Why is Final Fantasy VIII Never Coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch?

These days, you can find Final Fantasy VII on a wide range of platforms. In 2019, it’ll be joining Final Fantasy IX and the remasters of of X, X-2 & XII on Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch. So what’s the deal? Why is Final Fantasy VIII given the cold shoulder constantly? The answer, lies in two possible reasons that fans have debated across the internet for ages.

I really wish it would get a rerelease on some platform. I know people have their opinions and I know the game has issues but it is still my favorite in series. Before anyone ask, no it wasn't my first final fantasy.

tbh FF 7,8 and 9 are all pretty close to me in terms of quality. FF7 has a better story and villain, FF8 has better character customization and triple triad, FF9 has the most charm of all of them. FFF8 is by far my favorite of the 3 cause it was my first real jrpg, ff9 after that cause I love the setting of it so much and found the story and characters real charming. FF7 is really good, It just didnt connect with me that well.

Wasn't my first FF either, but it's also my favourite. The character development, overall plot, soundtrack, world/setting, summons, etc., were all top notch. Sure, the magic system was weird. But it was hardly a bad system, it was just different.

Out of all the FF games it's the one that has stuck with me after all these years. It was a very mature story, more so than previous games.

Yes I own it on steam but the steam version was basically a port of the crappy PC Port from back in the day. Would like a proper release of the original PlayStation version.

You say you have the pc port, so why not just mod it? It's just as good if not better than the original ps1 version then.

Well for one I'm a lazy SoB and don't feel like hunting down mods/fixes. Plus I would really like a mobile version. Be it a Switch port, or Android like the other ps1 ff games. It deserves a proper rerelease like the other games.

I believe this has sort of an answer from not too long ago. That the files for this game weren’t kept around or something like that so it was impossible to port it. Although it’s avaliable on the ps3 psn so who knows about that.

The game is on PC, they simply can port that to the PS4. And even though the audio was worse than the PS1 version, I'll still take it

i paid for this ff9 thing which couldn‘t be more ugly to play on modern equipment. and remaking ff8 would be way too costly for the no input maximum output approach. just switch on some of your ancient consoles and play it there. or watch a youtube video of someone playing it until you got your nostalgic fix.

This is one of my favorite FF games. A game from when Squaresoft was basically that generation’s equivalent of Naughty Dog or Rockstar. I miss those days.

No, you peasant. They lost most of the dev materials to ff8 and thats why SE cant remake it. They'd have to make the game ground up all over again and they have too much on their plate

Not keeping all the materials from a game would be unsurprising, even expected, in the 80s - but it's sort of mindblowing that Square didn't keep stuff from such a huge game post-16 bit era. With how much games had begun to cost and how long it took to make, why toss any of it or misplace it?

They're too intimidated by the current political correctness air in the West. There would be a pathetic backlash from 100 or so people on twitter about how VIII is racist, sexist, and noninclusive for having a cast of six white human kids,of which the female members are token tropes (damsel, ditz, sexy teacher.)

Unfortunately those "100" snowflakes are enough to coat the game-journalism scene with their nuclear-winter fallout, and a legion of virtue-signaling journalists would be full-force writing "It's 2019" hit-pieces in valiant defense of them.

Anyone who's ever seen the Death Note anime; you know when Light goes batshit when he writes pages of names down at a time? Yeah that'd be every SJW at their keyboard on the day of a VIII remaster announcement.
