Well if 3DS can last 6.5 years going on 7 years next Feb then Switch should do relatively quite well in the long term

bluefox7552485d ago

That discounts the decreasing relevance of portable game consoles. As smart phones become better, they eat into the portable console market. Most people don't want to carry around 2 pieces of hardware.

DarXyde2485d ago

Some say exclusives don't drive sales, but I would say Nintendo's are absolutely a selling point for their hardware.

I don't know how handhelds will fair going forward but Switch is something of an anomaly. As long as they're pushing games that gamers old and new recognize and love (Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon) I have a hard time believing it won't be successful in the long run. Say what you will, despite a pretty bad announcement back in January, the device has really hit the ground running, even in Japan. That's great for people who love Japanese games because that'll inevitably lead to Sony and Nintendo working together (albeit competitively) to revitalize the Japanese market.

NotoriousWhiz2484d ago

The gamers that prefer controllers will always carry around at least 2 pieces of hardware.

DivineAssault 2485d ago

PS4 caught up with the 3DS in half the time.. Im not saying the switch is doomed but its possible the momentum dies rather quickly if the games and availability arent there

feraldrgn2485d ago

3DS wasn't doing very well until they dropped the price.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2484d ago

and that was only 6 months after launch. It been a success for over 6 years

TekoIie2484d ago

Very true. But we're seeing the Switch do pretty well with a price that people criticised as too high pre-launch.

Tapani2485d ago

I'm pessimistic about Michael Pachter's longterm success.

FallenAngel19842484d ago

@ blue

You seem to be neglecting that A.) Even with the increasing mobile market 3DS still sold close to 70 million and B.) NS isn't exclusively a handheld system, it's a hybrid.

@ Divine

NS obviously isn't going to outsell or outlast PS4, but it clearly isn't going to dramatically drop off anytime soon.

@ fer

And NS is doing even better than 3DS in the same timeframe without a price cut.

DialgaMarine2484d ago (Edited 2484d ago )

But it's still fallen behind Wii and DS in aligned launch sales. It was never ahead of PS4.

PhoenixUp2486d ago

One question I have is how would Nintendo react when Sony & Microsoft release their respective 9th gen consoles. Would Nintendo continue to trudge on with NS as its main system or would it get sidelined by Nintendo's next system.

I guess what really matters is how successful NS turns out to be in the long term.

Erik73572486d ago (Edited 2486d ago )

Well if 9th gen from Microsoft or Sony isn't a portable gaming device I think Nintendo won't give a damn.

Back to topic, I think switch will be great in long term. We have many more heavy hitters like Metroid and Pokemon easily 3 years + into it's life cycle

MrFisher212485d ago

I can already play my PS4 on my phone anywhere in the world with the Remote Play app. 1080p output. And it looks better on my phone then the Switch. And I mount my phone to my DS4. The switch was irrelevant before it even came out. So what is the big deal about it being portable??

TekoIie2484d ago

@MrFisher21

Forgive me if I'm extremely sceptical of the "anywhere in the world" part of that.

Never had your phone signal drop before?

The 10th Rider2485d ago

If I were Nintendo and I found myself in that situation, I would simply counter with an aggressive price cut.

We're in a bit of a weird spot right now with the jump to 4K. 4K uses up so much GPU power that if next gen goes for native 4K and launches in two years, it won't have much more power in the GPU than the Xbox One X does unless the consoles cost over $500. If next gen comes along in two years at $500 it'll probably have better ram, a slightly more powerful GPU, and a significantly better CPU. Best case scenario they launch a 1080p console for $400 and a 4K console for $600. That allows the to push the GPU without using it all for 4K, unless people want to pay a premium price for the 4K version of the console.

Now imagine if at the same time the Switch got a hardware revision priced at $250 with a bundled game. Better battery, slightly larger and better screen, etc. Also by then Nintendo will likely have sold 20-30 million consoles. Even if it's not getting AAA third party games it'll likely be getting some B-game and indie support in addition to Nintendo's excellent first party support. Pokemon, Metroid Prime, No More Heroes, Fire Emblem, and plenty of other big games will be out or on their way to the console. Even though it wouldn't be able to compete with the PS5/Xbox2 the fact that it'd be half the price of the other consoles would keep it as an attractive second option, especially since it will have plenty of exclusives and it works as a handheld. They should be able to ride that out another few years and at the end they shouldn't have any trouble selling 30+ million.

Liqu1d2485d ago

If the Switch is successful long term then I think they'll stick with the hybrid design. The lack of power could be a issue when Sony & MS release their 9th gen systems.

DarkKaine2485d ago

It's already facing issues with 8th generation games..

ninsigma2486d ago

We'll see. So far it has a a good variety of exclusive games that will appeal to different gamers and this should be running into next year. Beyond that it'll be interesting to see how it does.

Michael Patcher, failing to predict Nintendos demise since 2006

Cobra9512485d ago (Edited 2485d ago )

Why would he predict something we all know isn't going to happen? Nintendo has so much capital that they could launch several failed consoles in a row, and still stay afloat. But the Switch isn't a failure, is it? It's "their fastest selling home console of all time". The Wii made a ton of money for them too, before it fizzled out. The Wii U is their only recent overall failure.

MrFisher212485d ago

That comment basically states how Nintendo can afford to keep messing up due to still recieving our money. Not a good argument.

Prince_TFK2484d ago (Edited 2484d ago )

MrFisher21

As far as I know they had only messed one console up, the WiiU. The Wii made them money. The 3ds made them money. And now the Switch is seemingly a runaway success for them. So I don't know where your notion of Nintendo "keep messing up" come from.

Cobra was just making some example about how much money Nintendo has, and no way they will go out of business as most people on N4G want them to.

DialgaMarine2484d ago

Switch was their fastest selling home console in NPD at launch. Since then it has fallen heavily behind the Wii. No, it's stock issues either; if any console had legitimate stock issues, it was the Wii.

Officialxandr2485d ago

Michael Patcher, failing to predict virtually anything since ever.

Razzer2485d ago

From the same guy who said The Order would sell 5 million copies.

http://gamingbolt.com/pacht...

superchiller2485d ago

Why would you link to a gamingbolt article? That site is cancer.

Scroticus2484d ago

So is Pachter. Yet here we are.

Bjorn-c-blocker2484d ago

This is awesome. Patcher should never be listened to.

The Status of Every PlayStation Franchise

Sony owns a fair few iconic franchises - many dating right back to the original PlayStation. But while we’re pretty familiar with the likes of ongoing series such as God of War, Horizon, and Gran Turismo, there are plenty of PlayStation franchises that haven’t seen the light of day in a long time. So in this video, we’re going to be taking a look at the status of PlayStation’s many IPs, and checking in on when we last heard from them.

Status in one word:

Underutilized.

The end.

anast6h ago

Which ones should they utilize more?

BehindTheRows5h ago

Indeed. We hear this “underutilized” talk as if every old franchise should have a comeback or reboot.

I_am_Batman4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

When new IPs start looking like Concord, you can't blame people for wanting another Resistance or Killzone instead.

anast4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

J&D and Resistance are good ones. As much as I love these, though, I'm not sure they would payoff without an enormous marketing push. Younger gamers today do not have taste and the older gamers that would appreciate these might not be enough. But yeah, I would day 1 Resistance.

Hotpot3h ago

Well that’s just the consequence of consistently producing new IPs isn’t it. Not all studios can be or want to be like polyphony digital who made gran turismo all the time.

Abear215h ago

Here lies The Infamous Series; once a shining beacon of free flying, lighting bolt sniping, and wire riding amazing gameplay, it has been laid to rest and be forgotten for what seems like forever despite being loved by millions. Plot next to Wipeout across from NBA Jam.

Lightning771h ago

Still baffling they cancelled Twisted Metal, Factions 2 and Spider-Man Multiverse LS game but thought Concord looked good enough.

Chocoburger1h ago

Ape Escape, Parappa / Lammy, Gravity Rush, good times. Always hoping for them to make a return, or at least similar type games, such as the newly-announced Astro Bot, but one game isn't enough. Bring back the joyfulness of the 90's era of gaming.

Take-Two CEO Doesn’t Think AI Will Reduce Employment or Dev Costs; “Stupidest Thing” He’s Heard

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn't think AI will reduce employment or lower development costs, and calls it "stupidest thing" he's ever heard.

They already have AI trained to do coding.......

How he thinks it's stupid is beyond me, Especially since we see it happening in real time.

CS71d 3h ago

Company A has 300 employees and lays of 200 to replace them with AI to release the same quality game.

Company B has 300 employees and keeps all 300 but instead uses AI to release a game with dramatically larger scale, scope, complexity, short dev cycle etc.

Company B would release a dramatically better product by using humans + AI and consumers would buy the better game.

I actually agree with this concept.

Huey_My_D_Long1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

This is key facet. Its how the AI is used. It's actually is impressive as is and really would make an amazing addition to alot of people in their jobs, not just tech. It also has the potential for businesses to use to lay off large amounts of people, as much as they could to save money on labor. I hope too many companies don't go with the latter. But since usually companies are worried about bottom line over people...we will see some try and hopefully fail. But yeah, if its to help workers like in your company B scenario I'm totally down...Just scared Company A may be too enticing to some ceos and businesses.

Darkegg1d 2h ago

Value of AI and value of humans will both be increased with human-AI complex. Each, by themselves, will not be independently better than the other. Whether AI will ever be independent from humans is the fear question of humans, ironically because of our doing. At this stage, most of the doing is because of humans, not because of AI. AI is doing exactly that by our design, until we have failed ourselves with an AI development that went awry. The biggest take is that humans have only ourselves to blame when things become wrong, and we have to decide what is the ultimate goal with AI we want to accomplish. It would take a person with high morals and high ethics to make right of AI. I would not want businessman to decide what AI should do or what capabilities it can have. AI should be in the hands of people with high moral fiber, or those operating on love, kindness, and compassion.

BlackOni1d 2h ago

AI is SUPPOSED to be used as a tool, not a replacement. It's designed to do two important things artists can take advantage of immediately.

- Make the ideation/reference imaging process much quicker and easier (basically using it as a google search)
- Make mundane and time consuming tasks faster and easier so more time is spent on creation.

Unfortunately, what many have done is used it as a way to replace rather than supplement.

Einhander197223h ago(Edited 23h ago)

CS7

In the ideal world yes.

In the real world where companies have shown little desire to innovate and spent every effort to maximize profits the end result will be the same quality games (if were lucky) made by less people and more AI.

Company Real World: Fires 200 people and makes the same game cheaper using AI and the executives get record bonuses.

Edit:

Lets look at history, specifically auto manufacturing.

In the 70's and 80's the auto unions tried to oppose automation of jobs (robots) stating that they would take peoples jobs. And the people in charge who wanted to make more money said the exact same types of things that are being said about AI. But we can look at history and see that countless types of jobs were in fact replaced by automation, that was of course even compounded upon by computers.

The net effect was that the rich got richer less jobs were needed so wages were forced down by competition for the jobs that were left.

hombreacabado4h ago

that concept works in the initial beginning phase of AI but once AI learns and surpasses the knowledge and coding expertise of even the best human employee than this CEO will no longer need competent humans in that line of work.

Extermin8or3_3h ago

@Hue_My£D_Long

Yes but that is a choice then by massively increased productivity and this greater income and wealth and stagnating with similar levels of productivity and output and not creating much wealth. Usually the option that creates wealth prevails because a rising tide raises all ships.

You can already make your own SFX with text prompts now as well, of course it will lower development cost and time

WARNING WARNING ‼️ SARCASM AHEAD
Sure Strauss and robots didn’t take jobs from car factories.
Edit:Sad thing is he believes it and unfortunately he won’t be replaced for a long time by AI

senorfartcushion1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

He doesn't, he's just lying. These people lay people off so they can get bonuses. If AI takes jobs, their bonus goes bigger and the workforce goes smaller.

porkChop23h ago

Because he sees AI as a tool to aid development. He wants to use AI to help make bigger and better games in the same timeframe. Other CEOs want to replace devs with AI to cut costs and make lifeless games faster for a quick buck. Strauss has the right idea, this is how AI should be used. To extend and expand the capabilities of devs.

neutralgamer19923h ago

There will be few companies who will go overboard and try to replace their employees with AI tech. The ones that will make the most money will be the ones that utilize ai, along with their employee talent, to make the best product possible

AI could handle some of the most time consuming processes. To expediate the development, so in return, costing the publisher's last money end time.

Extermin8or3_3h ago

Not reliably they haven't. Coding done by ai is generally abysmal for all but the most generic tasks.

I think you mean candor, not intelligence.

If you take him to mean what he's saying at face value, sure.

I don't. And I think he's clearly lying.

romulus231d 3h ago

As long as it doesn't effect his inflated executive salary or his ridiculous bonuses I'm sure he's fine with it.
