Rami Ismail on what a Muslim perspective can add to games

AltChar caught up with Rami Ismail, independent games developer and co-founder of Vlambeer, best known for Nuclear Throne and Ridiculous Fishing, during last week's Reboot Develop conference in Dubrovnik. Rami has some interesting thoughts on how cultural backgrounds can affect a game.

Rolling carpets, fishing not drunk and losing wars... Clearly something only an Arab/Muslim can relate.

Clearly no Western Dev could make games like that, such diversity, such multiculturalism, such tolerance!

meka26112567d ago

Or the games can have suicide bombers and throw gays off of building rooftops, this is so damn stupid. I prefer games where religion is made fun of.

spicelicka2567d ago

And here folks we see the ignorant and biogeted side of the gaming community.

Talks about homophobia then implies Muslims are suicide bombers lol, nice one.

meka26112567d ago

Don't care what you fuckers say, Islam is a horrible religion, I hate all religions, but most nowadays don't throw people off building for being gay, or have decency police to make sure women are covered up. So no fuck that I don't want religion in my games, bad enough it is stuffed down our throats in major media.

spicelicka2567d ago (Edited 2567d ago )

Regardless of the problems, it has nothing to with this article wtf are you talking about? You obviously didn't read the article, the guy is talking about cultural influence and he happens to be a Muslim. Can the word "muslim" not be mentioned without people like you being triggered? Ironically your mentality is quite reflective of fundamentalists.

spicelicka2567d ago

He miscommunicated his point but your comment is unwarranted. From what i read he's just referring to cultural influence.

Any developer working from their cultural references will show that in the game design. The Witcher 3 was developed by Polish developers and depicts mythology, geography and culture from Northern Europe. Japanese developers clearly show Japanese cultural influence in this game. This developer is only saying his Arab culture is reflecting in his game similarly, simple as that, nothing to do with tolerance.

I love how as soon as the word "Muslim" is mentioned, the comments immediately started throwing around buzzwords like "diversity, multiculturalism, tolerance", "suicide bombers, gays" etc. when none of these words are mentioned in the article.

Why do you think that is?

@big_dom_strikes_back

Well said, it's quite sad indeed.

Auron2567d ago

Add to games? More like remove from games like the symbols and fire temple music in zelda ooc and get kauto chojin pulled from the shelves ect, ect...

Erik73572567d ago

I mean that's the oppressive goverment . You don't have to take a hard look at the world and understand those practices go way beyond a countries religion.

Is that perspective screwing over console gamers by taking their money and not fixing the games? If so then no thanks.

Great news it shows that Nintendo intends to continue developing ports of AAA games to its next gen platform

H915h ago

Buying studios from embracer now is a great deal, they must be dirt cheap at this point, Nintendo is a opportunist, they wait until someone fall so they get their best deal

OtterX9h ago

That is some serious brain gymnastics you have going on there. 🤔

H96h ago

I didn't do any gymnastics I can assure you, honestly I don't know why you think that, not hating I seriously don't see why you think that

ZeekQuattro4h ago

Yeah I don't know where that came from. It's rare for Nintendo to flat out aquire studios. Guess they were trying to be edgy but why flex on this studio. 🤣

banger8814h ago

I hope someone buys Piranha Bytes, their future isn't looking good right now. I love their RPGs, they're janky as f***, but they have heart and soul.

Relientk7711h ago

Nintendo saw the Mortal Kombat 1 Switch port and were like, "Yeah, these guys are worth acquiring."

You can't make this crap up lol

Profchaos10h ago

Mortal Kombat 1 was never going to port well I'm sure they told wb it wasn't going to work but wb wants that sweet sweet 140 million install base

In the end wb approved the project cleared the milestones and allowed the product to release

SonOfOsiris6h ago

Yeah this guys ported MK11 which is great, Hogwarts Legacy which is great, and MK1 is now ok, play it every day

It's the why we close servers after 2 years, why we re-use the same assets every year, and why we bundle our game with enjoyable microtransactions.

neutralgamer199220h ago

Running digital casinos in every game

Rebel_Scum14h ago

Re-using assets is not a bad thing tbh. Development is all about re-using code, assets and components.

neutralgamer199220h ago

Can you please focus on delivering enough quality content to justify the $70 asking price? While I appreciate the idea of over-delivering, it's essential to ensure that the base content itself is worth it. I have concerns that GTA6 might have less single-player content because most of the focus seems to be shifting towards online play and microtransactions

Inverno19h ago

The sleaze oozes out of these gaming CEOs faces. It's honestly disturbing how distorted people look when you've realized how money obsessed they really are. He gives off "in one ear and straight out the other" vibes.

jambola19h ago

I really don't get it
like
do they think anyone believes what they say?
is it that being in charge surrounds you by so many yesmen that they get deluded into thinking everyone is like that?

JackBNimble8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Well if you look at the last 10 years you will notice there wasn't as single paid dlc. Every update was free whether you want to complain about sharkcards or not.

They're going to make billions on this game especially if they keep the same formula as last in regards to updates.

Good-Smurf18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Selling Shark cards and removing content are not exactly "good news for consumers" lol.
The last time they released any DLC worth playing was 15 years ago.
GTA V is so broken and unbalanced that people would rather do stupid cringey stunts with than do heists.

JackBNimble8h ago

I'm sure the player base would disagree, and gta5 is still being supported, much longer then most games, after all I bought gta5 day 1 on ps3....
