Final Fantasy XV Fails to Impress at EGX

David Game has never doubted Final Fantasy XV. Even with the Platinum Demo. But after EGX's demo, he's unsure.

FF15= Style over substance.

GrimmyReaper2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

Not even.
I played a demo about a week ago at a convention. Not only is the gameplay weak, the game also looks very unappealing and the frame rate is awful. No anti aliasing, poor textures, choppy fighting animations and the frame rate goes below 30 constantly.

I feel like this one is gonna leave a lot of people dissapointed.

I hope it's gonna be awesome, but after the 4 demo's and experiencing the same problems over and over again, my expectations are very low atm.

Darkwatchman2761d ago

That's why I'm glad the ps4 pro is coming before FF15 releases. That'll be the only competent version of FF15 until eventual PC and Xbox Scorpio versions get announced a year or so down the line

Ogygian2761d ago

You played a pre-release version, hence why it isn't optimised yet.

Optimisation tends to be the very last thing devs do, once they have their features complete (so they know what they need to optimise for).

And then there are patches which will fix any remaining concerns post-release.

Nitrowolf22761d ago

@Spartan

You do know that the game was originally intended to come out a couple days ago

The demos that they're showing isn't going to be very off from the final build That was supposed to be released and still is. It's the whole reason why it got delayed in the first place because they don't want to release it in its current state and wanted to make up day one patch that would fix all that.

We will just have to wait and see

trooper_2761d ago

Seriously?

That's not good...

Harkins17212761d ago

Confirmed you didnt even play the demo. Reports of the game being smooth as butter but the camera needs some tweaking.

pumpactionpimp2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

Truthfully the series lost me after 10. I tried 12, but it just moved away from so many elements I liked about previous games. So if this does great or bombs, I could care less. Final fantasy has evolved in to something that no longer feels like final fantasy to me.

NXSwitch2761d ago

The core ppl at S left to form MonolithSoft & things haven't been the same for FF since. FF15 took some ideas from XenoBlade C & X but still falls flat. The only game I want S to make is a full 3d remaster of FF6 which is the godfather of all FF games & I think that we will never ever see that day come along with a real Chrono Trig 2.

NapalmSanctuary2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

@pumpactionpimp
The thing I love about 12, being my 3rd sp FF (FFX, FFX-2), was that it disappointed me so much that it got me to play the ps1 FF games, where I discovered my favorite one (fFF9). FF12 isn't actually a bad game, it is loads better than anything that has come since, its just that its story doesn't have the charm that the classics did and a lot of that has to do with how they shoe horned in Vaan cause of focus tests. Bosch was originally the main character, that would have worked a whole lot better. The battle system was decent but out of place in a mainline FF game.

@toddnepeon
The core devs from Squaresoft left after Sakaguchi was pushed out and they formed Mistwalker studios.

bouzebbal2761d ago

@Darkwatchman
this is originally a PS3 game.
I have a worse feeling about this game than i had with FFXIII.
I'm starting with Worlds of FF.. FFXV will wait

andrewsquall2761d ago

Didn't you see all those comments here when the game was delayed like "oh well, if it makes the game better then I'm okay with this" and "as long as the game is optimised better than, yeah, delay it", don't you see, all of a sudden the game can't be an unoptimised mess now.

GrimmyReaper2760d ago (Edited 2760d ago )

@Harkins

Why would I lie? Did you also ready the last part?

I really hope it's gonna be awesome, but just forget about all those CGI trailers. The audience has played several different demo's. Early builds were said to be optimized as well in the future. We are now at the point where the game is gonna launch next month and even the latest demo's have serious frame rate issues, bad textures, very noticeable pop in, no anti-aliasing and long loading screens.

The demo I played was about 2 months before release (actually 1 until they pushed it back another month) and it took 2 min to load an open desert area and still had all the problems mentioned above. The only thing that was slightly better were the shadows but that's because in the Platinum demo, they seemed to be something of an early PS3 game.

Again, I hope all that is fixed, but seeing how these problems were mentioned since the first demo, you'd think as the final showcase demo on stand, they'd have all that fixed. Remember, the game ships in a month!

Godmars2902761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

You want cybermen? Cause that's how you get cybermen!

And still, what you said has nothing in regards to what was said here.

-Foxtrot2761d ago

I'm worried because I was going to get the big expensive edition but sure if it's worth it. Not just this preview but I've seen others which have said similar things.

I don't want another FF13 where people will just ignore the negative stuff because they've waited so damn long for it.

Nara_shikamaru2761d ago

Uhmmm... The negative stuff is all people talk about

Godmars2902761d ago

Why get the big expensive edition when it looks like the game's being made into an event? With season passes and everything.

AdonisIsBeast2761d ago

Episode Duscae was great, haters of this game are going to be disappointed

k2d2761d ago

I'm already luke warm to this game and regard it as a no buy at this point. This preview didn't change that fact much.

phoenixwing2761d ago

The author claims the pacing felt off possibly due to having no sound while playing the demo. I think that the level of the characters will play a role in speed. Also equipping noctis with a speedy weapon may do the trick.

dgukmgl2761d ago

I'm hopeful that level progression will help in that regard. In the moment, it just felt like a sluggish action-RPG for me. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but it wasn't the sound necessarily so much as I feel maybe when all of the pieces are in place the pacing will make more sense :) thanks for reading phoenixwing.

phoenixwing2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

When it comes to final fantasy I read the articles and your welcome. As for the sluggish part you could try to press/tap the attack button to feel more action instead of holding it down as many people do. I find more enjoyment in doing that instead of auto attacking (at least in the duscae demo). May not be efficient but feels way better psychologically.

afg4everpsn2761d ago

Ive been following this game really closely and Ive been only impressed by how its coming along.. gameplay looks smooth with tons of mechanics , magic is limited but is much more effective with elemental damage.. graphics are getting better.. story looks amazing,

Segata2761d ago

Tons of mechanics like literally holding the circle button and nothing else on the controller as it auto fights enemies? The combat was beyond shallow.

Adrian_v012761d ago

How is that any worse than clicking through menus to do the same?

Also there's warping, dodging, changing weapons to combo and change pace, link attacks, special attacks, enemy weak points, magic etc. But yeah, it's button mashing...oh no wait, it's button holding...or what was it now?

cash_longfellow2761d ago

Every FFXV story has that one guy, lol!

NeedleEye2761d ago

The combat is as shallow or as deep as you want it to be really. Most people probably played it just like you and didn't have really good experience. Those who actually spend some time figuring out all the mechanics discovered the combat to be actually quite deep for a old build.

Anyone who think this battle system will be shallow should check this guys platinum demo videos. It's a really good showcase of what you can do in the game when you get familiar with the mechanics.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Ignore the music.

Koor2761d ago

Are you one of those guys who'd rather have turn-based and you know.. Just press X? I've played both demos and I know that is not how the fighting works. There's lots of things you can do to make the fighting much more diverse than that.

afg4everpsn2761d ago

No... you have the ability to give orders in combat to your allies .. you can summon, use magic, perform special moves (aerial dodge, armbringer attacks, teleport).. you can perform link attacks as well.. thats in addition to holding the circle button

Harkins17212761d ago

So you havent seen anything since TGS 2014? Hold O will not get you to win. Try doing that in any of the demos that have been out it wont work. Keep bitching.

dgukmgl2761d ago

I'm glad you've enjoyed your time with it afg4everpsn. It just rubbed me the wrong way, but the environment I played it in factored in to that a lot. I'm still excited for the positives you've mentioned. It's become a cautious optimism over time :)

sullynathan2761d ago

When you actually play the game, you know the gameplay isn't smooth and finicky at best.

Segata2761d ago

Adrian_v01

Ys series actually has depth. Many RPGs not turn based from Japan have actual real depth to it.

Adrian_v012761d ago

Final Fantasy XV has depth too. Imo Tabata made a mistake by trying to make the game appear easy. You can choose to play the 'hold button to attack - hold button to dodge way' but that's on you, not the game. Besides the combos you get that way there are moves and combo breaks you can perform by combining the dodge and attack button with directional input (at least in the Duscae and Platinum demo there were). Also the option that dodging right before the attack doesn't consume mp. To me achieving such skills in battle feel very rewarding. The game is nowhere near shallow in mechanics, it offers the choice to be shallow, but that's on the player.

Segata2761d ago

Failed to impress me in the 2 demos I played. I went form really excited to feeling this was another shallow experience when it releases.

dgukmgl2761d ago

I'm still hoping it pans out. There's a lot to like about it visually and Tabata has directed great stories in my opinion. I hear you though Segata. It definitely won't be bad, but it might just be okay.

Clown_Syndr0me2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

I was excited to play it, now im much more excited to revisit FF12.

@Goldby Great point, that really began to appeal to me after watching it on the big screen whilst queuing for CoD. It's more a Final Fantasy than 15 that's for sure.

Goldby2761d ago

World of Final Fantasy for me personally

indysurfn2761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

@Goldby and CLOWN_Syndr0me Stop it! I didn't need a reminder that I have to wait another three weeks!

Goldby2761d ago

The stacking is soo cool and @Indysurfn

WORLD OF FINAL FANTASY!!!!!!

3 more week for both of us man :)

Mulando2761d ago

Yep, this this no FF, it is just another game-type SquareEnix tries to sell via the FF franchise.
After all those changes to the original fight system, there is nothing left of FF. It is now just another action rpg.

And the demos didn't impress me ether. Graphic standards were high, but there was nothing in the demo did fit with another thing (just my opinion). I missed the love for details in the demo. The world just feeled so empty.

Adrian_v012761d ago (Edited 2761d ago )

Clickbait and misleading title.

dgukmgl2761d ago

Sincerely, Adrian, what would you have preferred the title to have been? I'm curious as my intention was not to mislead anybody. Final Fantasy XV failed to impress me at EGX. Perhaps that would have been better? Reworded to explicitly state that this opinion applies only to myself? Though I'd thought it being labelled as an opinion piece would clear up any misunderstandings. My apologies if you felt misled :)

Adrian_v012761d ago

Sincerely, dgukmgl, there is a big difference between Final Fantasy XV failed to impress at EGX, and Final Fantasy XV failed to impress me at EGX. I opened the article because I read about rather positive responses to the game at the event. Especially when browsing the news on my phone I don't check whether something is an opinion piece, news or whatever, I go by the title. Your title is in fact misleading, presumably with the goal to get more clicks.

Clown_Syndr0me2761d ago

Were you there? Myself and everyone i spoke to felt the same way. It was very poor.

Eamon2761d ago

I wasn't there. But I played the Duscae demo extensively and I thoroughly enjoyed it. From what I can see from all the recent footage, the gameplay isn't that different, so I am not so worried.

I think the reason people were unimpressed is because FF15 is a 50-hour game and they were given a demo that's in the first 1-2 hours, so obviously most of the neat abilities gained from leveling up will be locked thus making your playable character feel quite shallow.

Of course, it could be down to you not liking the battle system itself. That makes your opinion subjective to taste rather than the gameplay itself being lame.

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?

Final Fantasy XV Review – A Royal Road Trip

Gary Green said: With my fondness for (most) Final Fantasy games and my side goal of finishing off games in my collection with loose ends, a return to Final Fantasy XV seemed inevitable. It also serves as my third Final Fantasy platinum trophy after VII and VIII, a reasonable substitute since Final Fantasy IX is nigh on impossible to master.

Final Fantasy 15 director reveals why he left Square Enix, and announces he's working on 2 new JRPGs

Final Fantasy 15's director has revealed why he left Square Enix back in 2018.

Hajime Tabata famously resigned from Square Enix two years after Final Fantasy 15 shipped in 2016. In a special livestream at the time, Tabata announced his decision to resign from the company, cancelling three of four new story-focused DLC episodes for Final Fantasy 15 in the process.

FF15 is like FF13 its subjective people either like it or hate it.

raWfodog143d ago

I liked it. I haven’t played the royale edition yet but I’ll get around to it one day.

gold_drake143d ago

no no, 15 wasnt trash.

15 had a tremendous difficult development.

FinalFantasyFanatic141d ago

I really believe 13 was better put together and more complete than 15 ever was.

EternalTitan142d ago

Found the pathetic troll.
How is your jobless life going?
Dot worry, you will never get a job or a girlfriend haha!

Hofstaderman143d ago

Man inherited a train wreck and was expected to release this game in under two years after it spent a better part of a decade in development hell. At one point there was even plans to make FFXIII Versus a musical. He did what he could.

TheColbertinator143d ago

I didn't care much for XV and I always wanted the original vision of Versus XIII but I think the dev team did what they could to salvage the project

Inverno143d ago

And yet people still blame him for the game turning out the way it did, rather than SE for the horrible mismanagement of 13 and Namura for being overly ambitious.

Dwarrior143d ago

Whatever the behind-the-scenes went on over the many years, at the end of the day it was a radical change in direction that I could not go along with. Also why I never bought 16.

gold_drake143d ago

this is also why Sakaguchi (spelling) left.
