Super Mario 64's Physics Flawlessly Recreated in Dreams

A complaint often levelled at user-generated content is that it rarely plays as well as a professionally made game. It’s a fair criticism: hobbyist creators working in suites such as LittleBigPlanet are often capable of incredible artistic achievements, but it’s rare for amateurs to get that all-important “feel” right. That’s what makes this Super Mario 64-inspired sandbox made in Dreams all the more impressive.

My only complaint with Dreams is that I went into the game thinking I would be able to remix and use all of the other user created assets no matter what. Yes there are quite a bit that are unlocked to borrow but I found that most of the user created characters that I wanted to use in my own endeavors were not able to be downloaded or remixed.

I get it that people don’t want others taking credit for and stealing the show with their creations, but I just imagine what the Dreams world would be like if everything were 100% “remix-able”.

There’s also the chance that maybe I’m not doing it right and these creations are usable?

That's pretty damn impressive. Feel like this game is gonna be a big deal.

Looking forward to what my mind creates with Dreams....this is creativity at its finest folks.....Furthermore, I look forward to seeing what others create and try out their games as well.

Dunno if I'd call copying something in this manner 'creativity at it's finest', but I do have high hopes for original creations in Dreams.

Bleucrunch1747d ago

Well yes copying others works is not creative, but I suspect their is more to this new game than just recreating what has already been done. Those works just show the level of detail you can do by showcasing other works that have already been done in the past.

This is how you would market the game, suggesting that you could re-create a classic that has been beloved by everyone and potential add you own "creative" spin to it. The possibilities are endless it would seem with dreams because you can create your own version of classics. (I always wanted a Super Mario that was more dark and gore)....

I could make the world of mario 64 and turn it into a dodge ball game where you would hop on the enemies to neutralize, then pick them up and try to throw it at the opposing enemy to knock them out. Creative things like that.

Flawlessly is an exaggeration. Besides the speed in which he runs, most of the animations do look quite similar. I wish they'd release the early access physically, it's hard for me to fork over 30 for a digital game but dang it I wanna play this

good job recreating the shitty physics of that overrated game, dreams is a creation-tool marvel indeed

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno35d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.

If they ever did I hope they would add onto it, there's so much you could do with Princess Peach's castle alone

roadkillers78d ago

Or just make the Mario 128... the cancelled sequel that sounded amazing (or was it just an amazing tale).

fr0sty78d ago

Funny that after all these years, we still use 64 bit CPUs, so it wouldn't make sense to call it that.

fr0sty78d ago

Yeah, a straight remake doesn't sound good to me. Same formula, but different game.

Number1TailzFan79d ago

Each level is pretty small today in the original game, I don't like huge levels but I think they could be at least 2x bigger, or close to it and more of them, with more things to do.

They could do a mix of having open levels and more linear ones like in 3D World or Land, I doubt they will do that but it would make a change.

Neonridr78d ago

I mean Odyssey's levels weren't massive, but requiring you to do different things in each world is what made the levels feel bigger than they were.

ZeekQuattro79d ago

I'd prefer a Oydessey 2 or Galaxy 3. Besides the DS
game was a Mario 64 remake complete with more playable characters, stages, bosses and muti player content.

Cacabunga78d ago (Edited 78d ago )

I did not like Odyssey i found the idea of ot lame.. i find it boring to just look for moons instead of exploring and enjoying the levels. Let’s not talk about the extremely repetitive and ridiculously easy bosses. Level design is so meh most of the time. Galaxy 2 is a far better game so Galaxy 3 anytime!!!

TiredGamer78d ago

Agreed. I enjoyed Odyssey for a while, but it quickly became very formulaic where each level felt like a checklist of things to do with WAY too many moons to find. The Galaxy series were the best, as they took some of what made 64 great and juiced it up perfectly.

Yes! Let's release an almost 30 year old game to kick off the next generation for Nintendo...
I'm over re-releases...FEED ME NEW MARIO!
