Avellone Recommends Microsoft to Fire Obsidian Execs; Would Be Open to Working with the Studio Then

Former Obsidian founder and owner Chris Avellone recommends Microsoft's Phil Spencer to fire the current upper management while keeping the rest of the developers, which he believes to be good ones.

He also said he would be open to working with Obsidian again if those leadership changes happened under Microsoft's oversight.

Not sure this would ve a great idea

darthv722015d ago

Sounds like the former head is still bitter about being ousted. I dont know the whole story but thats just my assumption.

Skull5212015d ago

The real question is who the **** is Chris Avellone?

rainslacker2015d ago

He's a former creative director for Obsidian. He came into the company from interplay, after other interplay employees left to create obsidian. I don't know the details of his leaving. Research suggest it was his choice, but we know that amicable departures aren't always amicable.

That said, this is a pretty strong thing for him to say, since Obsidian is considered to make good games. He left a few years ago, and the only reason they had financial troubles was because they were banking on a bonus from Bethesda which they didn't get because the metascore was one point too low. Going forward, its unlikely the studio itself will manage its own finances.

Obsidian should get some of the BioWare founders (when they were are actually great) Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk

This guy has some balls. Is he really that desperate?

Not great idea Microsoft, that would contradict your msg if you follow through with this.

Disagree, please explain how this would not be the case.

Switch4One2016d ago

What are you talking about? Nobody has disagreed with you.

XiNatsuDragnel2016d ago

I thought there was differing opinions

Zeref2016d ago

I doubt they're gonna actually do it.

XiNatsuDragnel2015d ago

Big bro, it's Microsoft you don't what there going to do .

ccgr2016d ago

I wonder if they'll listen....

Srhalo2016d ago

I agree, fire the leadership that's a great way to boost moral and punish people for selling out.

Nah, not a good idea at all. Why ruin a studio that is making good games? Granted, as he says - he recommends keeping the actual game makers and getting rid of the management.

Alexious2016d ago

Yes, that's the conundrum. Whether one believes Avellone saying that the management is what's bad at Obsidian or not.

Sirk7x2015d ago (Edited 2015d ago )

Regardless, Microsoft owns them now, so any management will likely have to report to Microsoft gaming management. Everyone at Obsidian has new bosses lol.

DragonbornZ2016d ago

It was going around that the leadership at Oblivion were mismanaging the studio, hence their financial situation prior to MS acquiring them.

rainslacker2015d ago

I think they mismanaged to the extent they relied too much on a bonus to continue forward. They over extended themselves, and when that bonus didn't come, despite making a successful product, they didn't have the means to continue in the traditional way.

Whether or not they mismanaged the studio in terms of game development I can't say, as they generally still make good games. I doubt they'll have much control over their finances with MS owning them.

So it looks like they have abandoned unreal for future iterations of the game and are sticking with ego. So that means no decent VR support on PC and none on console seeing as the ego can't handle it properly. I think I'm done with this franchise it's turned into fifa with a hefty price tag and no innovation from one year to the next. Time for someone else to have a go at this licence
