Quake creator John Carmack says games ‘like Overwatch’ let you win ‘even if you didn’t contribute’

John Carmack has had quite a bit to say about the modern shooter on the Joe Rogan Podcast, targeting the likes of Overwatch for allowing players that "suck" to still win.

That's been Blizzards design since Cataclysm came out. Every game they've released since that point has been a neutered shallow experience with no sense of accomplishment.

yomfweeee1717d ago

If you want a sense of accomplishment in WoW there is extremely difficult content. Just because the easy things may be easy for easy for some... it can be a challenge for others.

Rachel_Alucard1717d ago

The issue with this is in the hey day of things, content was challenging overall in many areas, whereas now the hard content has been pushed to being even harder and locked to some optional non required place in the game. XIV is notorious for this just looking at the differences between XI and XIV.

Sophisticated_Chap1717d ago

That's because they want to cater to millenials.

porkChop1717d ago

Do you realize that millenials are between the ages of 23 and 38? Millenials aren't kids like many seem to think. You're likely a millenial.

PurpHerbison1717d ago

You can be a millenial and recognize the way the majority of them behave at the same time, porkChop.

DarXyde1717d ago

PurpHerbison,

The majority who you've very likely never heard from or the vocal minority that gets the most publicity?

Brave_Losers_Unite1717d ago

Why is it always you that writes the dumbest s**t

ShadowWolf7121716d ago

Most Millenials grew up in the NES-PS2 era, my guy. You're likely thinking of Gen Z, who are... well... The way they are because Gen X-ers and Millennials screwed up raising them the same way that Millennials like to complain about Boomers and early Gen X-ers screwed up raising them.

It's a whole smorgasbord of generational blame-shifting. :D

PurpHerbison1716d ago

The majority that I am surrounded by and grew up around my entire life, my peers? Who else would know better than a millennial when it comes to millennials?

Well the interview doesn't really target just one game the title Overwatch is used as an example the statements in the interview could apply to cod, apex, wow etc if it's a team based game and you suck but your team's no good you will still benifit from winning via xp and unlocks even if you contribute nothing

Cmoney0071717d ago

Overwatch in a nutshell:

Play with friends = Fun
Play with randoms = Usually cancer
Play with randoms in ranked = Cancer
Play with friends in ranked = Fun
Lore = It doesn’t matter if you care about it or not
Overwatch community = It is usually cancer
Loot boxes = I don’t see a point of spend much money on skins

kneon1717d ago

I worked it out once and I was getting a loot box about every 45-50 minutes. There has never been any need to spend money on loot boxes.

Cmoney0071717d ago

I bought some skins a few years ago for Tracer. Didn’t buy any other loot boxes after that.

Sono4211717d ago

Yeah, honestly Overwatch is one of the few where the loot boxes don't really bother me honestly, but I haven't been playing it that much lately.

But when it comes to the Overwatch community being toxic, oh yeah, definitely, go look through the custom games and you'll see some pure cancer. 18+ only date lobby, drunk girl gaming lobby, date sim lobby, chill and date lobby, LGBTQ only lobby(very ironic), 15+ dating lobby, bad boys only lobby, and i'm defenitlely leaving some out.

It's all so cringe, and just screams desperate. I don't know how someone could un-ironically make a lobby like that, let alone play it. Some serious cancer.

RizBiz1717d ago

But they still exist, and that's cancer.

Brave_Losers_Unite1717d ago

Loot boxes are easy to get in Overwatch

got_dam1717d ago

I lisyened to the interview, and this article is very missleading.

deadfrag1717d ago

I have more fun replaying Doom 2016 levels for scores than playing shit games like this!

He's not wrong. Also I really enjoyed that podcast

huh..... well this could get interesting.

VenomUK14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I predicted it would be Hermen Hulst as the new CEO, I never predicted there would be another…

Hulst will likely Host the PlayStation press event and hopefully there will be a positive energy at this new beginning for the division. I’m encouraged that both he and Hideaki Nishino reference the future so it sounds like Sony has a plan.

I'm a bit skeptical. The new guy is unknown. Of all the leaders in the past 18 years Sony has had great leaders at the helm Carrying on the legacy of what made PS great. Sony's has a newer vision and focus for PS this time around. We'll see what happens.

As I said before two leads can be a good thing wherever they want to take PS they'll have a single joint focus and take PS to new heights (if said focus is gamer first) or bad if they have two different visions. Then you'll end up like the circus clowns over at MS.

Oh God no!! We have seen nothing since Hulst took over WW Studios. As a gamer ands PS fan I’m worried about what would happen

-Foxtrot8h ago

Well hopefully they have a plan because Herman hasn’t really done much since he got promoted last time

Remakes and remasters mainly

The Wood6h ago

Spencer killed the xbox console. You're gunna have to cap for Microsoft gaming now. There's only sony and Nintendo in the hardware game now

1Victor4h ago

@obscured “ The plan:”
Be as obvious as possible and make 10 new accounts after been banned.

Personally I’ll wait and see how they perform before judging them.
All that said this feel like a Japanese comedy duo one🤷🏿 one corporate man the other a delivery guy trying to save the company 🤣

This is a really nice selection to me because Hulst is an actual game developer and has been doing so for decades. A developer in charge of making games. Not bad.

Plus the separation of responsibility is interesting and a nice way of handling an incredibly complex role.

Obscure

By that same logic you can say the same about phil...and hes had longer to accomplish something at xbox.

Joint venture could be very tricky. They need to be on the exact same page on things. It's two guys calling shots.

We know Herman, but we dont know the other guy or his motives/agendas. Obviously it's to make money but how he'll go about it we'll see soon enough.

JackBNimble11h ago

That's why they would need 3 , so when they disagree they can vote . 1 on 1 could be asking for trouble, but at least sony isn't letting 1 guy take playstation in "his own direction ".

VenomUK4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

@Lightning77 You're right, it is definitely an unusual situation to have TWO CEOs so the question is why?
My guess is that Hulst as a former studio head of Guerrilla and Westerner is best placed to watch over and communicate with the near-universal Western PlayStation studios and film/TV production.

Hideaki Nishino seems to have the more senior role dealing with development of PlayStation hardware and the PSN which I believe is based in Japan so perhaps he is a better point of contact with them. As long as Hulst has a direct line of communication with Nishino and can communicate the desires and needs of developers and publishers for the next-gen then hopefully this two CEO system will turn out well. Hopefully!

neutralgamer199227m ago

Best of luck to both. Please prioritize the gamers and focus on creating exceptional games. While it's important to consider the business side, this industry should not be driven solely by numbers and spreadsheets. PlayStation has historically been known for pushing the boundaries and delivering new experiences, but this generation has been somewhat disappointing. Despite impressive sales and the PS5's strong performance, the overall impact has felt lacking, possibly due to the pandemic's timing.

A significant part of the issue is the lack of strong competition from Xbox. Healthy competition is crucial for driving better games and innovation. Meanwhile, Nintendo continues to follow its unique path, but rumors suggest their next console might only match the power of a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, which feels outdated given the discussions about the PS7 and the next Xbox.

Additionally, we need a more vibrant AA market. Not everything should be about AAA, big-budget games that take 4-5 years to develop. One underperforming AAA title can jeopardize an entire studio. A diverse range of game experiences, including more AA titles, can lead to a healthier industry overall.

The Thunderdome reference wasn't lost on me 😎

mudakoshaka7h ago

@Barlos Had no idea that was from Thunderdome. I remember a similar line from Con Air when Steve Buscemi says it to Nic Cage after fighting the other guy in the cargo hold. Con Air must have taken it from Thunderdome.

romulus2314h ago

Hulst will be CEO of the studios business group, and Nishino CEO of Platforms.

Relientk7715h ago

Good luck to them and I hope they do great jobs. Let's see the games. Really hoping that rumored PlayStation Showcase is coming up soon.
