Opinion piece on the future of the MMO genre and where it is heading.
Blizzard Entertainment has announced the opening of beta registrations for “World of Warcraft: The War Within,” inviting players to explore new subterranean worlds beneath Azeroth.
Danish from eXputer: "Despite Blizzard's attempt to give a fresh new spin to World of Warcraft, some fans still seem to be stuck in the past."
HG writes: "Blizzard is usually pretty bad at keeping secrets, but the company somehow managed to keep this one under wraps until now. Plunderstorm is a special limited-time event that’s basically World of Warcraft’s take on the Battle Royale genre."
I'm afraid so :(
MMORPG's are just taking a 3 - 4 year break, before the quality is returning. The executives are currently taking a step back from the genre, because they tried to cash in on it and failed.
We'll see the return of niche games, instead of something catering to everyone and everything.
The tradinional mmorpg is pretty much dead. I think the future of mmos is in games like Star Citizen, ARK, The Devision etc etc.
Also, as much as it pains me to say this i think EQ Next has been cancelled.
WoW ruined MMO Genre by making them all Themepark.
At least Black Desert Online seems promising, since it is a Sandbox. How MMO Should be.
