Bethesda has remastered the wrong game

IM PLAYIN:

"Before I kick off into an article which I’m sure will ruffle a few feathers, let me start off by saying that I love Skyrim. In fact, Skyrim is one of my faovirte games, like, ever. It’s in the top five, for sure. So I am incredibly excited for Bethesda’s remaster, which I’m sure will be every bit as epic as the original."

Yeah it's Oblivions 10th Anniversary they should have done something special

Eldyraen2887d ago

It's also Skyrim's 5th. I almost expected another 11/11 but that's being reserved for Dishonored 2.

nitus102887d ago

I have never played Morrowind and I that may be the best choice for a remaster from my perspective. The problem is many people have played Morrowind and having looked at the graphics I do think that a compleat graphics overhaul (read expensive) may be needed.

I have played both Skyrim and Oblivion and graphically Skyrim is just so much better although gameplay-wise I liked both. I did find that traversing those Gates started to become a bit of a grind and if you did not set up your attributes properly at the start of the game then the game got almost impossibly harder unless you reduced your difficulty which IMHO is akin to cheating although I did make the game harder when I had high magic as well as buffed weapon and armour.

Having a 1080p Skyrim for my PS4 would be nice but I am not going to rebuy a game I have spent hundreds of hours on. Great for people who have never played the game before although I do suggest that to really enjoy the challenge start at normal or one level higher and don't reduce the difficulty (ie. wimp out) every time you hit a more difficult creature which can easily be overcome if you just level up or get weapons and armour.

nowitzki20042886d ago

@Solid

Morrowind deserves a full remake.

generic-user-name2887d ago

But Skyrim can (just about) get away with being remastered but Oblivion would need a complete overhaul, it's gameplay has not aged well. And I'm speaking as someone who thinks Oblivion was 100x better than Skyrim. But Skyrim makes more sense and I understand why they did it.

Would pay many cash for an Oblivion remake.

Testfire2887d ago

As someone who never played Oblivion what in your opinion made it better than Skyrim? It's in my backlog of games to play for sure though. Right now I'm finishing up Dark Souls and also Divinity Original Sin.

thekhurg2887d ago

@testfire

Oblivion offered a little more freedom in terms of gameplay, spell creation, magic weapons/armor, etc.. Just like Morrowind offered significantly more of those freedoms than Oblivion did.

With each elderscrolls game, Bethesda has taken away features and toned down the amount of character customization that the player can do.

Testfire2887d ago

@thekhurg, thanks for the reply. Morrowind is definitely on my backlog list as well. Isn't Skywind supposed to be coming soon? Can't wait for that.

sullynathan2887d ago

Oblivion is worse than Skyrim in nearly everyway.

generic-user-name2887d ago

@Testfire

Many reasons, one reason is because Oblivion was my first Beth game ever (you'll find people will pick their first Beth game as their favourite a lot) so everything it did felt new and blew me away.

But one area that I don't think anyone can deny is that Skyrim had REALLY shallow guild questlines compared to Oblivion. The Dark Brotherhood was my favourite but the Thieves Guild was a close second (the final quest for the Thieves was superb). I would have literally paid full price just for the Dark Brotherhood stuff and that was like 10% of the whole game. So I was ridiculously hyped for Skyrim once I learned the Dark Brotherhood would be returning but man was I disappointed, it wasn't just them though, all the guilds seemed way shorter and lacked a real sense of progression in Skyrim. Even the quest journal was simplified, in Oblivion it was like your character was writing a diary entry after each step in a quest that you could read and refresh your memory with, in Skyrim it's "go here, kill this".

Oh and the ability to create your own spells in Oblivion was also very cool. I still like Skyrim loads, it's main quest line is probably better than Oblivions and it's combat and visuals were much improved and I do plan on getting it again on PS4 but Oblivion is just miles better for me.

Rachel_Alucard2887d ago

@Testfire

The quests offered a lot more creativity and were way more varied. I can give you a summary of all the problems with Skyrims dungeons/quests in one comparison

Oblivion: "Help! A gang of women are robbing the men of the town of all of their belongings! Why don't you go down to where they "persuade" people, try getting them to invite you, and then we'll catch them off guard."

Skyrim: "Help! A gang of women are robbing the men of the town of all of their belongings! Why don't you go down to this dungeon full of Necromancers/Dragur and get the key thats stored in the chest at the end of the dungeon. Then we can enter their house and catch them off guard."

Practically every quest is, "Go to this dungeon full of Dragur and open the chest at the end" with shallow room for anything outside of that. Not to mention skills, abilities, spells, classes, factions and much more being removed or dumbed down to some kitty pool levels of depth.

Also, just look at the steps required to join the mages guild in Oblivion.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Ob...

It was a long and monotonous journey but you actually felt like a mage trying to join the school. They even give you a quest to go get wood out of tree to make a staff for you, plus all the ranks you go through trying to eventually become arch-mage, instead of becoming arch-mage after 4 fetch quests to dungeons and never once having to cast a single spell.

Bahamut2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

They just need to remaster Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim and release them in a pack together.

nX2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

"just" three of the biggest games ever created, right? :D
If anything, Morrowind would be the one that deserves it the most.

nitus102887d ago

I don't disagree with you but have you considered how much a pack like that would cost to make? Skyrim would probally be fairly cheap to remaster but Oblivian and Morrowind would be progressively more expensive. Also Bethesda would also have to make a pretty good guess as to how many people would purchase such a pack.

I am not saying a remaster of all those game would not sell but Bethesda would have to weigh he total cost to remaster and test (they are all massive games) against total sales.

Bahamut2886d ago

@nitus10

I doubt a simple remaster of these games would be a major hit to them. Especially after all of us start buying it. They could take a pack like that and sell it for like 80 bucks and most of us would still buy it.

raWfodog2887d ago

I'm thinking that Skyrim remaster would require less work on their part than the older ES's.

nX2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

Skyrim also has the least benefits, they should've waited with it until the new consoles arrive.

hirobrotagonist2887d ago

I'd love an Oblivion remaster, but they'd have to do a lot more work than they did on Skyrim. Namely, making the character not look like potato heads for a start

ProjectVulcan2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

Skyrim got more love but Oblivion was just the better game for me. I loved Oblivion. Never felt that for Skyrim. Oblivion blew me away, it might have been because it was one of the first true 'next gen games', coming out literally just a scant few months after Xbox 360. It was by far the best early title in 360's life, it was amazing whether you got it on PC or 360.

It was impactful even for me as a PC gamer because you did need a bang up to date expensive PC to get Xbox 360 level visuals when the game launched. Oblivion had nearly all the bells and whistles on 360 (HDR enabled + 2xAA, albeit at 1024 x 600) and you needed at least a £300 ATI video card like an X1800XT to get about the same experience, when you could buy a premium 360 and the game for the same £300!

Forum_Pirate2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

But oblivion is like, not good. The actual RPG systems are deeper, but they don't actually add anything.

Like in Skyrim, there is 1 questline per guild with 1 ending.

Like with Skyrim, the story is a poorly executed with boring characters and consists primarily of combat and offers little to no opportunity to roleplay.

Like with Skyrim, many of the dungeons are quite obviously Copy/pasted many, many times.

Like with Skyrim, Enemies scale to your level (in fact it's worse in Oblivion) and it sucks the tension and feeling of progression out of the game.

Like with Skyrim, the world is not put together with thought for things like trade routes and how the people in the world would actually have to get around which means it feels like a themepark instead of a world

Like with Skyrim. even if you *wanted* to turn the map markers off and actually have an adventure instead of being lead around by the nose you simply have no way to navigate the world.

Like with Skyrim, any lock can be unlocked at any time simply because the player is good at the minigame instead of because the character has a skill they can use.

The "Special" thing to do with Oblivion would be to remake it from the ground up so it's actually an RPG instead of an action game parading around in an RPGs flayed husk. Come to think of it, that's what they should do with SKyrim too.

Forum_Pirate2886d ago

See, thing is, you can disagree with my opinion that Oblivion is bad, but the things I stated (the people often complain about in Skyrim but seem to overlook about oblivion) are simple facts and not subject to your opinion.

TheSaint2887d ago

Agreed, Skyrim is too fresh in the memory, a remastered Oblivion would be amazing.

Though with how buggy Oblivion was I expect they were too scared to try.

nuckfuggets2886d ago

they shouldhv given us TESO freeeeee

JackStraw2886d ago

nah. they should've remastered the game that sold worse. makes a lot of sense from a business perspective.

Cy2887d ago

They need to wait until Skywind is almost done then serve a C&D and steal all their assets.

FastRedPonyCar2887d ago

They can't. The Skywind team is literally building the game from the ground up. Every model, every square inch of the land, every rock, tree, recorded dialgue, etc. Everything is being done from scratch. It's essentially a total conversion mod.

Bethesda can't legally do anything but pat the guys on the back, tell them good job and probably offer some of them jobs.

2886d ago
iiorestesii2887d ago

Morrowind will get the remake

Tankbusta402887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

Oblivion, Marrowind, daggerfall all deserve to be remastered before Skyrim (of course I am sure that would take more work, hence why Skyrim is getting the remaster)

Bobafret2887d ago

I think Daggerfall would look a tad rough even with a remaster, it's 20 years old.

TheFirstClassic2887d ago (Edited 2887d ago )

It would pretty much have to be remade from the ground up. Might as well make a new tes at that point.

Gorilla_Killa_X2886d ago

I wonder how much space Dagger fall would take up on someone's hard drive if it was completely overhauled to meet current gens graphical fidelity. That map was massive. And it seemed like a million places to visit.

Randostar2887d ago

Those games would require complete overhauls.

2887d ago
JEECE2887d ago

I know it's cool to say the older ESs are better than Skyrim because too many "bros" found out about Skyrim and made it "mainstream," but can we not pretend that Daggerfall belongs in the same category as the other games? It was absurdly big, randomly generated, and empty. The game would have to be completely remade to not be terrible by modern standards, and at that point Bethesda might as well just focus on Elder Scrolls 6, since they'd basically be making a new game anyway.

Jayszen2887d ago

@JEECE

"...it's cool to say the older ESs are better than Skyrim because too many "bros" found out about Skyrim and made it "mainstream"..." ;

Really?

nitus102887d ago

I thought the main idea of a game developer and producer like Bethesda was to make and sell games. If "bros" like your game and your have great sales then Bethesda have done allot of things right.

vickers5002887d ago

Another reason Skyrim is getting remastered is because it was practically already done. Todd Howard said they remastered Skyrim as practice for making Fallout 4 for next gen consoles. Groundwork was pretty much already done.

Morrowind is the one I want, but Skyrim is the one more people are going to buy. So they arent wrong unfortunately.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot23d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator23d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin23d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai23d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis00722d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer22d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

kaos8923d ago

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer22d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.

I'm Replaying Skyrim (again), and So Should You

Replaying Skyrim after 13 years is a reminder of the progress made in western RPGs over the last decade, but also what's been lost.

lucian22938d ago

nah, only mods make it decent, and even then it's bad, and this is after i modded for at least 3 years

Funnily enough, I'm about to play it for the first time in VR with 1000 mods to make the game playable, as is the Bethesda way
