Will Insomniac Learn With The Resistance 2 Public Beta?

Ever since Halo 3 had its exceedingly popular and successful public beta testing phase, everyone else has been trying to replicate such success, if only for the potential marketing benefits it could pose due to the extra hype. However, so far Sony's attempts haven't necessarily gone to plan. Will Insomniac succeed where others have failed?

from what i seen the Private beta didn't have any lag. But the Public is going to be in a Much wider scale (ratio about Private testers 200: 10000+ Public testers) But IG knows the big jump that is going to happen and hopefully it would work out fine.

What this author fails to realize is that even Halo 3 had serious problems the first week of its release. It's the nature of betas. And MGO's beta turned out to be pretty great once they got the kinks fixed.

Resistance 2 may experience some initial kinks when the beta starts, but I have no doubts that it will be nothing short of amazing.

Resistance was about the awesome gameplay and story, as Gears is gameplay and graphics. That being said, Resistance's graphics are no slouch.

The private beta is what they will use to improve the game. The public beta is nothing more than for people to experience the online. Public beta is comming out in October and that is not enough time to implement the changes if there are any to the release copy of the game which comes out during November 4th. ALTHOUGH they could use the public beta to create a patch which they may release shortly after the game is released!

actually public betas are often used to stress-test servers so you dont have crappy online play for the initial weeks after the game is released (e.g. Super Smash Bros Brawl or Castle Crashers )

I absolutely loathe how beta's are now hyped out now. A beta is suppose to be were you see how everything works and do balance issues. Nowadays its a OMG i'm gonna base my whole opinion about this game when is not balanced, they're getting servers up, and getting everything ready for the actual release of the game. Now its just beta beta beta beta lets get in this and see how it plays when if fact its suppose to be a bug finding glitch repairing build the infrastructure phase.

i'm quite mixed about beta making their big debuts on consoles lately .
Patching was already bad enough ...

Well of course fixing a game's issue is pretty interesting as a new console feature ... but it also has lead consoles games to the same ill approach than PC : release of games in however state they are , with the promise of patches to fix things , later down the road .

beta and patches can be convenient for sure , but i just wish the worst aspects of those would have remained on PC .

i understand what your saying about betas, while a beta is not the official final product, it does represent the basic gameplay of the final product, if some one completely changed up the game play on you and you didnt like that then you would be able to judge from the beta.

If they doesn't get it right the first time around it's understandable. I have my suspicions that it will take around one month post release to fix the server lag and balancing of R2. This is forgivable judging by that they are breaking new ground in online and co-op gaming =)

Sony has been waiting for this day to come ever since late 2007. Sony has already forecasted what coming out 2008 holiday season in 2007. I am very hope that the Server and technical spec are in order.Sony knows that:

MGO will hit the server hard in 2008.

Socom will hit the server Hard in 2008 .

LBP will hit the server very Hard in 2008 .

R2 will hit the SERVER EXTREMELY HARD in 2008.

I have faith in Sony and that every game will be virtually lag free in late 2008.

MGO isnt on the PSN remember, its Konami's own servers (which is why its quite sh*t).

I rekon LBP will hit just as hard as Resistance, especially when people start downloading/uploading new levels in the hundreds of thousands/millions.

But Resistance 2 will be just as bad with its online co-op campaign and huge online.

ye im trying to convince people the huge changes R2 has from R1, like the cutscenes and story instead of that woman narrating, huge online modes and just all round better game.

One of the main things i didn't like about R1 was the music! it was really boring and got repetative, music can really make something you play twice as good and exciting or it can make it just boring, even if what your playing is great.

Thats 1 thing i hope they improve on

From what I can tell the beta seems alright.

From the leaked videos, it seems a little boring, but that may be just because of the people leaking it not wanting to give out too much.

Hopefully it will be fun like R1's multiplayer.

was the mussic an dthat stupid woman. besides that the only thing that botherd me were the guns and the way the guns moved, it felt so linear and stiff and set.
i also made the mistake of playing cod4 before it.
resistance just didnt feel very next gen. at all

They said sony has copied Halo in making betas public. the warhawk beta was released long before the halo 3 beta was packaged in Crackdown... i think they just mis understand that beta's for multiplayer games are meant to fix problems the devs may not have catched. beta's are necessary and since both the 360 and the PS3 are so heavily based in the online gaming market their 1st second and 3rd party developers have a new way to bring in users to do betas because of the online platform set up by both Sony and Microsoft. it's something Both Companies looked ahead and saw, which would in turn yeild better results for games that are heavy in Online gaming. thats what beta's are for, not to see who copies who so this article fails.

A game doesn't have to have halo fanbase to be successful, all it has to do is sell well and be received well commercially. It seems the success of a game has to be selling up there in halo numbers to be good. when we all know very few games hit those numbers.

Fail article fail article, for Insomniac being the first 3rd generation developer on the PS3 gives them all the success they can get, They have 2 games over a million sold and out of those 2 one of them has hit just alittle over 3 million...

all this beta will do is insure that the game performs well in multiplayer since and online co-op since the story is a given. and the resistance fanbase will eat this up so it'll be another 3 million sold or more.

No, the article states that Halo 3's beta was the first to have a large amount of hype revolving around it and since then, betas for games have had much more media attention. It didn't claim that Halo 3 was the first beta to ever happen, nor that Sony copied anyone.

Konami have many more years experience dealing with online than Insomniac and they've sold more games than Insomniac could ever hope to, yet they still didn't prepare properly and had problems. Companies should simply not be having problems with bandwidth issues during betas and they shouldn't need a beta to indicate the level of usage they should look to expect.

so they were no stranger to it and the last 3 ratchet games were hugely successful online titles and they were great. as well. so know what you're taking about. it solidifies even more why insomniac has done so well online now with the resistance franchise. 40 players online was no simple task and took months and months of dedication. konami may have sold more games than insomniac because the company is bigger and does games across the all platforms so you rattle on for nothing, insomniac is still the most prominent developer pushing the online functionality with it's games more than any other developer on the PS3 right now. Not konami, so.... your little history lesson fell flat. and my response to copying was geared towards the first few lines of the article.

Insomniac is a vet, so they were smart in doing a beta so they wont have to worry about having issues with online, thats why the resistance had a strong online following and a huge community.

Not quite.

Resistance was their first proper online venture, as Ratchet only tested the waters. Tools of Destruction didn't even include it, so the last 3 titles haven't included online. While the titles were hugely successful offline, not many people really played the online modes. So I'm not quite sure why you're saying they were hugely successful online titles.

Prior to Resistance, Konami had been doing bigger games online. Pro Evo (Winning Eleven) was exclusive to Sony prior to this generation and dwarfed the online coverage the Ratchet & Clank games had and not forgetting the original Metal Gear Online that came with MGS3: Subsistence.

Plus, I think it could be argued that MAG will push the PS3's online capabilities a little bit further than Resistance 2.

I trust Insomnaic and the beta will be of fair enough quality. They have their own staff play the game daily and they do 40 player rocket launcher tests. Thay will be taxing on a server.

Graphics are nowhere near as great as those in Gears 1, and Gears 2 already looks leagues better than the original.

The gameplay is OK, but felt too random. There was no structure or strategy to anything. Too many players. Felt like an old PC game with 60 guys running around.

Looks like Gears is still king of the MP arena.

i dont agree at all. i felt gears was great but the multiplayer couldnt compare to that of resistance. i had fun with both tho and the sequals are both looking good. howefer i probably will enjoy resistance more only because of the different co-op campaign and the bigger online but both will be awesome.
