METRO-Ryse: Son Of Rome review – are you not entertained?

A shallow and unambitious tech demo, of the sort that console launches specialise in. The action works perfectly well but it’s instantly repetitive to the point of inanity.

GarrusVakarian3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

Wow...........

"A shallow and unambitious tech demo"

starchild3833d ago

Admit it, that makes you happy.

obliteratorFTW3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

Yes I admit, it makes me really happy. After all the bashing knack got, after all the trolling done in kz articles, this serves xbox fan right.

Where were you when they were trolling knack and kz articles?

GarrusVakarian3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

It makes me happy that im buying it next year when it will probably half price or less. I always wanted to play this game and always praised it when i watched dev diaries and gameplay vids....but i knew right from the start it was nothing more than a good looking hack and slash.

I mean,its Crytek after all.....

I don't know what you think of me, but the fact its getting low scores doesn't make me happy like im some rabid fanboy poking fun. It just makes me happy because i was right in getting it next year and not for full retail price. As a matter of fact, it was only yesterday i was saying im getting an X1 FOR this game....and Titanfall, which is still true.

But i admit, the fact that the Xbox fans who bashed KZ and Knack last week are nowhere to be seen puts a little smirk on my face.

GTgamer3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

After looking at the knack and KZ comment section when it got Bad reviews yes this makes me smile because the xbox fans deserve it right now gotta love Karma.

I'm happy this guys are getting that sweet crow served.

sincitysir13833d ago

Woooo woo hoo hahahahajahajahahahajajaja!!!! Jeez I can't - BAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHAHA!!!!!! Sweet satisfaction!'n

On a serious note I loved knack even with all the low scores. I'm sure people will still love this 3/10 - BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Jury3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

Money not well spent... Bad luck ms.

NewMonday3833d ago

I'm happy this will make trolls think twice before bashing a game that doesn't get 9's and 10's, especially after XB1 fans where over hyping the launch lineup, they end up with nothing to brag about.

MasterCornholio3833d ago

It does because I hate it when terrible games get great scores. Like COD Ghosts for example.

Nexus 7 2013

boneso823833d ago

It makes me happy that I haven't wasted £50 on a terrible game. We all know now why it was embargoed for so long. Typical Crytek game, all show and no fun!

This journalist is fast becoming respected for refusing to dance to the PR jig.

He asks questions that gamers want answered and he reviews bad games honestly without fear of being blackballed. Yet he still gives enough information so people interested in the game can make up their own minds. A review is tightrope of subjective opinion and factual detail and David Jenkins seems to be getting the balance right.

LeShin3833d ago

*Looks at review David Jenkins gave for COD: Ghosts*

Nope, sorry can't agree with that. COD is tired, doesn't innovate at all and just comes out annually with minor tweaks like a sports franchise. At least Black Ops 2 TRIED to change it up a bit, but he gave Ghosts an 8...*Shakes head*

Gazondaily3833d ago

Playing Devil's Advocate here but isn't anything below a 4 (quoting Snookies here) indicative of a broken game?

I think, like the Forbes review of Knack, that this is a bit too harsh.

dcj05243833d ago

Yeah. Ryse; like knack are basic entries in their genres. Its a solid 6.5-7.

DARK WITNESS3833d ago

not really... i think the big problem is simply that we have got so use to seeing 8 and above for what are sometimes very average games, it has messed up how games are scored in general.

if 10 was the very top of the scale the really a 5 should be slap bang in the middle average.

something that is a 3 to 4 mark should be poor. a game that is really broken and unplayable should be a 1 or 2.

5 should be average like I said, while 6 should be good/ok. 7 to 8 should be very good / Great game.

9 should be a totally awesome, must buy game and finally 10/10 should be perfect/the very best of what that game could be.

like I said though, I think scores are messed up because all of the last gen we have had games that in all honesty were average/good ish scoring stuff like 8 to 9's which has then lead to the impression that a score like a 7 is poor.

anyway, thats my take on it.

Rise is not literally broken/unplayable but it sounds like it is a below average game so a 5 to 4 ish score sounds right to me.

LeShin3833d ago

BUBS to Dark Witness! Agree totally! Scores should just be abolished for this generation as it's so messed up.

C-H-E-F3833d ago

Eww, they didn't see that one coming. I guess they should've kept it a Kinect 2 game afterall. Welp enjoying my PowerStation. :D PM me your PSN i'll add you.

@Starchild it makes me feel better about Knack, but honestly Knack is about a 7.5-8 idk why it's all that bad on metacritic because the game is your average platformer and pretty fun.

TheLyonKing3833d ago

I think they maybe overly harsh with this score, its not a stellar games it seems (judging by the reviews) but it is in no way worse than duke nukem

GarrusVakarian3833d ago

At least Duke Nukem was funny.

I actually enjoyed that game *hides*

MRMagoo1233833d ago

come on Ryse is funny too have you not seen the famous roman gladiator move called the slidey retreart? heres a gif of it, http://tinypic.com/view.php...

C-H-E-F3833d ago

@MRM the only thing funny about Ryse is the fact that Microsoft thought it was good enough to be a system seller. SMH

georgenancy3833d ago

man this game is getting destroyed plain and simple

Naughty__Boy3833d ago (Edited 3833d ago )

WOW a 3 this is so much fun. Lol....

M-M3833d ago

I knew that Ryse was going to take some hits when it came to reviews, but a 3/10? NOT what I expected lol.

Shadow of Rome was so freaking good

Sashamaz394d ago

I'm still waiting for the sequel.

HyperMoused394d ago

Ryse was awesome, i have no idea why it wasnt recieved well and why we havnt seen another, Rome conquered so much, you could take the action anywhere, and it looked great when xbox one came out, now would be even better.

Ryse: Son of Rome Deserves a Second Shot

Ryse: Son of Rome was an Xbox One launch title that has been left to collect dust, but Crytek should set aside Crysis and give Ryse another shot.

It was a great game, it had issues but it can only go up from here.

crazyCoconuts649d ago

It was just ok. Looked really good for an Xbox game though

Snookies12649d ago

"for an Xbox game"

Way to subtly throw shade there. It looked amazing compared to any game at the time it was released.

Never played it myself though, wasn't really interested in it personally. Plus it came at a time when I didn't own an Xbox console. But it was at least different than the usual copy/paste games we get. So I hope it gets another chance sometime soon.

Crows90649d ago

It was a crytek game though

1nsomniac649d ago (Edited 649d ago )

It was a stunning game on all basis. One of the standout games for Xbox as a whole. I ended up buying on pc as well… and yes nothing looked better than it in PC at the time either. Nothing just ok about it, definitely needs a sequel.

fr0sty649d ago

@snookies12, don't pretend like the Xbox One didn't struggle with being gimpled by its tiny pool of ESRAM as a frame buffer. It was significantly weaker than the PS4.

crazyCoconuts649d ago

Metacritic 60, user score 6.4. I'm not alone in putting it into the "ok" category...

VenomCarnage89648d ago

@snookies
Haven't played it but at least you know enough to defend Xbox over it. The game did look good, for an Xbox game. That's not some "subtle shade," it's full on reality.
I remember it being nearly the only graphically decent game on the Xbone for like the first two years after launch, and graphics were that games strength

CrimsonWing69649d ago

I really enjoyed it. Bought it at launch even.

ManMarmalade649d ago (Edited 649d ago )

The qte's were disappointing though. God of war was doing it back in the ps2 days. As gorgeous as the game was, the gameplay needed to be updated.

annoyedgamer649d ago

I really liked the original Ryse but Crytek doesn't have the funds. The mismanaged their properties and let EA raid them with Crysis for the duration of their relationship. Right now they are working on Crysis 4, I doubt they can spare resources to work on a Ryse sequel.

gamer7804649d ago

It would have to be funded by MS, I really liked Ryse sure it got repetitive but the setting visuals and story were good

moriarty1889649d ago

MS should have funded a sequel to Ryse and Sunset OD. Two good franchises they definitely needed last gen.

annoyedgamer649d ago

MS is too busy trying to become the next EA, Ryse wont be on their list of titles to finance unless it gets a hipster makeover with lootboxes.

darthv72649d ago (Edited 649d ago )

I recently bought it for the steamdeck and have to say... 60fps is a game changer. I really wished MS had gotten a one x patch or series boost mode option but sadly, nope. Other games that definitely deserve a second chance (esp on steamdeck/pc) are quantum break and sunset overdrive. Both deserved 60fps support on one x / series but you have to go to PC for that.

Rumor has it Crytek had plans for a Ryse 2 but due to the low turnout for XB (at the time) it was shelved. They really should give this another shot. i dont care if its multiplat on PS and XB and PC and Switch... just so long as part 2 gets made.

babadivad649d ago

The game is automatically boosted on Series X

darthv72649d ago

sorry... but it's not. It still runs at the same fps the XBO did.

lelo2play649d ago

Game was good enough, not great.
Graphically it was top notch. Still holds well till this day.

Crows90649d ago

It only needed more enemy variety and few more movesets or weapons to use. That would have made the experience tons better.

MadLad649d ago

It was a good game.
Only time I saw quick time events actually make me feel engaged.

This is not what I would call value for money spent. They give you quests in liveservice games to get you "re-engaged" with the monetization schemes or to get you hooked or so you at least spend some extra on skins and loot boxes. Then they dole out paltry points after you have already paid extra for whichever liveservice within a liveservice that you are already paying for. My worry is people can't actually be that stupid to fall for this, can they?

littletad655d ago

Absolutely nothing in this comment makes sense. At all.

anast654d ago (Edited 654d ago )

How does it not make sense? O thy god of reason, shine some evidence upon us. Ryse of Rome, ESO,and AC: Origins are all live service games, between them you can get 275 points. Liveservice games are made to keep people spending. Therefore, Gamepass is a live service and the points are for playing live service games.

It is not my problem that this does not make sense to you, it is absolutely your problem. I mean it is all your problem.

Julion0715654d ago (Edited 654d ago )

Hate Xbox but comments in every Xbox article 😂 without making sense smh

anast654d ago

Bring the evidence and then your emoji might make sense.
