Dev: PSVR Will Ship Millions; No Frames Out of Sync Unlike PC VR, No Jittering At All

Megaton Rainfall developer Alfonso del Cerro thinks PSVR will ship millions. He's particularly fond of the reprojection feature, which helps synchronization in a way not found in PC VR (Oculus/Vive).

Just waiting for Microsoft to drop their VR headset. Not sure if they even will this E3.

Eonjay2995d ago

Well, if you believe what Phil said to Gamespot.com it sounds like they wont be bringing VR to Xbox One. In his words, only open platforms (here he means Windows 10) are suitable for new tech. He said 'closed' ecosystems like Xbox One and PS4 aren't good for VR. This was the same interview where he said he hopes Sony does well.

Alexious2995d ago

Well, but they said Xbox One might get HoloLens titles, doesn't that qualify as new tech?

Anyway, I'm more excited about HoloLens than any of those VR devices. Too bad it costs so much...

Eonjay2995d ago

@Alexious

Yes it does but OP is about VR support dropping at E3.
Based on Phil's comments we shouldn't expect that. In reference to HoloLens, I have a feeling that that is still a ways out. I wouldn't really expect that until next year. You will know its coming when you hear more devs talking about support and content. So far, we aren't anywhere close to that yet.

Overload2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

@Alexious

The consumer version of Hololens has been delayed indefinitely.

http://news.softpedia.com/n...

hells_supernova2995d ago

Based on Phils comments we should be seeing Fable legends coming out of beta this year....oh wait.

Honestly though. I am looking forward to the future with these new technologies but I do not believe Microsoft will invest any further into the Xbox one. And I believe their next xbox will be a windows 10 media center for your tv.They stated years ago this was their end goal and honestly I do not mind that as long as there are games.

I love my pc gaming but have not upgraded to windows 10 however Forza is making a very strong case for me to jump.

2995d ago
2995d ago
conanlifts2995d ago

But they are possibly making xbox a more open platform. Who knows what they will do as time passes.they are certainly up to something lately.

Yetter2995d ago

@Overlord you can't delay something that never had a release date

Kleptic2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

sd11: what 'they're up to', at least imo, seems pretty obvious...they're absorbing Xbox as a product division into windows, which they are simultaneously trying to transform into a service...it'll be slow, and not this generation exactly...but the writing seems to be on the wall already...

nearly all of MS's profit comes from windows and windows related 'things'...the xbox division has growth, and finally has profit, but its a drop in the bucket compared to windows...and the division is also severely falling behind a particular competitor this generation...the 360 did well, but certain suits at MS acted as if it was their own doing...the variable was the Wii, which actively cut the market apart between different types of gamers...MS was successful at pulling in users from Sony when there was an odd ball gimmick confusing the casuals...this generation has no Wii, and its simply that Sony has performed better at getting both types of buyers for the time being...

so MS's current changes are a reaction to that...shareholder pressure has been building since 2013...for a second time...about what to do with a product line that is being outpaced by competition, again...this is exactly what was happening in 2004 with the first xbox, and the answer then was to rush a new device to launch and deal with whatever happens after (read: RROD)...the answer now seems to be have windows absorb the product line as much as possible and to spread its services across more users (read: better integrate 1st party published software to more platforms/users)...in one month we've heard more about this than we have since the xbox division was even announced in 2000...

this has little to do with the xbox one as a device...more to do with how eventually there won't be things called 'xbox's'...there will be PC's, and possibly even OEM gaming machines that run an 'xbox service'...Xbox Live is what will survive...individual proprietary and in house built xbox devices are most likely the question mark...

Whymii2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

I can imagine the cover art on the boxes having the statement "Better with HoloLens".

Now where have I seen something like that before...?

Volkama2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

Phil is all PR talk. I don't think he was referring to Windows 10 when talks about VR as an open platform. He's talking the VR headset as an open platform, essentially like existing display tech. A Vive owner can buy and play from the Oculus store, so Vive would be considered an open platform. If Vive only played games from the Steam VR store it'd be closed.

Read between the lines, if MS say it is better to support open VR platforms then that's exactly what they have already decided to do. You can expect the Xbox to be compatible with open VR platforms down the line (ie Rift, Vive, a.n.other).

I can't see the Xbox One driving those, but I'd wager it's coming for the nextbox.

Apollosupreme2995d ago

Hololense is gonna cost three times the most expensive announced VR headset.

BG115792995d ago

Well Phil also said that Xbox's exclusives wouldn't go to PC...
So right now, it's kind of hard to believe anything right now.
But I'm sure of this, if the PSVR is successful, MS will definitely do something...

Your going to have to wait till next generation for that from the looks of things.

On topic: its great to hear the praise for PSVR.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2995d ago

@Frisky

Microsoft doesn't have a VR headset, but they do have an Augmented Reality headset.

Alexious2995d ago

Indeed, and it rocks. AR>VR for me.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2995d ago

@Alexious
The consumer version of HoloLens headset has been delayed indefinitely.

2995d ago
Death2995d ago

Hololens was delayed indefinitely? That's impressive for a device that never had a ship date. The dev units are shipping as scheduled, but the consumer version which never had an announced price point or release date won't ship until Microsoft feels it's ready. A reasonable person understands that isn't "indefinitely delayed". A person with an agenda will call it indefinitely delayed.

As for Xbox and Hololens, they are completely separate devices that work independent of each other. It's possible we will see Xbox titles as Universal Windows Apps on the device, but an Xbox isn't needed at all.

Bdub20002995d ago

Where is the article that says it was delayed indefinitely? Stop repeating false rumors...

The article being passed around clearly states the consumer release is delayed until they make sure it's ready. The word "indexinitely" implies forever. The statement was that they are withholding release to make sure it works well for a good consumer experience.

IamTylerDurden12995d ago

U will never see Hololens in gamestop or Target. It probably won't ever get a full consumer version. Prices were estimated up to $1500. It's not legitimate gaming option, it's more a PR play atm.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen2995d ago

@Death

I didn't write the stories. If you have a complaint about the wording these "journalists" are using, take it up with them. Here's a link to the original story:

https://recode.net/2016/02/...

Alex Kipman:

“When I feel the world is ready, then we will allow normal people to buy it.It could be as soon as we say ‘yes,’ and it could be as long as a ‘very long time.' If a consumer bought it today, they would have 12 things to do with it, And they would say ‘Cool, I bought a $3,000 product that I can do 12 things with and now it is collecting dust.'”

Only thing Microsoft will be droping is more sales and studios at this rate.

ps5fanboy2995d ago

Lol , they already dropped lots of stuff they shouldn't lmfao.

NovaCorps2995d ago

your console is done already stop trying thx

XanderZane2994d ago

What does MS Hololens have to do with PSVR Headset? Also Hololens is currently only for developers right now at a $3000 price. You won't see it for consumers for at least a couple years I'm thinking. MS wants developers to make games, apps & tools for it first before releasing it to consumers in the future.

As for PSVR, I'm just waiting to hear the price. They are shipping millions, but how many gamers will be buying one immediately? That will be the big question.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 2994d ago
ccgr2995d ago

Given the price point, I'm sure ti will do great!

Alexious2995d ago

It will have to be inferior to Oculus Rift. I don't think many people would buy it with a price higher than $399.

FriedGoat2995d ago

Rift will sell nothing compared to PSVR, mark my words. I'm just hoping that PSVR has PC drivers eventually so I don't have to get 2 headsets.

Vhampir2995d ago

@FriedGoat
You can hope, but it requires the co-processor to work, afaik. Which is also why they don't notice "jittering" or "sync" issues. It has to fake the extra frames.

Vive and Rift will be shipping soon, so we'll see how well VR catches on.

UltraNova2995d ago

Oh you mean like people bought the 100 dollar more expensive xb1 instead of the superior ps4 during this gen's beginning?

Got it!

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 2995d ago
Eonjay2995d ago

If PSVR is as good as all the devs claim it is, and it manages to be only half the price of the competitors, then it probably will sell millions. Here the price vs performance argument plays out in Sony's favor. Its the only way to get masses into VR. PC VR will be great too, but it doesn't have the same ease of access as the PlayStation offering.

freshslicepizza2995d ago

i don't listen to devs like this,

"I can’t answer that question due to the contract with Sony. But I can say that I’d love to support both (HTC Vive and Oculus Rift)."

sounds like he's biased right out of the gate.

Eonjay2995d ago

And perhaps you are exposing your own bias for taking his comment out of context. He was asked whether his game would appear on other devices. Obviously, his exclusivity deal prevents him from giving an answer but he goes the extra mile to let folks know that Megaton Rainfall will appear on other devices.

Listen to devs like this. If you are intent on getting a Rift or Vive, he pretty must says that it will come after the deal has expired.

How do you find bias in his honesty?

generic-user-name2995d ago

If anything, his honesty about his contract shows he has no bias at all.

UltraNova2995d ago

He was being honest in light of his contract, its time you tried being honest for a change, Moly.

Festano2995d ago

That doesn't mean he's not being truthful at all.

Truthandreason2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

@anyone disagreeing with moldy
the dude has a contract with Sony... he's not going to say anything negative to the only one giving him money.

IamTylerDurden12995d ago

If he truly didn't believe in PSVR and if it was bad tech you think he would put himself out there in praising it to the heavens? He wouldn't say anything. Take it as a good sign that ppl put their reputations on the line for an unproven tech.

Devs Love PSVR to death, just like PS4. Sony hit on consecutive hardware devices it appears.

@Eonjay
"And perhaps you are exposing your own bias for taking his comment out of context."

how? did i say oculus was better?

"He was asked whether his game would appear on other devices."

that isn't what i am referring to. it was his commnet about how on his pc there is jittering. he doesn't even mention what his pc is. do you hear any other developer working on oculus saying this?

"Obviously, his exclusivity deal prevents him from giving an answer but he goes the extra mile to let folks know that Megaton Rainfall will appear on other devices."

once again that isn't what i am talking about.

"Listen to devs like this. If you are intent on getting a Rift or Vive, he pretty must says that it will come after the deal has expired."

but until then he will plug psvr, and why wouldn't he?

"How do you find bias in his honesty?"

because history has shown when someone makes an exclusive deal they will make pr statements to try and sell that product.

notachance2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

'because history has shown when someone makes an exclusive deal they will make pr statements to try and sell that product.'

you have an exclusive deal with MS then? Everyone on this forum already know you're going full on MS mode every time you comment, the ones you're convincing are only your fellow MS pr bud.

SteamPowered2995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

The Dev doesn't state once that PC is jittery or anything of the sort. He simply says PSVR is smooth and he can't say the same for PC. Hyperbole achieved.

Alexious2995d ago

He says that with PS VR he never sees frames outside of sync, while with PC VR he never had that kind of experience. No hyperbole at all.

Ravenor2995d ago

He clearly states he hasn't reproduced the same experience on his PC. What's his PC specs? What games, settings and version of the Vive or Oculus was he using or have access to? It may not fit your definition of hyperbole, but it sure as hell fits the definition of anecdotal.

nitus102995d ago (Edited 2995d ago )

@Ravenor

Minimum specs for the Oculus Rift is:

> Nvidia GeForce GTX 970/AMD Radeon R9 290 equivalent or greater
> Intel Core i5 4590 equivalent or greater
> 8GB+ RAM
> 2x USB 3.0 port
> HDMI 1.3 video output supporting a 297MHz clock via a direct output architecture
> Windows 7 OS or greater

Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

Somehow I don't think the writer has a PC with less specs than the minimum requirements. However I do agree that it would be appropriate to list the technical specs and attributes of the PC you are using.

kraenk122995d ago

The thing is both Rift and Vive still have a tiny screen door effect which the PSVR doesn't because it uses superior screen tech with three RGB sub pixels per pixel.

plmkoh2995d ago

Glad someone realises the fallacy that is Samsung AMOLED and exactly why you don't see AMOLED in any thing larger than a tablet. The 2K+ resolutions screens used on the other VR headsets are basically marketing on white papers, in reality their sharpness is half to a quarter the sharpness of the superior OLED RGB screen.

You see all these journalists scratching their heads thinking why the 1080p RGB OLED in PSVR barely exhibits the screen door effect despite stepping down from the expectations drilled into their minds from Oculus that you need 2k+ resolution to reduce the effect. The answer is the Oculus has 2k+ out of pure necessity due to AMOLED to get the same sharpness of a 1080p RGB screen.

UltraNova2995d ago

@above

Then if unit cost wasn't an issue why did Occulus and HTC go for AMOLED instead of OLED RGB when the latter is obviously more suited for VR?

kraenk122995d ago

@ultraNova

Sony was working on that tech since 2010. They even had headsets before. They simply developed superior tech which isn't available to any if the others.

senis_kenis2995d ago Show
UltraNova2995d ago

Thanks guys, but they[Occulus or HTC] could contract Samsung to make a VR suitable OLED screen for them, but they didn't, maybe they lacked the technical expertise(unlike Sony), who knows.

That said I'm glad Sony made some really good decisions on PSVR's development.

Cant come out soon enough!

So it looks like they have abandoned unreal for future iterations of the game and are sticking with ego. So that means no decent VR support on PC and none on console seeing as the ego can't handle it properly. I think I'm done with this franchise it's turned into fifa with a hefty price tag and no innovation from one year to the next. Time for someone else to have a go at this licence
