PUBG will do in 6 months, what DOTA 2 failed to do in 4 years

With PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds now firmly at the top of Steam's most played games list, there is only two records left to beat - all-time peak player count and total hours played. While the former will fall in due time, the later record is just around the corner.

Wonder if this game will do better than the new Call of Duty, Battlefield 5, and Star Wars Battlefront 2 on consoles?

Telxvi2447d ago

It all depends on the marketing I think. I don't remember anything ever blowing up on consoles on its own, aside from Dark Souls maybe.

AspiringProGenji2447d ago (Edited 2447d ago )

I don't think so. PUBG just happens to be a trendy game similar to how Ark was the trend and now that Ark is gold, the hype has died. Not saying anything about the game itself but we have already seen trend games get on top then fall again

All those games you meantion will stil remain un affected, especially on consoles

Vegamyster2447d ago

The game has hit 10 million sales & continues to be updated just through Steam, i don't expect it to do this well on consoles but it should do very well.

I agree, it's incredibly successful now, but I just don't see how it's going to have the same longevity.

KillBill2447d ago

I think it is a bit different only in that a lot of hardcore CSGO players have switched over to PUBG. And we know how loyal they are to their game.

GamingCentaur2447d ago

No. It will be timed-exclusive on XB1 which I will severely limit its potential audience.

You may not know this but a huge percentage of the sales for PUBG are from Asian regions.

FITgamer2447d ago

Yeah, but will it be able to maintain it's user base as long as DOTA 2 has?

BlindGuyMcSqueazy2447d ago

If they keep fresh content coming.

killatia2447d ago

As long as they keep making content for the game then yes

Silly gameAr2447d ago (Edited 2447d ago )

Does N4G have a marketing deal with Bluehole?

TheColbertinator2447d ago

Perhaps. I like PUBG as well but people are treating it like the 2nd coming of christ. Or 3rd.

MegamanXXX2447d ago (Edited 2447d ago )

I know right. The game is decent at best

danny8182447d ago

A lot for my friends rave about the game picking it up when the X1 drops

TheColbertinator2447d ago

@danny

Not saying it isn't awesome but the game needs some work still. Being honest here.

Silly gameAr2447d ago (Edited 2447d ago )

@Danny

That's good. I hope they enjoy it. I might get it on my Xbox one when it drops. Just saying, N4G feels like twich with how much I'm seeing PUGB, and it feels like promo. I am glad that they are getting the support they want and deserve anyway., To me, it almost looks like Socom Light., with bigger areas.

GamingCentaur2447d ago

PUBG will find success on console but it will never reach COD-level success. Overwatch is a perfect example of this. Extremely popular on PC but on consoles it’s still way behind games like COD or Destiny.

Games like PUBG, which are made with PC-first, they never find extraordinary success elsewhere. Games on console needs be designed around console controllers and large TV screens. I’m sure Microsoft will help PUBG adapt but it will still be an uphill battle for the devs.

frostypants2447d ago

I think PUBG would be more fun on console. I much prefer gamepad but have to use mouse and KB on PC to be competitive.

Yohshida2447d ago

COD Level of success aka Initial high sales and almost no Players a few months later? No game on consoles ever had 1 Million concurrent players a few months after release. Its the biggest game of the year

MetroidFREAK212447d ago

Glad to see a game like this succeed. It is a fun, tense game. Looking forward to playing some more, and I will be getting the Xbox version as well.

Ambitious dream but sorry you don't make good RPGs. Just online co-op shooters.

ThinkThink1h ago

Not yet, but they can grow. Sounds like that's the plan. They have a new CEO this week as well. I can see they pushing helldivers 2 to other consoles, Mac and even high end mobile devices. The game could become a global force and sony can rack up their MAUs.

Eonjay56m ago(Edited 52m ago)

Sure for Helldivers. Surprised Sony doesn't put Helldivers 1 on mobile.... but in reality, I think Arrowhead is talking about creating original IPs that they own. What I question is how they will do this (while remaining multiplatform) without expanding. For HD2, Sony contributed a lot. If they do this by themselves, they are going to hire more people (which isn't a bad thing as long as its sustainable). I love that they are trying to 'stay small' but even when looking at HD2, you get the feeling that they were woefully underprepared to deal with the success they had. Even to today, it takes too long to get bugs addressed.

Another story said that players had stopped playing because of lack of new content. We have know about the new factions since launch but one doubts that they have the internal resources to get new content added at the pace they need to. If they are looking for the kind of success they claim, they need to invest in the resources that will allow them to attract and keep as many players as possible.

Ambitious hopefully y'all can achieve it

Being the new Blizzard in neither a compliment or a good thing.

CrimsonWing6915m ago

Not if those games are going to be GaaS.
