We have to accept iterative consoles are inevitable

Tony Polanco from Geek.com writes:

"Console cycles as we know them are coming to an end. We can fight this as much as we want, but it would be as useless as fist fighting the wind."

We have to accept micro transactions are inevitable...

We have to accept dlc at game launches are inevitable...

We have to accept season passes are inevitable....

We have to accept huge day one patches are inevitable...

We have to accept paying for online on consoles are inevitable

We have to accept paying for time exclusives are inevitable...

We have to accept unfinished, unoptimized games are inevitable...

We have to accept online only games with no campaign are inevitable...

We have to accept 4 hour offline campaigns are inevitable...

We have to accept episodic games are inevitable...

We have to accept digital only games are inevitable...

We have to accept iterative consoles are inevitable...

Consoles aren't PCs.Games aren't optimized on graphics cards. Consoles aren't tablets.New software isn't optimized on older models.Consoles aren't cell phones. Ditto on software.Consoles aren't subsidized. More cost for minor improvements. As nice as forward compatible is, gamers need to understand there's always a downside.

Yeah... I see where this is going... The tech world has gone EA... Minor improvements for maximum profits and monetized everything...

Exactly. If Noone buys the things then these stupid decisions to release 3 yearly consoles will end

That's why I chuckle whenever I see an article saying we are in a new golden era of gaming. For the average modern game to have an amount of content that rivals Playstation 2 era and earlier, you have to pay almost double the buying price. Very few journalists are actually weighing the pros and cons of a move in the industry to the public unfortunately everything is a-okay due to the loudest voices aren't even gamers at all. Don't let me get started on variety.........

Volkama2921d ago

That depends on how you quantify content. Playstation 2 games shipped on DVDs, and rarely filled them to capacity. In many cases we are in fact buying twice the amount of data now.

Obviously I'm not suggesting we should pay per megabyte, but the inflated amount of data does represent a lot of additional work that developers and artists are putting into these games.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that the way games are developed and priced needs to change. I just don't think we can look back to a different era and give it the "don't make them like they used to, get orf my laawwwn!" rhetoric.

Kyosuke_Sanada2921d ago

@ Volkama I just see no reason why someone should pay extras for things as skins, color edits, characters and such. My problem is not alot of people look back for a second to wonder why so much people regard two generations ago as the best era in gaming and to those who do are written off with the word "nostalgia". Games like the new Doom and ReMake are great examples who developers remembered why their titles were great then improved upon it. The Souls games are another good source of showing how to approach things such as DLC which were similar to actual expansions from the past.

Comment of the year right here, couldn't agree more, I seriously hope that these dumb pratices and "new" hardware don't ruin console gaming in the long run... I would hate to have my hobbie gone to sh1t because of these greedy @ssholes.

SynestheticRoar2921d ago (Edited 2921d ago )

I'm not accepting shit. I'll buy a game at its cheapest. I will wait for the XL version. They can stick DLC up their a$$, along with season passes. Won't worry about day one patches. No time exclusive crap, I'll pass. Will comment about lazy programing. Never buy online only bullshit. When it's digital only i'm out.

Dark_king2921d ago

The only plus I am really seeing from these rumors is the used consoles market is going to have price drops much quicker. That's about it is there any other upside cause i am not really seeing it.If your going to say that games will look better on .5 console that's not really a plus to me.Its like saying here some great new console that we will never take true advantage of buy it. I have said it before if a console does not have games made to push the system to the limits then I will never buy it.

gamer78042921d ago (Edited 2921d ago )

not really, just don't buy the iterative versions... these have existed for a while anyways, they are called PCs.

Lord_of_Cinder2921d ago

The problem with this is that, once we start with iterative consoles, there is no coming back to normal consoles. Some people will skip consoles entirely rather waiting to see the next model next year. As we are right now, you still see a lot of people who does not jump to a new generation of consoles until 1 or 2 years later. Imagine now with iterative consoles?
