Super Mario Odyssey review: one of the greatest games ever made | The Mirror

As the latest instalment of Nintendo's core Mario series, Super Mario Odyssey outshines almost all of its previous titles and could possibly be the best 3D platformer ever made

I came to laugh at your comment.

the game is short, no story, easy to beat and pretty much play like every modern 3D Mario ever released aside from the hat but it's Mario. let's just give it a 10 and call it a day. that's pretty much all the reviews I've read so far

TrueMetal2407d ago (Edited 2407d ago )

It's very easy to make a long game. You can pad a game with boring side quest after boring side quest and then brag that it takes 50+ hours to beat. But what good is that?

Story? It's a platformer. Do you only enjoy narrative driven games? That's a shame. I like a good story as much as the next guy, but this is a platformer not The Last of Us or Bioshock.

Plays like every modern 3D Mario. Well that's what the game is. Mario 64, Galaxy etc are all highly regarded games. And it's not exactly a stale genre. People aren't pumping out AAA 3D Platformers like they are FPS or open world games.

If you paid attention to the reviews, you would see that there are lots of new features in the game. I never thought I'd see Mario in a city filled with regular people. The hat, as you put it, is an awesome mechanic. You can control all types of different creatures. I don't remember previous Mario games letting me control a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Games like Mario, Zelda and Metal Gear get 10/10s often because they are incredible franchises. Franchises that have been around for decades and yet continue to innovate title after title.

Reviews said it was short, had no story and was just a typical Mario game with a hat power up? I didn't see any of those lol, in fact it was the opposite of what you said.

A quote from IGN review:

"I’d spent the last 15 hours with a giant grin on my face, and somehow the climax put the perfect surprising and delightful exclamation point on the plumber’s latest adventure. This is another brilliant redefinition of the very platforming genre he helped popularize 30 years ago.
And best of all, even with the story complete, Odyssey has so much more fun to offer."

Notice what they said at the end? How long were single player games like Uncharted and Last of Us? What can you do after completing the campaign beside multiplayer?

There are even articles about the amount of content Mario O has after credit start rolling:

my kids have been watching the complete let's play of the game since the last 3-4 days and I was kinda forced to watch it with them as I have only 1 working TV at home at the moment. I already know what the game has to offer from start to finish but I won't spoil it here because I'm a douchebag.

but let's just say I'm not impressed like at all. I was not paying that much attention to the TV because I thought that it was just another old Mario games but I realized that it's Odyssey because of the hat. THAT is how similar it looks to every other Mario released recently and you guys still praise it like it's something you guys have never seen before! granted I'm never a fan but I can only tolerate so much of the annoying noise that plumber make every time he jumps.

and who said a platformer can't have a decent story? R&C has a decent story, how about Sly Cooper? and even Knack and Knack 2 have a decent story to tell. and I enjoy them all for both their gameplay and story but somehow for Mario, only gameplay matters? like all those other games don't have good gameplay? BS! and aren't you guys feel a little disappointed that Nintendo seems to think that all their fans need is another story about how Mario saves Peach? I would feel offended AF because it seems like they are taking me for an idiot who can only comprehend the same story over and over and over again!

and just don't give me that "the hat is an innovation" stuff. it is given for you to use in a very specific condition. it's not like I can control the t-rex whenever and wherever I want. you just can't. and now since Mario can use his hat as a weapon, how about we make almost all bosses use their hats as well? I mean like...WTF? the combat mechanic with the hat is so dumb and forced throughout the game! just call the game SM cappie or something and it would be more accurate to describe the game.

and the fact that Mario is now put in a city full of people amazes you THAT much? Jak did it on the PS2 when moving from Jak 1 to Jak 2 and 3 but just this gen Mario is finally doing it, you are amazed? WOW talk about low standards!

It's not short (I've put 40+ hours in and still haven't collected all of the Power Moons, which unlocks a new section) and it brings more new, creative gameplay additions to the Mario series than most sequels for any franchise does, but you do you.

Gaming sites always jizz when Mario and Zelda come out so this is expected. I am sure its a great game but Zelda Breath of the Wild has its flaws and we didnt hear about them from most reviewers and I suspect we wont with Mario, maybe it is a perfect game /shrug I own a Switch Day1 and like it a lot and have loved Nintendo since 1985 but Nintendo seems to get away stuff more than they should , imo.

Count_Bakula2407d ago

Yeah, I'm sure it's just a regular platformer with mediocre controls, but the reviewers are nostalgic and give like three extra review points because it's Mario.

big_dom_strikes_back

True. Donkey Kong was the 1st platformer ever made and it was that game that introduced Mario to the world.

I read your post with a deeply sarcastic tone. If that was the intention, very few people will get it.

Toadsanime2405d ago

I pointed out minor flaws with Odyssey in my review, including an issue with motion controls and occasional frame rate drops. I also didn't get along too well with BotW, so I didn't review it.

That doesn't make it a 'perfect' game - does a literally flawless game exist? - but it DOES make it worthy of a 5/5 score for me.

i just wish they included loot crates :/

Rebel_Scum2407d ago

Would be pretty funny if cappy was locked behind a paywall :p

And microtransactions and massive online multiplayer.

At least it's open world-ish.

:P

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.

The 7 Best Selling Switch Games of All Time

The Nintendo Switch has been an undeniable success for Nintendo, but which games make the best selling chart for the console?

GotGame818105d ago

Animal crossing came out the week the entire world shutdown. Yeah I bought it.

kevco33105d ago

Agreed. I think a lot of the AC: H sales have to do with early lockdown players!

I mean, I would've played it anyway. But I guess there's a lot of people who got into it because of the hype and their new found free time!

DivineHand125105d ago

Nintendo made out like bandits with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. It's the same game that was on the WiiU except they added 2 item boxes like in double dash.

kevco33105d ago

It's the Capcom method:

1. Add a new word to the end of the title and features that should've been expected first time around.
2. Charge full price for it.
3. Profit.

gold_drake104d ago

this is why i always say that Nintendo will always be fine. look at those numbers lol

and those are all first party games.
