The current devkit is 1080p. 90 degree field of view. 1000Hz tracking - and full 360 degrees rotation tracking. DualShock 4 and PS Move both work with the same camera. It's quite obvious that the PS4 was designed with VR in mind. That's the reason for that lightbar on the DS4

The kit has a true spatial sound system, synthesised by simulating the human ear. It can simulate 60 virtual speakers around you. It supports custom headsets.

There's a social screen feature - it splits the signal onto the main TV. So when you're playing a game, people can see what you're playing through an undistorted mirror of the image.

Sony actually said it's not named Morpheus because of the Matrix, but it's named after a Greek god of dreams, FYI. Although I wished they would have named it after Morpheus for the Matrix, and that's what I'm going to call it from now on and after I buy it :-)

I don't know many Sony consumers that complained about having to wear glasses.

I own 5 3D display and all of them require glasses. I have no problem wearing them. Especially for my projector in my theater. 3d on a 12ft screen is immersive to say the least.

I can't wait to get my hands on this VR device from Sony.

3D glasses cause headaches due to constant flickering (active glasses) and do not have any sort of head tracking. In addition, the 3D image you are seeing is tiny. The two cannot be compared.

Oculus Rift has already been in development for a while, you know.

I think Oculus should be extremely happy over this. They are PC based and Sony said they don't plan to have any real PC support. The main benefit though is that developers can now worry less about sinking money into VR development for both PC and PS4 and not receiving a decent return.

Oculus is vaporware, not only will it never come out but it doesn't have to, and after it comes out if it does, there's no need to create games for it.
With Playstation, they make their money from the games, so it's guaranteed to get support and an actual release.

Morpheus is the Greek god of dreams, anyone with any kind of education would realise that the character in the movie was named after the god.
Believe it or not, most people in the world when hearing the name 'Morpheus' think of the god first and foremost (although I very much doubt that's the case on N4G).

I'm a gamer with simple tastes. For me it's just, controller (or KB/Mouse), consoles (or PC) and TV... and that's it.

All these gadgets do nothing for me: Virtual Reality Headset, Kinect, Wii, etc... Mehhhh.

But all this will do is add to the immersion, you can still play with a controller. Just imagine laying back on your bed with a controller in your hands and a VR headset on playing Fallout 4.......you would be completely immersed in that game world....much more than you would playing on a regular TV.

Listing it along with gimmicks like the wiimote, kinect and ps move isn't fair imo...this is much more interesting/promising than those.

Yup, the Oculus Rift Dev kit was amazing last year and Development Kit 2 is coming this year. Sony VR headset is being praised and Microsoft has some thing under wraps too. So to answer your question yes and it's only UP from here.

That was a long time ago it's been almost 20 years since bathroom sized set ups at state fairs. A lot has changed with customer tech in that time and the push for VR by numerous companies is telling of that change. I do admit there will be problems though, especially in the beginnings. People with motion sickness will probably vomit on sight, I'm certain some people will get feelings of distortion or vertigo with certain situations or prolonged use but for the main mass of gamers and casual users this is going to be amazing. I'm cautious but REALLY optimistic about what this means for gaming and entertainment in general.

Oculus Rift can, so I don't see any reason for this device to not be able to do the same, theoretically speaking.

Now, whether Sony will implement it or not in the final design remains to be seen. They could scale down the resolution a bit to make it more affordable or something, although I think it will be full 1080p. They will want their games on PS4 to look stunning on the device.

However, if these devices are successful commercially, it would allow the makers to keep improving the technology behind said devices in order to make them smaller and more comfortable.

Kinect is a gimmick in video games because it has yet to prove worth.

VR has been around for a long time and has consistently been hyped, because when it's finally achieved, it amounts to that immersion that we all want. Occulus Rift already has been getting great feedback for its ridiculous immersion, and would be getting ripped apart by now if it was a gimmick.

Gamers want it. PC gamers are getting it, PS4 gamers are getting it. Now we'll have to wait and see how Microsoft responds.

I saw this coming a few years ago when they released their personal 3d viewer. I was thinking they had everything they needed, playstation, tracking tech, and a headset. They needed to figure out how to integrate the tech into one unit though. It looks like they really perfected the design on this. If affordable, this could be a game changer for shooters.

I hope this can at least come in at a starting point of $400.00, but for those who still don't have a PS4 camera maybe they will package the camera with the headset? Whenever MS releases their VR device (Project Fortaleza) they won't need to package their camera since KINECT 2.0 is packaged already. Now Nintendo it's your turn at Virtual Boy 2.0 :-)

My problem with this VR approach, is the headset itself. Id much rather game on a nice TV, with a good surround sound setup. Also alot easier when gaming with a group of friends.

cant help but think of ps home vr edition coming to ps4 when this thing launches.

Yeah I'd say it's wishful thinking. PS Home was a proof of concept for PSN, it showed and tested that alot of people could interact online with minigames and people chatting at the same time.
I think it would be really cool to have a PS Home for the PS4 with VR. It's such a simple concept, it wouldn't be hard to make.
But the problem is Home wasn't that successful, most gamers didn't really like it.

I really hope they're serious about this.
One concern is whether they'll release this before or after the Oculus Rift, I think it should come out earlier since there's a huge demand for it.
Imagine if this Project Morpheus came out first, they could easily absorb all the hype the Oculus has been building up.

I've been waiting 25yrs for this announcement! The PS4 is set to become my favorite console of all time. Not only is it set to finally deliver 1080p gaming with solid frame rates and high quality AA (something I've been waiting for since the PS3 was first released) but also affordable, consumer grade VR!

SONY are pulling out all the stops this gen! What else can they possibly have up their sleeve?

I wonder if MS will invest more into the Illumiroom concept because of this.
I think both are fantastic Ideas and are technology I'd love to see advanced and implemented in home game consoles.

This is great for those who don't have Big TV screens. Who needs one when you have this? it also would be fantastic to take on trips. But I don't know about always having that sitting on my face. (though it's a small price to pay!)
Illumiroom looks amazing too and would be great for making it feel like you're actually inside the environment of the game in that Danger Room/Holodeck kind of way. But I don't know if projection Technology is where it needs to be to truly make it work.
But, with work, these could both be a step forward toward a fantastic future in gaming.

I'm glad to see that all the companies are pushing this innovation. It was smart for Sony to announce theirs first, that way it appears that they were the first console to actually develop this, however, MS has had patents for this tech for years, and it was in development for far longer than that before reaching the patent stage. Based on the patent they released last year (on top of the earlier ones). I'd say MS's best bet now is to sit back and refine it, make sure it does everything that it is aimed at doing, then release that. Take the hit for not releasing first, but release the better product.

It's a shame how many people above insist that MS hasn't worked on this at all...and in at least one case, pointed to an article as proof that they haven't...but that article even said that they've been working on it for years...apparently that poster didn't read the article...just the headline.
