IGN: Sonic Unleashed Wii Review

It's a shame, too, because this time more than any other, Sonic Team nearly had it. Indeed, had Unleashed shipped with a focus on polished daytime levels, IGN has no doubt that it would've been one of the best entrants in the franchise's long history. But the developer's insistence on avoiding a pure hedgehog experience at all costs has once again backfired, transforming a speedy beauty into a slow beast.

You got the best version of Sonic. The way the Wii's going, 7.2 is AAA standard to the max for the win!

Shoko5648d ago

AAA standard for Wii is a 9.5. I don't know how many times I've said this, but:

Mario Galaxy: 9.7
Okami: 9.0
Twilight Princess: 9.5
Zack and Wiki: 9.0
Smash Bros Brawl: 9.5
Metroid Prime 3: 9.5
World of Goo: 9.5

Now, please list me 7 EXCLUSIVE 360 titles that have gotten 9s+ plus.........

gumgum995648d ago

@shoko

I think he means minimum score for a AAA title. it may not be a high as mario, but its a start and a step in the right direction for the sonic franchice.

a huge step.

Bnet3435648d ago

Okami isn't Wii exclusive.

Morgan Douglas Jones5648d ago (Edited 5648d ago )

Lol @ Shoko. Okami = PS2 game, Twilight Princess = GameCube game.

And the Xbox 360 doesn't have 7 exclusives that are above 90+ on Metacritic.

Mass Effect = Also on PC = Multi-platform
Gears of War = Also on PC = Multi-platform
Left 4 Dead = Also on PC = Multi-platform
BioShock = Also on PC and PS3 = Multi-platform

That leaves one lol. Halo 3. WOW!

badz1495648d ago

seriously dude, Wii doesn't need anyone backing and defending it at this point of time! Wii has strong sales and that's their biggest gun! but AAA for Wii are rare and most of the AAA only came from Nintendo themselves! you can keep all the exclusives for Wii all you want but Wii has the most exclusives and also the most showelware this generation and that's impressive considering it already surpassed the amount of shovelware for PS3 and 360 combined and 360 is a year older!

dammit.
I just knew it.
why do they always stray from norm we come to expect and throw at us the nighttime terror?
why Sega, why?

iamtehpwn5648d ago

But noooooooooo.
Who thought of the Werewolf gameplay?
FIRE HIM, please.

Shoko5648d ago

For real. They always have to throw in a gay gimmick that just messes u p the whole game. You still haven't learned Sega?

ChickeyCantor5647d ago (Edited 5647d ago )

I was thinking the same until i realized that normal sonic and werehog sonic are pretty much separated into different levels.
They pretty much implemented another type of platform game in there...
So i'm not bothered by it...they should just go old school with these things its that simple.
Sonic 3 was pretty much innovative with the things they did there....SEGA should go back doing 2D sonic games...(and i don't care if they are in 3D space...just keep it 2D).

1. 7.2 isn't as bad of a score as some people were expecting for this game. At least they aren't saying the game sucks ass, which is good news for the Sonic franchise.
2. I don't know. I might rent this when it comes out on the PS3 (it IS going to be on the PS3, right). The werehog thing they're complaining about actually seems intriguing to me. Seems right now that the stuff about that part that they are going on about Sega did by design not to make it suck but to make it a little more challenging to play that particular version of the character. Could be wrong, though, and it'll be so over exaggerated that it sucks anyway, but I'm somewhat interested now.

Durffen5648d ago

Comparing this score to the past scores of older Sonic titles, this seems like a must buy for Sonic fans.

At least it wasn't a complete flop like a lot of people were expecting. 7.2 isn't a bad score at all, it's definitely a considerable buy.

jtucker785647d ago

True 7.2 isn't bad, but considering that there have been so many amazing games released this last month, Sonic is only worth getting if you are either:
1) a massive fan
or
2) have loads of money to buy all the amazing games AND have loads of spare time to play them all.

If I have to read another one of these lists that contains the sentence "The game that started it all" I'm gonna go nuts.

And when it comes to fan favourite zones in Sonic 3 (he mentioned Hydro City, Marble Garden and Launch Base), I'd replace Launch base and Marble Garden with Ice Cap zone. Never heard anyone refer to the others as favourites.

NJShadow671d ago (Edited 671d ago )

I sorta' stopped caring about this list when I saw Sonic Spinball (a genuinely great game) ranked lower than some of the noted atrocities.

Pyrofire95670d ago

Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed is still my favorite kart racer.
I've never really been able to play online tho. D:
Can't even play Team Sonic Racing online cause the servers are broken and don't queue people together.
P.S. This is such a random list. I really don't agree with it. Maybe this really is how they rank it but them just seems odd personally.

Top Ten Sonic the Hedgehog Games

Phil writes, "Today, June 23rd, 2021, is Sonic the Hedgehog's 30th anniversary. 30 years ago today in 1991 a blue hedgehog named Sonic took the gaming world by storm with a spin dash, a too-cool-for-school attitude, and a hankering for chili dogs. SPC celebrates the occasion with a special top ten list, presenting the site's picks for the very best of the Blue Blur's biggest and boldest titles. After you've checked out the picks here, which Sonic games would you select as your personal favorites?"

Jls11046d ago

wheres sonic 06 lol. I know im in the minority but if you can look past all the glitches I actually liked the game.

Chocoburger1045d ago

I have played the game more than I'm willing to admit. Even beat all the DLC as well, and nearly S ranked everything including the DLC.

The game had good graphics for the time, and a fantastic soundtrack. If only it had an extra year of development it could have been a decent game. People keep harping on the kiss at the end of the game as if its a big deal. It really isn't (people kiss their cats and dogs all the time, and no one freaks out about that).

They try extra hard to hate on the game, and while it does have a multitude of unacceptable flaws and had serious development issues (Yuji Naka quit SEGA early on during the project which definitely caused some internal struggles at Sonic Team), there are some positive aspects about the game that people don't give it credit for.

DarXyde1046d ago

Hmmm, this is kinda cheating, but I would rate Sonic 3 & Knuckles as #1, rather than having the two games separately occupy #2 and #3.

That was literally the only game I played for YEARS.

-Hermit-1046d ago

In any order

Sonic Adventure 1
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Heroes
Sonic Shuffle
Sonic Generations
Sonic Lost World
Sonic Unleashed
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic CD
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
