Review: Dark Souls II - MKGaming

MKGaming - "To beat this game is a staggering proposition. Your first run will see you up against the world, with no idea what’s coming next, or where the best items are. You’ll run in circles, get lost for hours, or be stuck on a boss for what feels like an eternity, and feel your own mind going hollow. But then, something will click, and it makes sense. Joy will overcome you, as you work out the trick to a certain area, or finally best that boss. Dark Souls II asks a lot of you, and will never hold your hand, but the more you give to the game, the more you will get out of it.

But now the big question. Is it better than Dark Souls? Honestly, I couldn’t tell you. I love both games to pieces, and Dark Souls II is an incredible sequel, building upon everything that makes Dark Souls great. Sure, it’s hard, but it’s fair, and besting it might be the most fulfilling gaming experience you have for a long time."

I feel like if this game was released during the mega mans, everyone wouldn't focus on its difficulty. It . Would b standard fare. Instead, they woukd focus on its depth and immersion and the way in which it grabs you and never lets go.

Its more than just difficulty. And if u play it over and over like we used to do with every game we played, it isnt really all that hard.

Kos-Mos3723d ago

Hard enough for 99.9% of the noobs playing this generations crapski games.

Summons753723d ago

The difficulty adds something though. When your first playing the game you know nothing and you are going to mess up. You have to overcome that gamerrage that most gamers get now because games are too easy and learn from your mistake. Megaman wasn't difficult in the sense where you screw up but have to learn the level. With the Souls games, sure you have to learn item placement and enemy movement and animations to help you fight but human error is still there. Even if you know the move set of a boss, anything could happen in a split second to distract you (sneeze, doorbell, wrong button) and you end up dead.

However, I agree a lot of people focus too much on the difficulty without realizing the depth of the games.

I wont lie the game did not grab me at first and I had to redo my character because being a deprived was pissing me off lol, because I had no idea where anything was and it just got annoying. I restarted as a swordsman and went for a dex build (something I usually did in DkS), and have been hooked since especially after trying out coop and the bell tower covenant. The multiplayer is just addicting and rewarding. I was surprised to actually think it was difficult, because when I got used to DkS I was able to handle DeS just as well, but going to 2 felt like there was something to learn again.

It's not hard, it just has a steep learning curve. It's either learn or die again and again.

I thought a 10/10 was reserved for the best of best that's only seen once in a blue moon yet we've had 2 games with issues getting a 10 these last few days, it's no wonder devs feel they can get away with releasing half assed unfinished projects.

agreed. i really like DS2 but it's camera can be a real pain...sometimes i feel like i'm fighting that as much as i am the enemies.

StrawberryDiesel4203723d ago

Well it has an average score of above 90 on Metacritic if I'm not mistaken. Some of those tens are justified there chief.

If there ever was a perfect game I would say that Dark Souls 2 would be in the running for it.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer88d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville88d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

I just made my character look like Chuck Norris.

qalpha175d ago

All the bosses are only from Dark Souls. No Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Demon Souls
