IGN | Alien: Isolation Review

actually both gave the early gameplay good reviews, but because it kind of drag on the hide-and-seek for too long the gameplay and atmosphere lost its charm later on. Maybe it performs well on the hands-on because of that very reason.
Seems like horror hide-and-seek type of games can't have too long game length, especially if the baddie is already world famous. Maybe it'll be better if it's like amnesia where the hunter is mysterious and of unknown origin, not something starring in hollywood movies.

As a true afficiando of Middle Earth - I didn't just see the movies or read the two main books - I am enjoying the game. But I will take a break from Shadows of Mordor sometime next week...if I can tear myself away - and crack the seal on Alien. I also have to check out Styx.

Well to be honest with you that's what I expected to happen, I had high hopes...

But then again, I had high hopes for Alien Colonial Marines and that game was a disaster...

This one Looked like a much better recreation, but once they took away the shooting part, and went for a one alien scare tactic, instead of a ton of aliens coming for you, I knew they were in trouble.

-having just one alien forces you to try to create stuff for the player to still be entertained when there is no action, and in a video game that's going to be really hard..

-Well sadly I was on the fence about getting this, but now after watching the video on the review I think I'll just pass... /the things he talks about are exactly what I worried about with this one..

I watched my gf play Outlast and I played some of it too. It was "okay". My biggest quirk with the game is that you could just run and run until you find where you need to go next. Then just respawn and sneak past. Where as with Alien I am excited that you have to be sneaky and smart.

No matter what others say, the big outlets tend to be the most objective when they review the game. I like to look at IGN, Gamespot, Gametrailers. Then I look over all the critic reviews at metacritic, filter out the obvious troll reviews. Watch a bunch of gameplay videos and then make my decision.

Let me get this straight, the reviewer plays the game on hard. He gets kills so much that he is just mad at the game and now the game gets a 5.9 score. Wow But the Alien is 99 percent unpredictable al, the sets are perfectly recreated, the fear and tension is there. What's wrong again? Resident Evil 6 was a call of duty zombie quick time glitch fest that gets a better score than Aliens. I don't buy into this review but I will be buying Alien. Sorry ign, the game is not Call of Duty meets Alien first person shooter. You have to really use your brain to play.

Why not rate the game high if that equates to future revenue for the amateur website? Big sites have plenty of revenue and in my opinion are less likely to do this. Actually, from what I've read, even in early articles, the big problem is feeling like no matter what you do, the alien can still kill you.

In games, you have to have some sense of stability with the enemy, otherwise no skill is involved and you only live or die based entirely on luck and what the enemy just decides to do.

I remember an article a month or so ago where the guy said he was hiding in a locker and he even held his breath exactly like you are supposed to, and the Alien still killed him. Yet another time it left him alone.

Again, there has to be some sense of strategy that you can implement, otherwise you are just crossing your fingers and hoping the AI doesn't decide to screw you. At that point, the outcome of the game and whether you beat it is taken entirely out of your hands and you might as well not even be playing anymore.

The gamer has to have some sense of control over the situation, no matter how little.

I know what I like, as do you, as does the reviewer. I don't trust reviews in the way that I see them as facts, but what they actually are, opinions.

So as I'm reading along as I did in the Wolfenstein ign review by Moriarty, for example. He touches on not liking having to press a button to grab ammo. Well I think "that wouldn't/doesn't bother me, good to know". Or "I agree with that".

IMHO it's best to read a review all the way through. I think that numbers at the end make people(not you) unable to accept that it's just an opinion, and that they as a consumer, should really read the words there.

His biggest gripes are what everyone has been worried about. How long can the "being hunted" aspect go on before it becomes stale.

The game being 17-20 hours means they had to add some extra content. This is actually the first I've heard of guns being in the game. I thought I read a while ago that no guns were in the game and it was totally survival based.

Now that I hear about the segment where you need well placed head-shots with an average shooting mechanic seems like filler to me.

Again, his biggest complaint is the length, because sooner or later you'll have to add filler. The game sounds like it drags on too long for the tension aspect alone to keep it fresh.

People are getting mad at IGN because they called out filler. Unbelievable.

Why are you assuming that's what I'm doing? What I'm talking about are the mixed reviews. I was hoping for an undeniably great game that only the most obviously biased or click hungry sites would give anything other than a good score. As it turns out we're getting completely unpredictable reviews, either good or bad with no past indicator of the reviewer disliking this type of game or the site being notorious clickbaiters.

This seems to indicate that the game has a lot to love about it and a lot to hate and that the most likely outcome for most gamers will be a few hours enjoying this game interspersed with a few hours being utterly annoyed by it. It means it's not a game I absolutely have to buy right this minute but can put off until I'm done with my current playload.

It is, however, unarguably extremely repetitive, clichéd, buggy, technically unimpressive, unimaginative, cheesy and incredibly shallow. If you don't mind a game being all of those things that's down to your personal taste but you have to face the fact that your personal tastes are so perverted that most people reviewing things in shorthand terms such as 'good' and 'bad'(bad being shorthand for a game that is all of the things I listed above) are going to oppose your personal definition.

From every preview I've ever seen of this game, there is no way in hell I would have said this game could last almost 15-20 hours.

There is only so much you can do with the setting before you start to pad the playtime with extra nonsense. They needed to justify a $60 pricetag when this could or in my opinion SHOULD have been a $30 game with about 6-8 hours of content.

Everyone couldn't believe it when Aliens: Colonial Marines got panned. It still sold well because people didn't believe the big sites, they so desperately held onto the few ok reviews from the no name sites and the game ended up selling well even though it was garbage. This looks like the exact same thing will happen, people just don't want to believe the game sucks. Why would two reputable reviewers from two big sites lie(IGN & Gamespot)? What's their motivation?

At the end of the day reviewers are just human. If they don't like the game they will give it low scores.

After seeing other reviews and watching that pewdiepie playing it on youtube I've seen enough to know I will like the game. Although I may be biased as Alien and Aliens are my favourite movies of all time.

Reviews don't stop me from buying my games, ign was never good at reviewing games (can't count how many games they gave low scores to that turned out to be really great games that sold good etc..).

As much as I love Alien and Aliens and that whole universe I was afraid this game was going to come down to this. IGN looks like it was confirming what I thought was the case. Since I'd seen the first footage I don't think it would be fun to run around and backtrack for hours and hours on end. Hide and seek would get so old. Maybe if this had some action elements other than fighting androids here and there.

A real shame, the game looks incredible to any Fan of the movie.

In all seriousness though, the review is terrible. It makes good sounding things sound bad.

The Xenomorph being generally unscripted sounds/looks awesome - because it's not as scary if you think you know when and where the Xenomorph will strike, constantly being on the edge is what makes a survival horror.

As for the length, it sounds like they're making it out to be a bad thing. 15-20 hours of gameplay for a modern non-RPG game is excellent, especially as some publishers like to chop games down and sell parts of it as DLC. Granted, we have the Ripley and Nostromo DLC, but that's not part of the main story.

I booked a day off work for this and I can't wait.

Exactly.........Not knowing when and where the alien will try to get you will have anybody's nerves and fear on edge 100x over and having you scared to move anywhere because even if the alien shows up on the tracker it doesn't mean it's gonna be in that area all the time.

Thank God for the early streamers on ps4. They saved me $63.00. This game looks insanely boring. It's the same hide n seek bs as Outlast. You can even hide in lockers until the enemy goes away. What excitement!

LOL they mad ?! Alien Isolation deserves at least 8/10 personally i would give it 8.5/10 and this is only few hours playing at a friend... for all alien(s) franchise fans out there this is a must try, cant wait to play it on my PC :D

I was able to pick up my copy early, thx to my local mom and pop game shop! About an hour or so into it on PS4 and I am pretty impressed so far with the whole feel of it! Game is mostly positive across the board with 8s and 9s, so don't listen too much to ign. The reviewer stated his negatives because he played it on hard difficulty, which caused alot of deaths and frustration. His own fault, so don't bash the rest of the game because of your mistake! This is not the typical norm of a game.

It definately feels like the first Alien movie. I think they might have finally nailed it for once. I have not seen the alien yet, but man the tension and build up of stealthing around with creepy atmosphere and soundtrack is awesome!

It's what made the first Alien movie so classic. People looking for COD style gameplay need to look elsewhere! This game is all about tension! I'm digging it so far and graphics are some of the best this gen. 9/10 without a doubt!

Never liked the sound of this game, when I found out only ONE Alien would be hunting the player, it sounded instantly boring.... I just wish they would hand development to a truly kicka$$ talented developer, & stick to the action fps formula that the bets games in this IP's history has spawned....
Make another Aliens vs Predator, for multiplayer, BUT, add awesome single player campaigns for both species & possibly marines... Each campaign would only need to be 6-7hrs, & that coupled with some awesome Alien vs Predator vs Marine, with a fair balanced feel, would kick serious butt for me..

I knew this game would be garbage, I said it months ago.

The days of decent single players are over. You can't play a scary game when it quickly becomes 'boring'.

They should of offered full online support to up the difficulty and offered a co-op of 2 players make each other work together to open doors by spliting them up or both need to meet up and tackle the spaceship area at different points etc.

You can still create a single player experience with the help of friends online you just needed to split them all up for most of the gameplay whilst talking to each other.

The rest love the game for it's atmosphere and authenticity to the Alien franchise.

The cons don't even sound that bad. Frustrating alien AI is a good thing because the humans aren't supposed to stand a chance against a Xenomorph. And who ever complained about a game being too long!
