My laptop that I use for non gaming purposes has 12 gb. Which seems to be the standard. So 9 isn't impressive. So I'm assuming it's 12 overall with 3 for os and the rest for games?

Most graphic cards, even the high-end ones top out at 8GB of graphic memory. You will have to get into the professional class of cards like the Titan Xp or gaming enthusiast class cards like the 1080-Ti before you start seeing cards with more memory than 8GB. And those two cards I mentioned cost $1,200[and up] for the TItan, and $700[and up] for the 1080Ti.

So yeah, 9GB of 12 total dedicated to games is pretty damn good. And it's ahead of 98% of the graphics cards currently on the market. It even has higher memory bandwidth than the 1080.

Because, I didn't want to spend an additional $400, when I just spent $500 on my XB1 and had limited time to game. However, Zivi is already willing to spend $400 on Scorpio, so another $100 isn't a whole lot. I did eventually get a PS4 (as I got family working there). Got me a super cool Darth Vader PS4 on employee discount (during the Holiday sale, Sony employee can tell you all about it) right before the PS4 Pro announcement. Yeah, I was disappointed. Should have waited 6-months.

@cupofjoe - and the majority of releases for a console are 3rd party. 3rd party multiplat titles far exceeds a consoles number of exclusive titles. So then you can say the majority of the games on Scorpio will look better. Obviously if you want the Sony exclusives then this won't bother you. But all the big 3rd party games should look and run better on Scorpio, much like how all the titles ran and looked better on the PS4 vs the XB1.

That's not true. I'm a PC gamer and I've said since the very beginning when we first found out about Scorpio's specs that it would be between $399 and $499. In those very same articles, which I can show you if you like, both Sony fans and Xbox fans were commonly predicting higher prices such as $599, $699 and even $799. It's only been more recently that people have been moving their predictions down more closely to my original prediction.

Yeah this just means instead of previous the 8GB, now 9GB out of the 12GB of GDDR5 can be used for gaming, which means they will likely continue tinkering with the hardware/software already in place but working on stuff like OS efficiency, UI, drivers, system allocation etc to give devs more to work with quite possibly right up until they are ready for mass production= SMART, and Microsoft has some of the best tech engineers in the world.

The actual assets won't be 4K. Very few PC games even give 4K assets. But Scorpio will work on 1080p screens just fine And if the down sampling is done right (no reason why it wouldn't be) it'll be a better image too than an og Xbox one at 1080p.

Yes, 4K assets are the textures applied to the geometry in the game, which are independent of the 4K resolution which is about the frame buffer. In addition to the 4K assets though, LOD changes on objects may happen farther out, and other things like better lighting or more grass on the ground, more hair, etc., will all be a real possibility too. Someone else also mentioned Supersampling as well, so there are lots of 1080p enhancements to be had with Scorpio.

I'm Gumby Dammit, I'm sorry but I believe that you're wrong. When you stick your face to a wall in a game and can see the pixels rendered upon it, you're staring directly at an art asset. If that texture is in 4K, it won't look as blurry even if it's being shown on a 1080p set. Like I said, the frame buffer should not be confused with the asset image quality since they are independent. Can you show me the quote where MS said that assets would be downsampled in addition to the 4K resolution? I'd appreciate that, thanks! 😃

It should work like the Pro for any 1080p game. 3 options: no added support (some don't get Pro benefits but most new ones do and it will be even more likely with 2 upgraded systems being out), Quality Boost (textures, framerate, etc), or Supersampling which works "sort of" like enhanced Antialiasing making things a little cleaner even on the same lower resolution. SS is pretty much the common upgrade for Pro owners especially if it doesn't specifically say what it is on the game. Nioh has probably had the most options of any Pro game yet but I didn't feel it really explained what they all did well enough (Pro's real weakness, there isn't any real specific "what it does" system after the Pro enhanced sticker on a box).

So people like me can still see benefits on their older tv, but they need a better way to present it imo. I played some on both my Pro and my base model though so it's still a nice $100 upgrade if you're trying to decide which to buy but don't own a 4K tv yet. Any benefits now and future proofing for later is great at that price point.

these people don't know wtf they're talking about... there will be no "down sampling" of assets... a 4kx4k texture is 4kx4k on a 4k monitor or a 1600x900 monitor... they'll use super sampling which can be thought of as the opposite of up scaling such as what your 1080p tv does with DVDs. Downsampling, btw, is an audio technique they use to lower the audio quality so it fits a smaller foot print.

Microsoft's sole focus on power is going to be their undoing. Right now Switch is selling gangbusters, not because it's the most powerful system on the market, but because it has Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. More power may have been a factor for the PS4 at launch, but that was almost 4 years ago. Unless MS is making a clean break with the past, I don't see how having the most powerful console is going to do anything.

Remember, right now the most powerful console on the market is the PS4 Pro and it's being outsold by it's weaker sibling, PS4 Slim by a margin of 4:1. More power is nice, but a cheaper price is even better.

I can recall 2013/15 MS had the games and people screamed resolutions and power. Now they're focusing on power and people scream games with E3 right around the corner. When MS comes out swinging they will say too little, too late, and it's not all about games. I can already see this one coming, they will complain it's too expensive despite typing on a phone costing twice as much. Every MS exclusive I would see comments like another Gears, another Halo, Crackdown cloud computer and DX12 jokes, Ryse is overrated, Cuphead looks uninteresting, Recore looks blah, where's the independent games, another Forza game, Tomb Raider will play better on PC and PS4, Killer Instinct is overrated, Titan Fall will play better on the PC, who's still playing Dead Rising? No they won't, not that much. All you people chanting "Scorpio! Scorpio! not long til it cometh!" are forgetting one thing: the Xbox "scorpio" is going to be a niche. The original Xbox one and Xbox one s systems out there in the wild are not going to magically transform into "scorpios", they'll still compose the vast majority of the configuration the userbase has, only a tiny elite will have an Xbox scorpio (or w/e they decide to name it eventually), so in the end developpers will STILL have to cater to all those og Xbox ones, which I repeat will be THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE USERBASE, meaning the Xbox one scorpio will not be allowed to show what it can really do, because MS is so adamant that it's supposedly just a hardware revision of the Xbox one, and not a new gen (since they're so adamant that gens are supposedly a thing of the past)

The only way for the Xbox scorpio to really unleash its true power will be to go independant, i.e. free itself from the burden that the og Xbox one will now prove to be, i.e. have games designed specifically for it which won't release on the original Xbox One or Xbox one S. But this would force MS to confess that they are effectively still releasing consoles as per generations and nullify their claim of "playing beyond generations". More problematic still, this would show that MS are capable of making a system and selling it at 500$ and abandoning it after only 4 years...

Yeah, I got a Samsung UN series 60in LED. I really like it, also got two 55in hdtvs so Im about to upgrade to another 4K TV upstairs. I will most likely get 2 Scorpio's too...Im spoiled because I hate moving my gaming setups around and I have limited time so I hate waiting for my wife to finish watching whatever that mess is she happens to be watching.

I picked up a 55" 4K Vizio M series for $600. Not what I would pick if you are looking at movies playback, but perfect for a gaming screen. I actually ended up with this and a curved 55" 8500 series Samsung at the same time. The Sammy is great for movies. You could absolutely live with either one though for both. I agree with what many say, it's the HDR that has the biggest impact. The only way you are getting HDR though is with a 4K TV. I built a 4K gaming PC to use with it and can tell you the difference between 1080p and 4K w/HDR has to be seen to be appreciated. I'm waiting for the Scorpio reveal to decide how much I want a second GTX1080 to run in SLI.

Well, I'm fine with both but for me personally Microsoft has released nothing that makes me want to buy a Xbox One. And the way they are going right now I might skip them this generation. The only games I was interested in were cancelled and really time is running out on this generation I would say 3 years more at the max before people will want the next gen of consoles to come out.

Well sounds like you just dont like the types of games experiences that anyone who follows gaming knows are going to make up the bulk of Xbox game library. Yes this has been a slow year but prior there are PLENTY of great Xbox games that are not on the other console, imo ps4s first 2 yrs was lacking but of course it improved, Xbox will of course do the same, but some will never find what they are looking for on Xbox.

Scalebound was a huge disappointment for me but again, if nothing interested you except *coincidentally the games that were canceled I just think you dont care for Xbox which is fine but I don't see Microsoft suddenly announcing a ton of jrpgs, niche Japanese games so Im guessing you will continue to "not be interested". Yeah skip them and save yourself the headache of false hope.

To each his own but hopefully Microsoft doubles down on the types if games they do best, that's what will really propel them forward not mimicking the competition just to get a bit more interest from those who will just stick with ps anyway.

I'm a fan of the same games Playstation fans say don't count. I bought my Xbox for Halo, Gears and Forza. I was pleasantly surprised with Recore which I bought as a Play Anywhere titles as well as Quantum Break. If you are an RTS fan, Halo Wars 2 has been a lot of fun. Most of my playtime is with third party games though.

To be fair I bought my PS4 for Uncharted, Last of Us and GT. I was very happy with Driveclub after the game was completed, but disappointed Sony shut Evolution down. Bloodborne was another great showing by From Software. I haven't opened Horizon up yet, but it's obviously a fantastic new IP. Killzone was ok and I thought Infamous was better then expected. I passed on No Man's Sky, Knack and The Order. I didn't care for Until Dawn (still a good game), but I thought it was the best game for PSVR.

It looks like they nailed the hardware with Scorpio. The features and services have been fantastic and keep getting better. The only thing they have left to do is open their checkbook and start buying exclusives. I'm not a fan of the practice, but it seems to be what Playstation fans want them to do the most. Hopefully they make some more first party games as well. E3 should be interesting to say the least.

I'm not getting too hung up on native resolution. If they need to upscale and target higher frame rates that is perfectly fine. Sony's 4K solution is perfectly valid as well, the only real difference should be in fps between the two consoles and which is native more. I've been saying native vs upscaled on Xbox One and PS4 has been overblown and the same holds true with Scorpio and Pro. What gamers see should be incredibly difficult to distinguish. The only way we will know what the fps is will be having some sort of fps counter. If Microsoft does indeed display this, it's 100% for bragging rights. The only time I know my fps dips on my PC is if it drops below 30fps. I can lock in 1080p@60fps on anything, 4k@60 is very uncommon. Most games run in the low to upper 30's with all settings maxed. I don't see much of a difference between 40-60fps, but I am getting old. If anyone wants to argue it I will believe you.

Wow in the last month I've put my Xbox games on hold. I purchased some tittles I never played before when they had their big backward compatibility sale. Like fable 2 and 3 and fallout 3. Waiting to play these 360 games and some Xbox one games I'm sitting on with Scorpio.

It sounds like games will definitely run and play better and be an overall better gaming experience with games loading faster and stuff.

Sony did very well this gen so far, but very good chance MS will finish strong!... They have a heavy hitting console that will be able to compete for four to five years on the way. All MS needs is to go build a larger library of quality first party games and they will be right back to being head to head with the Playstation. I think this E3 will show MS means business in gaming.

True, but MS does have a very established core of popular first party titles to build on. It's not as if they are starting from scratch... also, IF Crackdown plays as well as described that will have a good chance of becoming another high end property...Sea of thieves has tons of potential too, So MS is still looking good. Also, if there is one thing MS has a lot of it is money. If they want to , they certainly can produce older, popular IP's that have not been seen in a while as well as invest in brand new ones.. Lots of variables, but lots of potential too.

it's still 12 gb originally they were going to use 4 gb for the os and 8 gb for game developers.
it's now 3 for the os and 9 for developers still 12 gb total.
