I was left disappointed with the demo. I would have much preferred FFX-style fighting. The system in FFXV feels like it should be an action fighting game, but holding down a button to auto-attack is pretty lame feeling and creates a sense of detachment from the game.

When I played the demo, I expected demo-worthy content. Content that would be nothing in comparison to a real game. I got exactly that; I was able to experience the combat style, enjoy a few fights, and find some hidden content. All of this made me want to play the game even more, in attempts to find more hidden items, and enjoy the combat even more.

I'd say it was quite successful as a demo without having to reveal any of the plot behind the story.

"Get with the times" is a stupid way to look at this, because this genre of game has been around almost as long as turn-based. They make these games into A-RPGS now because that's what the majority of people want; instant gratification. Square is going to do what brings in the money, and in this case, it's catering to all the impatient asshat youths in society now. Long dead are the times where Final Fantasy focused on their battles being strategic, requiring the player to have a brain to play.

But, that being said, I'll take what I can get. This game looks good, the battle system seems kinda... dull, but it'll do as long as the story and content is there.

The only times are that ARPG's sell better. It doesn't really say that TBRPG's aren't popular, just that they don't have the same mainstream appeal.

With rising development costs, and FF traditionally being a money sink in terms of costs as it is, AAA games(including FFXV) are going to go where they have the most chance to sell.

It doesn't mean people aren't willing to play turn based games though, or that they're dead, or that the FF series is dead because they've shifted their game play mechanics to another form of RPG.

While I prefer turn based games for RPGS, I still look at RPG's on what you can do with your character in terms of controlling what they're capable of, and then at how their story is presented and the characters develop. Whether it's TBRPG, or ARPG, is rather inconsequential to what I find most important in the RPG genre....it's just different ways to get to the important stuff.

I could have fun with both, and any RBRPG could be ARPG, or vice versa, and still be good and fun to play if one keeps an open mind.

Turn-based Final Fantasy, sure. FFXIV has been going strong, this game looks fantastic (Just needs some frame rate optimization, honestly) and Bravely Default (It's a spin-off but still counts) can easily carry the torch of the more traditional-styled games in the series. Games have to evolve and change over time, it was only inevitable.

GTA didn't get to where it was staying with old concepts, like FF, its a progressive series. Even installment builds a bit on the last.

I don't have any problems with turn-based (TB), active turn-based (ATB) and action RPG's. To me what is more important is the story and and the enjoyment factor which is of course subjective.

Having to micro manage everything can IMHO get boring really quickly however many people think that this is associated with turn base but in reality this is not normally the case since it can apply across all types of RPG's.

Actually having to micromanage in a particular boss fight can be very advantageous but do this for every enemy can get tedious and this is were the ability to switch between TB and ATB is IMHO important.

While I have no problems with fast paced games (currently playing Bloodborne) I start to get turned off by button mashing and IMHO the crown for that actually goes to "Tails of Xilla" since it's the only game that actually caused my hands to get RSI within an hour of playing which is unfortunate since I really did like the game although I did manage to get 20 hours into the game but having to wait a day or two for my hands to recover between each successive play was a turn off.

I don't have any problems with Bloodborne, the Souls series and The Witcher 3 on "Death March" all of which I can play for hours with out any discomfort.

I grew up on turn based games. They're my favorite but I'm not a blind fanboy.

Scrolling thru menus and pushing basically 2 buttons the entire battle is not more strategic than having to actively move your character, dodge/avoid attacks, use items, cast magic, attack, switch weapons, etc etc all at once. THAT requires exreme strategy.

Watch the gameplay footage on YouTube of people who actually understand the FFXV battle mechanics. It's insane.

XIII-2 was a pretty enjoyable game, and some of the late-game bosses were pretty challenging. ESPECIALLY the DLC bosses. Fight Gilgamesh and tell me you can beat him by spamming the auto attack command.

I actually did enjoy FFXIII and FFXIII-2 although I did enjoy FFXIII-2 more.

As for spamming the auto-attack button in the FFXIII games (was there one??) you really have to be kidding, if you did not know how to heal, buff or de-buff you would not get very far in the game. Sure you could get away with not using magic but the game would be allot harder.

I have enjoyed all the FF games I have played (not played FFIX, on-line or FFXIII-3) however I actually preferred FFXII mainly because the areas you moved in where huge. You could see the enemy coming and run if you were fast enough. You only fought (no moving to a battle arena) when you touched the enemy (no random encounters) and you could even move around the battlefield.

In FFXII one feature that was a love/hate (I liked it) for many was the technicks system since it was allot like boolean algebra programming. This actually led to the simpler paradigms system of FFXIII.

Like pretty much all up until FFXIII most FF games had turn-base and active turn-base and you could switch between the two easily.

Those are NOT valid concerns. It's been stated multiple times that the game is being optimized for both graphics and frame rate until it's release. This demo is not indicative of the final product whatsoever. This was basically it's own little game thrown together to get something to the fans.

So frame rate and graphics are not an actual concern.

Everything else is purely subjective. I had 0 issues with the controls, camera, lock on, input lag, Collison detection. As a matter of fact, not one person I know who played the demo experienced those things.

So yes, having an uninformed and completely subjective opinion will get disagreed with and that's ok.

If you had actual points that could be backed up, then yes...you'd have a decent point.

I thought the demo was terrible. Bad frame rate, poor combat, okay graphics and input lag in the dodge roll. It seems the majority of people love it though, I'm not really sure why but good luck to them. If this is Final Fantasy "evolving" and "getting with the times" then I want no part of it. I'm hoping the finished product is amazing though. I've missed the series since FF12. FFIX is my favourite and 6,7,8 and 10 are all brilliant. Having an opinion, and asserting a statement as fact are two very different things. His opinion is that the franchise is dead because of those things, but asserting that it's dead because of those things is not an opinion, rather a stupid comment.

Unfortunately, despite the "valid concerns" none of those equate to actually proving that the franchise is dead. The fact this game has the final fantasy name proves that it's not dead. If it fails to sell, then it may be worth discussing.

I have to admit that while I enjoyed it I did think the fighting was at a pretty basic level (though I wasn't one to hold down the button) but someone on here posted a video of someone playing the iron giant section and from that I see now there is a big complexity to the strategies you can employ. It was really impressive how they fought the boss.

And I agree, bashing a game because it's not your style isn't a good thing. I hate how halo is changed but I just say let them on with it, I won't play anymore. Saying this shouldn't be real time because it's a numbered title makes no sense. Final fantasy isn't just one singular thing. It can be anything within the RPG realm. There are other games to suit ones needs if this one doesn't tickle their fancy.

The tech they were demoing wasn't even good. The framerate was poor, the textures were meh at their best and the weather effects were below average. The time cycle was alright and shadows were actually pretty good, but there are plenty of games that do day-night cycles without masking loading issues with a near-black screen stuffed between day and night.

As originally announced it came off Romeo and Juliet meets Battle Royale, yet now it increasingly comes off as being about a road trip as set in the middle of a war. Like most modern RPGs, Western as well as Japanese, urgency plays little if any importance as players are allowed to explore and go on side quests.

godmars my boy, the now-cancelled FFvs13 had little to no information about it. We have literally no reliable information on how much the story has changed from Nomura's vision to Tabata's vision - or whether it's changed at all.

The whole road trip fiasco that began with the Jump Festa trailer 1 or 2 years back was because Square had spent like 8 years not giving us a single piece of info regarding the story. Who knows? Perhaps 4 guys travelling the world together was always a part of the original vision. Perhaps it wasn't.

Bear in mind that by the time FFvs13's production was stopped and Square began on FF15 - which was around 2011 - the game was roughly 30% done. Yes, 30% after 5 years in development. Knowing how much left, Square made the right decision to start it over on next-gen consoles.

Noctis was always going to leave Lucis after the city was invaded. This is fact and hasn't changed. His party was always going to be him and 3 other dudes. They were always going to travel the world in a car. This also hasn't changed. There was never going to be a "world map" as the overworld but an actual "open world" instead. I remember Nomura addressing that himself.

With regards to Stella. Yes, she was supposed to be an antagonist. Tabata claims the story of FF15 is pretty much the same as Nomura's FFvs13. This means that Stella's role as an antagonist wasn't as significant as perhaps the early trailers may have misled us to think. Luna's role in the story appears to be conversing with summons (and perhaps fal'cie) to join Lucis' side of the war instead of the empire's. We still don't know if Noctis can still see the "souls of the dead departing" like he and Stella could in FFvs13. That seemed like a very important plot point and Nomura would always mention that.

As for Romeo and Juliet. I think Nomura never said that Noctis and Stella would become romantically involved. Rather. it seemed they would have a special friendship due to both possessing their rare "sight." They would eventually confront each other in battle due to their opposing allegiances.

Every final fantasy game...at least since FF7, and excluding XIII...although there was no actual urgency in the first one, allowed the player to just go do whatever they wanted at some point in the game. I recently played FF7:PC port, and after Sephiroth calls the Calamity to the planet, you're basically free to go off and do whatever for hours on end, without a single character mentioning that there is any sort of urgency about stopping it. You can even go do other things within limits before that happens. The only exception are things that can't be done due to other events removing a place from the game.

Such things are just kind of the nature of RPG's that aren't completely linear. Almost all of them have this break from the urgency of the situation.

The demo was not very good until the final battle against the Iron Giant. I've heard...BUT it was a tech demo, but aren't those usually unplayable and look extremely good visually? And if we go that route, the graphical effects and visuals looked very last gen. Not that it is necessary bad but you could tell this game has been cooking for over a decade with numerous revisions. I thought it looked like an upscaled FF13 (still pretty, but not a true next gen experience).

Anyhow I don't think the franchise is dead but nothing I've seen has caused me to be overly excited.

I think FFXV is the FF game what most of Ff fans waited, me to I have only 1 problem with FFXV I don't like the gameplot how tabata changed it,what we know from the game already, but the game itself the gameplay and the huge world is fantastic.

Ok, the demo wasn't that good since it was more running around than fighting. I assume the demo was from the beginning of the game where they show you how to move character and fight. They should've make demo of some very cool fighting scenario with some piece of plot.

The demo isn't from the game at all. It's a tech demo as opposed to a demo of the actual game. I'd have liked more time as adult Noctis because the last fight was really cool. The rest of it was enjoyable enough for me though.

However seeing how many people on here are defending it I'll maybe give it another try because I really want FFXV and VII Remake to be good. I loved the turn base style, it's what made rpg's an rpg, it was unique to it. Honestly I haven't played any of the new one's but was immediately turned off by it as soon as I saw it. They should of morphed turn base into something else, it needed strategy . They could of taken the Chrono trigger style and take it to the next level but that's me I'm a retro guy

I'm one of those people who loved the ff series but hated everything after ffX. I really hated how the series was going but accepted the fact that they are trying to innovate and bring something new to the mechanics of the game. Still i felt their efforts were weak.

but then i saw the gameplay for FFXV and still i was a bit hesitant at first, now with a more fleshed out trailer, the game looks epic. I like how the action is done, and hopefully it would be a game that I could enjoy (and not a boy band country tour), so I have my hopes up once again for the ff series. Who knows, maybe tabata is the guy to do that and that would let nakamura continue his work on kh series

Pure antagonistic click-bait this article. It's impossible to get an idea of the breadth of a game by an hours worth of loosely associated gameplay. It's just to get a sense of the system and the universe. And to be honest I actually really enjoyed it, The battle system is going to take some getting used to for an old-school FF fan like me but compared to 13 and it's linear structure, it's another world and Enix could have a winner on their hands.

I played FF since IV and have beaten all but 2 and 3 out of the first ten. I disliked XII and the XIII trilogy for a couple of reasons. I think it's safe to say I'm one of the old fans. Yet I'm super hyped for XV. It finally looks like Square remembered how to make a game that is good. I could be wrong but we're going to see in just a few months. Also, XIV is great so the franchise can't be dead.

That demo did not sell me. I'm not a FF player but I decided to give it a shot. It seems like it was aimed at FF loyalists but they are the last people that need a demo. They are buying the game regardless. I would prefer a more action oriented demo to base my purchase on.
