Microsoft finally addresses Red Ring of Death with Jasper-based Xbox 360 consoles

From the source: The long-awaited Jasper-based versions of the Xbox 360 have finally emerged on the market. These new consoles have a redesigned motherboard with the new 65-nanometer version of the ATI (now AMD) graphics chip that doesn't run as hot as previous versions. There are other changes that improve the reliability and usability of the system as well.

I'm beginning to think that's why certain games are selling equally or better on the PS3 - a fair amount of current 360 owners buy 2-3 consoles due to thinking "but the newer models are better". Obviously there's no way to prove it but I just have a feeling of the 23-24 million 360's, there are 3-5 million purchased out of spite or frustration of repeated RROD's. Watch as the software attach rate moves slower than the hardware sales; this will further prove this theory floating around in the console debates.

I am a end user who traded-in and purchased a second 360 due to reliability issues. I'm a multi-platform owner and wanted to continue to be able to play 360 exclusives. Due to the reliability issues I lean towards purchasing multi-plats on the PS3 unless I read of serious differences. Minor differences do not bug me.

It is very frustrating that I had to purchase twice, but I am a gamer and enjoy playing the 360 along with my other consoles.

The Falcon did not eliminate RROD.
All you have to do is check my history and see that a couple months back my Elite with a Falcon motherboard RROD'd on me. All the Falcon did was decrease the chances of RROD and not eliminate them. Hopefully the Jasper will eliminate the issue completely but only time will tell.

This price cut helped boost sales but it still looks like they'll be 3rd for 2008's sales, and I'm not seeing anything on the horizon for 2009 as a 360 owner that's getting me excited. Halo wars and that expansion pack? I'll pass. Maybe if Alan Wake comes out in 2009 I'll have something to look forward to. I'm patient though. I waited a year between Halo and Fable 2 and Gears 2. I'm not sure why people thought Falcon 360's took care of the issue of RRoD. I have a Falcon 360 that works, I know someone who got the RRoD on a Falcon unit. It's an airflow issue as much as the actual board, so an internal redesign is required as much as cooler chips.

My Falcon Elite has lasted longer than all my other 360s combined, so the hardware revisions seem to be working so far.

The number of 360s I've seen returned to my store for warranty exchanges has dropped quite a bit, though the rate is still a little higher than normal.

Maybe--MAYBE--Jasper will fix it.

For all you disillusional people who thing RRoD is already gone, youre wrong. If that were true, why would they even need a Jasper? I was talking to my EB manager on Thurday and he said 7 new Xboxs got returned with RRoD. He had to take them back, not referr them to M$ because it was still within the one month from sale period. 7 is alot for one week in a town of 100K people. RRoD is still very real. We just dont here about it much here because it upset certain people to have those stories posted.

Naturally I had to ask about PS3 and Wii returns. He had never got a Wii returned broken and he said 2 for PS3. "For the week"? I asked genuinly surprised it was so much. No he said. 2 for the 18 months I've worked here.

Also this is just a review not an offial MS statement. The fact MS hasnt said this new version will, without a doubt, stop RROD means it will still happen just less often.

THESE are the 360's that should have come out at launch! Xbox fans get mad when RROD is brought up by SONY fans...and this is why. If MS would have launch a great working machine, with QUALITY parts, the amount of price drops on units would have be just as low as the ps3. (To make a good enough profit for share holders)

The only time I will believe the RROD problem is gone is when Xbox 360 start lasting longer than 2 - 3 years. I got an Xbox 360 2 months ago and it uses 175watts. It does run cooler and with the NXE it runs a whole lot quieter. But they cant say M$ address the RROD with this new chipset. Nobody can be too dure if the RROD problem will be totally solved with this smaller die chip. Its early days for this new chip. Time will tell.

And haven't had a single issue. And thanks to OPTIONAL game installs, it now runs quieter and cooler than ever. The Jasper is great and all, but the problem was fixed last year with the Falcan.

3 years & the 3rd solution for a simple problem, Microsoft has probably had 5+ million 360 returned because of the RRoD and its taken this long to find the problem with nearly 200k employees. so i ask now, 3 years & 3 fixes later, is this the last fix.

Well i doubt it, i really do, my brother has had 2 RRoD and Microsoft would not fix them even though both was still in the warranty time frame and loads of reports in japan of the RRoD being a major issues in the last few months. i hope it has fixed the problem but again i doubt.
