave after reading a random book in some city (I think he taught you a revive spell or something). I remember really thinking the game might be good too, since I'm pretty sure it had some of the same artists from the Shining Force series.

Really, out of all the Sony owned titles though, Dark Cloud 3 is definitely at the top of my list. Dark Cloud 2 was my favorite ps2 RPG (maybe Persona 4 will change that, will find out in a couple of days), and I would most likely put it at least near one of my top 10 games of all time, or at least top 20. It's also the reason I have so much faith in Level5 in hopes that WKC will be great.

There is a rumor going around that Wild Arms,Legend of Dragoon 2,and Dark Cloud 3 are being created by internal studios at Sony.

Media Division did make the first Wild Arms for Sony on previous consoles.

Legend of Dragoon was developed internally by Sony Japan for the PS2 and I expect the same for part 2 from Sony Japan

Dark Cloud 3 is an old rumor but its credible.I have already read 3 different sources stating that it could come out after Level 5 finishes WKC.

It all makes sense because these are internally developed and they don't even have to ask a company like Square Enix or Atlus to do it.

Eternal Sonata is like one of the crappiest Jrpg that I have come to play in my life (my opinion) but Mass Effect is like the first and only Wrpg that I have come to really like.

I haven't liked a single Jrpg from this gen except for Tales of Vesperia and I never had faith in tri-ace. Since they started to make games in the super-famicon era they have only made like 3 good games; The first 2 Star Ocean(snes, ps1) and the first Valkyrie Profile(ps1)...

But Level-5 they have made Dragon Quest VIII (one of my favorite jrpg ever), Rogue Galaxy, both Dark Cloud games, Jeanne d'Arc. All of them recent and amazing games and that's why everybody's anticipating WKC so much.

But considering how is this site, no matter what game the PS3 had if Level-5 makes a jrpg exclusive for the X360 everybody's going to dissing them like they have been doing with S-E even though they are like the biggest, most powerful and respected company that makes and publishes Jrpg's right now.

Sorry for writing so much is just that I like to talk about Jrpgs. =)
My next jrpg when I get vacation in a couple of weeks more is going to be the Xenosaga trilogy. Most people have said to me that they aren't that good but they look pretty interesting to me and I like long cut-scenes anyway.

Seriously, you should buy a PS2 because the best Jrpg are there. You can play most of the games from the FF series, Shadow Hearts, Dragon Quest, Grandia because all these new RPG's... They don't even give the taste of what a great Jrpg is. =\

You have great incentive to bring in third party support by offering a competing product on your platform. Microsoft's relationship with Mistwalker is a good example of this. If Mistwalker became Microsoft's Square/Enix, that would be lost sales for Square since they would have more competition if they decided to support the platform later. The same can be said of Saints Row. If you are the developer of Grand Theft Auto, you don't want to see competition built up anywhere.

This relationship can take an entirely different direction if a platform starts creating more first party software that is in direct competition with a desired third party developer. By bringing in more first party RPG's this could give incentive to a developer like Square to push multi-platform even harder since they have less potential sales on a given platform.

This is a delicate balance a console maker that develops first party games has to maintain. There are ways to over come this like limiting the amount of competing games you create and launching in windows that are less threatening. You can even offer to publish third party games or reduce costs through lower royalties or increased development support. The one thing you don't want to do is kick them in the jimmy and tell them you don't need them. Variety is very important in console gaming.

I think it might be the other way around. After seeing what Square is doing, Sony decides it's time to do something about it. Rather than compete with Microsoft in throwing money to Square, Sony made a smarter decision to go with more first/second parties games. This way, there are stronger tie to Sony and better quality.
If you want something done right, you do it yourself.
Especially looking at recent Square Enix performance, it's all remakes and mediocore games.

Square has been hard at work making the next Final Fantasy. Square is also much bigger than most people give them credit for. The ports hitting DS and PSP are being handled by smaller teams that aren't directly working on the next Final Fantasy. The money generated from sales of these games is what keeps Square going while they work on FF. Of the title that have hit the Xbox 360, one was made by Tri-Ace and published by Square and the other was made by a small team using a game engine from another developer. This was done to reduce cost and get a game to retail so Square can bring in much needed revenue. Both games were very good, but not signature Square since they weren't exactly made by Square in the traditional sense.

The sky is not falling like many PS3 fans make it sound like. Square/Enix is growing to become a much healthier global entity.

While Infinite Undiscovery was published by SE, they publish all tri-Ace games. Last Remnant was made by SE and it should have been good.

Only a few games on the DS are made(some co-made) by other companies. Square had some hands on those projects,and the others are made by them and not some knock B Team.

I know they sell well on ps3 and help it out a lot, but god I'm so sick of the turn-based combat. Make a WRPG like Mass Effect or Oblivion. Or even that awesome last-gen console RPG back in the day Baulders Gate or Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance those are the kinds of RPGS that are really awesome. Whats the fun in standing in one place the whole game button mashing the attack or magic button and waiting for the person to do the attack, then waiting for the enemy to attack you. IMO that's boring as hell. Ah well to each his own.

It's not all about standing in one place and mashing button. Besides, it's all personal preference. I personally do not like western RPG. They are usually create a character, run around doing side quest, and a very dull story.

For the record, I'm having a VERY hard time finding anything about the monthly Famitsu magazine at ALL. All I can find are their platform-specific magazines and their weekly one. Can't find any info about ANY monthly issue. Not sure what's going on here. Is the weekly one THE Famitsu magazine, or is there supposed to be a monthly one that I'm not finding here?

Either way, it's going to be rather hard for anyone to confirm this unless someone can actually find where you can find info on the monthly version (if there is one. Don't know how Famitsu publishes the mag and their site, even translated, is a friggin pain to get through).

Well According to Gamesblow, we should be seeing Wild Arms, Dark Cloud 3 and Legend of Dragoon 2 on the Horizon. Gamesblow supposedly has proof that Legend of Dragoon 2 is in Development.

The only place that ever has information and/or pics of legend of dragoon 2, tears of blood, or dark cloud 3 is this Gamesblow website, which again, NOBODY seems to have seen.

Gamesblow is not opening his site now. He just moved on up in Rank at Sony. anything that he leaks, can get him into trouble. Besides, he has been very spot on with his predictions, such as Tekken 5 going multiplatform and all, Not to mention the Revealing of Motorstorm 2 and Resistance 2 back in Janurary before Sony actually revealed it.

BTW according to Siligon, he has seen pictures of Tears For Blood (its not called Tears of Blood BTW.) and Legend of Dragoon 2. He stated that they were mindblowing.

True, anyone can make false claims since this is the internet and all. But I would not cast rumors from Gamesblow aside. ever since this guy appeared on N4G and stated these claims, which we didn't believed him at first, they usually came to fruition a few months later. He has been at least %90 correct so far. Hes probably the only source on the internet that I can listen to since all of his predictions were spot on. His credibility is off the charts. working on titles for the PS3. what did you THINK they were working on?

seriously, people want Sony to announce EVERYTHING they have on the table at one moment, but then they'd just turn around and complain when the game didn't release 6 months after that initial announcement.

quality takes TIME to produce.

people got SO excited when Microsoft announced, then released, RPG after RPG, after RPG, but just about ALL of those RPGs have been, honestly, mediocre.

i have no doubt that games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Infinite Undiscovery, and even The Last Remnant, would have been much better games given an additional 6-12 months of dev time.

look at Killzone 2. it was looking AMAZING when they finally revealed it in gameplay form at E3 2007. if it was released last holiday season, or even Feb of this year, a lot of Playstation 3 owners would have been happy, sure, but the game wouldn't be what it is NOW. as hard as it is to believe, looking BETTER than when they showed it last year, and PLAYING better as well (thanks to that beta, no doubt).

a LOT of Sony's devs have yet to show off what they're working on.

i'm sure some of them are working on RPGs. if anything, Level 5 is working on White Knight Story, Dark Cloud 3, and Rogue Galaxy 2. that's 3 RPGs from possibly the BEST RPG house in the industry, ALL exclusive to the PS3.

if Sony's other studios resurrect Legend of Dragoon, Legend of Legaia, Alundra, Okagi, and a few more, it would be simply icing on the cake.

the games are certainly coming, but some people need to simply be patient. as if we'd be able to buy ALL of the awesome titles coming out if they released at once. just LOOK at what happened THIS holiday season, when a slew of awesome games hit. i STILL haven't picked up everything on my list, sadly.

5 RPG's? Damn, I like the sound of that. I liked Eternal Sonata, and even Enchanted Arms (not great, but not horrible either). The PS3 is missing a truly great J-RPG. It already has two great PC-style RPG's (Oblivion, Fallout 3), but sometimes I just want some random battles and over the top dramatics.

I didn't really like Folklore, which I found pretty surprising, considering I'm a huge fan of horror movies/games and that one seemed like it would be up my alley.

A new Wild Arms would be awesome. The 1st one is one of my favorite games and I loved the 3rd one, one of my favorite J-RPG's ever.

Oblivion was not boring either...Had many many gameplay hours as does fallout 3. I'm just saying along those kinds of RPGS there should be more. JRPGS are f!cking slow as hell button mashing the attack button or the defense button or magic etc...then having to wait for the enemy to do the same thing to you. THAT is boring. Real time combat is more fun as well as more realistic. JRPGS are a waste of time IMO. I really don't know why they sell well at all, but seeing as they're all from japan I can imagine why they do sell as much as they do. Japanese are a strange people, no offense.
