How Sony Messed Up its TGS Presence

Kombo writes: For years, the Tokyo Game Show has been the one show on the calendar you can bet Sony is going to put on a performance. Okay, they may have had a few issues in the past (overheating PS3s) but in general, TGS is their best show of the year. They nearly always headline the keynote and usually announce something or other. This year, however, I can't help but feel that Sony isn't trying.

What a whiner. Sony owns about 10% of SE. They know whats going on between Square and MS I'm sure they have some say in the board room. Anything you hear from the media is pure speculation. I read the MS key note live blog. What did they do that was so amazing? Beside setting up a booth right beside SE. There is still a couple of days left to go. Let just see what happens.

Tgs aint over yet. Second off they have game showings with square enix on the 11th day of TGS, third off the only reason why sony doesn't have the rpg games is because they are investing money into their own first parties while microsoft is dishing out cash for ps3's exclusive.

Sony announced there would be no price cut to the PS3 - it's obvious they're in the "sink or swim" stage.

Meaning - they're going to let the PS3 try to survive on its own. Sony has a huge electronics portfolio - they already established Blu-Ray. They have TVs and computers. They're not going to chug any more money or effort into the PS3 until it thrives or dies.

Why would they. They have been out selling their direct competition (world wide numbers) all year. They don't need to push the panic button just yet.

MS on the other hand were losing ground steadily that is why they have price cuts across the board and are trying to secure third party DLC by spending tons of cash. They now have a sales spike going. Can they keep it going. Only time will tell.

Sony has already said they are ahead of their target sales by like 20percent. They have the strongest lineup of consecutive first party games ive seen in a long time. Sony's goal is to make the ps3 the main piece of your entertainment center. If you take a look at PS2 titles not many games go on and sell very well. Unless you have Final Fantasy in the name or Dragon Quest, well pretty much anything from Square-Enix, most Jrpgs sell average. The 360 have had decent Jrpgs(Not FF sale/review-wise) while getting some titles that will appear on both consoles. Sony has been lacking but is also getting some new franchises and new IPs, that we have no clue how they will fair against the standard which is Square-Enix.

Looking at the Original Xbox and what it was lacking, the Xbox 360 gets the Early Edge.

Jrpg have never been a weakness of the Playstation(it helps when you had 75% of market and monopoly on devs) while it has been for the Xbox. Really, how many of these jrpgs do we expect Final Fantasy like REVIEW/SALES?

It's easy to criticize current Xbox 360 Jrpg games because well, the PS3 hasn't got much out. The ones that are out are not considered anything special in terms of sales/reviews(If that is what most base their hate of a game on). Hey everyone and their momma is waiting for FFXIII, well Square-Enix is he Standard. For some reason the Standard has not been set, so we look at every other jrpg as average. Wait you'll see.

The xbox has disc read errors, overheating problems, makes more noise than than a hover and scratches discs when tilted 5° while running... "but the repair is free!"... say that again when your warranty runs out and you are looking at 3 red blinking LEDs. My PS1 still works, my PS2 still works and they will probably still work in 20 years, by that time not a single working Xbox360 will exist.

I have my PAL 60GB PS3 from 2007 an its as new as ever.

Well not really, it have some scratches here and there but I have never noticed any overheating, and it only crashed on me once with Pro Evolution Soccer 07 demo, and we all know how bad that game was...

The only time I'd consider one console "win" over the other is if the other one ceases to be supported by both the company and consumers.

I just read the Kotaku report that there seemed to be way more ppl in lines for the Sony related software the the MS related software (though MS did have some good showing though).

Sony's conference highlighted Hardware additions which seem to be in place to increase hardware sales. LBP and GT:Prologue Spec 3 bundles could potentially sell very well, though I will admit that GT5 really needs to come out now.

All-in-all, Sony showcased what they needed to, hardware, the queses to the software speak for themselves that ppl are still interested in Sony offerings.

Yes I'm disappointed that new software wasn't shown in abundance... I wanted to see Team Ico' new title, ZOE3, maybe even a Legend of Dragoon sequel (which Sony really need to do), but my anticipation for WKC rose from virtually nowhere to must buy. Quantum Theory looks like a nice distraction and could be a good game it it is pulled off well, the same goes for Demon's Souls.

Ultimately, the purpose for TGS was to show tangible playable titles that were in the loop for release. I think its highly possible that such titles from Team Ico, and maybe of ZOE3 is coming, are not in any form to have a demo build. There is going to be more software coming beyond what was just shown... and in all respects, what is confirmed for the rest of 2008 and for 2009 looks absolutely killer for PS3 users.

This article reflects a certain mindset that has permeated the game industry since the 360's launch. If Microsoft has a good system launch/system update/AAA game/press conference/news announcement/etc. Sony is expected to match it or else they "fail". It's like E3 all over again: Sony showed off far more games, and yet the FF13 going to the 360 is what everyone payed attention to. Sony had a much better conference, and yet because they didn't announce...oh...I dunno...Gears of War or Bioshock (oh wait) on the PS3, their conference didn't match Microsoft's.

Can't we have some fair journalism for once? I know y'all are enamored with Microsoft, but let's at least recognize that Sony has released the two most successful video game consoles ever made, okay?

Journalist will always (most of the time) be biased towards their home console, which in this case is Micrfosoft's console, the Xbox 360. Sony could be 3-400,000 units ahead in both hardware and software and they will still try to spin it.

I do find it amazing how this article instantly says failure to Sony just for not showing anything. Is that even considered losing?

Its simply illogical to judge a clear wiinner simply from one conference showing. If I remember correctly, The Playstation consistently outsold the 360(minus the weeks of the RPG sales spikes) in the weeks following the E3 event.

No one knows whats really gonna happen, so its not loical to concede defeat just because your competitor has more of just one genre. so what.

Sony has more platformers, but that doesn't stop Xbox from selling pretty well in japan and america.

In the end, however, I think Sony knows what its doing. Considering their lineup of games this fall and the exploding adoption of the blu-ray format, its almost as if Sony is giving the 360 a free shot out of pity for this holiday season, but dont quote me on that one. ^_^
