That's not a question at all. It's not as powerful as Series X.

Series S has a lower performance RDNA 2 GPU that supports the Direct X12 Ultimate feature-set. Power wise the GPU is roughly on par with the Xbox One X GPU (Series S RDNA 2 GPU is a more efficient GPU that supports updated Direct X 12U features).

The Series S is paired with a far more capable CPU than Xbox One X's AMD Jaguar CPU.

The end result is a machine that's optimised for 1080p gaming and will deliver 60 FPS in games that would be CPU limited on Xbox One X.

The price and form factor should tell you straight away that Series S is not just a Series X missing the UHD drive.

@jukins, the SS will be able to do 4k for all existing games that support it (that run at 4k on the One X) and it will be able to do some 4k next gen games (prob ones the SX can do at 8k) but it looks like the SS is targeting 1440 for next gen games while the SX goes for 4k+.

You have to take into account that more money is made on each game sold. Every penny on games goes through the PS store rather than retailers. So a higher costing console subsidized by larger margins on games. I imagine that was a factor in Series S price as well.

XBOX has leaked the prices of both consoles to the journalists saying (300 & 500), then they officially confirmed the price of series S only. My guess that they are trying to make Sony believe that the leaked price (500) for the X is true, thus make Sony announce the price already (500).

If that's the case, then MS needs to get it's head out of its ass and start making decisions based on their own efforts and goals, instead of trying to undercut the competition. Why would anyone want a console where the people leading it are on a race to the bottom? That's what Wal-Mart and Amazon have been doing for years, which is what other competition started doing, and now, you get store brand crap cheap, while the regular stuff still costs just as much.

Yes, businesses have to be concious of their competition and the market. But setting out to beat the competition because you believe price is where you'll win in the market means that their goal is to win, but don't make the effort to offer the product which allows them to do it.

I'm personally fine if the consoles are cheaper from any company. But, I'd rather they build their tech with a price point in mind, instead of reacting to a market months before release.

Also, blue-ray drives sold for 25$ only, so most probably the price difference will be most 50 between both versions and make up the loss with digital purchases in the future.

I don't have kids, but have enough family, and was a kid once, to know that when I wanted something that expensive, I was pretty explicit about what it was I wanted. To the point I would mention variations or things I didn't want, just to make sure that they knew. Of course, I usually didn't get them, but that's another matter. Most of the kids I've seen interacting with their parents around christmas time are no different.

Oh, and most parents today that would be buying a console for "little timmy" also grew up with games enough to know what to look for when their kids say they want something. They just check their amazon wish list.

There are a lot of stupid, or at least uninformed people out there yes, but they don't make up enough of the market to really make a difference in the overall sales. Plus, the notion that this would happen is predicated on the Xbox being the big thing this holiday season. Something that didn't work for MS on the launch of the X1, despite their best efforts to pay to make it so everyone said it was the big thing for that holiday season.

The PS4 slim and one s sell more than the pro and the X and they are both 1080p consoles.

What Microsoft need to do now is come out and prove it runs at a lower Rez / frame rate to show people the difference.

Based on 4tb seeming not enough for this gen according to some people when referencing the ps4p, I question why it's acceptable for next gen. There are architecture changes and other things which will allow it to perform better than the ps4p at the same GPU flop rating, but there comes a point where mandated support will hold back games. It's really no different from supporting this gen hardware, it may just push the scale of what's held back some, for a bit longer.

Just seems like a stop gap measure, and I'm not a fan of these new generations seeing multiple iterations of compatible hardware, whether its mid gen upgrades, or what's going on with the series S

If it really is 4TF I'd wonder how it can provide such a next gen experience considering how much more the other options offer. The price is nice, but what are they sacrificing? They claim ray tracing, 4K and 120fps like the Series X and PS5, but offers a lot less power to do so.

It may support raytracing, but I wouldn't expect anything miraculous with it. It's not like those TF ratings don't include the parts of the system that handle the raytracing, and RT is a flop intensive process on any architecture. Some people are talking about it supporting RT as if it's some sort of co-processor independent of the rest of the GPU. It's not. It's part of the core processing architecture which can be assinged to do other things if it isn't doing RT. At 4TF, I can't imagine many devs are going to implement heavy RT routines while sacraficing more important GPU compute functions which will be needed if they want to maintain some sort of content parity on a system 1/3 the power, or less than 1/2 the competitions benchmark standards.

Best analogy I can think of is some older PC GPU's. When Anti-Aliasing first came around, all these cards were saying they supported it. Technically they did. It doesn't mean that all those cards supported it well, or it was practical to use at a point which made a difference.

Xbox Series S have the same features like machine learning and ray tracing acceleration, mesh shadings, VRS, but less GPU CUs, RAM and SSD space. Those are things that scales with texture sizes and resolution. We will see how good they scale, but it's totally possible to have a console that works well for the same games if they have the same architeture. The differences between Xbox One S and Xbox One X worse to work.

It'll work like the mid-gens do now. Game will be built with each system in mind, and each system will play a build of the game for that system. Only difference is, since it's releasing at the start of the gen, it won't need a compatibility mode for the weaker versions on the more powerful hardware, although for some games, that may work fine and be more beneficial for the developer with more limited resources.

399 would be the lowest practical number I'd expect, and that would be for the all digital version if I had to guess.

But, I think if Sony did $399 for the regular version, $349 for the digital, or maybe even $299 for digital, it would probably kill any chance MS may be able to scrounge up after what I'm considering a pretty rocky lead up to their next gen.

I like less what MS had to offer with the X1 at the lead up to last gen, but before all the DRM stuff, they were doing much better with the hype machine. Now they seem to be all over the place, and going to hard at singular messages which they keep changing, and now diversifying their products with stupid naming conventions. It's like MS just threw focus testing out the window, or decided to get the hipster crowd in to ask what sounded best.

Would probably help if they actually told us what this whole series crap was supposed to mean. At least then it would have some context. The Xbox One was probably the stupidest name they could have done for this gen, but at least it had context to what they were trying to deliver with the console.

Honestly, I don't know who is buying this, Xbox basically sells to its established fans (for the most part), they are going full fat on their next Xbox console, they ain't buying this weaker console.

There are some major differences, the Switch isn't going to give people a chance to subscribe to a huge pool of games. Also, a Switch bundle isn't cheap, and at most it will come with 3 games. The Switch is clearly becoming outdated at this point too, a lot of third party games aren't getting released on it anymore, and Nintendo's own releases have completely dried up.

I'm not saying I would buy an Xbox Series S, there is pretty much zero reason for me to own one when I am playing games on pc, but it's a hugely favourable option for parents at Christmas.

I'm not on a budget.

But, this is an attractive price for any situation where you are playing on a TV that is less than 40". For me, I have a portable LED and case. Would work perfect in that situation. Also, have a secondary property with a smaller TV in a small living room. Again, good fit.

This price is really good as well. If it was $399 or higher I would say it is a waste but at this price, it is attractive. Really good secondary console option.

Pricing will be important.... If the digital is a lot cheaper then the disc version then they won't be able to sell a lot of disc versions as a lot of people will abandon disc for anything over $75 difference. Sony took the safe path and just removed the drive and will sell it for the typical $50 cheaper probably.

Do not care what the specs are, even if that it's nearly third the Teraflops of the series X, as long as they are better than previous gen which they are, at that price you just can not complain. Remember it's an all digital and your not going for power. Your basically buying a replacement machine that is much better than previous gen at a fraction of the cost, with the mindset that your games are all discless and files are on the ssd card and that it will do everything but play blue ray.

The Series S is a weaker Series X, the PS5 digital is a PS5 without a disc drive. I would say the PS5 digital will be at the most £50-100 less than the PS5 (After all the disc drive will cost around £30).

As for the Series X, i would add around $150-200 onto the Series S price, so i would go with $499 max. (article is in dollars)

So Microsoft truly has no idea what they are doing. If they didn't care about selling console units, why would they sell a much cheaper console that's way weaker to get more of a user base? Splitting the user base with a 1/3 the power machine is so dumb because it'll mean halo infinite as well as all other Xbox games will never truly look anywhere near as good as Sonys ps5 games. Also xbox has bee pushing all this crossplay bs so that means for sure there games will also run on both the series s and series x at the same time. That means lower framerates on all multi-player games. This basically means if you care about graphics, look elsewhere.
I thought the cloud was going to do away with console generations. I thought the cloud was going to make the OG Xbox one the most powerful console ever. It's actually weaker than a one x plus an SSD. They don't have any idea what to do. They want the strongest console and they want the weakest and possibly cheapest console, and they want them both to run the same games along with the 1.3 TF regular Xbox one. Look at the reveal and delay of halo infinite. They also had full marketing deals with monster energy and possibly others that just got shafted by the delay. They were full steam ahead with that game and thought it ran and looked amazing. Why was there pop in on that game with supposed SSD's? Because it was running on a gaming PC that probably had an SSD however the game is designed to run on regular HDD's ala the Xbox one.

To this day we still have not seen a single next gen game showcased on an actual Xbox series x at all. All of those reveal trailers and barely any gameplay was all on gaming PC's fully optimized to look as good as possible. Even the halo infinite gameplay.

This is what I've been saying for months! Simply bumping up the resolution and FPS isn't going to make a game 'next generational'. The very core design and world of the game needs to improve. How the hell are they going to do that with Xbox One from 2013 tech holding them back? Even if you remove Xbox One, you now have Series S holding them back.

Such a shame, because the original Xbox was a great piece of kit. The base hardware was fantastic for the time, having a built-in HDD for everyone meant that every game developer was taking advantage of the HDD and they were able to pull off stuff that PS2 or GCN could never do.

Phil Spencer has done nothing good for the Xbox brand so far, and nearly completely ruined the Xbox brand at this point.

Let assume is it a 4TF system as rumor suggest.

If I take FS as an example, 4TF is just above PC min requirements, mean that this game on SeS will run with min settings: no way to have anything running at 1440p/120fps with this( except Tetris), hopefully 1080p/30fps will be the target.

That requires game dev to design games to be compatible with this 4TF baseline, ie a lot of scaling is needed which for sure will be a pain is the ass vs usual console game development if they also target to take advantage of the 12TF SX.
They can also choose not to spend to much money on the scaling and focus on SeS, which means as I predict that SX power will never be fully used for all the gen.

But what happens if a dev is releasing a game in 2/3years with a 6TF min requirement, not compatible with SeS: does that means it will only be available on SX?

If so, it will be very difficult for consumers to manage which game is working or not on their system.

MS can also not allow this and requires mandatory release for both SeS and SX for any game on Xbox.
Will that means with my example that some game in a couple of years will not be available on Xbox due to SeS? Or that SeS perf will be crappy and customer fooled?

I hope MS will not make the mistake to allow games only compatible with SX in the future, because it will introduce in console market the worst part of PC gaming (does/how this game runs in my setup?) which would be in my opinion a huge misalignment with what a great part of consoles gamers are looking for.
