Progressing how? Better graphics is all I've seen from current-gen exclusives, and I can do without a focus on graphics. AI is still just as dumb as ever, if not moreso than previous gens (FEAR still blows most games away). Nothing really has been pushed forward other than polygons.

Hell, just compare Fallout 2 to its successors to see that we've mostly regressed outside of graphics.

Apparently you didn't actually read what CDPR said. They said, The Witcher 3 wouldn't be the same game scale wise, content wise, without consoles. Do consoles in general hold back the medium? Yes and no. Without console sales, people wouldn't be able to make games with the budgets they have. Now, if every console gamer became a PC gamer, then you wouldn't have that problem. But, consoles have benefits over PCs (just like PCs has benefits over consoles), and that will never happen.

No, that's the cost of waiting...you buy a console dirt cheap, you got a ton of great games to play but you aren't necessarily entitled to new games being developed in 2015 and beyond, that's exactly why NEW HARDWARE is made to progress the industry and do more with the medium, not stagnate to let those who chose to wait forever hold progress back so "the lil kiddies can play too". The last generation lasted way too long, and held back developers for for far too long as is.

This would not be a good thing. I like the idea of dropping $300 - 500 on a box that could last you a decade. That's awesome from a consumer standpoint. But, at the end of the day, it's at the expense of what is otherwise a rapidly evolving medium.

I would be very disappointed to hear. That said, if they handle it similar to Forza Horizon 2 was I might be more comfortable with it. Basically hire an outside studio to port over the game you are making. The main team making Fallout 4 is focused only X1, PS4 & PC and not worried about what may or may not work for last gen. Let the hired studio deal with porting and gimping function, etc...as needed to make it run on last gen.

If the game is to bring the changes to the engine necessary, then the entire world and story would have to be different.

Novigrad would not exist on last-gen consoles. We had to make do with small villages like Solitude and Windhelm.

The only way this would work, realistically, is if they did what Ubisoft did and made two completely different games (as with Rogue and Unity).

If Fallout 4 has been made for consoles, it will undoubtedly be far worse than it might otherwise have been.

This is a major disappointment if it holds true. Last gen already had its share of fallout, time to move on and take full advantage of the PS4/XB1 hardware for FO4.

Considering how long it takes them to develop FO games, it would completely suck having to wait another 8 years for FO5 to play a version that *hopefully* takes full advantage of whatever new hardware is in use at that time.

That would be the Gamebryo engine, which Bethesda has been using since Oblivion. (And, fun fact, they accomplished much more demanding stuff with it in Oblivion than they did in ANY of the subsequent games).

If it is indeed a cross-generation game, it's all but-certain Fallout 4 will use Gamebryo, too.

I've never been one to choose graphics over gameplay (like most others) but those Fallout 3 and Skyrim were very ugly games, they were only about 4gb in size which explains a lot but it would be fun to see Bethesda taking advantage of the new gen hardware. NO. I hope not with every fibre of my being. Trying to cludge complex systems into hardware with a tiny amount of ram is why the PS3 versions of Bethesda games came out ass, with the 360 ones not much better when compared to their pc counterparts.

It's "bad enough" letting the PC version be held back by the current consoles, but having the design based around scalability backward to 10 year old hardware is ridiculous and can seriously hold back any sort of ambitious design elements they could consider. There was already a lot of stuff pulled back from Skyrim, crippling Fallout too is not sensible.

Unless they want to be really by the numbers and not do ambitious dynamic stuff.. In which case, that seems a bit boring.

I hope it isnt cross gen, unless they have someone else do the last gen version. It seems like a lot of the bugs were due to all the mailboxes etc that I had stuffed with items . The more items I collected and stashed the buggier it seemed to get. Its amazing that with only 512mb ram they got the game to run at all, a new gen version would most likely play like slowmo after getting a bunch of items and the graphics will have to be toned down a bit also,AI wont be as good etc. Please please be current gen only

Yeah I think it's interesting how upset people are getting that fallout 4 MAY be on a console they don't play on anymore even before the game has been announced or anything from it shown. Just write it off before seeing anything, it's dumb. I like the idea that they're supporting the people who have older consoles, but for nostalgic reasons as I didn't ever have current gen consoles as a kid, I was always a gen behind as my parents didn't see the financial value in buying them (fair enough, it was their money, I was lucky to have anything tbh), I didn't get a current gen console until I was old enough to get a job and buy it myself, that was an OG Xbox.

The fact that games like GTA: V look pretty d@mn good on old systems show that even though its an older system the games can be fun and entertaining.

Do not get me wrong, I'm all for the new systs getting games made that take advantage of its new hardware. But making a game in a series that people want to see more of and play , ignoring such a larger group of still active gamers with the older systems that are still on the shelf still selling to consumers, is better off than going to only use a much smaller user base of new released consoles only?

I do not think developers and publishers want to do that if they want to not reach as many gamers as they can to increase the user base for a franchise.

Hell they may want to release on Mobile platforms to further increase the franchise user player base! What better way..it is a franchise of an IP, on PC the 3 games in the series before the new fallout 3, vegas and now 4 , were released on to the public and it was for older PC's hell 400 MHz CPU PC's could run the tri, fallout 1,2 and tactics : Bo's. Still sold a ton for the game even though the games were old an re-released.

Don't forget GTA V an impressive last gen game from a graphical standpoint, only ran at 30 fps on both current, and last gen hardware. How is last gen dying when Xbox 360 has the Dashboard preview program which is constantly updated? When they are adding new apps weekly and continuing to update the ones they already have. And adding support for up to 4TB of external harddrive usage? They would not be doing that if it was dying. The reason for it is so that game developers can make install discs to allow for them to make larger games for PORTS!!! Dying my buttocks. This is highly doubtful. Having rewatched the game trailer the logos at the end are for PC, XBOXONE, and PS4 only. There are no PS3 or 360 logos so it is unlikely the game will be cross-gen.

Wait a second how in the world would a last gen release hold back current gen? Usually when you still have 2 console markets the main development team works on the new console and a second team or company is tasked with the last gen. There is no reason why they cant make it for Xbox 360 and PS3. They already have the engine, and the game was never the best graphically anyways. Also you do realize this Xbox 360 and PS3 are still popular.

I have a 360 and its constantly receiving new apps and updates via the preview program. And the hardware may be older but the new update allows for up to 4TB of external harddrive use. Which means they can make the game for the 360 with a main disc then have an one ore more install discs. Before the space cap was 250 GB on a 360, now like I said up to 4TB and no system storage requirement. Which means they can make larger games on the system. I dont think Microsoft would spend time doing this for 360 if they did not want games to be made for it. Also the leap from 360 to One as far as graphics is only about 25 to 30% for now. That will change in time, but not now.

So saying that making a last gen will hold back current gen is bogus and untrue. Its about money and if they can make it, they will. I for one will not move to Xbox One until they turn off the 360. By then a used one will be under 200 dollars. And the used game market will be larger and cheaper. No need to update when the console I have still gets the job done. Bethesda would be foolish not to make last gen versions.
