For comparison’s sake, VGC’s estimates say The Last Guardian sold 484K in its first week.

I thought this Shadow of the Colossus remake, being the more accessible game, would’ve done better in its first week but it still performed rather well.

JackBNimble2230d ago

It also hasn't done as well as Sea of Thieves in its first week... just throwing that out there.

Lokii2230d ago

Well see of thieves came with the game pass.

DarXyde2230d ago

Are game pass owners counted in there as "sales"?

If so, that's highly disingenuous. Not that it matters; I don't think it really matters how Shadow of the Colossus sells at this point since it's already made its rounds successfully on two other platforms.

moegooner882230d ago

You are actually throwing out that you are clueless, since no sales for Sea of T have been revealed, just the usual MS marketing bluff.

JackBNimble2230d ago

Yes, let's make excuses why this exclusive is selling mediocre. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

BlaqMagiq12230d ago

So can you show me how much Sea of Thieves sold at retail?

Silly Mammo2230d ago

Yes let's compare a new IP heavily marketed by MS and hailed as the next big MP vs a remake of a classic niche game.

Also, SoT is available on the PC. But yes completely the same. 🙄

2230d ago
bluefox7552230d ago

I guess we'll never know, since MS doesn't ever release numbers.

mkis0072230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Give us the link to this information...as it hasnt been posted before.

Or are you trying to claim MS's 2 million figure as sold? That would be a pretty stupid thing for you to say though.

Gazondaily2230d ago

SoT is now some mad mega title with gargantuan hype according to some on here? 😂 that revisionist history already in the works.

Nyxus2230d ago

@ Septic: uhm yes? Are you really suggesting that Sea of Thieves hasn't been heavily marketed and hyped by Microsoft for years?

sprinterboy2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Sot is also a month rental game on game pass before gamers swim a mile and sink through dehydration and boredom.
Edit: plus its not like ms have loads of games outside of 3rd party.

Hardiman2230d ago

So M$ has finally released sales numbers?!?!

moegooner882230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Funny thing is that Septic actually wrote a piece about Sea of T demonstrating the power of the cloud , but not after it turned out medicore at best, he is pretending no hype preceded the release lol.

Silly Mammo2230d ago

@septic
SoT is now some small indie title with very little marketing or hype according to some on here? 😂 that revisionist history already in the works.

2pacalypsenow2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Sea of thieves was also touted as a game changer and a killer app for XBox which they hyped like crazy. SOTC was just a remake.

Razzer2230d ago

"SoT is now some mad mega title with gargantuan hype according to some on here? 😂 that revisionist history already in the works. "

Your April Fools post is three days late. Seriously......you are delusional if you really believe Sea of Thieves wasn't hyped to hell and back.

Knushwood Butt2230d ago

Some MS fans getting desperate.

Gazondaily2230d ago

"Funny thing is that Septic actually wrote a piece about Sea of T demonstrating the power of the cloud"

I didn't ? And what does that have to do with ANYTHING lol!?

Lol you lot call Ni No Kuni niche but SoT is this massively hyped and marketed title? How was it massively marketed? It's popular on twitch and sold loads but let's take away from it's sales because....??

You lot called The Last Guardian niche. No hype behind that ? When you lot started crying at the e3 reveal of it like it was the second coming of Christ but when it's sales fizzled out . ..."niche".

Niche is your go to excuse for everything Sony that doesn't sell. Anything MS sells...hype/marketing/fomo? Lol

IamTylerDurden12230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Jack

Microsoft hasn't released official sales numbers for Sea of Thieves. If you think the 2 million players is sales numbers you are sorely mistaken.

Septic

You have to be joking if you think that Ni No Kuni II was hyped anywhere near Sea of Thieves.

Ni No Kuni isn't even a first party game, it's a JRPG, and there was far less marketing.

SoT is a first party game and it was marketed as the return of Rare. Rare claimed it was their most ambitious game and it was a main feature of multiple E3s. SoT launched with the new service Game Pass to help push it. SoT was a heavy hitter for Microsoft while Ni No Kuni II 2 wasn't even necessarily the biggest PS4 exclusive released that week (MLB).

Ni No Kuni is a JRPG and Studio Ghibli game, it certainly is niche.

Razzer2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Right. Cuz MS didn't create an Xbox bundle just for Sea of Thieves. Oh wait.

https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

And they didn't have some massive 6 country contest for Sea of Thieves. Oh wait.

http:// http://www.kotaku.co.uk/201...

And they surely didn't create a limited edition controller JUST for Sea of Thieves. Oh wait.

https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

And of course they didn't create an entire line of clothing JUST for Sea of Thieves. Oh wait.

https://shop.seaofthieves.c...

Yeah....you keep telling yourself all that is typical for any old game and not marketing hype. lol

LP-Eleven2230d ago

Curious, what did Sea of Thieves sell?

Silly Mammo2230d ago

Lol Razer. 😆 You get a bubble. Facts are facts. But I'm sure the fanboys still will say it wasn't all Xbox hyped for at least a year leading up to its release. BEAST!!!

JackBNimble2230d ago

Wow, you guys sure are sensitive... Lol

Sunny_D2229d ago

Fuuuuuuu, someone call an ambulance cause Septic just received 3rd degree Burns. 😂

Clunkyd2229d ago

This is why the gaming community makes fun of these Xbox fanboys the most.
They're so insecure. LOL

JackBNimble2229d ago

Clunkyd
If you are referring to me, which I am sure you are. I would like to point out that I don't even own an Xbox, and my pc died and I have no plans on a new build.

So what platform do you think I play on? It ain't anything Nintendo I can assure you of that.

Dragonscale2229d ago

@septic, no that was according to ms for the past 4 years. Anyhow considering the brevity of xbone 'exclusives' sot was guaranteed to sell tbh.

ZeroX98762230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

@JackBNimble
Well it was released originally in 2005 ,then re-released as a HD collection in 2011, THEN re-re-released on PS4 as a remake.
I would say 430K of total sales in the first week is totally fine for a more than 12 years old title! Plus considering all of the game was already done and only needed new graphic assets, The total dev cost must've been low.

Goldby2230d ago

They rebuilt the game from nothing in a different engine. It wasn't just slap new textures on it...

ZeroX98762230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

No it wasnt just a "slap of textures" but it was surely cheaper than the first time the game was developped. No need to figure out anything story wise, gameplay wise, plus they already had assets to based their work on. Less hardware restriction than the first release too because on ps2 it was quite a technical feast. So it should turn a profit very fast with a lower unit sold count.
Plus they took the same studio who did the ps3 remaster, so already used to the base engine.

PhoenixUp2230d ago

@ Jack

VGC hasn’t even released their estimates for Sea of Thieves’ sales yet

Not bad for an old game that already sold over a million in the PS2 and PS3 era

timotim2230d ago

So much for gamers not wanting to play "old games", between this and Crash I think if the game is good, gameras will want to play it.

Gazondaily2230d ago

Indeed. Remake or not, it's obvious that you can't go wrong with the classics. Luckily Sony delivers on both fronts; old and new

Heelix2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

I just left a BC thread.

This is a perfect example here.
The old games are topping charts and selling, obviously this is a business opportunity for the companies.

I just hope this doesn't encourage them to limit compatibility on newer hardware. ps5 and co'.

_-EDMIX-_2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

Except this is not an old game releasing through backwards compatibility , this is a full remake

based on that logic you might as well say the sales of Final Fantasy 7 remake are because it's "an old game" despite ignoring it's a remake.

Once again this is not the original Shadow of the Colossus simply releasing this is a full-blown remake made in a completely different engine ie not the same game.

Activision made a remaster of Call of Duty 4 while still having Call of Duty 4 release through backwards compatibility which means they have nothing to really do with each other because you're not really talking about the same thing.

Developers are going to make remasters are remix regardless of backwards compatibility because the idea of somebody purchasing an enhanced or remake version of a game actually has nothing to do at all with their ability to play the older one I mean by that logic have you not figured out that PlayStation 4 has the original Final Fantasy 7 in HD on top of getting a full-blown remake? lol

So you're still not understanding the two don't have anything to do with each other? So you having the ability to play Final Fantasy 7 the way it originally released actually has nothing at all to do with a completed made from the ground-up remake....

AspiringProGenji2230d ago

Not a perfect example. Wake me up when a remaster kr a remake top the sales of Horizon, a new game. You guys are trying hard to push you BC agenda.

Nyxus2230d ago

It's not an old game, it's a full remake. That's the reason I rebought and played it, even though I already own it on PS2.

Death2230d ago

It’s a remaster more than a remake. Improved graphics, same story. FFVII is a completely new game based on the original story line and characters.

SuperSonic912230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

IMO SotC is different. The remaster sends a message to new gen of gamers.
That 3D game design was perfected during the PS2 Era.
Bluepoint says the game's design is still unmatched today even by modern standards.

When Shigeru Miyamoto and Eiji Aunuma played it in 2005 Miyamoto senpai said Twilight Princess will be the last Zelda game they will make for a long while.

Meaning SotC blew them away because Team ICO achieved the highest design quality even Miyamoto san can even think of.

AspiringProGenji2230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

This and other few classics are an exception, and yet this sales are very fall behind the sales of new games like Horizon. Everyone buys a new console for new games. Luckily Sony delivers mew games so with them they are no complaints with the remakes.

Nyxus2230d ago

It's not old though, it's a full remake. There's a difference.

IamTylerDurden12230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

There is a huge difference between a technical remake with all new assets and a port or "bc". The motivation to play SotC Remake, R&C remake, or Crash N Sane Trilogy is that they are classic games remade in todays standards. We are playing SotC as if it was first released in 2018 with modern technology, it's an enticing premise.

While bc is a nice feature, we are in the prime of this generation with great current gen games releasing faster than we can play them. I just don't see how gamers have time to play the same last gen games with antiquated visuals and tech over again. We are in year five of the generation, Ni No Kuni II, MLB The Show 18, Far Cry 5, and even the controversial Sea of Thieves just released. God of War is next month, then Detroit. Even Spiderman is about to announce, we are in the thick of it.

I'm not against bc, but i just think it is far more useful at the start of the generation when there is a dearth of new gen games rather than an abundance.

ILostMyMind2230d ago

SoTC will continue to sell for a long time. It's a remake of a remaster and PlayStation fans have played it several times.

Kiwi662230d ago

So in other words people will buy updated versions of a game they've played before

Kiwi662230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

@Goldby I'm just making the point that people are willing to play the game again even if they have played the original, regardless if it's a remake etc

mkis0072230d ago (Edited 2230d ago )

I wouldnt feel the desire for a non updated form of an old game. I dont need a new console for an old game

SuperSonic912230d ago

The games quality will trancend PS4 to PS5. Maybe PS6 will get another remake.

Very happy its selling well. I absolutely adored the original. Will most likely not play the remaster, but I'm happy it's selling.

oof462229d ago

@CrimsonWing69: Almost half a million physical sales for a remaster? Yes.

I can still hear the title screen music in my head after nearly 12 years. Loved every minute of it.

MrNinosan117d ago

I have no issues filling my time til DD2.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will probably me more than enough.
More terrified I won't be done in time.

DivineHand125117d ago

Try not to burn yourself out before the game releases. This is going to be a long and immersive RPG like the first one.

The games in this article are all great and I believe the people who are excited for Dragons Dogma 2 probably already played most of those games.

For now, I recommend you prepare yourself for long play sessions if you will be picking up Dragons Dogma at launch.
