GTA IV online is down

PS3Fanboy writes: "If you are a proud owner of Grand Theft Auto IV on the PS3, then you might not be so proud to know that the online multi-player mode is down. Or, at least it appears to be so for PS3 patrons. Numerous players have received errors upon attempting to connect; this blogger included has not been able to get the multi-player to work. An error message pops up: "Cannot connect to game provider, please try again." Hopefully, Rockstar can get things running soon. Wouldn't want to upset the GTA IV crowd, if you know what we mean. In the meantime, get back to the single player game. We'll keep you posted as we find out more."

Hm, interesting. I wonder if it's overloaded, or if they're just taking the servers down for some fixes/updates/whatever. After all, MOST people are either at work or school.

I wonder how long until GTA4 pulls a CoD4 and brings down XBox Live.

Can XBL survive the combined wrath of GTA4 and CoD4? This weekend will be an interesting one.

If Infinity Ward was really mean, they'd make this a double XP weekend!

BenzMoney5860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

Microsoft stated last week that they doubled the capacity of XBL during that shutdown last Monday, so I'm hoping things will continue to run smoothly. I still have about 6 hours to go before I'll be logging in for the first time and I'd like to test out some multiplayer tonight!

As for the PS3 issues, it's anyone's guess. Reports last week said that Rockstar is using Gamespy servers for GTA4...?

sonarus5860d ago

Is this for everybody or for some because this is my first time hearing of this

JasonPC360PS3Wii5860d ago

So far so good for Live, been green all day.

BenzMoney5860d ago

Good to hear! I'm planning on pulling off some epic heists and drive-bys with my boys tonight.

jackdoe5860d ago

That really depends. If EVERYONE who bought GTAIV on the 360 decided to play online today, it will probably bring down Live, but I somehow doubt everyone will want to play online once they get the game. Its all about the single player.

dan-boy5860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

man it's a shame that we got invited out for dinner tonite....especially as most of my pals are all having late nites lol.

so if this is a problem, then it's a ps3 specific problem because live is having it....and large i mite add! i've chopped my friends list to the mid 30ish...and over half are all on gta.

gamesR4fun5860d ago

psn is fine just gta4 servers

funny thing is they were working fine last night talk about insane DM freaking nutz with just 8 guys lol

Hope they get it back up tonight!

sonarus5860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

wrong post.

Blackcanary5860d ago

My friend told me that live came down this morning from the mid night launch when every one was playing online but i think they fixed it.

I'm having this problem on my PS3 but it doesn't bother me to much didn't buy the game for online play.

Timesplitter145860d ago

Well I've been playing online on my PS3 for the last 8 hours. I dunno before that but it's all smooth for me

Bloodwar5859d ago (Edited 5859d ago )

Look, I've checked the Xbox forums to see how bad the Live issue is. I keep hearing the Sony side say how the forums on Sony's website are lit up with the issue and some of them saying its happening to Live as well, or a software gltich of some sort. I only once on launch night had the third of the first three online matches freeze up on the score board but we could all still talk to each other. I turned off the console and turned it on again, and it wasnt an issue again. I'm not saying that it is not happening to the 360 but what I am saying is that the forums are not saying it.

And there were 150 people on the GTA portion of the forums as of 1-30-08 at 1:20 pm EST US. But they were probably at work browsing any news GTA related, not complaining about GTA on Xbox Live apparently. Just informing everyone what I've noticed. Xbox Live members, please correct me if I am wrong. Link the xbox.com forum where actual Live members are talking about it.

Lots of issues for PS3 owners today with GTA IV. I would think that with a game this huge they would have done more testing.

Silellak5860d ago

"Servers being down" has nothing to do with testing. The servers could quite legitimately be down for repair or simply overloaded. It's hard to stress-test your game without a large multiplayer beta ala CoD4.

As for the freezing issue, well, there are any number of articles to discuss that in, and this isn't one of them. Suffice it to say, you're right in that Rockstar really should've caught such an issue if it exists.

I almost wonder if developers this gen aren't bothering to test every iteration of SKU for each console, because they're so used to writing for a console once and calling it a day.

Monchichi0255860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

This is turning into a Nightmare for the PS3! First the Freezing, now This!!!

I'm gonna be so Mad if I can't play online when I get Home from Work!!!! GRRR!!!!!!!

And No, it is not down for maintenence! You really think they would be dumb enough to do Maintenence on the servers today???

JasonPC360PS3Wii5860d ago

Your right though, they should test everything, and for every situation. A game like this that has the potential of selling 8 million in a day could have used more preparation. Microsoft has learned from this the hard way, with Halo 3 and COD4, so they prepared for it. Sony has no excuse, they should have taken the lessons from Microsoft. There are so many different console SKU's out with different manufacturers, they should have tested them all.

Silellak5860d ago

What does Sony have to do with this?

If the fault lies anywhere, it's with Rockstar.

Monchichi0255860d ago

It's not Sony's fault because they are not the one's who own the server. I blame Rockstar more then do them.

But then again, Sony should have taken control of the servers in the firstplace so things like this wouldn't happen!

JasonPC360PS3Wii5860d ago

Rockstar has released this game on the PS3, which is made by Sony. 50% rockstar 50% Sony = both to blame, and if this is only affecting certain PS3's then the blame falls squarly on Sony's shoulder. If this problem is affecting all PS3 SKU's then it's a coop of blame, that should be sorted out as quickly as possible.

Wildarmsjecht5860d ago

It's a problem thats affecting both 360s and PS3. Rockstar has no idea whats up with it atm, but are trying what they can. Read the cr4pton of news surrounding it that details a call to customer support who knows of the issue and still don't know whats up, but DO know however, it;s not just some PS3s, but also some 360s. Now, whether or not you choose to take that bit of information into consideration next time you post on the matter is up to you. Facts are all over.

About the server issue. It could very well be that R* took the servers down to beef them up. Sony isn't taking control of the servers, they hardly, if ever do so when it's not a first party title or one they've had a major hand in developing or is completely catered to their system. To blame them for that is just nitpicking and just edging towards Fanboyism. Hell, if anything it could be that so many people who purchased the game last week and waited to get online now, and people who camped out, and those who waited till today to pick it up decided to get in on some multiplayer mayhem and Boom, server go crash. It's any number of possiblities, but please present facts.

Silellak5860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

"Correct me if I'm wrong"

Okay. You're wrong.

Sony has nothing to do with this. They provided the console. It's up to Rockstar to properly write the game for, and test the game on, that console.

It is not Sony's fault if Rockstar failed to locate an issue that may occur with certain SKUs of the console. It's not like GTA4 was already out, and then Sony released a system that the game is supposed to run on.

That's like saying a PC game only runs on ATI cards, and it's NVidia's fault for not supporting the game, not the game's fault for not supporting NVidia.

If Sony had released an SKU AFTER GTA4 came out and GTA4 had trouble running on it, you MIGHT have a point. But that's not the case.

@Below:

Microsoft RUNS XBox Live. Not Rockstar. THEY alone control ALL of the XBL Servers. So yes, it's their fault when XBL goes down.

However, I was talking about the freezing issue, not the online-being-down. I actually don't know who controls the GTA4 servers for the PS3's version of GTA4. Someone said Sony or Rockstar is going through Gamespy, but I can't speak either way.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

It seems to me that When COD4, Halo 3, or high holiday sales make Live go down it's Microsofts fault, but that doesn't apply to Sony. Many PS3 fans (not you Silellak) on this site are quick to comment and judge MS when Live is affected by high traffic or game design, but when the same thing occurs with the PS3 it's "How is it Sony's fault?"

Porky Pig5860d ago

Just give it up,not only has Silellak proven your argument to be wrong, you just continue to display immaturity that is,to be truthful, shameful for any person over 13years of age.

Hit the agree button if you like Pie,hit the disagree button if you don't like Pie.

Monchichi0255860d ago (Edited 5860d ago )

I was one of the people to blame MS in December when their servers went down.

But now that I think of it, sony is to blame for this as well. Unlike MS, Sony CHOSE not to service online servers for online gaming. This way they did not have to charge for online play.

If this is what is going to happen with Sony's online infrustructure, I'm glad MS charges for Live. I rather pay a small fee for something that is reliable then what is currently happening with the PS Network.
You see, MS was caught with there pants down in December, but were able to go back and fix things so it wouldn't ever happen again.
Sony does not have that luxury as they don't control the servers. This can happen over and over again if the game companys don't step up and Sony wouldn't have anyway of fixing it.....

But let's hope this is only a one shot thing! (Praying!)

Swedish gaming mag Gamereactor said that there are MAJOR DIFFERENCES between the 2 version

http://www.gamereactor.se/r...

Swedish Gamereactor mentioned in their 10/10 review that they were pretty surprised regarding the difference between the PS3 and 360-versions. The PS3-version features better colours, contrast, load times and what looks to be better resolution textures. The game also looks sharper and has a more stable fps.

IGN

http://www.n4g.com/NewsCom-...

"For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud".

X360 version has FR dips too . more frequent than the PS3 version
"Past GTA titles have had mild-to-serious framerate issues and technical glitches, because the games were trying to do far more than the PlayStation 2 could handle. While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing. "

EGM ---"PS3 version looks slightly more vibrant and sharp "

GAMESRADAR

http://www.gamesradar.com/x...

"Occasional pop-up".........ONLY IN X360 version of GTA4

http://xs226.xs.to/xs226/08...

So happy that i own a PS3

GAMESRADAR also confirms that PS3 version is SUPERIOR

"While the PS3 and 360 versions of the game are functionally identical, the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic. If you're looking to compare Accomplishments with your Achievement-hoarding friends, though, forget it - GTA IV ignores these half-assed consolation prizes altogether. PS3 owners also have to put up with a nearly eight-minute installation the first time they start the game, which puts the normally slower Blu-ray load times on par with the Xbox 360 version. (That is, unless it's running on a 360 with no hard drive, which we're told will face much longer loads.)"

I'll take 10 min Install which which helps with short loading times for the PS3 version other the short loading times on the 360.

power of Green 5860d ago

XBL down durring the holliday rush with 4 or 5 online AAA's is going to cause issues and when PS3 fanboys said XBL will have issues thats understandable due to 10 million people trying to play at once same with COD4 map paks but I also warned PS3 owners that PSN has nothing on the traffic of XBL and PSN hasn't even been stressed I was also right about PSN having issues when PS3 fanboys were saying XBL would crash because of GTA 4.

You'd rather have a free trash service over an easy to pay 50$ a year fee? That 50$ gets you top notch service, minimal down time and access to the greatest multiplayer games available on any console.

I don't think no amount of preparation could prepare RockStar for todays events. Especially since they have to depend on GameSpy for their server on PS3.

Thus far, I haven't had any problems with the Xbox 360 version. I got online last night for a round and have yet to see the pop-in talked about on the internet.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies20d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken20d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing6920d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker20d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing6920d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt20d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken20d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.
