Spider-Man PS5 Debacle Shows Sony Is Out of Touch

You know you’ve done goofed when you’d get a better response by not doing anything at all. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, the PlayStation 5 re-release of 2018’s open world smash hit, has been handled atrociously by Sony – and it’s emblematic of a disastrous week for the Japanese giant, that’s seen it scramble from one communication mishap to another.

Sony isn't out of touch. What I'm getting from it is that the remaster is more than just higher resolution, they improved the lighting, probably included raytracing and other improvements

I'm getting Miles Morales anyway so I'll gladly pay for the ultimate edition

marcodias1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

its much more than just that, while other games that give a free upgrade give you 4k 60 fps, ray tracing and less loading, spider-man offers much much more, even skin, eyes and hair get better, the upgrades are very noticeable and took much more time to make.
people are here like they dont let you play the game you bought back in 2018 on ps5, you can, its just it wont have all these updates that took weeks to make (much more time than simple resolution and fps bumps), yet people think themselves entitled to get it for free or sony bad.

The Witcher 3 wants to say hello.

All of that Spiderman has will we get for free and that even implies for Cyberpunk 2077 later on. We will get the "better" version at lunch and the more improved next-gen later on.

sampsonon1336d ago

@AnnaDea: "The Witcher 3 wants to say hello."

The most overrated game ever made. What about it? You mean they finally made it look like a current gen game? That should be free. We are talking about Spider-Man.

WillyC0091336d ago

@sampsonon

Seems like you haven’t played the Witcher 3 since you made that ridiculous claim. It still looks great even for a 2015 title. The blood & wine expansion looks even better then the base game as well.

I'm surprised of the huge amount of negative press Sony is getting even from Playstation dedicated websites. I truly believe Jim Ryan should be fired for the best.

You will have to do penance for the rest of the year for saying that.

RaidenBlack1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

@sampsonon
Witcher 3 is overrated?
"We are talking about Spider-Man"
Nah, bruv.
Spider-Man upgrade should not be locked behind Ultimate Edition.
Same thing Activsion did for CoD 4 Remaster. The resultant negativity forced them to release it separately.
And it's 2020, They could've pushed for a free upgrade. 505 Games was criticized for this.
And we haven't seen neither Control's nor Spider-Man's upgraded versions.

morganfell1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

In addition Spider-Man came out 2 years ago and the design was locked at least 3 years ago. This isn’t some game that was being made while the team had PS5 dev kits laying around.

If this was simply faster frames and some ray tracing and was given away for free then sites like pushsquare would be screaming they should’ve done something more with the game.

Pushsquare...wants high speed low drag next gen tech...doesn’t want to pay for it.

Say hello back to the Witcher 3 for me. And tell the Witcher when he is balancing a billion dollar company with multiple dev teams, 3rd party developers, two online services across multiple consoles, and a hardware business in a launch year no less then I will high five him and Dandelion both.

shabz6661336d ago

@morganfell

Out of curiosity, according to you, Is 505 justified for the paid control ultimate edition upgrade as well?

morganfell1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

@shabz666,

Yes and no. The issue lies in two simple areas. What is the degree of improvement for Control? Is it just frames and ray tracing? I do not know so I am asking. I did not play the game nor do I own it.

My real issue with 505 is their claimed reasoning behind charging for the upgrade. Its not that there is a cost but rather their posted justification. Had they just said, "The upgrade will cost X amount of dollars" then that would have been the end of that part of the controversy. Instead they offered a technical reason that was blown out of the water as soon as they posted it. Frankly, they just lied about it. That's my issue. If the upgrade is minimal work then that would add to my disagreement with the charge as well.

Addendum. From what I had read the upgrades were minimal work. Taking that as accurate combined with unscrupulous behavior is reason enough for me to disagree.

Petebloodyonion1336d ago

@Marcodias
Have you seen the remaster in action to make these claims?
Because it seem that nobody did except you and that are the meat and potatoes of the article.

shabz6661336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

@morganfell,

Well essentially that is what 505 have said, The statement they put out basically boiled down to time and money constraints, they wouldn’t have been able to recoup time spent for said upgrades they made, they could not find a viable path for free upgrades for everyone based on their updates to next gen, however they haven’t detailed the types of improvements they have done. Assumption is ofc the same improved frame rates, maybe ray tracing and faster loads?

Insomniac has tweeted to have improved draw distance, traffic pedestrian density, better skin shaders ambient shadows and animations. performance upgrade haptic feedback from dual sense etc etc.

Between the 2 strategies what is common is that insomniac, like 505, have not showed any of these upgrades running, not shown what are the said visual differences between the old and the new but both have put out their price plan and preorders up online.

So I pose the question to you, are these 2 companies justified in this approach? Are they not similar? Insomniac could have just put a trailer out for the remaster to justify that $20 price. Could have saved themselves a lot of trouble. I suspect the upgrade is probably not even complete yet or the upgrade isn’t as shiny as a $20 bill. Sony is leveraging a lot of good will with this move.

Also you should play control. It’s really good. It’s the right amount of weird and frantic fun. Controls are a bit floaty though.

morganfell1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

I will respectfully disagree. 505 stated that a technical limitation was the reason that owners could not get the upgrade. They completely ignored how Microsoft does backwards compatibility for 360 titles via disc verification or record of digital ownership tied to an account.

No I do not think what the two publishers have chosen is justified for the same reason. And as I have stated countless times I do not have an issue paying for work. I am not an opponent of the price increase for games either. But as I remarked above the reasoning by 505 was more than questionable by my interpretation. Everyone sees this issue differently so you and I will simply have to agree to disagree.

Petebloodyonion1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

@Morganfell
Have you seen Spider-man or Control in action to mentioned the difference?
Heck did Remedy explained the benefits of the Ultimate edition aside Raytracing?

Now for me they are both dick moves because both of them lock the upgrade behind a paywall of a full game to have access to that upgrade instead of just charging that upgrade fee (that frankly would be free on PC).

And as for your Witcher3 comment well yes Witcher 3 and GOG Galaxy says hello.
Gog may not be Steams or Epic on Pc but its a notable Storefront knows for consumer friendly practices (making sure that games has no DRM and were the 1st to offer money back on digital sales).

And guess who are the owners?

morganfell1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

I do not have to guess who are the owners I have a gog account. Being a publisher on a store isn’t the same thing as being responsible in a company sense for your own development teams. Thanks for ignoring the other points I raised. Yes I read what 505 said. It doesn’t excuse their remarks. It’s this simple. I am not going to agree with you that the situation between 505, the Witcher and Sony are similar. End of story. I just do not see it that way, period. When gog launches their console I may order one.

James Stevenson, Insomniac developer on Resetera :

https://www.resetera.com/th...

"Just to be clear too - this is far more than an increase in resolution/framerate and tagging surfaces for ray-tracing. We have put a significant amount of work and effort into the Remaster. From my blog on the matter:

"The remaster for the PS5 is no simple up-res, as many of the game’s art assets have been completely updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. You’ll see better-looking characters with improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation (including our new, next-generation Peter Parker). You’ll also see ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching further into the distance, and the same optional performance mode offered on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, allowing you to finally play the game at a targeted 60fps frame rate. We’ll be supporting near-instant loading, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Lastly we’re adding three amazing new Spider-Man suits, new photo mode features, and even new trophies for those of you looking to Platinum the game all over again."

It's not just ordinary backward compatibility remaster like Gears 5 with upgraded resolution fps and added ray tracing because horsepower of XSX can provide that obviously and automatically ( well, FH3 on XSX is just 4k/30 ). Does Gears 5 will has a new achievements trophies, more enemies on screen, more vehicles on XSX? Nope.

It's one thing to offer an update of a newly released game, that people would just wait to buy for next gen if they don't offer the free upgrade upfront and another it's a REMASTER of an already released game.

70$ it's the same price as what the new Nba2k will cost, for 70$ we are getting BOTH Spiderman Miles Morales AND the Original Spiderman REMASTERED with ALL of the DLC, that's crazy value for me.

FanboySpotter1336d ago

It's called remaster like spiderman ps4 came out 10 years ago when it could've just gotten a free ps5 version update. We got many remasters because most games were from a different architecture.. no excuse for this one it's been the same x86 architecture an update is all it could've had.

crazyCoconuts1336d ago

@fanboy I don't even know how you rationalize your x86 comment. If that's all you think a remaster is then why complain? You'll be able to play your x86 PS4 Spiderman game on your x86 PS5 without paying a cent extra. Happy now?

fr0sty1336d ago

It's amazing how entitled people feel these days. I used to pay $70 for a Genesis cartridge I could have programmed and created the artwork and music by myself in a matter of months these days.

FanboySpotter1336d ago

@crazycoconuts why is cyberpunk most other games free upgrade and not spiderman then? 🤔 let's see what you got for it

badz1491336d ago

@FanboySpotter

where did Sony say in your 2018 purchase of Spider-man that every single buyer will be entitled for a free PS5 upgrade? I get it that getting free stuff is great and all but it comes down to business. and now you're bringing up Cyberpunk but totally forgetting that it hasn't come out yet. sure they also announced Witcher 3 free next gen upgrades but I think it's all thanks to the PC version of that game, the "next-gen" version for it was already "done" all along. it's more about cranking up the settings and release it as next-gen. Spider-man has no such version as the Pro version is that game at its best. thus it's called a REMASTER.

it's incredibly easy to troll Sony in this matter but their games were not released on PC for them to easily port a higher setting ports as next-gen version. Horizon ZD has that privilege now and there's no announcement for that yet. Maybe they will offer a free upgrade when the sequel comes later, who knows.

The least they could've done is charge a small upgrade fee for those who already bought the game with all DLC. There are several other games that will include the same enhancements but offer free upgrades. Gears 5, Witcher 3, Cyberpunk and I could be missing more. Why is this different?

TheScotsman1336d ago

Only M$ is out of touch, I've pre ordered a series X but am yet to know what if any games I'll be playing as I've seen nothing on it bar a gears 5 patch shown months ago.
7,5 billion on games companies and still NO Fecking Games. And here we are complaining about paying for a PS5 game that we've actually seen on action? Hello

JackBNimble1336d ago

For one this is about sony not MS, and secondly, if you're so upset about the series x and next gen games, then why are you buying day one?

NeoGamer2321336d ago

Sony is a company just like any other. Companies are driven by stock prices and stock prices are driven by making money. All Sony is doing here is taking advantage of their user loyalty to make money. As gamers we need to watch and call them out on what they do. No matter which company it is.

Insomniac stated:
"Many art assets have been updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. Better-looking characters w/ improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation Ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching into distance"

These changes are not rocket science. Modern development tools for art can do this stuff really quickly. There is no need to charge gamers as if it is a new game. In fact the art assets may have been created earlier and then downgraded when they first started to run the game because they were too complex for PS4. Ray Tracing is more or less a switch. This was proven in Gears 5 and Minecraft demos on ray tracing where they said, it was simple and did not take the teams long at all. Lighting changes are simply someone moving where the light source for the scene is and playing with sliders. Drawing more in a distance is just telling the engine to put more, farther out there.

If they would've said stuff like tightened the controls, improved the controls, added an extra level of difficulty, enclosed a lot of DLC, or even said they improved errors in the game engine they would've had my vote for a bargain bin buy. All they are doing here is taking advantage of loyal fans that will buy it no matter how little the change is.

CS71336d ago

Please stop with the stupid fanboyism. All I have ever owned is Playstation consoles and even I can see Sony is really arrogant heading into this gen.

You defending them is only going to make them worse.

MANY other games have announced free upgrades. CDPR, MS, and manyyy other developers announced upgrade paths.

I don’t care to play spiderman again but you gotta admit Sony is no longer operating like a pro-consumer market leader.

Yes game devs need to be paid... But how is it that Sony aligns themselves with the most sleezy upgrade path with practices similar to Activision rather than CDPR?

And its not only the updates:
- Lying about “believing in generations” then doing what xbox did
- Lying about announcing preorders “long” before they begin. Then announcing it via a tweet and consoles sell out without the same day as the tweet.

Just admit Sony is starting this gen terribly from a communication to fans standpoint. Holding them accountable would only mean better stuff for YOU.

King_Noctis1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago )

@Sampson

I completely disagree with TW3 being the most overrated game ever made. I knew nothing about the series going into the game, and yet, the TW3 held its own and is one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had not just this generation but of all time. Of course, all just my opinion, and I could list so many different reasons why I loved it, but at the end of the day, based on how you reacted with how it’s the most overrated game ever made, I’d probably be wasting my time. And for a game that came out in 2015, it still looks darn beautiful and great overall today.

Anyways, I look forward to Spider-Man:MM/along with the Remastered 2018 Spider-Man game on PS5.

GottaBjimmyb1336d ago

I will say, I think it is a bit funny to see the responses here compared to, let's say, control where many of the same people were talking about how it was terrible then, not saying "but they put time into this, of course they have to charge."

@gotta you've got a better memory than me - i can't keep tabs on different people's individual positions on all of this stuff lol

Extermin8or3_1336d ago

@gottabjimmyb the issue with control is completely different it is just an upres and higher frame rate and some ray tracing (basically pc ultra settings from what I understand). Their reasoning behind why they couldn't just patch the current version or at least allow people who have main game and both dlcs upgrade is BS .

I think the part that some are missing is that they can still play the PS4 spiderman on the PS5 if they already purchased it; yes it will be smooth out and some functions will work better but it won't be the enhanced edition. The enhanced edition, from what I hear is close to a complete remake of the game. Maybe I am missing something.

To me I look at it like this, how many times do we see Movie companies and such release a newer version of an old movie, enhanced, and its either in the Movie theater, physical media or even digital now and they are sold at the current market price of current medias. Is that Anti Consumer as well?

The problem isn't about working for free or charging for an upgrade the problem lies on 2 fronts.

1) Why lock the upgrade behind the paywall of a complete different game?
Heck Sony even acknowledge that if you buy Miles Morales on Ps4, you can buy the remaster upgrade for a 20$ So why owner of the current game (with DLC) can't have that option?

2) What message does it send to Loyalist who bought the game day 1, at premium price and made Spiderman a successful game? Next time don't buy our game and wait until we sell you the complete edition with bell and whistles?

The Death Of Arkham Has Me Worried About Spider-Man

Saad from eXputer: "After the rise of Rocksteady and its fall with post-Suicide Squad, I'm worried about Marvel's Spider-Man suffering a similar fate."

Hofstaderman48d ago

Why? According to the well publicized Insomniac leaks they have a slew of plans for Spiderman including its sequel.

CrimsonWing6948d ago

The sequel has had rumors that it could be sold piecemeal style or might be GaaS.

https://youtu.be/XCFr3KRB9G...

This is all coming from the leaks you mentioned. The problem is the industry is not doing well no matter how ill-informed people spin it on here when they see “sold 3 mill.” In those Sony leaks it showed the struggle to get ROI and they spend an insane amount of money to develop, which makes 0 sense to me when there’s not much to show for the increased development costs. Case in point would be Suicide Squad vs Arkham Knight.

I believe we’re in the middle of seeing a drastic change in media and distribution. This goes for movies, but more so for games and the industry is scrambling to figure out how to get more money out of consumers rather than stick to the “buy it once” to play it all.

https://www.gamesindustry.b...

https://www.theverge.com/20...

These are things you need to pay attention to in order to know which direction the wind’s blowing with this sh*t storm. I was almost certain the GaaS initiative was killed when Jim was leaving, but now seeing the success of Helldivers 2… I’m thinking we’re in for a bumpy ride. I just don’t know what that looks like yet, but I don’t think it’s gonna be pretty.

anast47d ago (Edited 47d ago )

Insomniac still has a good generation left in them before they get cannibalized by investors. It'll probably happen around the mid PS6 gen, when we see the beginning of the fall.

Huh with this article? If Sony and Insomniac want to abandoned the Spider-Man franchise and make a half baked, live service Spider-Man game, and miss the mark with their fans, then God bless’em!!!!

Seems unlikely when they abandoned the GaaS spiderverse game but are still going ahead with single player games like Wolverine and Spider-Man 3.
