The 8 Worst Uses of DLC in Gaming History

GamesRadar - Elder Scrolls: Oblivion marked the start of a new era of gaming in more ways than one. It brought many into then-new-gen gaming, sold people on the Xbox 360, and notoriously set the bar for insulting DLC. Oblivion’s Horse Armor is a famously poor example of downloadable content, charging players $2.50 / £1.70 for some extra equine protection that did absolutely nothing besides make your four-legged ride glimmer in the sunlight. It quickly becoming a cautionary tale in how not to handle DLC- but that 2006 offense to gamer's wallets seems quaint when compared to some of the downloadable mistakes that followed.

I still think the horse armor takes the cake.

FullmetalRoyale3430d ago (Edited 3430d ago )

I'm not sure they realized how ahead of their time they really were on that one.

gangsta_red3431d ago

The Horse Armor paved the way for what developers could get away with in DLC.

It opened the flood gates and even though the DLC has gotten somewhat better a lot of it is still rip offs and cash grabs.

For me the Asura's Wrath DLC was well worth it, great story and game

Roccetarius3430d ago (Edited 3430d ago )

It doesn't really matter if it's well worth it. They were well aware of selling you a unfinished game, but you're letting them get away with it. Same thing Square did with FF13-2.

Nothing beats the Purple Lightsaber from SWTOR as you had to pay 4.99 for that.

Roccetarius3430d ago (Edited 3430d ago )

Nothing quite beats a unfinished game with true ending DLC. People may praise Bethesda for their messy games, but they made it possible for developers to get away with this.

That's why i find it funny, that one of the free DLC's for Witcher 3 is Horse Armour.

I wish we had a new Command and Conquer.

Vits63d ago

f you haven't already, consider getting 8-Bit Armies or the new 9-Bit Armies. They're made by some of the same folks from the older C&C, with very similar mechanics; it's just the aesthetics that are completely different.

C&C Red Alert 3 and The Saboteur were two different yet completely unforgettable games to me from a better era of EA.
