VR is finally happening guys!! It's been a long time coming!

Agent Smith3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

How fitting for virtual reality

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

GrizzliS19873724d ago

playing games, taking tours of planets, real estate, examining road maps through google, inspecting virtual stores and products on shelves, 3D items rotating them any way, virtual sex, this will change........EVERYTHING O.O *dramatic music*

GarrusVakarian3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Apparently they are working with NASA and there will be a Mars demo for the PS4 VR. Imagine walking on "Mars" with the PS4 VR.

My god...........................

This feels like E3 all over again.

iGAM3R-VIII3724d ago

FIrst prototype goes back to Fall 2010 which is long ago. Never knew, but anyway this looks promising, it's sleek as well, love it and day 1 for me if and when it comes out

morganfell3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

List of people already working on this - Crytek, Havok, Unity, Epic, CriWare. More here on the slide: http://imgm.24liveblog.com/...

scott1823724d ago

When does their conference start???

morganfell3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Conference is going on now. No video but a live blog: http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

The current devkit is 1080p. 90 degree field of view. 1000Hz tracking - and full 360 degrees rotation tracking. DualShock 4 and PS Move both work with the same camera. It's quite obvious that the PS4 was designed with VR in mind. That's the reason for that lightbar on the DS4

The kit has a true spatial sound system, synthesised by simulating the human ear. It can simulate 60 virtual speakers around you. It supports custom headsets.

There's a social screen feature - it splits the signal onto the main TV. So when you're playing a game, people can see what you're playing through an undistorted mirror of the image.

Eve Valkyrie also runs on this - w00t! Can you say Eve on the PS4?

OMG! here we go! PS4 is the future and the future is now! PS4 + VR + Drive club and hopefully COD + BF4/5 + Thief + Witcher and lots more incoming. woot! bring it on Sony! The age of next next gen is just around the corner... PS4 greatness awaits! BTW codename Morpheus is perfect, Matrix would have been nice as well. lol! They said NASA was working with it for a while, well they should have named it project... Armstrong... hehehe...

4Sh0w3724d ago

That's pretty cool, I love new tech can't wait to see some games running.

Naga3724d ago

I'm so glad that Agent Smith was the one to make that comment. This pleases me deeply.

webeblazing3724d ago

they did everything i would expect them to. glad they got 1080p screen and focusing on the things OR was concerned about. maybe pick this up if i get a ps4 at the end of this gen. this thing is definitely not a eye sour sony knows how to make a product look elegant

_FantasmA_3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Would have preferred Neo. Neo also speels ONE, which would be a jab at M$ cause they are not the One. PS4 is the ONE!

And to all those people saying that we won't wear it. Yes we will. People wear big ass ugly Dre headphones and big gaming headsets, why would they not wear this. This is something you use at your house, not while riding your bike in traffic.

AgentSmithPS43724d ago

"The great Morpheus. We meet at last." - the original "Smith."

The best thing I've seen so far is that this Morpheus looks "simple" like it was designed to be priced well.

Ares84HU3724d ago

I find this whole thing very amusing.

People complayined about 3D because of the glasses. But this big bulky thing doesn't bother anyone?

I'm more interested in the holographic technology than this.

thehitman13983724d ago

Sony actually said it's not named Morpheus because of the Matrix, but it's named after a Greek god of dreams, FYI. Although I wished they would have named it after Morpheus for the Matrix, and that's what I'm going to call it from now on and after I buy it :-)

What pill will you take?...

darthv723724d ago

I have wanted vr since seeing lawnmower man. I want it to do better than 3d has but call me selfish. I just want sony to really be strict on quality control. If that means all games going through a serious approval process...so be it.

I dont want this to be another money grab for devs looking to put vr in everything they make. #noVRshovelware

erathaol3724d ago

You all disappoint me. This thread should have started with Matrix jokes.

:(

Boody-Bandit3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

Ares84HU

"People complayined about 3D because of the glasses. But this big bulky thing doesn't bother anyone?"

I don't know many Sony consumers that complained about having to wear glasses.

I own 5 3D display and all of them require glasses. I have no problem wearing them. Especially for my projector in my theater. 3d on a 12ft screen is immersive to say the least.

I can't wait to get my hands on this VR device from Sony.

fr0sty3724d ago

Ares84HU

3D glasses cause headaches due to constant flickering (active glasses) and do not have any sort of head tracking. In addition, the 3D image you are seeing is tiny. The two cannot be compared.

theoneb3724d ago

But but but I thought Sony was broke? They must have got the money for Morpheus from Morpheus in the Matrix lol

deafdani3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

I hope that statement ("VR is finally happening!") isn't only because of this Sony announcement.

Oculus Rift has already been in development for a while, you know.

Now it's just a matter of time to see which company manages to make VR a mainstream thing, if that ever happens. Sony could have the edge here over Oculus because of their power and size as a company.

hello123724d ago

Microsoft has a product like this too. I expect an announcement at E3 now in light of this revealing by Sony. Good times for gamers-new technology is exciting.

The technology has seemingly been developed concurrently with a project called "Fortaleza," which translates to "fortress" in Portuguese. The projects are expected to result in a "suite of experiences unique to Microsoft's Xbox products," the report reads. This follows another rumor from last week that indicated Sony might announce its own virtual reality headset, as well as news from today showing Valve's continued support of VR through Steam.

DeadIIIRed3724d ago

I think Oculus should be extremely happy over this. They are PC based and Sony said they don't plan to have any real PC support. The main benefit though is that developers can now worry less about sinking money into VR development for both PC and PS4 and not receiving a decent return.

webeblazing3724d ago

Naw OR gonna be better when someone asked about the ps4 performance and the effects on the game and they dodge the question. It should be a given that OR gonna be better when everything they said and been doing Sony just caught up. If you want better tech your gonna have to pay for it, and even with that ps4 hardware is not gonna give you the same kinda of gfx in 3d you think your gonna be getting.

I good though. I Dont think anyone would mind if they tone down the gfx to get better performance.

LKHGFDSA3724d ago

Oculus is vaporware, not only will it never come out but it doesn't have to, and after it comes out if it does, there's no need to create games for it.
With Playstation, they make their money from the games, so it's guaranteed to get support and an actual release.

beebap3724d ago

I dont expect a annoncement from microsoft any time soon they have not been working on this technology as long as sony. Also not sure how they plan to do it with kinect if even they do as it a lot harder and not sure if possible on kinect. Playstation already has been movong in this direction move now ds4 with camera. What value is the camera now? Not a bad price for optional extra that makes so much possible. Sony has been really smart as one of them mentioned it almost as if the camera has been made with vr in mind. Wink wink. I have the move controller, ds4 and camera just have to wait on vr headset. I love technology. Also I believe to can use any headphones with it? Or did I pick that up wrong? If so I can use sony pulse elite then.

imt5583724d ago

@KNWS

Any proof that Microsoft has VR in development? First voice about MS's VR was a few days ago when i read Wall Street's article about Microsoft' VR. Well, MS is late to the party again. I presume that somewhere in 2015. Sony will release VR to mass market.

It's been happening since occulus riff

Anyway gonna be so cool to use on console!
Hope price is right tho

lifeisgamesok3724d ago

That's a great name it made me think of the Matrix

Great job Sony!

PSVita3724d ago

No offense but Duh...

Angeljuice3724d ago

@PSVita

Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams, anyone with any kind of education would realise that the character in the movie was named after the god.
Believe it or not, most people in the world when hearing the name 'Morpheus' think of the god first and foremost (although I very much doubt that's the case on N4G).

Blasphemy3724d ago

@angeljuice i actually didnt know there was a greek god named morpheus until today

lelo3724d ago

I'm a gamer with simple tastes. For me it's just, controller (or KB/Mouse), consoles (or PC) and TV... and that's it.

All these gadgets do nothing for me: Virtual Reality Headset, Kinect, Wii, etc... Mehhhh.

GarrusVakarian3724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

But all this will do is add to the immersion, you can still play with a controller. Just imagine laying back on your bed with a controller in your hands and a VR headset on playing Fallout 4.......you would be completely immersed in that game world....much more than you would playing on a regular TV.

Listing it along with gimmicks like the wiimote, kinect and ps move isn't fair imo...this is much more interesting/promising than those.

4Sh0w3724d ago

Agreed Lukas, these are exciting times because I feel like we are on the edge of discovering new immersion in games. I never understand the short-sighted view of "I'll just stick with my controller". That's fine, to each his own, I just don't get it as a gamer we are usually the ones seeking new experiences more than the general public.

bleedsoe9mm3724d ago

@Lukas_Japonicus oculus rift will have porn ...they win !

Wow, Ive never seen this.
It is sure to succeed...
Wait....
Virtual boy... Sega VR...
Oh well, it is a fun idea, but Illumiroom was much cooler

dcj05243724d ago

Wait...
Oculus Rift.

Update your info man.

nerdman673724d ago (Edited 3724d ago )

I was naming failed VR headsets.
There are much more, I assure you.
The Oculus hasnt been released, and therefore has not failed.

@PS Vita I said the idea is cooler, not that it is cooler.
Id much rather the world around me be part of the game than put a big thing on my head to see a screen up close

PSVita3724d ago

Illumiroom? Yeah all you need is 3 projectors and no window....

LordMaim3724d ago

Wow. Neither of those were remotely close to the same thing. You're actually comparing the Virtual Boy's red and black LED pseudo-3D system to a full immersion head tracking VR environment like either Morpheus or Oculus Rift. And then turning around and praising Illumiroom? Seriously?

the lawnmower man X10...I can dig it! But this thing is gonna be expensive as HELL!

Bathyj3724d ago

I was hoping it would be a metal spike in the back of my head.

But man, this is exciting. I think it was late 80's the first (and only) time I tried VR and the graphics looked like a Dire Straights film clip.

This really could change everything. Goodbye real world.

Sci0n3724d ago

my PS4 and PS Cam is ready!

thehitman13983724d ago

For everybody that is commenting on the name for it, Sony said that it named it Morpheus after some greek god. I would have loved it if they named it after "red pill?blue pill" Morpheus, but they didn't. So let's try to act like grown ups and not make ourselfs look like fools with random matrix jokes that don't even pertain to the name.

Blasphemy3724d ago

pretty sure the movie got the idea from the same place

ITPython3724d ago

This is absolutely amazing! Sony just keeps raising the bar by leaps and bounds. Kinect, eat your heart out!

Also some really good news when I read this:

"will support custom headphones and wearing glasses"

Hopefully custom headphones means we can use our current headphones. No reason to let my well broken-in $160 pair of Sennheiser phones goto waste.

No_Limit3724d ago

And MS counter with Project Neo for the One!!! :-)

Blasphemy3724d ago

would be hilarious if they did that

Angeljuice3724d ago

I'd just like to point out here that 'Morpheus' refers to the god of dreams not the character in the Matrix (who was also named after the god).

The Matrix would have been a great film if it wasn't ruined by Pinocciano Reeves (the most wooden actor in Hollywood).

DoctorJones3724d ago

It was a great film even with having Keanu in it. It was one of the most original films I'd ever seen up until that point, still great to watch now as it ever was.

The series went downhill after the first, but the first one was an amazing film.

Matt6663724d ago

Dear Sony please make smell-a-vision TV's

Kidmyst3724d ago

When I first played the first Myst game, this is something I wanted back then. Loved the Myst franchise and style of game and hope to see exploration puzzle games like that with this. I wonder if Sony will bring Home to the PS4 with Morpheus.

imt5583724d ago

Imagine PS4+VR bundle!!! :-)

gazgriff2k123724d ago

o my god i want skyrim on ps4 with vr and move support voice commands and 5 more years on life expectancy please

bigfish3724d ago

This is what the kinect should have been

3-4-53723d ago

This is kind of like what Game Genie did for NES in the 90's.

It allowed you to play all your games in a completely different way and allowed you to experience, that which you may not have been skilled enough to prior.

Obviously it's a different, but hopefully you get my point.

NobleTeam3603723d ago

Glad it's coming. Now we wait for Sword Art Online level of VR.

To be fair, It look's more comfy then the OR... Hmm.

Now, For a price point and a possible future launch date.

Abriael3724d ago

Hhaha "Morpheus" is a male name though :D

stuna13724d ago

Should I take the blue pill or the red one? I want to see how deep this rabbit hole goes!

Sony is killing it! Hope I don't have to sell any internal organs to afford one though.

bloodybutcher3724d ago

Take the blue pill.your lady will be happy ;-)

stuna13724d ago

No need too, I'm fine in that department! Why don't you take it? Just remember to see your doctor if the effects last longer than 4 hours! Lol.

Goku7813724d ago

VR is revolutionary, not titan fall.

bleedsoe9mm3724d ago

even thinking about titanfall during a sony announcement

Jeff2573724d ago

Imagine Titanfall 2 on PS4 using the VR Headset. Now that would be amazing.

nerdman673724d ago

Yeah, VR has always done so well in the past, huh?

dcj05243724d ago

Yup, the Oculus Rift Dev kit was amazing last year and Development Kit 2 is coming this year. Sony VR headset is being praised and Microsoft has some thing under wraps too. So to answer your question yes and it's only UP from here.

mydyingparadiselost3724d ago

That was a long time ago it's been almost 20 years since bathroom sized set ups at state fairs. A lot has changed with customer tech in that time and the push for VR by numerous companies is telling of that change. I do admit there will be problems though, especially in the beginnings. People with motion sickness will probably vomit on sight, I'm certain some people will get feelings of distortion or vertigo with certain situations or prolonged use but for the main mass of gamers and casual users this is going to be amazing. I'm cautious but REALLY optimistic about what this means for gaming and entertainment in general.

marlinfan103724d ago

you really feel the need to bring up titanfall? lol shouldn't you be excited about the VR? man I'm a xbox guy and I'm pumped for this thing yet you're over here still trying to trash anything xbox related

Kribwalker3724d ago

VR headset is so dumb. You're seriously gonna sit there and wear that thing. Even when I buy my ps4, won't be buying one of those. Would rather play my games with my $2500 home theatre and 55"tv then wear one of those

Dfooster3724d ago

I can finally play Half Life Alyx.

mariopasta68d ago

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts68d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos68d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts68d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa68d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
