Review: Ryse: Son of Rome – For the glory of Microsoft! | Clearance Bin Review

The story for Ryse is somewhat cliché in nature but like most any fiction based on Ancient Rome, a total guilty pleasure. The story does manage to go in a couple of more interesting directions and a subplot forms throughout the adventure that highlights the potential for Ryse to become a franchise of note. The actors generally do a fantastic job, even when the dialogue is full of cheese and the character animations are superb which helps to greatly sell the story, which is very epic in nature.

I fnished the campaign, and I must say that I enjoyed it a lot. While the combat is a bit repetitive, I played on the hardest available difficulty so it was fun to master and i never found myself not entertained. I really thought it was great, despite being a tad short (quality over quantity though!), and I highly recommend it. Awesome game. In my opinion I do not think it deserved the really low scores some reviewers gave it.

Pope_Kaz_Hirai_II3830d ago

Wow this review is pretty high like a 10 for a normal game.

Testfire3830d ago

What killed the game for me were the character models. Crytek should have made more instead if the same ones over and over. You'll have multiple characters on screen at times that are identical dress, size and face. For me that really ground my gears.

GusBricker3830d ago (Edited 3830d ago )

Did you enjoy how Kinect is used? I mean, calling out for archers instead of holding the button for like 3-5 seconds works so damn well.

Happy Kinect voice commands work so well for Ryse and Dead Rising.

Dragonborn3123830d ago

I actually really enjoyed using my own voice for commanding the troops, made me feel badass haha. I would love for games like Mass Effect to utilize voice commands for conversations, that would be a cool option.

Bigpappy3830d ago

I don't have my X1 yet, but totally looking forward to playing this game. I want to unlock every finisher though.

kewlkat0073830d ago

I have not purchased it yet Dead Rising 3 and Killer Instinct been keeping me entertained..

KI is a must have if your into fighting Games...that Netcode is a beast..

Dragonborn3123830d ago (Edited 3830d ago )

Dead Rising 3 is so much fun. Have been playing it all day. So many over the top weapons! "Massager" + Leaf Blower = Awesome! haha. Still have not tried Killer Instinct, but since it is in a way free to play I will check it out, I am not that into fighting games though.

I love this game. And it was actually longer than I expected because I kept hearing it was very short

Graphically this game is perfect and I like the upgrading system

It's a bad game if you don't know what you're doing because enemies will frustrate you and give you a bad experience

I found the gameplay to be great. And the 1st time I kicked an enemy back while using focus power... Holy :)

Dragonborn3123830d ago

Haha yeah kicking with focus sends them flying back so far!

lifeisgamesok3830d ago

Yeah it really does and the fast combos while using focus is a nice touch

This game should actually be at least a 8 or higher and I've been gaming for 20+ years

Volkama3830d ago

Agree. Microsoft should put up a demo ASAP to counter the awful reviews, maybe just the opening of the game before you start telling your story.

I'm certain a lot of people would enjoy the game.

Einhert3830d ago

"ROME IS CIVALISATION! ROME IS ORDER! ROME IS POWER!"

Loved that quote from the story trailer, out of all the launch games and despite the reviews I kind of want to play this game the most simply for the setting.

ATiElite3830d ago

Ryse Son of Rome is a great game!

Fun, entertaining, and great graphics. I had a BLAST playing thru it in one night and I loved it. The combat was challenging as you needed to upgrade abilities and learn how to execute combos to be an efficient fighter.

I still say the A.I. could've been smarter but still a great game.

Looking forward to Ryse DLC. If you own a XB1 then you MUST buy Ryse!

Good job Crytek

jjb19813830d ago

I'm enjoying it right now and I think its awesome. I came into it expecting it to be what it is and came away happy. I own both systems and I think each system will continue to deliver their own great games. I bought xbox one for its exclusives and Ryse is a great addition to the collection.

Ryse was awesome, i have no idea why it wasnt recieved well and why we havnt seen another, Rome conquered so much, you could take the action anywhere, and it looked great when xbox one came out, now would be even better.

Ryse: Son of Rome Deserves a Second Shot

Ryse: Son of Rome was an Xbox One launch title that has been left to collect dust, but Crytek should set aside Crysis and give Ryse another shot.

It was a great game, it had issues but it can only go up from here.

crazyCoconuts648d ago

It was just ok. Looked really good for an Xbox game though

Snookies12648d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows90648d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty648d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts648d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage89647d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.
I remember it being nearly the only graphically decent game on the Xbone for like the first two years after launch, and graphics were that games strength

CrimsonWing69648d ago

I really enjoyed it. Bought it at launch even.

ManMarmalade648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer648d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer7804648d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty1889648d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer648d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv72648d ago (Edited 648d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad648d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv72648d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play648d ago

Game was good enough, not great.
Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows90648d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.

MadLad648d ago

It was a good game.
Only time I saw quick time events actually make me feel engaged.

This is not what I would call value for money spent. They give you quests in liveservice games to get you "re-engaged" with the monetization schemes or to get you hooked or so you at least spend some extra on skins and loot boxes. Then they dole out paltry points after you have already paid extra for whichever liveservice within a liveservice that you are already paying for. My worry is people can't actually be that stupid to fall for this, can they?

littletad654d ago

Absolutely nothing in this comment makes sense. At all.

anast653d ago (Edited 653d ago )

How does it not make sense? O thy god of reason, shine some evidence upon us. Ryse of Rome, ESO,and AC: Origins are all live service games, between them you can get 275 points. Liveservice games are made to keep people spending. Therefore, Gamepass is a live service and the points are for playing live service games.

It is not my problem that this does not make sense to you, it is absolutely your problem. I mean it is all your problem.

Julion0715653d ago (Edited 653d ago )

Hate Xbox but comments in every Xbox article 😂 without making sense smh

anast653d ago

Bring the evidence and then your emoji might make sense.
