2 games you shouldn't purchase for PS4 or Xbox One

A highly anticipated game, and many thinking whether it could be the next big game. Sadly the game is a complete disappointment, it really doesn't have any of the cool and unique features many thought it would. You could in some ways call it cinematic game as it has a feel of that type of game.

Ryse is actually a very good purchase and fun when you know what you're doing. And the graphics are superb

This should've been Lococycle that game is terrible. The graphics are bad for even Xbox 360 standards

For the PS4 after watching some videos I'd agree with Knack

BradR3809d ago

I respect your opinion mate, I agree its actually not a terrible game but what makes me not like it, is how repetitive it gets so quickly.

Hellsvacancy3809d ago

That's Crytek for you, pretty looking girl, lousy in bed

ExitToExisT3809d ago (Edited 3809d ago )

I haven't played Ryse but i believe people are judging it a bit too harsh.

I finished Batman:AO last week and if you are talking about repetitive action game, there you have it. Not to mention that everything is the same as Arkham City.

The only hack&slash i recently played which was not repetitive until very end was Devil may cry game developed by Ninja theory. They gave you new abilities and weapon every chapter and it kept the gameplay fresh.

MidnytRain3809d ago

Hellsvacancy

I always find that analogy humorous. If Crytek is a pretty girl, then most other devs are fugly and morbidly obese.

Hellsvacancy3809d ago (Edited 3809d ago )

^^^^

Nah, Naughty Dog look fabulous and are AMAZING in bed, Bethesda look rough and you get a std in the process, EA would the hookers of the industry

minimur123809d ago

Sometimes when I CBA to click on the article I just look at the tags. The 2 launch titles you should buy are Knack and Ruse. Lol

However I believe that a launch title you should definitely not buy is Angry Birds. Lol

guitarded773809d ago (Edited 3809d ago )

I'm gonna call BS on not playing EITHER game. I have Knack, and reviews be damned. It's fun. Not GOTY... FUN!!!

While I haven't played Ryse, it looks like a game that demands to be played by any early adopter. Visually it looks great, and while gameplay may get a little too quicktime occasionally, it doesn't mean it should be missed.

Early adopters are the people who take a risk, and many times the rewards are where you may not expect them. Maybe too many game sites over-hyped these games, but for someone excited about next-gen, I think they'll enjoy them.

You could just rent them, but if you like the developers, then buying is a good choice. I got Knack on the buy 2 get 1 free deal, so it came out to $40. I think it was worth $40.

nveenio3809d ago

Knack is my favorite PS4 game right now. It shines in 2-player co-op. My kids and I really like playing it together.

Fluke_Skywalker3808d ago

I haven't got a PS4 yet sadly so haven't played the full game, but I played the in store demo of Knack and instantly wonders what the hell is wrong with all the reviewers these days, I thought the demo was great!
I also have a 3 year old son who will love it so I'll definitely be getting it. I honestly think some reviewers have been a bit too harsh on all the launch games, clearly expecting too much me thinks.

MidnytRain3808d ago

Hellsvacancy

No game that ND has created looks anything close to Crysis 3. Trying to argue this is plain stupid. On the one hand you have the 11/10 who's a dud. On the other you have the comparitively 6 or 7/10 who's a demon in the sack. Take your pick.

UltimateMaster3808d ago

Knack's really fun. It's challenging.
But the story seems to be missing some elements.

badz1493808d ago

this is just another flamebait article.

DragonKnight3808d ago

@MidnytRain: BEHOLD, the PC gamer's most frequently used defense of a developer they love on PC but also makes console games, the "No game on consoles looks as good as *insert developers name and game here* does on PC."

Sorry MidnytRain, but Crytek hasn't made a console game that looks better than NaughtyDog's Uncharted games or The Last of Us and you know it. That's why you used Crysis 3 as an example because of how good it looks on PC, but you also know it looks like shite on consoles.

mikeslemonade3808d ago

HAHA.. Give me a bombshell looking woman and I don't care if she is good in bed or not. I'd take a 10 even if she would never give consent to do it.

I have a girlfriend though.

MidnytRain3808d ago (Edited 3808d ago )

DragonKnight

Pay attention:

- I brought up Crysis because the comment was about Crytek

- did not say I liked Crytek, or even Crysis

- How is a good-looking game looking like weaksauce on weaksauce hardware even a point?

DragonKnight3808d ago

@MidnytRain: So you brought up Crysis 3 because the comment was about Crytek, but you had to make it Crysis 3 on PC even though the comment was about consoles?

See, moving the goal post to make Crytek look good. Which, if your statement about not liking Crytek is even true, is hilarious.

MidnytRain3808d ago (Edited 3808d ago )

DragonKnight

Hellsvacancy's comment had nothing to do with consoles. Also, I didn't say I DIDN'T like Cryrek either. You're insane.

DragonKnight3808d ago

Hellsvacancy made a comment about a Crytek game for consoles, this entire thread has nothing to do with PCs. You just decided to bring up Crysis 3, and obviously for PC, because you were defending Crytek. Why is that so hard for you to admit? You made an irrelevant, PC related comment when the story and comment you replied to have nothing, contextually, to do with PCs.

You said "Didn't say I liked Crytek of Crisis" so logically one would infer your meant you didn't like them. If you want to split hairs because you don't feel like being clear, do that on your own time.

I guess the author of this article never played this game then.

http://www.ign.com/videos/2...

The worst reviewed game is years! Look at the Metacritic.

admiralvic3809d ago

1) Why is the title 2 games you should purchase, when it lists 2 games, both of which are exclusive? As a PS4 owner, I certainly agree I shouldn't purchase Ryse, since I can't play the thing. Same with Xbox owners buying Knack. -eye roll-
2) I don't see why Ryse gets called out, but fighter within, which is pulling a sub 3 score on metacritic is left out. Ryse at least looks nice.
3) Knack isn't that bad (contrast is certainly worse) and we all know that you can tell how good a game is by watching a gameplay video or two.

AlphaJunk3808d ago

It's actually a Fun and I'm enjoying it.

ewstokes3808d ago

Knack is one off my favorite games so far

Tapewurm3808d ago

Not sure on Ryse...just know what I have seen from vids and the horrible E3 showing.

As far as Knack is concerned... I almost didn't buy it, but Target had a buy 2 get 1 free deal so it was a freebie. The best way to sum Knack up is to look at it through the eyes of an 8 or 10 year old... My boy's ages... To me Knack looks like a graphically beefed up platformer...been there, done that kind of game.... To my kids however, and I quote my 8 year-old... "This is my most favorite game ever Dad!"

I think it is easy for us as seasoned gamers to be a little jaded towards games that are not "New" and "Groundbreaking" to us....(this is especially true for a majority of today's "Game Journalists")So games like Knack will get a "Meh!" response from us vets and at the same time "Wow" the new eyes of a younger gamer. My sons love the game and would probably give it 10's across the board....7 to 8 range for this guy....it has been fun for me watching them enjoy it.

Trekster_Gamer3808d ago

I'd bet most of the disagrees are trolls and those that think reviews are the final word.

I finished RYSE as well as my son and we have different tastes in gaming and I can honestly say this reviewer is way of the mark as we both loved it.

Great gameplay.. No more repetitive than any other game...

Story.. Deep rich and well told!

Voice acting.. Music as good if not better than any other launch game..

And of course it is a showcase testament to show what the XB1 can do.

Not a 5 0ut of 5 but easily a 4.

Worth the price!!

Ausbo3808d ago

i also enjoyed ryse. Yes its EXTREMELY linear and repetitive, but its fun and the amount of executions causes me to never get bored.

The multiplayer is suprisingly fun too.
I give it a 7.5 personally. All I ask is that people try it before bashing it.

scofios3808d ago

once againe the N1 Xbox tool to the rescue

quaneylfc3808d ago

i think ryse is great. i haven't really owned any games without guns in haha but it was the graphics that made me buy it. (that and lego marvel was delayed!)

its a good game, its repetitive yes, but I like the fighting, if or when i get bored i'll just trade it in.

i bought it to show off and was genuinely surprised, good graphics, animations and acting, good story and for me- good combat.

gamer78043808d ago

Ryse, while not without its faults is a fun, gorgeous looking action game, in a great setting.

UnHoly_One3808d ago

I can't comment on Knack, but as I have said before in other stories, I don't get all the hate on Ryse.

I think it's great. I played through the whole game, then started playing AC4 and actually got a little bored and went back to Ryse and started playing multiplayer, and started the campaign over on the hardest difficulty.

I absolutely love it. I've never been one to knock a game for being "repetitive", though, so keep that in mind. I don't get that argument, because almost all games are repetitive. You either like them or you don't, and I like the combat in Ryse.

GribbleGrunger3808d ago

What motivates people to write articles telling us NOT to buy something. I really can't understand this mentality. If you want Ryse or Knack, go out and buy them.

solidt123808d ago

I completely disagree. Knack is a very good purchase at launch. it is the only game at launch that is a new ip on the PS4.

elmaton983808d ago

Talk about repetitive. I've been playing super mario world on my pc and I'm still having fun as I did 18 years ago.

Belking3808d ago

Ryse wasn't bad at all to me. I loved it. A sequel would be awesome. I don't think knack is that bad either. I don't see how a article like this could get approved. Gamings site should never allow stuff like this to be published. Its very anti-gamer IMO.

lifeisgamesok3809d ago

Hack and slash games are meant to be simple

In Ryse I've counted 9 different strikes from heavy and light attacks then you have block, roll, focus power, pilas, 100+ executions

There's an upgrade system

The only thing that hurt this game is the lack of weapon choice

If there's a Ryse 2 they can correct it

KiRBY30003809d ago

blablabla... you love the xbox one, we get it.

bomboclaat_gamer3808d ago

so because he likes an xbox one game you have to address him like that?

this is why i always hate sony scumbags

elmaton983808d ago (Edited 3808d ago )

Well you could've address him as a fanboy instead of a scumbag don't you think bimbo.

ShinMaster3809d ago

Ryse must be the first hack and slash game you've played then.

BISHOP-BRASIL3808d ago

"Hack and slash games are meant to be simple"

Just like Ninja Gaiden, Metal Gear Rising, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta... No, wait. Do you even know what a hack and slash is? Some of the most crazy complex gameplays out there belong right in this genre and simply because this is just beat'em'up with weapons, so it relies heavily on combat, for which it needs a great variation of attacks, combos and enemies' habilities to be challenging.

Of course not every hack'n'slash series aim at that level os complexity in the combat alone, but usually they rely on other factors to keep the player interested, like having a good story (Heavenly Sword, Castlevania), creative worlds/visuals (Afro Samurai, Darksiders), interesting characters (GOW, Onimusha), crowd-combat (Dinasty Worriors, N3) etc...

Yet, even when they go for a simpler combat system, usually the combat is still challenging and varied enough on itself, it's a combat focused genre afterall... But Ryse is the first game of this genre I ever played that completelly missed this point.

Sure I had seen other games with just as basic combat before, but they are usually in other genres (Action RPGs, MMOs, Sandboxes, etc) that only happen to use H'n'S combat gameplay, they don't focus on it. Ryse can't really take that excuse as it lacks any other gameplay mechanics to even consider another genre... And even some action RPGs like Dragon's Dogma and Dark Souls could beat the crap out of it on the hack and slash gameplay alone just thanks to the variety in enemies... This game looks like someone took Assassin's Creed combat with just the sword and put it on a linear game, added some GOW-esque QTEs to make executions (albeit those are really well varied) and some lame attempt at commanding the troops moments.

I had only played 2 hours of Ryse (it was the most I could take before demanding my friend to pop in some Forza or I would leave, LOL) so I can be under a bad impression not representing the whole game... Still, what I saw was the gameplay is lacking, the story seens a bit generic, the world/univer setted (albeit beatiful) is too much down to earth (I don't even know why they clain it to be setted in an alternate history, it's almost History Channel material, highly innacurate but will bore you just like the real thing) and I didn't get to explore or know anymore from it ("it's rome, you're a general, go kill some sh*t"), the characters were lacking as far as I played (which is a shame, the voice work is solid) and the last and worst part is how painfull it is to progress in this game as there's zero exploration beyond the eventual collectible on the restricted linear path (this is the worst part really, it's basically the usual FPS single player pace: custscene > kill stuff > cutscene > kill stuff > find item > cutscene > kill stuff > use item > cutscene > kill stuff...).

It's not broken, it may not even be a bad game for the right person (specially considering I had not tried the multiplayer), but this game is just freaking boring as a H'n'S. Please don't drag the whole genre down to its level.

elmaton983808d ago

Man don't compare ryse to ninja gaiden. Ninja gaiden is a hell of a beautiful game and fun to play( but not ng3, the game suck).

BISHOP-BRASIL3808d ago

Well, I'm not really comparing it to Ryse, am I? As I said the most comparable game to is is a mix of Assassin's Creed combat and God Of War QTEs. In fact I pointed just how games like Ninja Gaiden and other H'n'S are really complex, there nothing pointing at H'n'S games trying to be simple as lifeisgamesok claimed.

Anyway, I completelly agree with you. I first played Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox, fell in love with the series, kept playing Sigma versions on PS3 and they were great, but Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and its purple mist was the start of dumbing down (don't get me wrong, it was still good game, but that was completelly unecessary) while Ninja Gaiden 3 simply became crap all around.

But just to make it clear, I was taking about those H'n'S games as franchises and how they differ from Ryse, not any specific title, maybe except for Castlevania, which I meant the latest 3D titles, other ealier and portable games in the franchise are obviously more platformer or RPG like than H'n'S like.

from the beach3809d ago

Definitely get Ryse if you're buying Xbox One, beautiful, spectacular and 'entertaining' throughout!

CPTN MITCHELL3808d ago

Ryse is boring the sound is generic they all look the same and when running by water it sound as if is running on dry ground plus after killing 100's of enemy your player don't have a single drop of blood generic, boring, repetitive

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney3808d ago

u dont have an xbox though.. lol

kratoz12093809d ago

Knack is awesome :D and i enjoy playing it with my Nephews

cr33ping_death3809d ago

Its not the greatest game....but it is fun if youre playing it with a casual gamer, like i am with my gf.... I play BF4 when shes at work and pop in Knack to play with her, she plays as Knack and i help her out.... So long as she liked it im happy.... Plus it was part of the buy 2 get one free so i cant complain :)

Dark113809d ago

I knew Knack was going to be shit since the ps4 reveal.

It was a great game, it had issues but it can only go up from here.

crazyCoconuts632d ago

It was just ok. Looked really good for an Xbox game though

Snookies12631d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows90631d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac631d ago (Edited 631d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty631d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts631d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage89631d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.
I remember it being nearly the only graphically decent game on the Xbone for like the first two years after launch, and graphics were that games strength

ManMarmalade631d ago (Edited 631d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer632d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer7804632d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty1889631d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer631d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv72632d ago (Edited 632d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad631d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv72631d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play632d ago

Game was good enough, not great.
Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows90631d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.

This is not what I would call value for money spent. They give you quests in liveservice games to get you "re-engaged" with the monetization schemes or to get you hooked or so you at least spend some extra on skins and loot boxes. Then they dole out paltry points after you have already paid extra for whichever liveservice within a liveservice that you are already paying for. My worry is people can't actually be that stupid to fall for this, can they?

littletad637d ago

Absolutely nothing in this comment makes sense. At all.

anast637d ago (Edited 637d ago )

How does it not make sense? O thy god of reason, shine some evidence upon us. Ryse of Rome, ESO,and AC: Origins are all live service games, between them you can get 275 points. Liveservice games are made to keep people spending. Therefore, Gamepass is a live service and the points are for playing live service games.

It is not my problem that this does not make sense to you, it is absolutely your problem. I mean it is all your problem.

Julion0715637d ago (Edited 637d ago )

Hate Xbox but comments in every Xbox article 😂 without making sense smh
