Sony’s Quietness Is Not An Inflated Disaster

In essence, the claims that Sony is scared of Microsoft’s Xbox Series X is a ridiculous one. Anyone thinking both companies do not know what they have up their sleeves do not understand how businesses of such scale works.

Apparently the messaging is that people are more interested in the state of Sony's intentions for PS5 than the actual specs of the XSX.

It baffles me how a somewhat full spec reveal, along with some decent key features drops off everyone's talking point in less than a day, and the news becomes dominated by what Sony needs to do next to beat MS, or more laughably, catch up to MS offerings, when Sony has been doing a lot of what MS is now doing for years, or decades before.

So, if MS is setting the messaging, they are setting it to people's interest in PS5. Which if Sony is doing this as a tactic, then it's pretty brilliant, because by the time Sony does announce, people will be chomping at the bit for the news itself. If Sony manages to quench all these rediculous things they supposedly need to do because they're going to do them, then it just makes them seem like they're ahead of the curve and know what people wanted....when in fact, they were probably doing it already anyways, because they're doing it now.

That's probably a good thing for MS. When Sony was vocal being vocal, some may say arrogant, at the start of this gen, it wasn't really doing MS any favors.

What I've noticed though, is that when Sony does drop some news that will somehow be competitive in nature, they tend to wipe the floor with MS, and take away all their thunder, or just make MS look weak or bad by comparison.

I think some of that is the timing that Sony has had for these kinds of things this gen, and I think a lot of that is due to the new marketing company they started using at the start of this gen. They have been on the ball when it comes to all these major marketing points all generation.

Because of this, it's really hard to believe that anything going on with Sony's silence now has one iota to do with their reaction to MS and their talk. it seems more like Sony is just letting MS dig itself a hole, which Sony can then go and fill in later, or leave MS scrambling to react to whatever MS has to say.

Maybe that's not really what Sony is trying to do, and they just have a plan that they are executing on the time tables they lay out. But the end result makes it seem like Sony is being cool, while MS is scrambling to get as much attention as possible....although that latter point may be because MS likes to talk so much at every oppurtunity, especially after Sony says something, which makes them seem reactionary. This last release of info is the first time in a while they seem to be pro-active.

Memory and SSD size are also some important specifications that need to be released. Price point will be very interesting this time, but I can't see Xbox being cheaper than Sony with the 12Tflop announcement. The other possible and more interesting announcement, in my opinion, will be the cheaper and lower powered Xbox console.

Which means Xbox will occupy the high and low end of consoles (assuming PS5 is 9TF) which is exactly how they are this gen. Sony owning the middle ground is going to play in their favor again, imo.

Quite possible indeed. Here's the thing though, Microsoft's lower end console, in terms of Tflop performance, could end up being the same as Sony's console, but without dedicated ray tracing cores, and that is something that could muddy the waters for consumers. This is why I'm actually more interested in seeing just what Microsoft does end up doing with the lower end console.

Conversely, they could come in with something similar to an RX 5500XT, which is a 5 Tflop GPU, that with architectural efficiencies, performs similar to the 6 Tflop RX 580 (Xbox One X). There are so many possibilities right now. Microsoft could even end up launching 3 consoles for all we know. I love the pre-next gen speculation, and trying to figure out what moves each company will make!

I'd honestly see the X1X being their lower end if anything. It's already in the name for the series paradigm they seem to want to deliver. That would put it lower than the PS5, even if the lower rumors are to be believed. It'd also pretty much stall almost all game advancement beyond graphics for 3rd party games next gen. I don't think MS cares much about that though. They can market the higher end XSX as the most powerful, sell the cheaper X1X at a tidy profit and have something that can potentially outsell the regular PS5. Doesn't matter all that fancy new tech in the more expensive version will go to waste.

Maybe they have another new console though. Just seems like they'd be going overboard on what they're offering if they start to flood the market with a lot of options. Keep it simple, but adequate at a reasonable price, and over time, people will buy in when they're ready, and the price is right for them.

Most of that has nothing to do with what I said and he realized that, which is why when I highlighted this with my "grand tour" comment, he responded with "What would news do for you?"

Think that was true after the official reveal. But MS was scrambling to curb all the negative reception after theirs, and then even more after e3. Before that, sony was pretty quiet, and surprised everyone when they announced their reveal event rather suddenly. They took MS off guard to the point that MS rescheduled their own reveal. Funny thing is that Sony was criticized for being too quiet back then as well, and that was with just rumors about the next xbox.

The PS3 wasn't the cause of Sony's financial troubles. Early on, it didn't help them, and they lost most of the money they made during the PS2 gen, but Sony's troubles were much deeper than the console and it's cost to manufacture the first 5 years. If sony were truly going to be bankrupted by PS, they would have dropped it earlier, or restructured it so it was it's own company outside of Sony so it wouldn't have an effect on Sony's financials.

Not really. I've only ever owned PlayStation consoles but I think I might be switching to Xbox next gen. The problem with your reasoning is, is that almost all these pro-consumer things that MS is being given credit for, Sony has been doing for quite a while now.

If you're talking about Game Pass, then OK, I can accept that. Cheap games day one and all that.

But the rest, Sony either already does it, or they are likely going to do it(BC). Maybe the places where some of those features are available to you on Xbox make more sense for you, in which case fair enough, but this idea that Sony is way behind MS in the consumer friendly market are extremely misinformed at best, purposefully misleading at worst.

As far as playing where you're friends are, fair enough too. But that's probably more anecdotal to you than the larger discussion being had.

Personally, about the only negative consumer facing thing I feel is relevant to me is their censorship policy, and while that does effect me because of the games I like to play, I have already had those games censored long before Sony made it system wide. It's been a criticism of localization publishers long before Sony ever entered the market.

I think jumping to react to MS news here would make them look weaker. I mean, that's what Spencer has done all gen when Sony announces or releases anything, and he looks reactionary, and desperate. And so far if you look past the obvious diehard loyalist PlayStation culture, MS is putting out a console that most likely is superior hardware, with a ton of new first party studios and new IP, and a killer game service, a cloud streaming service that’s so far much better than stadia, and other pro consumer policies ( like free upgrades) it seems ms is ready for a fight that Sony is actually going to have to make an effort on. - and I don’t think the solve is biofeedback on the controller or just relying on their 1st party titles. Gen 9 is already bigger and beyond the gen 8s squabbles about resolution and exclusives. That’s old school thinking now.

If that was true they would have replied immediately with a Tweet. It really is that easy to use Twitter to spread information which is what Microsoft did. This tells us that they will probably release that information in something like a PlayStation Direct or a press conference. Sony's silence is a problem, especially when you look at all of the events that they have cancelled or been absent from over the last two years, and all of the executives who have left the company over the last year. Ultimately though, all will be revealed, and it will be interesting to see what they have been working on all this time.

It's to late in the day now to change anything I guess? Unless they delay it until next year? So I doubt they where waiting for MS to reveal there specs only to then come out and reveal there system is a lower spec system. I think both systems are going to be near enough the same. Maybe the PS5 will have less tflops (9) as some rumours suggest. Or maybe it has more 12.6 as other rumours suggest.

They can change how they release the information. Once your competition has gone, you can see the reactions to the news, then decide how to give your own message, focusing on the pros, glossing over the cons. MS actually delayed it's reveal event after Sony's last time around....although they kind of failed to deliver something better....and if it was better than their original conference then....wow, just wow.

Changes to hardware at this point would be minimal. Even with a delay, sourcing happens months before the actual manufacturing. While they could potentially increase the clock speed to increase the power rating, that makes the console more expensive to make. Other things like RAM could potentially be changed late in the game, but eventually, a final design is going to have to be finalized, leaving only minor changes to the hardware....mostly hard drive size and clock speed, as the only viable changes. Hard drive can be an increase without much added cost, but clock speed increases can pose yield problems on new chips, and heat issues if the design of the console doesn't compensate for the increased heat put off.

Sony will wait until right before holiday 2020 to announce everything and EVERYONE will be talking about the PS5. The Xbox reveal that was 7-9 months prior will be old news at that point. Sony knows what they are doing. They're on top of the console game for a reason.

Xbox througout its history has been an afterthought in most gaming markets. Europe and Asia are all about Sony and Nintendo. Xbox can only compete in the states. This won't change next generation.

The PS3 overtook the 360 in total sales in early 2013. It was selling at a faster rate in europe since launch and was outselling the 360 by 2008, despite having a much higher price and a later launch date. In Japan, the 360 was pretty much dead. Xbox was only ahead in the states.

The fact that Sony had more markets than 360, lost almost 70 million fans, and barely beat the second generation of a system that only sold 24 million units, coming off a system that sold 150 million units says a lot about how good 360 was.

One thing I will say I hope Sony don't go for 13TF etc it's gotta be 499 max. I always make th anology an Rx 5700xt plays same games as Radeon VII at same visual setting same with 2070ti v 2080ti same visuals just higher FPS 132 FPS Vs 119 FPS pointless when it's going to be 60fps locked.

Personally I hope the PS5 is as expensive as it can be because more power is always better as these consoles have to last us 7 years. Trust me before you know it devs will be complaining about the lack of power in the PS5 (if it is 9.2 t-flops) compared to the Xbox Series X 12 t flops.

The fact that Sony and Microsoft have a good professional relationship but “fans” can’t seem to keep politics out of it is pathetic. Can’t wait to see where both companies go from here on out. This Gen Sony dominated but next gen Xbox has a fresh start to catch up to Sony. Sony has to put in a lot more work next gen if Sony wants to maintain the lead.

I'll admit, xbox is coming out real strong this time around, while sony is strategically playing its cards. Reveals are very important and need to be done right or It could all be blown up in their face like xbox one. This is the reason I think sony hasn't revealed much, I'm almost sure now that they will have the weaker console or they would have probably revealed it by now. It now all comes down to price sony is surely trying to gain intell on xbox price so that sony can price accordingly or this can all go down hill for them. I mean imagine if sony comes out with a 500 price point for 9 tf console and xbox comes out with 500 12tf console, that would be historically disastrous for sony and will very likely diverge customers away and towards xbox.

Yup remember how close the 7th generation between Sony and Microsoft was? 87 million consoles sold for the PS3 vs 84 million consoles sold for the 360. We could very well see that again.

Sony has already proven themselves going all the way back to PS1. They have the games. They don't need to say anything.

PS has and will always be about the exclusive games. I grew up on Nintendo, but in 1998 I sold half of my N64 games to buy a PS1 after playing RE2 once. That's all it took. FF7, and Gran Turismo were just icing on the cake.
MS hardware is enticing, and Gamepass is great (I have it on PC), but they need a system seller, and I'm just not that into Halo, no disrespect. I know there are amazing MS titles like Ori that I love and played... on PC. Maybe with all the studios they bought, MS will have a stacked games lineup at E3 and surprise us all, that could be enticing...so I haven't written them off. BUT the burden of proof is squarely on MS, which is why they are so vocal.

Not to be too hard on Halo, because I know a lot of people love it, and I'll definitely try Infinite on Gamepass on PC. If it's amazing I'll be the first to admit it.
