What Happens If MGS5 Is As Poorly Written As MGS4 or Peace Walker?

We all know MGS5: The Phantom Pain will be fantastic from a gameplay perspective. But what about its story?

MGS 4 was poorly written?? That's news to me.

nidhogg3253d ago

That and peacewalker being told of as "poorly written" is news to me.

XBLSkull3253d ago

I just need a stealth/action game to tie me over until the king Splinter Cell gets its next iteration. This game won't disappoint, I skip the cutscenes anyways, story is the worst part of this series.

Normann3253d ago

It can be explained very short an precise:

Click-bait

AlphaKennyOne3253d ago

I think Peace Walker was better than MGS4. I thought MGS4 was great minus the ridiculously long cutscenes and anything involving geckos. I also didn't like that I could only call 2 people on my CODEC. Really? Just two? We can mess with a wide range of frequencies but we can only call two people.

XboxOneX3253d ago

Metal Gear Solid V will be a masterpiece.

Hideo Kojima will be turning in his grave before he lets Konami ruin the Metal Gear franchise.

PygmelionHunter3253d ago

Yeah, well... He'll turn in his grave alright, since Konami is likely to produce more Metal Gear *related* garbage after MGS5.

You wanna know the best part about it? Half the people who say they won't support the franchise without Kojima are still going to buy the damn games like hypocrites. Mark my words.

Irishguy953253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

Ah come on, i'm an anime fan and even MGS4 was too cheesy to handle.

"I am the lighting!!"
Johnny existence was an abomination
Ughh,,, Hal and Naomi's love scenes were cringe worthy. Not like MGS1 or 2, or 3 for that matter. MGS has always been cheesy but **** me 4 was extremely cheese filled panini with cheese rolled on top of it.

Its crazy to me anyway, why people will defend MGS4 when we could have the quality of MGS3 and before back. Never should have encouraged them for MGS4. I just hope MGS5 isn't like this...but to be fair, it doesn't look so cheesy so far.

I mean don't get me wrong, mgs4 didn't "Suck" but damn...it was the poorest of the MGS series storywise

Surely this takes a bit of the cake though
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

MysticStrummer3253d ago

"...it was the poorest of the MGS series storywise"

In your opinion.

In my opinion, MGS4's story is easily better than MGS2's.

jambola3253d ago

"Its crazy to me anyway, why people will defend MGS4"

really? it's that crazy that people defend enjoyed something you didn't? that they liked it enough to defend it? and it shouldn't even be encouraged?

RedDeadLB3253d ago

Metal Gear was always cheesy as hell. I mean, seriously, the entire series is so cheesy it's difficult to say which MGS iteration is cheesier than the other.

tmh35933253d ago

I agree but towards the end of the game the story got really good I just hated the beginning though. I'd love something like mgs3 the story was awesome and the bosses were the best. Mgs4 bosses just didn't interest me at all just pump enough bullets in them, there wasn't strategy to every boss like in mgs 3. Regardless I'm going to live this game too like all the other games.

flyingwombat333253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

*sigh* I see all your points, and I don't event think you're wrong per se, but I still absolutely love that game. I would agree that the core storyline was the least engrossing of the numbered entries, but there's something about the resignation with which that game was written that I find fascinating. It's almost as if, after being berated for years about answering all the questions of the saga, Kojima aggressively removed all the mystery from his series in a Damn-near self-aware manner. When you play (watch) MGS4, nothing is sacred anymore.

It's a strange game. On the one hand, I see more problems with it (both from a gameplay and story-telling perspective) than any other entry in the series, but I LOVE that game. Somehow, there's so much good in it that I overlook all the bad. I don't think I could pick a favorite in the series (although my least favorite is Peace Walker for sure), all of them are so different and magnificent in their own ways.

I thought both games were well written

formanbradley3250d ago (Edited 3250d ago )

The nanomachine's nanomachines were interfering with the nanomachines, Snake!

joab7773253d ago

One thing I know for sure, the author of this article suffers from the same bloated writing style as Kojima.

That said. Are ya kidding me? Of course the story is gonna be absurd. Have you ever actually gone through the entire storyline. It lost any semblance of continuity or realism a long time ago. Most younger ppl probably sit in the same shadow cast by Saints Row, oblivious to the original games story and intent. All they know now is MGS4, Peace Walker, and whatever 50 Page reddit guide you can find to try and explain everything up until now.

But that's MGS today. And we are fortunate and unfortunate that it's a sequel. Good b/c it isn't an open ended story that could end w/ Snake becoming a time traveler. Bad b/c it's bookended, so creating a cohesive standalone story and plot may be quite difficult. Hopefully, Ground Zeroes negates the desire to reintroduce everyone to everyone.

There is a huge plus though. It's open world. And while it works against games like TW3, Fallout etc. when trying to tell a gripping linear story, it may be just what this game needs. Instead of playing for an hr and watching cutscenes for an hr, we will be lost in an astonishing world for 100's of hours, building our base, tackling strategic missions.

The story won't be front and center anymore, and that could be the best possible thing. Not b/c I dont love it, but b/c even in a game like TW3 (which has the best questing I've ever played), having a world to get lost in always takes precedence.

jambola3253d ago

I understand why you wouldn't want too much cutscenes, i mean you don't even have the time to finish your words so you clearly don't have the time to sit through cutscenes.

CDbiggen3253d ago

MGS4 poorly written? No.
Peace Walker on the other hand had some of the most cringe inducing dialogue and scenes of the whole series. The focus on Paz and peace. Anything to do with the Sandinistas. The magical, flying, singing, self-drowning machines. It remains my least favourite Metal Gear to this day. Although I loved the mother Base aspect of the game.

WitWolfy3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

Obvious troll article is a troll.

_-EDMIX-_3253d ago

This whole article is some crazy, BS news! LOL!

Poorly written, sure bud......sure. MGS easily is the most craziest storylines I've ever seen in any game period. If anything, MGS is in another class of great game writing that doesn't happen often.

Once you play an MGS game....prepare for every other game's story you play from now on to be lessor lol.

MGS Story line > everything else.

We don't even have a close second to MGS amazing, crazy story arch of clones, family of family, children of, etc lol

Sunny in MGS4 is Olga's daughter, Raiden was told that he had a nano machines in his body that if his heart where to stop, Sunny, Olga's daughter would die.

....this happened lol, yes people...things get THAT WILD in the MGS time line, folks from MG1, have influence in things in MGS4, 5 etc.

http://img3.wikia.nocookie....

You could write a whole game on just 1 of MGS many, many crazy, crazy story arcs. Every time I play an MGS game, I reminded that no other series is even close to such an amazing world as the MGS world.

MGS fans know how amazing those games stories are because....I mean hey they are MGS fans for a reason lol

McToasty2073253d ago

Feel free to read the opening paragraph before commenting as he says MGS4 was poorly written in that it was bloated, which as someone who likes MGS I can totally agree with, having regular 30 minute exposition dumps is shitty writing in any medium. I still like the game a lot (it's an 8.5/10 in my view) but clearly that games narrative needing serious editing or better pacing and when compared to the original MGS or Snake Eater it really stands out as poorly written.

gamerben3251d ago

I think so... MGS4 and MGS2 are the worst in the series story wise.

MGS4 rocked man.Far from poorly written. To this day is still stands tall with the best games I've ever played.

PygmelionHunter3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

It's actually My favorite Metal Gear, let alone one of my favorite video games ever.

Poorly written my buttocks! If anything, it's arguably the best conclusion to a video game saga ever. That goes for both its story and gameplay (which I still find innovative to this day!).

Peace Walker, on the other hand, raises a lot of eyebrows regarding the technology already present at the time when you consider the events of both MG1 and MG2:SS. But aside from that, it's also far from poorly written, it's a rather crazy and unbelievable story, but satisfying for a change of pace.

Peace Walker's gameplay, though? I can only say that I despise the Monster Hunter style mission system in this game, and that's coming from a MH fan, but it simply doesn't fit in...

The only thing i thought was poorly written was the whole liquid snake manifesting through a hand, which actually sticks thorough the series. I would have written that Ocelot gotten a fully Prosthetic hand to be like BigBoss. And that Foxhound reconstructed liquid snake like they did with Frank Jaeger.

The rest of the story i thought was great.

pixelsword3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

You realize that ocelot hypnotically induced himself to believe that, don't you? In MGS4, they even had a scene where he snapped out of it for a second.

DevilOgreFish3253d ago (Edited 3253d ago )

right, but do you agree that bringing back liquid as prosthetic hand was not the best script writing. Kojima even said him self liquid was only brought back through fan reception, if he could he would rewrite some of lore leading from MGS to MGS2.
http://www.gamespot.com/art...
http://www.metalgearinforme...

Do you disagree with kojima's opinion that he couldn't have done better?

Irishguy953253d ago

Thats just as bad though...

_-EDMIX-_3253d ago

Even though thats explained in MGS4....its still just AMAZING! Its one of those crazy things that MGS only does great.

Classic moment in MGS2 and just very, very Kojima.

jambola3253d ago

If the writing is on par with those then it will be amazing.

No. But MGS5: Ground Zeroes might actually be one of the greatest Game Demo ever, if not the best.

xHeavYx7d ago

I know a lot of people didn't, but I actually liked that story twist at the end. The game was fun and all, but I wouldn't call it a timeless classic.

Cacabunga6d ago

Metal Gear legend stopped with number 4.
MGS5 needed a year or 2 more of development to be maybe among the classics.. it was clearly rushed, especially at the end. The story teaches us absolutely nothing new.

just_looken6d ago

A demo is free that was a $40 cry for help as later we would know konami did not want to fun hideo and his team anymore that is why we got the unfinished phantom pain.

-Foxtrot7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Meh

Great stealth gameplay but the game was just average.

Bland open world that felt lifeless, the story felt shoehorned in, unfinished story etc. The whole thing was just average to me compared to the other main titled games.

I would have rather preferred it if they kept Ground Zeroes for the main game as the opening and the rest of the game turns into a Metal Gear 1 & 2 remake to bring things full circle.

just_looken6d ago

If you dig around they had old behind trhe scenes of phantom pain vids and books wrote around the time.

Before funding was puled the main idea was to keep peace walker coop it was in the games early builds and that end game were your building your base that was suppose to be metal gear one.

You as the fake big boss was going to make your own metal gear one map aka your base (outer heaven) then me as sold snake use the mode that is in the game invade/defeat the base even fight your current version of metal gear that was in the game but not finished.

So your idea was on the table bit got canned.

CrimsonWing697d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Like hell it is. That was the first time I became aware of being sold an unfinished game and was blown away about blind fanboys saying it was some perfect game.

Yea, the first few chapters were great until they do that thing halfway and make you replay all the missions again. Then little things like capturing animals but only seeing a JPEG unlike 3 where everything was modeled out. Areas were massive, desolate, and boring to look at.

Game was a massive let down for me and the potential was so high for it. Honestly, this was one of the most disappointing games I ever played. What’s worse is it starts off brilliant. You literally play through until you get to the point where you could tell they just stopped developing and then quickly used glue and construction paper to “finish” it and then sold it. Quite frankly, that’s insulting to consumers and fans.

Inverno7d ago

People have selective memory. This game had huge drama attached to it, what Konami did to Kojima and this game was horrible. Now they praise Konami cause they revived Silent Hill, even though SH looks half arsed too.

CrimsonWing697d ago

I dunno if they’re getting much praise after the Silent Hill 2 debacle. Makes me scared sh*tless for the MGS 3 Remake…

Michiel19896d ago

I don't wanna defend konami, but Kojima had 7 years to make the game, it's not that weird for a publisher to expect a game to be finished in that amount of time.

Also no one is praising konami from what I've seen, they're just excited that a Silent Hill game is releasing

CrimsonWing695d ago (Edited 5d ago )

@Michiel1989

You’re absolutely correct. Look, the dude is a visionary and has brought us some incredible games, but he constantly would go over budget and could never stick to a deadline. I don’t know if people remember the MGS 4 trailers but it became a joke when you’d see a release date and then they crossed it out in the next trailer to give another.

What a lot of people don’t know is there’s a certain amount of money given for development and marketing. When you go over the budget and add additional marketing over the deadline it isn’t cheap. MGS GZ and V were laughable to me for the amount of time he had to develop them and he spent even more time on the engine that wasn’t anything revolutionary to me. I mean, GZ was nothing more than a demo and they released that art like $40 I think, probably to further help fund V. He then spent money for Kiefer Sutherland who did nothing for the character, which I think Kojima just wanted because he’s a fan.

Konami just had enough and said this is the deadline and you’re done after this. It’s business, but fans took it personal. I mean look at this Overdose game he’s been doing.,, like when is that ever coming out?

Michiel19895d ago

I kind of forgot about overdose but yeah exactly my thoughts. He has made some of the best games out there and definitely deserves time to create his new masterpiece, but it's not a bottomless well.

This is pure speculation but I imagine he got around 4 years to make the game excluding pre-production. If after those 4 years the game is nowhere near being done, the relationship will be strained between them one way or another.

about the konami being praised thing, if let's say blizzard announces world of warcraft 2 today I'll be excited as hell for the game, but that doesn't mean my opinion of blizzard changes only a tiny bit cause they're still trash.

Yeah, it was the only MGS I didn't play and this is coming from someone who got back into gaming after skipping a generation due to MGS4 back in 2008. It just seems to be the complete opposite of the MGS I always knew and loved (1-4).

JEECE7d ago

Yes and no. In many ways in was a great game; there's a very strong argument that it has the best gameplay of any MGS game, and that it is one of the more interesting open world "playgrounds" we have gotten, in terms of how the world operates. But as an MGS narrative, it is pretty far down the list, for many reasons.

Storm236d ago

I don't think there is any argument. The gameplay was incredible. But yeah...disappointed in the rest. Could have been incredible but...well...we all know what happened...

JEECE5d ago

I don't think there is much of one either but apparently some people found the world very boring compared to the more linear structures of other entries so I didn't make a definitive statement in order to acknowledge the outliers.

DarXyde6d ago

The thing about Metal Gear Solid is that the narrative is what determines which is your favorite because the gameplay had ALWAYS improved with every mainline entry. It's amazing.

If it was gameplay, we'd all say The Phantom Pain, but the story is what truly sets them apart.

For me, that's Snake Eater, which is also my favorite game of all time.

JEECE5d ago

That's my favorite too, particularly if we are talking about the subsistence version with camera control.

Fishy Fingers7d ago

For me, best gameplay, worst, everything else.

Storm236d ago

Yeah...gameplay was so damn good.

Too bad it was a lazy release. They could've updated the visuals and everything. Missed opportunity.
