Mike Ybarra, Scorpio now has 9GB RAM available for developers

“We’ll keep tuning Scorpio to empower creators to share the best versions of their games. Unlocked extra GB of RAM for them, now 9GB of GDDR5”

slate912531d ago

E3 is going to epic. I cannot wait!

4Sh0w2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Mike Ybarra:
"Games that don’t use the full 9GB, the rest of the RAM will be used as a cache (making things load way faster, etc.). All games = better."
https://twitter.com/XboxQwi...

-Love how much work they are putting into getting the most out of Scorpio.

MegamanXXX2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

It better be for $500+ dollars premium at its finest just a couple more days for that premium price. I see a price cut incoming for the Xbox one S. More reason to buy an Xbox one S for cheaper since it will play the same games as the Scorpio.

christocolus2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

@Septic

Nice.

@naruga

That video is so lame. Ms is only making the console better. Don't you want Scorpio? Lol

@4show

Amazing. Can't wait for the unveiling .

gangsta_red2531d ago

@naruga

Can't be mad at anything Predator.

AngelicIceDiamond2530d ago

Cool news I wonder how much 1 gig will make a difference. Don't bite my head off now I'm just curious.

mikeslemonade2530d ago

Won't matter. Ram was never a bottleneck.

Skull5212530d ago

Damn thats more RAM then the PS4 even has period. Scorpio is really taking gaming to somewhere we've never been before. If the rumors are true that Battlefront 2 is indeed running at native 4K and 60fps, that will be mind boggling.

MegamanXXX2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

That Jaguar laptop cpu though 🤔☹

LastCenturyRob2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

@ narugo...its Scorpio not scorpion.

As if Scorpio wasn't overpowered already, MS gone and give it more! Scorpio is the gift that keeps giving.

Xbox powered by Phil Spencer! XD

Simon_the_sorcerer2531d ago

If the price is right, then I'm going to buy one.

Kribwalker2531d ago

Gonna be amazed on Sunday. Can't wait

gangsta_red2531d ago

Extremely curious to see what they bring. They have been behind the 8 ball all gen so far. Let's see if they can break out with some excitement this sunday.

XanderZane2531d ago

Jesus... 8GB GDDR5 RAM is usually plenty for most games. What are developers going to do with 9GB? I'm pretty sure DICE developers are jumping for joy now. They can make Battlefield 1 and Battlefront 2 4K / 60fps on the Scorpio now.
It just keeps getting better and better.

MegamanXXX2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

What about first party developers? No luv for first party exclusives

TheCommentator2531d ago

Jez Gordon says Battlefront 2 IS 4K/60 on Scorpio already!

XanderZane2531d ago

@TheCommentator
Good news. I didn't even know that.

@MegamanXXX
I'm sure we'll see them at the E3.

ULTp0ltergeist2531d ago

Let's calm down and wait for Sunday ok buddy.

If Scorpio can play PC games that will be a game changer.

Lennoxb632530d ago

If Scorpio could play PC games AND use verified mods would be welcome as well. I know mods might be wishful thinking though.

XanderZane2530d ago

Most of the popular PC games will end up on XBox or Playstation platforms anyways.

B1uBurneR2531d ago

Just in Mike Yabahaba tweeted
"Exclusives these nutts, 9GB available to Devs bitches lets keep the party going! Whoaa!!!"

No seriously 3rd party devs should die hard compete to max out the system resources.

babadivad2530d ago

This will be spun as a negative, I guarantee it.

Number_92530d ago

Look no further than the comment above yours.

DanteVFenris6662530d ago

My laptop that I use for non gaming purposes has 12 gb. Which seems to be the standard. So 9 isn't impressive. So I'm assuming it's 12 overall with 3 for os and the rest for games?

babadivad2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

Most graphic cards, even the high-end ones top out at 8GB of graphic memory. You will have to get into the professional class of cards like the Titan Xp or gaming enthusiast class cards like the 1080-Ti before you start seeing cards with more memory than 8GB. And those two cards I mentioned cost $1,200[and up] for the TItan, and $700[and up] for the 1080Ti.

So yeah, 9GB of 12 total dedicated to games is pretty damn good. And it's ahead of 98% of the graphics cards currently on the market. It even has higher memory bandwidth than the 1080.

Bigpappy2530d ago

No one told you either. LOL..... Let it be our little secret: Scorpio has 12GiGs too. But it is faster than what you have in your laptop and your laptop can't use 9Gig for gaming.

if MS could really reach 399$ on this machine it would be a crazy achievement (not that it won't be great at 499$ as well).... man i am seriously considering the scorpio now...

donthate2531d ago

I wouldn't let $100 hold me away from having the best console gaming experience personally. Just give in. It will feel oh so good with True Power!

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

nX2531d ago

So you define the "best console gaming experience" by it's power instead of it's games?

Then a PC might be the right platform for you.

donthate2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

andrew:

Because, I didn't want to spend an additional $400, when I just spent $500 on my XB1 and had limited time to game. However, Zivi is already willing to spend $400 on Scorpio, so another $100 isn't a whole lot. I did eventually get a PS4 (as I got family working there). Got me a super cool Darth Vader PS4 on employee discount (during the Holiday sale, Sony employee can tell you all about it) right before the PS4 Pro announcement. Yeah, I was disappointed. Should have waited 6-months.

I get that you are salty about Xbox being the most powerful console, and now seek to find other reasons to justify your own purchase, but you don't need to. Just be happy with your decision and stop looking across the pond wishing otherwise.

Bruh2531d ago

@andrewssquall

Love how the best console experience comes from exclusive titles YOU enjoy lol, totally plausible argument. Personally aside from the TLOU II, think I'll enjoy Sea of Thieves more than any of those other titles, especially because I'm a very social gamer.

gangsta_red2531d ago

@NX

Except donthate specifically said "best console gaming experience". Meaning the best CONSOLE experience, you even quoted it yourself.

MagicBeanz2530d ago

Specs make the best console gaming experience now? LOL! You guys haven't seen one single game for this thing yet and you're already claiming its the best. Its ok I get it, I can appreciate good propaganda when I see it.

2530d ago
Neonridr2530d ago

@cupofjoe - and the majority of releases for a console are 3rd party. 3rd party multiplat titles far exceeds a consoles number of exclusive titles. So then you can say the majority of the games on Scorpio will look better. Obviously if you want the Sony exclusives then this won't bother you. But all the big 3rd party games should look and run better on Scorpio, much like how all the titles ran and looked better on the PS4 vs the XB1.

remember not so long ago people thought it had to be $700-$1000 lol. $499 is an amazing price, $399 would be a true mic drop

andrewsquall2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

We have stated time and time again it will easily be 399 after the CPU reveal. 200 quid will be the mic drop as it is the key price it will only be highly successful at.

A 12GB GDDR5 console for $200? What are you smokin?

Clunkyd2530d ago

Those were PC gamers stating that because they were so insecure.

starchild2530d ago

@Clunkyd

That's not true. I'm a PC gamer and I've said since the very beginning when we first found out about Scorpio's specs that it would be between $399 and $499. In those very same articles, which I can show you if you like, both Sony fans and Xbox fans were commonly predicting higher prices such as $599, $699 and even $799. It's only been more recently that people have been moving their predictions down more closely to my original prediction.

That's a big If but who knows. If it's $499 I'll probably still be buying one day one but hopefully they prove why I should. I'm hoping every One on the show floor is a Scorpio build so we can get a ton of hands on impressions on top of the more atruxtured conference showcase. If they managed to do that it would go a long way on getting info out there better.

CrimzonRazor2530d ago

As long as its under a grand ill pre order two of them so the kids will leave mine alone

Mulando2530d ago

just don't expect $399. Theres a lot of hype about this number in recent days. I still expect 499-599€ just because they said it's a premium product. $399 would be nice, yes, but that's not where I see a premium product

This is going to be very interesting

81BX2531d ago

So is this 9GB believed to be the final product then, or is this dev kits? That's cool we would have that option

XMarkstheSpot2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Final product I would believe. Doesn't the Scorpio dev kits have like 24gigs or something?

2531d ago
4Sh0w2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

81BX

Yeah this just means instead of previous the 8GB, now 9GB out of the 12GB of GDDR5 can be used for gaming, which means they will likely continue tinkering with the hardware/software already in place but working on stuff like OS efficiency, UI, drivers, system allocation etc to give devs more to work with quite possibly right up until they are ready for mass production= SMART, and Microsoft has some of the best tech engineers in the world.

Edit, ahh you beat me to it ImGumbyDammit

soulsx2531d ago

xbox scorpio dev kits have 24 gb ram gddr5 :) so 9 gb on final produckt is verry impresive value.

dcbronco2530d ago

XMark they do but dev kits are running other programs underneath the game so they need to space to get it going on the level available on a home unit.

zivtheawesome2531d ago

Yep.
Hey i have a question, i am thinking on getting a scorpio (depending on the price), does 4k assets affect 1080p screens?

2531d ago
annoyedgamer2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

You cant play 4k content on a 1080p screen. You better hope developers release Scorpio patches to increase graphics on all resolutions or you will need to go out and buy a 4k screen.

ninsigma2531d ago

The actual assets won't be 4K. Very few PC games even give 4K assets. But Scorpio will work on 1080p screens just fine And if the down sampling is done right (no reason why it wouldn't be) it'll be a better image too than an og Xbox one at 1080p.

2531d ago
TheCommentator2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Yes, 4K assets are the textures applied to the geometry in the game, which are independent of the 4K resolution which is about the frame buffer. In addition to the 4K assets though, LOD changes on objects may happen farther out, and other things like better lighting or more grass on the ground, more hair, etc., will all be a real possibility too. Someone else also mentioned Supersampling as well, so there are lots of 1080p enhancements to be had with Scorpio.

I'm Gumby Dammit, I'm sorry but I believe that you're wrong. When you stick your face to a wall in a game and can see the pixels rendered upon it, you're staring directly at an art asset. If that texture is in 4K, it won't look as blurry even if it's being shown on a 1080p set. Like I said, the frame buffer should not be confused with the asset image quality since they are independent. Can you show me the quote where MS said that assets would be downsampled in addition to the 4K resolution? I'd appreciate that, thanks! 😃

Eldyraen2531d ago

It should work like the Pro for any 1080p game. 3 options: no added support (some don't get Pro benefits but most new ones do and it will be even more likely with 2 upgraded systems being out), Quality Boost (textures, framerate, etc), or Supersampling which works "sort of" like enhanced Antialiasing making things a little cleaner even on the same lower resolution. SS is pretty much the common upgrade for Pro owners especially if it doesn't specifically say what it is on the game. Nioh has probably had the most options of any Pro game yet but I didn't feel it really explained what they all did well enough (Pro's real weakness, there isn't any real specific "what it does" system after the Pro enhanced sticker on a box).

So people like me can still see benefits on their older tv, but they need a better way to present it imo. I played some on both my Pro and my base model though so it's still a nice $100 upgrade if you're trying to decide which to buy but don't own a 4K tv yet. Any benefits now and future proofing for later is great at that price point.

Cueil2530d ago

these people don't know wtf they're talking about... there will be no "down sampling" of assets... a 4kx4k texture is 4kx4k on a 4k monitor or a 1600x900 monitor... they'll use super sampling which can be thought of as the opposite of up scaling such as what your 1080p tv does with DVDs. Downsampling, btw, is an audio technique they use to lower the audio quality so it fits a smaller foot print.

i mean its pretty simple, they spent close to 30 billion in acquiring activision, they thought they'd make it bk no problem, and that didnt happen.

its just shit that because of MS's miscalculation alot of people lost their jobs.

Jingsing3h ago

This is exactly what many people said would happen including the CMA and FTC. Lies lies and more lies and they allowed a $69 billion buy out to happen.

gold_drake3h ago

oh yeh it was 70 billion. that was my bad haha even worse.

thesoftware7303h ago(Edited 3h ago)

gold,

You can't be serious, right?

Do you think that MS thought they would make 80bill in a year & Half? They haven't even released titles under MS yet, lol.

But in fact, that A/B revenue is already paying off, look at the last earnings call. That $80 billion is long-term money, my guy, no sane person/company would think they would make that back in any short-term situation, it's a long-term investment.

Let's play silly then. If MS's reason for laying off staff and closing studios was due(which it really was not) to the A/B deal, tell me what Sony's reason was for past studio closures, the recent 900-person layoffs, closing Sony London, shutting down Dreams, and closing Japan Studio? Zipper? Psygnosis? cuts at all their internal studios.

Keep in mind, you are claiming MS's reason is because of the A/B deal; please explain Sony's reason.

Hofstaderman3h ago

You actually still defending them? Sheesh.....

gold_drake3h ago

this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt.

and of course not, but im pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. they didnt, and closed off some studios.

its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case.

romulus233h ago(Edited 3h ago)

(It really was) due to the Activision Blizzard deal and the loss of physical sales due to gamepass. You keep bringing up Sony in all your posts about this, stop deflecting and trying to change the topic, this is about MS and what they are doing.

BehindTheRows3h ago

Has nothing to do with Sony. Stay on topic.

notachance2h ago

once in a while you see someone too invested in their make-believe console war that everything happened has to be connected to said war…

a bit of banter between fans is normal, this crusade you’re doing now isn’t.

Chevalier2h ago

Wow idiotic. You bring up very old closures not that there haven't been recent ones from Playstations, but, seriously stop deflecting. This has NOTHING to do with Playstation.

Does Playstation got $3 trillion behind them and daddies wallet? No they don't so stop making a fool of yourself.

Xbox has never been profitable really and they just keep losing money so between their worst hardware sales, terrible 3rd party sales and now terrible 1st party sales.

Gamepass numbers that are no longer being announced shows their numbers after 3 years of missed targets has flatlined. Plus their recent gains up to 34 million were ONLY because they folded Gold members in too. Absolutely take your idiotic rhetoric out of here. Keep on topic without deflecting.

Drake,

"this is not a sony vs MS debate. dont make it something it isnt."

You are correct that it's not an MS Vs Sony Topic, but when exaggeration and imagination mix from a one-sided social group, similar examples are needed to ground radical thoughts; in this instance, the example was that shutting down 3,4,5, even 6 studios during a restructure/ buyout/acquisition is not some anomaly(it can suck) that has to be dissected or spell doom and gloom.

"But I'm pretty sure they thought they'd make more money after the deal. They didn't, and they closed off some studios."

But they did make more money, a lot, actually; the last earnings call showed a huge growth in profit, almost all due to A/B revenue.

"its pretty insane to think there is any other reason for the closure of studios in this case."

The fact that they did make money, kinda throws this out the window, and besides, you don't wake up and say, hey let's close a studio, you look at the output, you look at the dev as a whole, the long term and short term, you weigh it against all other studios and goals, you keep key members, ect..then you close if they are the weakest links...which by MS analysis they were.

Again, I will make a small Sony comparison, just so some of you can understand and see past the bias; Insomniac, ND, and Bungie have made some of the best games ever created, yet Sony saw fit to cut jobs in every of these studios, even tho Insomniac & ND are the biggest producers of PS games, leagues ahead better than Tango and Arkane, yet, they saw cuts, mind you, while being the TOP produces of PS first party. They were told to cut costs, and more jobs may be on the line, and Bungie is being threatened by a hostile Sony takeover. Put that in perspective, as I know that layoffs and dev closures are different, but if the best of the best is getting cut off, it is less than surprising, that lesser studios are closing.

@Cheva,
My response fits well with your comments as well. You even went on to prove that the dev closures are not just due to A/B acquisition. Then you point out Sony has less money than MS, inferring that MS should keep devs open that they see as lesser earners, while Sony having less money makes it okay to close them. lol...it doesn't work that way.

gold_drake51m ago

im not reading all of that. u have ur opinion, i have mine.

thats rly it.

but this aint sony vs ms.

ApocalypseShadow31m ago

You're trying to compare a 100 billion company to a company that has 3 TRILLION worth. SIE has to live or die on their own. And in turn, PlayStation has helped the main company again and again. Sony has to balance out what is working and not working in the company.

While Xbox has Daddy Warbucks footing the bill to keep the platform afloat. They have been bleeding money from Nvidia hardware in the OG Xbox, the RROD fiasco, the attempted 2013 DRM nonsense and the lies about being the most powerful console in the world and the losses of paying out millions to prop up a service hoping it catches on with enough subscribers to justify its existence.

They're not comparable if Xbox isn't allowed to live or die by its actions. It's subsidized. Revenue isn't profit. And if they were profiting on their own, they wouldn't be closing developers. If they were profiting, they wouldn't need Daddy Warbucks spending 80 to 100 billion buying up 3rd party publishers to sustain a loss leading platform.

They stopped announcing game sales, stopped announcing hardware sales, stopped announcing game pass subscribers, they are putting games on their competitors platforms but you're telling us that they are doing great even after killing jobs and closing developers at Xbox.

Stop drinking the Kool aid. You're drunk.

anast3h ago

They are going to use AI for a large portion of the game development process. Upper management need bonuses and the shareholders need more money. So, people will lose their jobs.

Skuletor3h ago

Maybe they were already using AI to make business decisions, which would explain why they closed Hi-Fi Rush's studio, then said they need more games like Hi-Fi Rush not long after that announcement.

Crows903h ago(Edited 3h ago)

They shouldn't have bought any studios. Some is okay...but they went on a shopping spree...stupid

Einhander19722h ago

The better question is why did Microsoft buy publishers for a service they were subsidizing they knew couldn't support.

And why are so many websites trying to make people feel sorry for Microsoft instead of truly criticizing the fact they are closing studios and killing jobs that would have been fine if Microsoft themselves hadn't gotten involved.

Quit feeling sorry for Microsoft and start feeling sorry for the industry and the all the gamers who are actually losing out.

THIS IS MICROSOFTS FAULT.

RNTody2h ago

The first thing that happens after any major acquisition or merger is a consolidation of the whole new portfolio, which includes cutting any excess, bloat or portfolios that don't fit the larger MO of the big boy. So far, it's been par for the course with Microsoft and that's why gamers have been so against this acquisition. Tango Gameworks is the beginning. You think Microsoft wants to pay to keep small timers like Ninja Theory in business?

There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Microsoft will improve any of these studios, but plenty to suggest that they will get rid of what they don't need and hold onto the IP. The real agenda of the acquisition was always to acquire The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Fallout, Call of Duty, Candy Crush etc. that will create millions in passive revenue stream for Microsoft regardless of where the games release. Microsoft simply wants their cut.

Because of Games Pass Microsoft has no interest in investing in new IP which is risky and requires creative talent they can neither nurture nor manage. Game Pass has also not grown in the way Microsoft expected it to, even post acquisitions. Therefore the logical thing to do, without serious money makers to release, is to cut as much cost as possible.
