I honestly think it looks pretty good. If you break it down to a technical level sure it is weaker then one might like. That said it seems to be using color and style far more then 3 or NV did. It's really one of those art style trumps raw graphical horsepower.

I would imagine they may be putting the resources in better areas that would benefit the game far more then just better visuals and I am perfectly fine with that.

I would rather they put a massive open world that runs smooth then push graphics and have a far more shaky experience. But then again that is just me.

Bansai, you have seen one trailer that could be early work. It is one of the biggest franchises ever and Bethesda knows what is important to people. How about you at least wait to see the game in action at E3 before raising your torches. Gamers are so reactionary and entitled anymore, it makes me sick. Dewitt, at a cost of $70/game, gamers should have high expectations. They're ENTITLED to their opinion.

When there are really nice looking games out there with great gameplay and story, it's fair to challenge Bethesda. In fact, go ahead and challenge them regardless because challenge leads to better results.

The dev can scoff all they want, they're also ENTITLED to their opinion. They can also rest easy because they have a great following that's going to show up for this one because they earned it on the previous titles.

People who argue graphics don't matter, fine, I'm with you if the art direction works for the game and more importantly the game is fun and functions properly. However, people who take issue with these graphics are also correct because gaming tastes are subjective and there is no 'right' answer. At $70/game and with many great games out there offering the sandbox experience everyone has the luxury of buying into what's important to them. I would recommend 'GTA5' or Infamous Second Son to Bansai. Alternatively, I would recommend the PC version of Fallout 4 to him as he'll be able to upgrade the graphics(and virtually anything else) shortly after release.

Obviously we all know that 180 million PS3 & XBOX 360 users aren't gonna buy Fallout 4, but that still represents a potential 180 million sales OPPORTUNITIES.

The point I'm trying to make is that the potential sales revenue for 7th gen is still relatively high.....probably on par (approximately) to that of the 8th gen. Less, perhaps, but still very significant. Publishers can't just poo poo that.
I mean, If you were the CEO or president of a large publisher with your job on the line every year and your pay, stocks and bonus tied to the profitability of your company's revenue, could you just easily say "F" 7th gen?

The community on next gen console (combining pc with it) have games that sell better than on last gen consoles and it's a lot more active. A lot of the gamers who still have a last gen console really only buy stupid shit like Call of Duty and a few others.

Even if one did, I don't see that actually hurting Fallout 4 on PS4 and XONE if its being done after the fact.

Mind you, even if they are using the sales on PS4, PC and XONE to fund the ports, even that doesn't really make sense. Ports cost as little as 1 million to produce. I don't think they are making a last gen version as it would actually just make sense to have all 5 out and just have another team porting it while its being made vs after the fact.

I don't think it will happen, but I wouldn't really be surprised. Many companies are not really transparent regarding such things. But hiding a last gen version is actually strange considering they will be their money makers, not the next gen versions (based on install base)

@Persis- That doesn't always take into account technical feasibility, consider the game can't be made on those systems which out game breaking changes. They are trying to convey something, that may not be properly conveyed on last gen systems.

For all we know, the more ram might mean the game is seamless with no loading, what if that factors deeply into the game?

As a business man, I theoretically don't disagree with you, but their is always a trade off.

Make a last gen version now and RISK losing an audience on next gen by not making an exclusive next gen experiences.

Example if GTAVI was coming out and this was the start of the gen. Would it make sense to make a PS3 and 360 version along with a next gen version if it meant not making the next gen versions have full interiors with no loading in every building?

What if some other publisher went next gen ONLY from the start and beat Rockstar to the punch? What if that became at the time THE FIRST REAL NEXT GEN open world game in terms of next gen standards?

Its...open world with cars, buildings, vs the same as GTAVI....but every home, building etc can be entered?

That is the reason why some go next gen ONLY as they still need to compete against other publishers on a technical level. We only love GTA as much as we love its amazing features.

I'll very much play an open world game that introduced that concept, they need to strongly push that they are THE #1 post apocalyptic next gen game. To nerf it for sales, could also hurt them if someone like the Metro 2033 team decided they where going fully open world like the older S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Do you want to be going up against such a concept? would it be worth it if it mean losing sales for the rest of the gen to another company?

You can't just deny that people's complaints are invalid when it comes to something as subjective as how beautiful or realistic looking a game is. To be fair Fallout 3 and New Vegas didn't exactly run all the great on the PS3, it worked I guess, I did mange to finish it, I couldn't finish some of the dlc for New Vegas

Just because someone points out bad visuals, that does not mean they aren't excited for the game. You can point something out and still want the game. If visuals are bad, they're bad. That doesn't mean the game is bad or that the person isn't interested. IT'S JUST POINTING IT OUT. I think the graphics are underwhelming, but does that reflect the quality of the game? No. It's just a thing to point out. Shadow of The Colossus is in my top 5 of all time. In this day and age, it isn't technically impressive. 100% , fully agree been playing since fallout 1 on the PC, fallout series by Fargo was never about the highest graphics, it was about telling a series of stories in a world that would be deadly to live in, but show every type of emotional baggage that goes along in humans lives, but with the added stress of an environment that is to be blunt out to get you from.

Super mutants, rad ghouls, killer plants, rad insects, groups of mental unstable humans. Not just raiders , slavers is bad enough, than the brotherhood of steel, enclave's heavy handed policy on humans that live in the wasteland.

Top it off, deadly robots that are active trying to stop you from gaining supply's that may not belong to you. But hell since the world is trying to kill you any way.

You have to do something to survive.lol

Your pipboy guides you along the way from Fallout 1 to Now Fallout 4 admiring the local fauna can be deadly...take heed feel free to admire the what's left of the region, just be ready to use lots of stimpacks..lol

IE: your character has more important things to worry about than a high resolution texture on a gun, like it may be firing on him/ her and you having to "duck and cover"

I doubt it will this time, as the PS3 was their first shot at a PS open world game and the cell processor is hardly easy to work with. Not to mention the PS4 has the biggest market share between the home consoles by a large margin. It's possible they may be watching their step this time, especially with Skyrim's issues with DLC on the PS3.

In a way I feel that's kinda sad on one way, because you missed out on so much, but excited for you being able to play such a good series in computer game history.

If you want to really catch up on more back ground and history of the series, the PC ver of Fallout 1, 2 and fallout tactics brotherhood of steel for all three game's together on one DVD is only $20.00 or less now only takes a PC with 600 MHz or less single core CPU and a GPU with 32MB graphics card to run. Hell even netbooks can run those three games because even system ram being 1GB or less runs the games just fine.

Its worth the money for hundreds of hours of play with just those three games, and plenty of mods that extended the games

To their own credit when Fallout 3 and Skyrim were released they looked really good, so they have a good track record when they reassure people it looks good.

As for the bugs,sure, games that massive are going to have them. Dragon Age did, Witcher does, even Mass Effect. For me, it's mainly the characters with their mitten hands and the low poly dog with no fur that brings the graphics down a notch. The rest of the game is looking great. None of that means the game will be less fun to play though, it's just an observation.

Nope. It can run on older systems. That's not a dumb comment, it's a statement of fact. If they wanted to make it run on older systems, they could. Skyrim on that calulator isn't same game or the same engine. It is just some fan game entirely built from scratch. That can be done for many other games by anyone like him that still lives in the basement and has far too much time on their hands...

Fallout 4 likely could play on last gen with a lot of porting and optimizing, but they just simply don't want to bother. It's easier for them to hide behind PR statements because most people believe just about anything.

Also like I thought, it's not skyrim. It's a fan made calculator game that is based on skyrim lore. It's not that impressive at all.

Do you realize how weak last gen consoles are? They are ten years old, ancient. Fallout 4 while models may not be better than PS3 the frames(actually 30), improved lighting, number of enemies, particle effects, models are improved(though I can agree slightly), they probably have more physics based things in their too, I saw way more foliage than past games. All of these things combined could increase cost by a lot and make it unplayable by past gen. The witcher 3 without its wind physics, hair physics, and foliage, could probably run on last gen as well. It'd look like shit compared to the ps4 version however and would pretty much be too seperate games with all the foliage they'd have to remove. It'd look bar, but they could do it.

So yes every game can go on last gen. However you going to have to remove a lot. Change a lot of settings lower and remove a bunch of items all together

I personally think the game looks gorgeous. From what i have seen in the trailer from the small details to the more vibrant colour palette, it all looks great to me.

I respect your opinion, but saying that it will work on PS3 and X360 is just not the right thing to say. I bet it will have better textures, more detailed characters, better FPS, better resolution and many other features that just wouldn't have been possible on last gen hardware. Even if it was it would probably be a dumbed down version of the game.

IMO we should all wait for further details to come in before completely hating on the game.

I'm not actually hating the game. People think I am because I levied a criticism on Bethesda but if you read my comment I never said anything bad about the game or its graphics. I said that their opinion that the game looks fantastic is worthless and saying that a game using an ancient engine can't work on the last gen consoles is just stupid. They clearly don't care about updating anything, they're just adding. Bethesda games tend to use a lot of recycled assets while they focus on scope. That's why music is the same, that's why voice actors are the same, hell even environments are the same in some cases.

When you play Fallout 4, pay attention to how many reused assets there are then ask yourself exactly what it is preventing that game, a game that's reusing assets and using an ancient engine, from running on 360 and PS3.

Again, I'm not saying that they SHOULD have it run on those consoles, in fact it's good that they aren't. But to say that they wouldn't work? And it's coming from Pete Hines too? Come on now.

I can't say anything about the re-used assets since i have not played the last 2 fallout games(but i am thinking about buying them though).

Please don't misunderstand me. I think you are one of the few guys who actually make sense on this website. Its just that we should really wait for the whole picture to unfold before making conclusions about it even if Bethesda screwed up last gen with their open world games. Hopefully E3 will solve some of the confusions we about the game.

Oh I know what you mean. I agree that things can definitely change over time. I personally don't really see a problem with the graphics myself, largely because I've been gaming since the NES launched and have seen worse graphics that I don't get hung up on them. If what I heard about Fallout is true, it may have something to offer me. I used to just consider it another shooter, but I may have to give it more of a chance than that.

Pete Hines is one of the best in the biz and doesnt let public opinion sway the companies artistic vision. When you do that, you end up spending more time making naysayers happy and less on the game you set out to make. The trailer looked great, in my opinion, and the visuals looked good. People are judging the book by its cover without knowing its content. The fact is, noone knows just how big of an area we will be playing in and just how interactive everything is.

I think the graphics look good. Not great, but good. I would say better then last gen by a bit. The worlds going to be massive. And it looked very smooth. The animations looked pretty decent. A dog walking believe it or not is hard to get looking natural on its own. Look at the CoD dog for an example.

I'm stoked for this game. It's going to be epic no matter what. I'll be happy with a release date at E3. Hopefully

I played FO3 on the PS3 and i had a hard time playing it on that thanks to the bugs and the crashes and what not.

The "it will never work on PS3/XB360" argument just makes me facepalm. That is patronizing. Everyone knows the game would not run on last-gen systems looking like that, but it still doesn't look like the mind-blowing next-gen titles that i felt Oblivion (for instance) was back when it was unveiled in 2005 or something. It was the first time I had seen such great tech in armors reflecting light that way and so much foilage density in an open-world game.

Fallout 4 just looks... kinda like a new Fallout but with better graphics but none of the tech you see in the trailer made me go "wow!" in that same way as when last-gen Bethesda games were shown.

F4 graphic look great to me.
However, I'm a little concern with the amount of visual effect this game will have being that its ruining on an old gamebryo game engine.

I don't know about you guys but I'm having such a hard time liking a game that doesn't have lots of visual effects.

I came to this conclusion today when I saw the batman trailer for the PC with nvidia effects. watching this trailer made me a little jealous of the PC.

Personally speaking, I think current gen hardware isn't powerful enough to meet all of our demands.

Stupid people don't realize that the graphics are great, it's just the character models that are poorly done. The dog looks like it had too much hair gel, and the main character has a pointy butt.

I do think the textures are a bit too pastel smoothy, but that isn't "bad graphics", it's a style direction. It worked great for everything but the main character's suit.

I think the world looks great and the characters have a nice distinct look to them. Love the series as a whole. I'll take solid performance and great story over ground breaking graphics any day. I'm a counsil gammer so I highly expect the game to not look as good as pc does.
As far as the trailer goes maybe, just maybe bethisda doesn't want to deal with all the downgrade harpies in the world and just gave a trailer for achievable early graphics so that they don't have to deal with it and explain themselves... However this article exsists because the graphics hapies are out wanting more! Damn make up your minds! Either a trailer with targeted hopeful graphics or a feasible trailer with good but not great graphics.

I'm playing Fallout 3 currently on Xbox 360 and still amazed at times by the graphics of that game considering everything it does along with the sheer size/scope of the world. Not to mention it came out in 2008. I have no doubt that I will be blown away when I finally have the chance to see Fallout 4 on my PS4. This is one of those franchises that I get particularly excited about come a new entry. I'm very excited for Fallout 4 and can't wait to see gameplay from E3.
